I know that after shipping from Ohio, it wasn't the screaming deal it was before the shipping, but my concerns after waiting on a list with another dealer for four months was just getting the van at all, within a reasonable time. For me personally, driving the thing from Ohio to California wasn't an option, especially with the winter weather and snow. Heck, I saved myself $900 (the shipping costs) in aggravation in dealing with all the bait and switchers here in California who tell you anything to get you to commit to buying from them but never delivering. I also got a great deal on the Hondacare warranty, so even after the shipping, I still think I got it from Ohio for less than what I would have paid locally, plus I got it with a minimal wait. The Honda van comes from the factory in exactly the same configuration for all dealerships in the country. Its no different than any other Honda Oddy shipped to any dealer in the US. REgistration in California took about 20 minutes. YOu can make an online reservation at your local dmv. I didn't pay any Ohio tax, and only a temporary license fee. Tax and license on the EX Navi here in california was around $2400.00. It took four days to get the van from the shippers depot in New Jersey to my driveway after they (dependable auto shippers) actually started the shipment. It worked out great for me. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

I called my Geico agent to add the new EX on my insurance and she asked me if I wanted to have an extended warranty of 7 yr/100k for about 26.00/6months. She said it offers comprehensive coverage (includes drivertrain, power doors/windows, electrical, a/c, etc.). I was wondering if anyone had comments about that.
I myself am debating the value of the ext warranty since I can probably set aside $1000 for any repairs later. However, a van as expensive as this one makes me think!

    Sbpceap:
    I was charged as follows:
    26,840 + 198 Doc fee + NYS registration + tax.
I guess they did get me with a doc fee.

The dealer I have been dealing with got their allocation of vans a week ago. I put a $500 deposit the moment the allocation list came out for a Dark Emerald/EX. When I asked for the IN number I was told this was not available, I was told it would take two weeks to have a IN number and expect delivery around the first week in March. Can anyone give me some advice what is a reasonable time for the dealer to receive the van.

    thank you

Two weeks ago we ordered the EX for MSRP (26,400) plus 400 destination charge with no extras, in the color of our choice, from Heritage Honda of Towson. Expect arrival in two weeks (one month wait total).

We called every dealer near Baltimore and waiting times ranged from 2 to 5 months for an EX at other dealers. One dealer wanted MSRP + 1,000 for a one month delivery time.

We did test drive one and we could have bought a couple others that were not picked up as expected, but they were loaded with a couple thousand dollars worth of unwanted accessories with seemingly inflated installation charges like $400 roof rack cross bars, etc., and not in our color choice. We may order and have installed a few of the accessories, but will do so only after the purchase from a contact at a dealership that is willing to order and install them at a discount. Of course extras not purchased from the beginning are not covered by the warranty, but you don't need a warranty for a metal roof rack cross bar or other small accessory anyway.

The test drive of an EX went well except for the power doors. They are slow and prone to malfunctioning; this along with the fear of the power doors breaking was almost enough to push us to the LX, but the combination of the roof rack, alloy wheels, keyless entry, security system, and CD player were enough to tolerate and take a risk on the power doors.

Obtained the loan application from www.e-loan.com about a month ago and the rate was 7.02%. Have not filled out the forms yet.

Allocations work like this: Every month Honda schedules each dealer for production slots. The actual production time is for 4-6 weeks away. Delivery time to the dealership (here in Maryland) is 10-21 days.

We receive this list of Odys by model and color. At that point there is no VIN. Only after about a month will we start getting info on the production date. After the car has been manufactured will there be a VIN. The actual start to finish time from allocation to delivery should only take 8 weeks.

    Hope this helps.

I just drove 350 miles to pick up my SS Ex with Nav from Vandergriff Honda in Arlington (between Fort Worth and Dallas). Paid 500 off MSRP, no glass etching, no poly raz-ma -taz, no required add ons. I added leather for 1300 and extra tint on front windows for 100. Salesman was Ken See. Very good experience. Jbs

I'm new to the board. I notice some refer to their Oddys as AS ES and SS EX. What do the "AS" and the "SS" stand for?
    Thanks
  • johng14johng14 Member Posts: 31
So the first week of March is not a realistic date? If this is the case then I'm calling the dealer and removing my deposit. I was hoping that once the allocations were given then it was a matter of the factory delivering the van. I was not aware the van still had to go into production.

This waiting is a joke. Honda is holding its customers hostage. I may just go and look into a Sienna, at least they have vans for immediate delivery.

    thanks for the info
  • jbsherrodjbsherrod Member Posts: 3
    SS stands for Satin Silver.
I don't know what AS means either
  • odd1odd1 Member Posts: 227
AS is a typo for SS starlight silver.

I just put a deposit on a Mesa Beige EX (non Navi) for April delivery. Added a cassette player and cargo tray. Thinking about mud guards. Are they useful? Anything else I will regret not getting?
    Appreciate any advice.

Odd 1 is right, the spell check changed my SS to AS (and it is Starlight Silver). I think mud flaps are worth a few extra bucks to keep those fenders clean, reducing the frequency and need for washing. You can save $20 if you buy them after-market (online or otherwise) and install them yourself. That said, I think your MB and my SS are good colors for not showing light colored road grime as quickly.

I followed Joe's lead and got the warranty from Jeff Klotz at First Texas Honda for $925. Piece of cake! I had wanted to buy it from Dennis at Jay Honda since he was so straight up during my EX-Nav negotiations, but his finance mgr wouldn't go below $1050. If you have a new Ody and want the warranty, with ease, call Jeff at 512-458-2511. I live in California, got the car from Ohio and the warranty from Texas, and saved $$$. Isn't the internet great?

gjk_stl (message # 848): You mentioned $100 coupon for purchasing before March 5th. Where can I get it in St. Louis? I am expecting my odyssey by end of Feb.
  • temp_atltemp_atl Member Posts: 5
Got my Ex yesterday from Alton Blakely Honda, Somerset, KY. Had to wait for 2-3 weeks. Everybody at Alton Blakely Honda was really nice, and very straight forward. Dealt with Shawn Franklin (sales man). The trip back to Atlanta was rainy and so a little long but was happy to get it done the right way. Got 7yr/100k/0 Deductible Honda Care from them for $875. So, that's good too. Paid $26340 + 299 (Cassette player) + 100 (wheel locks and cargo tray). They put mud guards for free. No destination charge or doc fee.
  • acsmithacsmith Member Posts: 63
I really don't believe Honda is holding its customers hostage. The Ody is VERY profitable for them, and they would love to make more but the factory is in full production at about 9500 units per month. The new factory opens in TN? AL? in Feb 2002, as I recall. That will increase production. Why would a rational seller hold its customers hostage when it can sell every unit it can make. Remember that the dealers all pay the same factory price.

The problem is simply a matter of supply and demand. The utility regulators in California apparently ignored the law of supply and demand
    :-).

So, your friendly dealer gets an allocation of, say, 10 units for, say, April. He then takes orders, and when the allocation is sold out, guess what? The next customer through the door gets May delivery.

I know it's frustrating, but you can troll this thread and find dealers (usually NOT in major metro areas) who may have units available in the next month or so that have not yet been spoken for. You may have to be flexible on color. Just take that into account.

I'm in the Wash, DC area, and went about 75 miles south to Fredericksburg, VA to Pohanka Honda. Got a commitment for the dark green Emerald ODY EX for January delivery. On Jan 5 they told me that the factory production notice had arrived, and it was being manufactured between the 5th and the 15th. On the 16th or so, they called with the VIN (the number is assigned while the iron is on the line). The unit arrived on January 29, and the dealer kissed my ring to get it off the lot (read "paid for!") by Jan 31. Seems that future allocations depend on sales and getting my ODY delivered can keep the dealer at the high end of the numbers game.

Conclusion: 2 months is about average, but try non-Metro area delaers. All the ones in the DC area laughed, said $1000 over MSRP, or 4 - 6 month wait. Why sell to me at MSRP when they can get an extra grand from the next guy who wants it NOW?

I have an MB Oddy EX ordered. My wife is concerned about the power doors going out (dead battery,
etc.) and not being able to get in and out easily if this happens. Somebody please explain how Honda
    deals with such a situation.
    Thanks.

I understand that Honda is offering dealer holdbacks on the Odyssey now. Has anyone successfully used this information in their price negotiations? It is 2% of base MSRP.

I live in SoCal and have been on the list at Hoehn Honda in Carlsbad for about 3 months now awaiting my MB EX-Navi. I don't want to pay MSRP - but that is what Hoehn has promised. I was thinking of using this holdback info in my negotiations & was wondering if anyone else has done it successfully.

    Hi,

I too live in No.VA. could you give me the name of the sales man and how much LESS than MSRP did you pay?

Also, please tell me how much you paid for the 'shipping' or was it just the destination charge you paid?

    thanks!

temp_atl congratulations on getting your Odyssey.

Glad you thought the drive from Atlanta to Kentucky was worth it. I agree the folks at Alton Blakley were great to deal with.

After I saw the posts about Jay Honda of Ohio
    and contact the salesperson.
It seems the price went up by $300 after few
people posted here about their deal with Jay
Honda at Ohio. According to salesperson it's
supply and demand.. Sounds just like my local dealer.
Some one got the EX non-nav for $600 off before
but now it's only $300 off MSRP. After shipping
fee to No. Cal there is not much difference
    in price.
I'm not too comfortable about buying something
without seeing it first. I was considering it
if the price difference was big enought but..
Oh well... back to the waiting list.

Look for dealers on honda web site in the midwest where the layoffs by auto companies and their suppliers happened. Try some other dealer in Ohio, or Michigan, or Kentucky...

I got $600 under from Jay Honda. Still waiting for the van to arrive from Ohio->New Jersey->N. Cal. The shipping company said it should come 2/26. Too bad don't have it for the long weekend.

    Good luck for everyone!

I received the following e-mail today. Looks like this dealer has some Odyssey's coming in.
I bought my van from a different dealer (Alton Blakley) but thought I would post for information purposes. I don't have any information on how this dealer prices their Odysseys.

    Greetings!

Though it might not feel like it, it's getting closer to summer. I can tell
because it's getting more common to hear, "We need a van by [insert planned
vacation date here]." With the "vacation shoppers" gobbling up the Odyssey
vans again, we still don't have a huge supply available--but you'll notice
we've got a few we could get to you within two weeks!

Here's the list of production dates for 2001 Odyssey Mini-Vans that Don
Jacobs Honda in Lexington has coming:

    LX Starlight Silver -- March

EX Mesa Beige Metallic -- within two weeks
EX Mesa Beige Metallic -- within two weeks
EX Mesa Beige Metallic -- March
EX Granite Green Metallic -- March
EX Granite Green Metallic -- March
EX Dark Emerald Green -- within two weeks
EX Dark Emerald Green -- within two weeks
EX Dark Emerald Green -- March
    EX Starlight Silver -- March
    EX Taffeta White -- March

EX Navigator Edition Mesa Beige Metallic -- 2/19

From the listed build date, it takes about 14 to 17 days for the vehicle to
get here from Canada. As always, we can take a partial payment on any of
these (or for a color or trim level we don't have a build date for yet).

Call me at 1-800-726-5458 or 859-276-5555 if you have any questions.

    Helping meet your automotive needs,
    Tony Brusate.

If you have received this mail in error or would like to be removed from the
Don Jacobs Odyssey Availability List, please reply to spackl@mindspring.com

Picked up my new Ody from Ganley Honda in North Olmsted, OH (Cleveland suburb. I flew in this morning to Cleveland Hopkins Airport and drove the Ody back to NJ. Took 9 hours to get home (7 1/2 hours actual driving time). But it was well worth it. Get to experience Ody's superb handling on wet pavement (it was raining the whole time I was driving across PA. I initially dealt with Dave Pries on 1/25. However, Dave moved on to better things and Shawn Kipp took over and finished the whole thing. I went with Ganley Honda because I don't want to be on a 3 to 5 month waiting list here in NJ with no definitive delivery date. (Already went through a similar scenario 10 years ago for my 91 Toy Previa, not gonna happen to me again.) Needless to say, I got the Ody at less than MSRP which more than cover my airfare. Shawn also put in the mud guards for free. No hard sell. You select the options you want to add if you like their prices. My total cost out the door is $28,270, which includes Classic Soft leather upholstery, Honda OEM wood trims, $50 doc fee and $20 title & filing fee. I will pay the sales tax in NJ.

You can check out Shawn at www.i.am/the hondaguy or at www.ganleyhonda.com

Isn't the internet a wonderful thing? I went to Honda's website yesterday to search for dealers and this evening a new white EX arrived in my driveway. My purchase cost $26,340 and the dealer (Sam Swope Honda World from Lousiville, KY) was able to get me a great loan deal as well (less than 7.5% for 60 months). The cost for the 7 year/100,000 mile $0 deductible warranty is $770. My salesperson, Ben Matlin, was wonderful to work with. I couldn't believe that he drove 45 miles to bring the van right to me!

They have a number of these in stock and get 40 or so every month.

If you are in Southern Indiana, Southwestern Ohio, or anywhere in Kentucky, this is the place and Ben is the man. Be sure to tell him I said "Hello!"

Tim, was the $770 for the comprehensive component coverage, or for the other plans - powertrain coverage, etc????

We ordered our Ex Oddy in April of 1999. Unlike a lot of dealers that I've heard about, (for instance, the dealer that sold Edmunds their van), our dealer was very fair and very helpful. They didn't charge us extra over the MSRP, and they didn't load up our van with excessories that we didn't want. They were very helpful with any questions taht we had, and did their best to make our purchace eperiance a good one. Even after the sale they have continued to be very helpful, and courtious. They told us it would take 4 - 6 month to get our van after ordering it, and it came in in August of 1999. They did a good job of installing all of the extras that we ordered, and when the bug deflector was broken the very first night we had it, they even replaced it for free!! If you are interested in contacting this dealer, it is Harrisonburg Honda, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. (Sorry, I don't have the number on hand, just call 411.)

BOUGHT THE VAN AT MSRP BUT THEY DROVE IT TO ME FOR NO CHARGE TO FAIRFAX VA. OTHER DEALERS WANTED TO CHARGE ME $200-400 DOLLARS TO BRING IT TO ME. I FEEL I GOT A DISCOUNT BECAUSE I DIDNT HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THE VAN DELIVERED.HAD NO PROBLEMS .I HAD 400 MILES WHEN IT GOT HERE. TO ME IT WAS EASY AND I GOT WHAT I WANTED IN JUST 2 DAYS AFTER I PAID FOR IT

I searched the Los Angles area for dealers willing to sell an Odyssey EX at MSRP. Most dealers wanted MSRP plus $1000 or more. In addition they were adding dealer options. After seeing a posted message indicating that MSRP purchases could be made in the central valley, I searched for Honda dealers in Bakersfield and found Ralph Tinoco (internet sales, 661 396-4206) of Barber Honda. I placed an order for an EG Odyssey EX last Thursday and took delivery on Friday. I paid MSRP plus tax and license. I enjoyed a scenic drive from LA to Bakersfield and had a most delightful buying experience. I highly commend Barber Honda for their reasonable pricing policy and I would like to thank Ralph for his courteous attention and helpfulness. I envy the residents of Bakersfield for having a dealership like Barber Honda close at hand.

Any good/bad experiences with the Honda dealerships in the Raleigh/Durham area.
Autopark Honda quoted me $620 above MSRP for LX which is the lowest I was able to find.
Anybody had better luck. I don't mind driving
upto 5 hrs to pickup my van.

    thanks

ahmed: if you review some of the past posts here, your willingness to drive further to locate a good deal should get you msrp or under. Seems that, with the exceptions of some hold out areas where dealers are particularly greedy, the days of charging customers over list price are numbered with regard to Odysseys. Production due to increase later this year, reliability ratings have been slipping, and a weak economy are beginning to tilt the scales in buyer's favor. Do your homework, and good luck!

I live in Potomac, MD and I've spoken to a couple local DC-area dealers. Hersons Honda in Rockville is the only one who will accept MSRP, but it sounds to me like they want to make it up with steep fees on the extras:

    - $3,179 for leather seats
    - $198 for roof rack cross bars (I can't believe you actually have to pay extra for this)
    - $399 for a "protection package" (mud guards, trunk liner, wheel locks)

Are these typical rates that others are seeing? I'd like to have the leather, but $3K sounds awfully steep! I guess I'll have to try some out of town dealers.
  • dj5dj5 Member Posts: 42
All leather on the Odyessys is outsourced. Classic Trim Soft offers some of the best leather at a cost of approx. $1600. You can order the roof rack bars for approx. $100. You can order the "protection package" items for approx. $150.

Looks like this dealer is trying to make an extra $2000 on their Odysseys.
  • acsmithacsmith Member Posts: 63
The dealer is going for the big score!

Mud flaps cost about $60 and install in 15 minutes. The wheel locks cost about $27 and take 15 minutes; just unbolt one lug nut per wheel and bolt on the new one from the package. The trunk liner costs about $70 and takes all of 15 seconds to install--it just drops into the well.

Roof cross bars cost about $100. Installation takes a few minutes.

The leather is "after-market" only, and costs between $1200 and $1500.

I live in Sterling, VA, and went down I-95 to Pohanka Honda of Fredericksburg. On Nov 30 Janis Pohanka committed to deliver me a Dark Emerald Green EX in January. MSRP, no extras, but was clear that any extras were at MSRP. Fair enough. I got delivery on Jan 29, and got only two extras from them--tranny cooler--would cost $180 or so by mail from hondapartsforyou.com (shipping included) and they provided it for a total of $280. I got the cassette deck ($160 or so cost) but their price was $275 installed. I felt it was worth it for these two items, because (a) no hassles and (b) they are covered under the 7/100/0 warranty. If I put them in, no extended warranty.

I bought the trunk tub from hondapartsforyou.com and dropped it into the well myself, saving about $80.

Janis sold me the 7/100/0 warranty for $925 after I showed her that I could buy it from dealers mentioned here on this Edmunds thread for about $900. I just said "I'm buying the HondCare Warranty and I want to buy from you, but if you won't come close to what I can buy it for, I'll just buy from another dealer." She said $925, I agreed and we had a deal.

I suggest that if you can wait a month or two, you troll for dealers out of the DC area. DC area dealers all are going for $1000 to $2000 above MSRP (Hersons appears to be going for the dollars via outrageously priced extras). Also I recommend that you check out hondapartsforyou.com for prices for parts. Also, Trevor has a site and both Trevor and hondaparts.... have gotten good feedback on this thread.

We are looking at the Odyssey but have heard many different stories about the wait time and how to reserve a van. Has anyone had any experience in Nassau or Suffolk county and could give us some advice?
We are looking to have the van by July 21. That is when our current lease is up.

My sister is starting the Odyssey search process in Seattle. Has anyone worked with a dealership that they would recommend. Also, how are prices on the west coast? We purchased our Honda from Galley in Ohio, and liked Mark, had a great experience; under MSRP and a quick delivery date. Unfortunately that's a bit to far for my sister to go! We're at 20K without any problems, unlike our last van, a Dodge Caravan. This van drives great in snow and ice with the traction control. Would highly recommend it.

After 13 months of ambivalence towards my 2000 LX, I traded it in on a fancy European sports sedan and couldn't be happier. As practical as the Odyssey was, I hated to drive it. Much to my amusement, the dealer of fancy European sports sedans now has the Odyssey on his lot, listed at a price greater than what I paid new, INCLUDING tax and license. Mine was an MSRP deal from Pacific Honda in San Diego. I hope potential buyers are patient enough to seek out and buy their Ody's at no more than MSRP, even if it requires sitting on a waiting list. I also hope new Ody buyers will, as part of their test drive, attempt parking at their local Home Depot on a busy weekend.

    Best of luck, Ed

I just bought a Honda Odyssey EX today at Rosenthal Honda in Tyson Corner, VA. I paid 26400 (MSRP) with free mud guards and free oil change for two years (or 30000 miles which ever comes first). They said that delivery date is about 3-4 weeks (max). I also had VIN for the Odyssey. They also gave the quote for leather (around 1900). The saleman's first name is Clint. I forgot the last name but I can give you full information if you need them.

I've been following the discussion for a while now but haven't seen any pricing for the Denver area. I live in northern Colorado but may have to drive to Ky or Oh from what I'm reading here. I have relatives in the southern Il area so I may be willing to make the trip to that area to save some $. I did talk to the dealer in Greeley and the dealer in Ft.Collins. They both want MSRP and there is a several month waiting period. They also wanted to add dest/doc fees of about $300.

I saw many posting about EX prices. However, What is the price of LX near San Joe or nos Angles areas (or any small cities/towns a-few-hours away from them)?

The options my family need are key less entry and cargo tray.

My family thank you for any input.

Try HondaNorth in Danvers, MA. They sell for MSRP with no dealer add-ons,$99 doc. fee and they usually throw in something like locking wheel nuts or fenderwell trim. When I bought(Nov. 99)it was floormats but those are now standard. Anyways, they were very friendly and my dealings with them since have been hassle-free.
  • ravenxyravenxy Member Posts: 10
Based on some comments I read here, and their close proximity, I went to Honda North in Danvers. They offer a no haggle price on all their cars. You can see all their prices on their website: http://www.hondanorth.com/

In the case of the Odyssey, they sell at straight MSRP with no required add-ons. I put down a $500 refundable deposit at the beginning of January. I was quoted a March/April delivery for a Green Granite EX. A few weeks ago I decided I wanted the EX/Navi, and went in and talked to them. They had an unspoken for Green Granite EX/Navi due for mid-march delivery, so I put my name on it.

My only problem with Honda North so far, is that I was promised a test drive in their Odyssey loaner (yes they have one to loan out when your Odyssey is being serviced). Despite asking (and being promissed they would call me when the loaner was available) two more times about the test drive since, I still have not been called to set up the test drive.

I own a Honda Accord (great car) which I purchased at Honda Cars of Boston in Everett in 1996. At the time I was working near by that dealer so it was convenient. I haven't checked with any other dealers besides Honda North on the Odyssey, but I would have had no hesitation going back to Honda Cars of Boston if I was still working near by.

I ordered from Jay Honda about 10 days ago, was quoted a delivery date of 2/26, get here 6 days earlier. No damage. Picked up in a Hayward terminal (instead of Sunnyvale as they told me originally). But that is OK. One person asked about the name of salesman I talked to. Just in case anybody else want to know, I paid $600 under MSRP via Michael Stoughtone, though Dennis got involved later (I guess he's the one that handle their shipping etc).

Before I finalize this deal I contacted some other dealers. San Leandro Honda offered a white LX at 1000 + MSRP. Did not ask about the keyless entry. But Jay Honda was offering that for $179 with their LX which they say is dealer cost.

    Good luck,

    -Alex
