If you're concerned about Volvo servicing cost take a look at Edmunds' number for True Cost to Own. The GX470 looks like it will have significantly higher maintenance and repair costs over 5 years in comparison to the XC90 ($5,605 for the GX470 vs. $2,609 for the XC90.)

Of course these are projections only. There's not guarantees on models this new...

    Good luck.

I think it is inacurate to call the XC-90 "hot" as they simply have sold too few vehicles. True, the dealers have none of their lots, but that's because Volvo isn't supplying them. My data is from the Volvo dealers in the San Francisco bay area, which I assume (perhaps incorrectly) as a pretty solid market for Volvo. If the local dealer (in a very affluent community) has sold "about two dozen," and he has an "interested" list of 50 names, I see that as a supply issue, not a demand issue.

    Semantics semantics.

On another note, how do any of you feel about traveling to Sweden in June if the US invades Iraq soon? I'm not sure I am that comfortable with it.

    Regarding post #1160:

What's wrong with traveling to Sweden during a war? You won't be connecting in Iraq! You'll most likely be flying a European carrier (SAS) and your connection will probably be someplace like Amsterdam (Schipol) which had insane security way before 9/11. Personally I would feel less threatened being in Europe (as long as I don't drive around with an American flag) than in the U.S. during a war where radicals might be roaming American streets with bombs (or worse) strapped to their backs.

    Thanks.

We seriously entertained the idea of picking up our XC90 in Gothenburg, briefly staying in Sweden, then driving it to Northern Italy for two weeks and dropping it off in Nice. We were concerned about a potential war starting around that time, not to mention the idea of lugging our two young children around Europe. A cancellation at the local dealer made a car available to us much sooner, so we took it.

Aside from the wonderful perks offered by the TDS program, I have a college buddy living in Stockholm that we've visited before, so we were quite ready to sign up. Here are two things to consider if you do go that route:

    - Sweden is neutral, yet aggressively involved in world politics. My friend's native Swedish wife made this fact clear to me. Also, you can infer this from the appointment of a Swedish chief inspector in Iraq. They are much more politically aware than the average US citizen and don't typically side with Bush's policies. I wouldn't be surprised by a little disdain toward Amercans over there right now.
    - If you do fly over there, I'd try to get a direct flight rather than connecting through Europe. I highly doubt terrorists would target any fights in or out of Sweden right now. Swedish officials seems to be among those thwarting Bush's power play in the UN lately.

Good luck. I'm personally jealous of those that get to take advantage of the TDS adventure and I don't think one should put life on hold for this sort of thing. While researching the TDS program, I found them to be quite flexible. You might consider asking them if you can cancel your trip in the event of a war, yet still have your car sent over to you. You might be surprised.

Volvomax: Is it still looking like February for XC90 overseas delivery?

Also, do you have any guidance re (1) offroad ability and (2) snow ability. I am not planning on significant off-roading, but would like to derive off road, to get to favorite fishing holes. Also, if the "chains required" sign is up as I drive to Tahoe on 80, will I be able to get by with my All Wheel Drive, or will they only let 4wd vehicles go through without chains?

    Thanks.

and I'm not concerned about crazed Swedes pissed off at Bush taking out their aggression on my. I am sure they understand that a MAJORITY of us voted for GORE!!! (and probably an even larger percentage of Volvo drivers)

But how many people willingly traveled to Sweden on the eve of WW II? I know that's not really a fair comparison. Sorry to get political here.
  • sorelosermansoreloserman Member Posts: 2
"A majority of "us" voted for Gore", yeah and after all the vote fraud that "us" demonstrated in the most recent election, I'm so sure all those votes in 2000 were legit too. Get over it. I'm sure Al is thrilled were all driving an SUV that gets 15 mpg. This is a car forum, take your political ranting/crying over to salon.com

I thought that was history. Let's keep it there and get back to the XC90. Thanks.

My dealer is offering to "Perma-plate" my XC90 at the time of purchase for additional $695. It includes a coating applied to the paint that is supposed to take the place of waxing for the next five years, plus a leather treatment and fabric protection applied to the carpet. Is this worth getting?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Some changes to the Overseas program for the XC90.

Only 300 cars will be available, allocation will be based on a dealers previous TDS sales.
Most dealers will only get 1 car for TDS, some won't get any.
Orders will be accepted starting in March for delivery May/June or later.
Price will be MSRP, but you will recieve the 2 free roundtrip tickets.
    Offroad,
XC90 has anywhere from 8.5 to 9" of ground clearance.
More than enough to go off road as long as your not trying to climb boulders.
As for snow, you shouldn't need chains.
The Cross Country has been making the trip up I17 to Flagstaff in the winter without difficulty for years.
  • rbirns1rbirns1 Member Posts: 318
Ah, now it's called Perma-Plate? Years ago, it was Poly-Gly-Coat or Poly-Glo-Shield. I always called it Poly-want-a-ripoff! Do they also want you to buy rustproofing and undercoating?

With today's better quality paint, regular washing is all you really need. Keep the paint clean, and it will shine for many years.

These so-called permanent coatings perform no better than ordinary wax (which, once again, is usually unnecessary). If you often park under a tree, or are too lazy to wash the car regularly (or take it to a car wash), you would benefit from occasional waxing. It takes about an hour. If you want to avoid some elbow grease, you can buy an electric buffer for about $30. A bottle of high-end wax (Gliptone, Zaino, etc.) costs about $10. Turtle Wax and other major brands are even less. While not as long-lasting or durable as a good liquid or paste, even the quick-shine waxes (spray on, wipe off) will do the job for a short while.

Bottles of leather treatment and Scotchgard fabric sprays are available at every auto parts store, for just a few dollars.

Keep your $695. Use it for your first car payment. Or have the car professionally detailed and waxed every year (for 7 years).

Thanks so much for the feedback -- I just cancelled the perma-plate. As long as we are talking about "add-on's," does anyone have an opinion on the value of extended warranties through Volvo or something called "Networkcar" (priced at $1295) that looks to be a GPS-based lojack-type device (see www.networkcar.com/networkcar/pub/whatitdoes)?

One poster recommended that I call up all Volvo dealers within 2 hour driving distance... I took the delivery of the vehicle this morning (Sat - Feb 1)...

Congratulations! That poster was myself and I know that a bit of persistence always pays off in the end. What color T6 did you get and what options/accessories?
  • rollierollie Member Posts: 337
xc90fav, I can't speak to the value of a Volvo extended warranty without knowing the price but it's not a bad idea in general for vehicles this complex if you plan to keep it after the warranty period expires.

I can tell you that I went through a similar analysis for my S80T6 about a year ago and ended up selecting Warranty Gold's top plan in the end. I've used it a few times with no problems and not a cent out of my pocket.

Regarding the Networkcar, I'm not familiar with this specific solution. I do have LoJack in both of my Volvos and have had them since I bought them. At a minimal, I recommend these devices for the insurance discount alone. $1,295 is a lot for a locator but I haven't priced LoJack recently (I'd be surprised if it is over $650 though). Check around for price options and then find out how much of a discount your insurance company provides. In my case, my LoJack's paid for themselves in about 3 years so it was a no brainer for me.

    Good luck.

I pick up the XC90 tomorrow at which time the dealer will no doubt be detailing the extended warranty pricing options that I will then have 30 days to decide on. Your point about the complexity of the car seems a good one, especially given that it is a new model, so I will likely opt for one of the warranty plans. Thanks much for the feedback.
  • nominomi Member Posts: 3
Congratulations! What color and options are you getting? For the warranty, are you getting a discounted price if you purchase within 30 days? According to my dealer, you can purchase the plan from Volvo any time before your warranty is up. Of course, the price can change until you buy it. Personally, I was going to wait a couple of years and see...
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
First, it is always a good idea to keep your car waxed.
At least 4 times a year.
The perma-plate is a rip, no wax lasts longer than a few months, just get some good wax and do it yourself.
Second, IF you are planning on keeping your car past the warranty it is an excellent idea to get an extended warranty. No matter who makes the car.
The longer you wait however, the higher the price.
Best to do it inside of the first 3 yrs of ownership.

It is a Silver one with the T6 Premium Package, Versatility Package, and Climate Control Package. I think the only major ticket item that I didn't add was the DVD-based navigation system and a LCD-mount rear entertainment system (which I dont think it's being offered yet). So, I think I got the fully loaded top-of-the-line.

BTW, I haven't had the time to go through the owner's manual or watch the instructional video, but I can't seem to locate a dedicated space for my coins. It looks like there is a cup holder at every imaginable place, but I haven't found a convenient place to store some of my loose change. I guess I have to always wear a pair of pants with pockets.
  • adp3adp3 Member Posts: 446
    thanks for the info. Volvomax

with so few available int he overseas delivery program, I guess delivery at the dealer is more likely

as to chains and snow, I don't know how the road to Flagstaff compares to I-80- To Tahoe. I se Spiders on my Grand Caravan, which is fine, but would hate to buy Spiders for my xc90.

In about 2 weeks I plan on going to the local dealers and checking out the XC90. I have seen that there is a several month wait and was wondering when the change from 2003 to 2004 model happens. Might as well get the 2004 if it is close.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Will be appearing @June or so.
We should find out next week what changes are planned, if any.
I'm sure if you have an order placed and it can't be filled w/ an '03 than you will be moved to an '04.
  • wmquanwmquan Member Posts: 1,817
Will the '04's have bi-xenons available immediately? That'd be great!
  • xc90fanxc90fan Member Posts: 1
Just finished the deal on a Crystal Green T6 with all options except xenons and security. Having a few accessories (aluminum crossbars, networkcar) installed with my salesman then driving the car to my door Thursday at which time he will also be picking up the 2.5T he has let me use as a loaner for the last three weeks since my car was delayed in its arrival (nice service!).

Since I hope to keep the car for a good long while, I also opted for the 84 month/100k extended warranty (priced at around $2k w/ $100 per incident deductible -- I was told this was the 2002 rate and that the price would be going up though they couldn't say when).

Though I will have more feedback after more time driving the T6, here are some first impressions based on today's test drive.

I was able to elicit the turbo whine that has been commented upon here and elsewhere (http://www.geocities.com/xc901212/xc90.html) on the T6 with ease but not the 2.5T. The sound, however, was subtle, and by my taste, quite bearable.

The acceleration and maneuverability of the T6 at lower speeds seemed less than the 2.5T. I had not noticed a difference during the "driving experience" event held here at El Toro air base, but I'm guessing having three weeks with a 2.5T rather than a few minutes may explain my greater sensitivity this time.

Also notable with my T6 was the lack of a constant high-pitched whine emanating from the sunroof when closed and traveling above 50 mph. This sound had cropped up within the first week of driving the 2.5T, and became very consistent and rather unnerving. I read on one of these forum messages of a similar example fixed by replacing a fitting around the sunroof.

More feedback once my baby has arrived.

I had a similar issue with my Audi TT. It was a well-documented defect in the diverter valve. I am going to bring it up at my 60 day service check. Has anyone asked their dealership about this issue yet? Thanks.

My old nissan had a whistle in the moonroof. After many impossible trips to the dealer, I tried my dad's trick (I was reluctant since it was brand new and the dealer should fix it), silicone spray on a papertowel and wipe down the weatherstripping around the moonroof. I did this twice a year and never had a problem again. This made the weatherstripping a little more sticky.
  • mirage00mirage00 Member Posts: 7
They say it will be delivered in June. I asked what model year it would be, because since I'm leasing I would much rather have the 2004 (the residual value) would be higher which means a lower payment in a lease. The salesman could not answer. he said it will either be a 2003 or 2004. Comments? I have my fourth child due in June, so I can not wait past then to get the truck. I'm out of room in my e320 with 3 kids.

I ordered the car on January 20 and the dealer told me I'd be receiving a 2004 sometime in June or early July.

Our CD player jammed this weekend with 5 discs trapped inside. I'm bringing it in Friday. Anyone else have this experience yet. I feel like I should have seen it coming since the changer made little noises that sounded like small plastic gears stripping while switching CD's internally. Has anyone else heard such sounds, or is the player normally silent during disc changes?
  • crikeycrikey Member Posts: 1,041
Were the trapped CDs commercial CDs, i.e bought from store, or burnt CDs?
If burnt CDs, did they have labels?
Or is it a mix of commercial or burnt CDs?
  • i_yellowi_yellow Member Posts: 30
4 commercial CDs, 1 burned CD, no labels. I can see where you're going with the label question (peeling off), but I'm not sure why a burned CD would matter. Sharon uses burned CDs with no problems (see message #965).
  • crikeycrikey Member Posts: 1,041
Yeah, I was more interested in burnt CDs with labels.
  • sharonsharon Member Posts: 76
Yep, I have only burned CDs in my changer. No problems yet, knock on wood. No, I don't have labels on them--I'm too lazy!

There is a post on volvospy that mentions a jammed CD player. It's a page or two back in that forum.

Did the problem happen while loading a disk, or during playback? Bummer. Let us know what happens.

There are a few stuck CD posts around Town Hall - seemed to be a Pathfinder issue a year or so ago with a couple of people there. There was some finger pointing at burned, unlabeled CD-R's but nothing definitive was posted that I could find.

I guess that the multi-CD changers don't have an emergency reject pinhole for the paperclip trick....

Does anyone know when (or if) the XC90 will have any type of an "On Star" type system? Also when the DVD player will be available. Thanks!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
On-Call Plus, Volvo's version of On-Star should be available for the '04 models.
We'll find out later this month.
The dealer installed DVD system won't be available till June.
We have our own system that we are installing in our XC90's.
  • londonfinlondonfin Member Posts: 31
Thanks Volvomax. I assume as soon as someone knows what will change in the '04s I'll read it here first! I'm torn between the XC90 and a Land Cruiser. I know...different animals but I like both. Each has its good points and I really need to decide if I need the cargo room of the LC or if I can get by with the XC. I also want the first year bugs out of the XC. The LC has had loads of years to work things out. I'm not in a rush so I guess I'll see what changes in the '04's. Anyone have any thoughts between the two vehicles? Thanks to all for great info!

If you are installing your own third-party DVD systems, then presumably there is a way to connect auxiliary devices (sound) into the MOST (Alpine) modular digital sound system. Are you guys hardwiring into the sound system? Or do you have a special OEM connector to get it integrated?

The reason why I ask, of course, is because of the previous posts about getting auxiliary connections for an iPod MP3 player to hook up to this Alpine sound system. It seems such a shame that Volvo overlooked this technology trend. (New car stereos are now fancying hard drives, MP3 capabilities and connectivity to satellite radio, not just digital radio.)

Am I being hopeful that there is a way???

I'm a little vague on the details, but I do know that we are having to pipe the sound for the dvd through the radio.
I believe we have to use an fm transmitter to get the sound from the dvd to the cars system.

You can't hook anything non-volvo to the factory system.
Nothing will work directly with the factory system without the software from Volvo to integrate it.

Thanks for the reply Max. Forgive me for calling it "kludgey and makeshift" but his FM transmitter doesn't sound too promising. If you get any more details, let us know. Thanks again.

Drove the T6 today and really loved it. I am getting ready to put down a refundable deposit for a 2004 and basically tell them what I want. At the time my order goes in my deposit becomes non-refundable. They say May/June delivery which is fine with me. Cost is MSRP. Does this sound right? Also trying to decide on Security Pkg. Don't want to lose the tinted windows. Is this a worthwhile package? Also Bi Xenons. Never had them...are they really that much better? I don't care about "blue" color just good visibility. Thanks!

Just saw my first Volvo commercial on national TV the other night in the Bay area during the 10:00 news. Has there been ads on TV in other parts of the country? First SUV ad I've seen having an women and child with no macho rock climbing, mud slinging, dust making. Focusing on the safety aspect.

anyone come up with some ingenious way to fit two bikes behind the second row securely (without removing the rear wheels)? i'd rather carry bikes internally, but the volvo rack requires folding the second row. i've measured my bike with the front wheel removed, and it will require angling it to the point where only one bike will fit if the fork is mounted at floor level... maybe if i put a fork-mount board up higher... any other ideas???

    Actually the system works fabulously.
We've done half a dozen and everyone loves it.
The surround sound on the PL2 system is as good as my home system.

Just got a call from my dealer to say my nautic blue/Taupe XC90 T6 arrived in halifax yesterday and will be ready to go feb 12 I ordered it on dec 10 - so 2 months and a boatload on the bottom of the english channel later I get it. Not bad at all. For those of you wondering where yours is - check your local intl airport - Volvo has one in every airport in North America. Volvo has unleashed a serious advertising campaign in canada which I see as somewhat irresponsible given that some people who put deposits dowm last may are still without one. Anyhow I got filled - Good luck to everyone

After placing my order for a XC-90, it arrived at the dealer the other day with much fanfare. Strangely, when we tried to pick it up, the dealer hustled us into a room to sign the papers prior to our seeing or inspecting the vehicle. When I balked and demanded to see the XC-90 and invoice, they reluctantly handed over the details. Somehow, the Bi-Xenon headlights, which we had ordered did not appear on the invoice. The salesman made up some kind of b.s. explanation that Volvo was having some problems with the lights and weren't installing them. In fact, he remarked, they had received a bulletin to this regard.

To me, the whole thing smelled rotten. I think that the dealer had neglected to order the headlights and was making up a bunch of crap. I called two other dealers who said that they never heard of this bulletin.

I have waited over six months for this vehicle and don't want to wait six more. Thoughts?
  • nominomi Member Posts: 3
    1) Decide if you can live without them. Can you be happy with it as is? If not, it doesn't matter even if they give you some free stuff (accessories, service, discounts etc.) If you don't want aftermarket, Volvo have said that this is only a factory option. Beware if they try to tell you they can add it later at an unknown cost.

    2) It won't take another six months. If you can wait, when your dealer gets its next allocation, (I think every 3 weeks to a month), you should be given first choice to reorder and config a new XC90. Depending on timing, it could be an '04 and there could be a price increase. From that point on, it should not take more than 8-12 weeks. And they can show you the status on their regular status reports which list the options on the car, which bring me to point 3

    3) While it's possible the factory deleted the options, your dealer still should have know because the xenons would have been missing on that report. So they could have told you as soon as they realized it instead of what they did (This is assuming that they didn't forget to order it, which would be even more unacceptable.)

    4) You should not have to deal with dealers like this. But if you don't take your car, I think there are probably others in line for it. So you can ask for concessions, but I am not sure that they will give anything meaningful...

    5) To start over at another dealership will take much longer. You might be able to get a cancelled XC90 from another dealer, but it's not likely to have xenons or be close to what you ordered. (Which is what I ended up doing with mine.)

If you look over some of my previous posts you will see that I am a five time Volvo owner who has made the switch. This is because I have become exceptionally frustrated with our MA/NH Volvo dealer. In my opinion, the attitude seems to be -- "we don't care about you because we have lots of other people in the wings." So, I hope you do file with the attorney general in your state and stick it to the Volvo dealer. It's not going to get any better, only worse as so many are now interested in the XC90. Good luck and let us know what happens. You may want to cancel the order, get your money back, and find another vehicle before you sign on the dotted line. It's not too late to turn back now!
  • armdarmd Member Posts: 33
What really bothered me about the encounter was the attitude the dealer took. It was almost as though they were hiding and lying about the whole affair. I recognize that mistakes can occur, as they do in my profession, but at least we try to make it right for the consumer. Had the dealership been up front about the gaffe or even more sympathetic, we would have felt better about the transaction.

As it stands, the original order sheet had the correct information but the invoice/vehicle doesn't. Yesterday, the salesman produced a "corrected" order sheet with a single line drawn through the xenon lights (more fabrication). He was certain that he spoke to us weeks ago to tell us that the lights were not available (another lie).

From my standpoint I really have two options: 1) Take the car and call them the appropriate names they deserve, 2) Order from another dealer (no one's taking orders until mid-March), waiting until May/June for delivery, filing a grievance with the attorney general's office, publish a more detailed account (this was the significantly abbreviated version) along with the dealer's name on the internet, and suing them as well for breach.
