Ok kind Altima Coupe owners out there i have narrowed my car search to the coupe. I drove yesterday and liked better than camry and honda. In process of getting 4 quotes from (friendly) dealers in my area, haha
SO does anyone have a strategy that works on good negotiating techniques? Is there a percentage off the sticker i can try to shoot for? I read somewhere depending on car you can get 7-22 percent off sticker,
Unfortunately, I have learned that one of the best times to buy a new car is right before the end of a quarter. I think some amazing deals here were made because it was June 30. Now, the dealer loses some incentives for sales in the quarter and may be slightly less anxious to deal. I am betting the time just before the Sept. 30 date would be a GREAT time for deals on 2009s.
wow just my luck, just discovered the 1500$ cash back incentive no longer valid on the coupe, expired yesterday, possible deal breaker! Maybe this is a sign.........
does anyone know when the car allowance rebate system program begins, i just heard about this and my old clunker qualifies. Suppose to have started yesterday but the dealers i have talked to dont know?? Here is a link check this out http://www.cars.gov/
Current deals for the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area, plus some Chicago for an Altima 2.5S with Splash Guards and Floor Mats (standard):
Current rebates: $1,500 July, $500 until July 8th, $500 College Grad, $4,500 CFC/CARS. $179 state inspection required for all new cars (I hear).
Current initial internet offers (not including rebates and inspection, but includes splash guards and floor mats): Rosen (Brown Deer) - $20,320 Boucher Waukesha - $20,131 ($21,067 with Convenience Package) Boucher West Allis - $20,546 Russ Darrow (Brown Deer) - $19,914 M'Lady (Crystal Lake, IL) - $19,431 McGrath (Elgin, IL) - $19,611
I asked several of them if they were participating in the C.A.R.S. program right now and only Russ Darrow is; all the others are waiting until July 24th to start making deals. So for most of them, I won't be able to combine Cash for Clunkers with the $500 July 8th rebate.
So I'm planning to offer $19,000 - $1,500 - $500 - $500 - $4,500 = $12,000 plus Tax, Title, Registration and see if I can get that deal from one of the dealers willing to make C.A.R.S. sales this week.
Think you need to read up on leasing before you jump into one. You NEVER put $5000 down on a lease. $3735 in taxes? Even in a state like NY where they make you pay the full tax amount on a lease it wouldn't be that high. Using your selling price figure that calculates to over 13% in tax. This deal just feels bad.

Because you pay for the use of a vehicle during a lease, you should put as little money down as possible, up front. Although putting money down can lower your lease payments (by reducing your capitalized cost) in most cases it cannot be regained in the event of early termination due to a loss.
For example, a customer once leased a Toyota 4Runner and put $3,000 down as a cap reduction. Five months later the vehicle was totaled in an accident. The client's insurance paid its portion of the lease payoff and Gap Insurance paid the balance. Our client walked away with only paying his insurance deductible but he did not get reimbursed for his initial down payment of $3,000. It was lost.
The moral of this true story is to put as little money down as possible, ideally no money down. Here are some other things to consider:
- Money down is taxable - Take the money you would have put down and invest it - Put your down payment in a savings account and use a portion each month to help make your lease payment

I am planning to buy a 2.5 S (Precision Grey) and my best dealer quote in this area (Binghamton, NY) is 21,040 OTD (after 1500 rebate, College Grad rebate and dealer discouts).Could any one give me a heads up so as how much to ask for. I am really not sure of the current price trends and any help would be greatly appreciated.
OTD is pretty much a worthless number for comparison sake since every state has a different OTD number. You are better off giving the selling price of the car.

I'm in NY as well and I picked up a 2.5S CVT for $19700 OTD yesterday. This was from Hudson Nissan in NJ. No NY dealer could match it. Heck one dealer told me to go and try to get it in NJ.
The best quote that I was able to get was from FitzMall in PA, at $19500 OTD. But it was a 4.5 hour drive one way.
$5000.00 Down? Have you leased a car before? The idea is sign and drive. Not put 5K down. On a sign and drive the math works out to maybe 400 a month. Doesnt look like anything special to me.
Thats an awesome deal. Was that for the CVT or Manual?
Keep in mind though that the 'deals' are usually limited to different regions.
I had to pay 8.375% sales tax while you paid if I am not mistaken 5%, that comes to a $600 difference OTD. Even with that factored in, you still got an amazing price.
BTW my selling price was $18000 before TTL, so you did better than me by $230. But like I said I was offered $17800 + TTL from FitzMall in PA. I just didn't want to drive out there.
Yes that is 100% correct. In my original post, I stated that I live in NY and purchased from a NJ dealer. I paid NY tax (8.375%). I should have included the sales price in the original post.
So far the best sales price on a 2.5S CVT is $17777 (after rebates). Who can do better?
It would be nice if Edmunds had a database where people were able to submit the exact deals they got. It would make it easier for new buyers.
Went looking for an Altima today in the tri-state. Went to two dealerships and could not get them to come below $19,100 not including tax, title and fees. They informed me that the incentives for June were better and that was the time to buy. Has anyone done better than this price?
Well the $500 Holiday cash just ended on July 8th. I not sure what they are talking about, but I'm looking at the numbers with the holiday cash.
The best recent price (based on what people have posted on this forum) was $17777, I personally got $18000. So without that $500 incentive, you should be around $18400 (Sales Price) + TTL.
This is for the 2.5S with CVT.
If you want, enable your email to other members (in the forum preferences) and I'll email you the exact details.
No, I haven't yet purchased the Altima 2.5S in Milwaukee yes, but I did go in on Friday (7/10/09) and the dealership drew up a contract, so I can tell you how much the price would have been OTD. I didn't take it because I wanted to negotiate the scrap value for my 93 Jeep.
MSRP $22,505 (Nissan Altima 2.5S 4dr CVT with Splash Guards and Floor Mats (the base S model)) + Service Fee $179 (legally authorized in WI and I negotiated with this fee built into the final price. similar to a 'doc fee' in other states) - "discount" $3341 = $19,343 negotiated price
+ $1083.21 = 5.6% sales tax (rebates are taxed in WI, but not in all states) + $113 gov't fees for registration, plate transfer - $6,500 rebates: $4,500 CARS, $1,500 July Customer Cash (instead of finance rate), $500 college grad
= $14039.21 OTD (not including down payment)
Even with the requirement of financing through them, the rate is around 6% for well-qualified customers, so the $1,500 cash is going to be better than the 2.9% finance rate for most people as long as you put some money down.
So I entered my price at www.realcartips.com, but was surprised at how few details they collect. Just MSRP, rebates, and cost. Would be nice if they had blanks for other fees, what type of rebates, etc, just for comparison purposes. It is good that they're collecting user-submitted price info, though. Another good site is www.truecar.com, which collects public data about pricing trends and average sale prices. No details about each deal, but good general price guidance.
Thanks for your detailed information. My local dealer insists on the msrp-rebate, which is $22505-$1500, and they said i am not qualified for the $500 college grad because i am not graduated within past 6 months...
Looking at buying a new 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe 2.5 s with the Convenience Package ($1120, invoice) with moonroof ($740). MSRP was $25,000. Invoice price was $22,800. The dealership has it for $21,000 closeout price. I got them down to $19,500. But i don't get the $1500.00 rebate because it is a 2008. I also have a cash for clunkers car that no one in their right mind would give more than $700.00 for that will take off another $3500.00. I know this car has already depreciated about $1500.00 since it is an 08. Is $19,500 a decent price without the cash for clunkers? What are people paying for the 09's with similar packages?
I have a local dealer with some 2008’s also. I used to work for a dealership and a few things to consider with a car sitting that long. If the dealership let the battery go deal in the winter it is mostly damaged from freezing. The brake pads may be seized in place. There are the problems with old gasoline. The only time the car may have been moved is if they needed to plow the lot for snow and they will just put a jump box on it started it up for second to move it. There is also lot damage that occurs. Basically you are buying a used car and should inspect it as such. Last they may be improvements on the 2009 compared to the 2008 which I think is the first year of the redesign. I would ask for much more of a discount. When the 2010's come out I would think they would be in a panic to see their remaining 2008 go which I was told cannot even be leased as they are considered used.

$1500 factory to consumer rebate
$1500 hidden factory to dealer rebate
As sales explained to me:
Dealer lost additional holdback/more to meet quota for additional sales bonus.
14 other local (DC) dealers wouldn't touch the price.
They drove it down to me, and it was nice and painless.

Only took a year to sort all that out... Now, just don't get me started on the Social Security Administration..

MSRP minus rebates it not a good price.
