I had the tranny cooler installed on my 2000 Odyssey two years ago, and my work order lists the total cost as $329. The cooler was $239, the 1.5 hours of labor $90. Hope this helps.

Ody01, what makes you think that owners of other minivans would be jealous of the Odyssey? Especially after having read the Odyssey Problems Board and the previous posts listed above. People are buying these vans at about $25k+ and then adding on $800-l600 extended warranties and it appears that many are also purchasing the tow package for an additional $800+. And this after having to deal with rude salespeople, put down a deposit, and then waiting anywhere from several weeks to 6 or more months for my car? Jealous? I don't think so. Confused maybe, but not jealous.

I see this long weekend is drawing some critics to our web site. They also go by other names.

If you are looking for something to criticize,(a car), this week end, with a lot of time on your hands and nothing better to do, go to the link below. They list the worst cars ever. I disagree on only one, and that is the Dodge Aspen/Volare Station Wagon. I use to own one and it lasted me 10 years and about 120,000 miles and no major problems, before I sold it to someone, who I actually saw driving around in Los Angeles as his work vehicle. It also had lots of power with the largest engine, a 360 cu in engine. In order to get that engine in California however, I had to buy it in Arizona.

Now compare the cars listed, to the Odyssey, which is not listed.

If I understand you correctly, the OEM tires on the Ody are 215 65-16 and you replaced with 235 60-16. Not knowing anything about this, what advantages does this have and what if any disadvantages are there.
Rockycow says the speedo will read further off than it already does.
As I need a new set of tires any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
  • kroliphkroliph Member Posts: 75
Thanks for the numbers!! I'll make sure they don't charge me more than that.
  • rockycowrockycow Member Posts: 114
The 235/60/16's will bring your speedo closer to an accurate reading. The Ody speedos reflect a higher speed than you are actually traveling. The 235's will cause the speedo to indicate lower speed by .4%, probably not enough to correct the speedo error but moving in the right direction

Here's a link to a tire size calculator. Tells you resultant speedometer differences when you change size.

Also the 02 Odyssey switched to a 225X60 16 so that brings them closer to the 235 x60's that a lot of people here are buying as replacements.

I love my 2002 Honda Odyssey. Refined power train, comfortable, plenty of room and handles great. However, it does have one slight weakness, and that is pronounced road noise. It comes equipped with Michelins, which handle great, but I feel contribute to the road noise. For the future, I would like to switch to a quiet tire that hopefully has the same performance. Anybody have success with some other brand of tire?
  • billg7billg7 Member Posts: 342
Thats a good question and I would really appreciate an answer also.

I notice that in my 2000 Odyssey EX with the same M tires, that I get little road noise on asphalt roads, which is what most of the roads here are. It is concrete where the noise becomes objectionable. That does indicate to me that the problem is the tires and their tread pattern.

Also where I live I have no need for snow tires so I don't need good snow tires.

I replaced the Firestones on my 2000 LX a few months back with Goodyear Aquatread 3's. They are a little quieter than the old tires, but not much. I picked them because of the frequent downpours in LA (lower Alabama) and was concerned about handling in the rain. I bought them through tirerack.com and they have all kinds of info on their website with reviews of different tires from the folks that have bought them. I had the tires drop shipped to a local tire dealer who installed them for a slight markup above normal installation charges. The price at Tirerack was well below what I could find at local dealers and more than made up for the shipping and installation charges. I highly recommend their website and the reviews are helpful in deciding which tire might be best for you.

I did not buy the enter. system because I felt the DVD screen was too small.

Has anyone here looked at aftermarkets DVD/TV combos? I went back and read some post discussing it but not specific recommendations

    thanks

If you can handle the imperfect cosmetic appearance, I really liked the suggestion I read about using a laptop. 15" screen, prop up on console, use aux power outlet, and you have a great laptop when not using it in the car. All for slightly higher price than RES. SOme obvious drawbacks -- no infrared headphones, more cumbersome, possible projectile in an accident unless you rig a solid setup. But it bears consideration. I, too, put off buying the RES, thinking I could do better aftermarket, and I am considering this option.

If you are interested in using a laptop for DVD check out jottodesk.com for different things to secure your laptop in the van.

We are in the market for the EXL-RES Havasu Blue Odyssey. Just found out that the Pilot will not work for us. Does anyone know when this color will be available. Dealer is no help. Thanks
  • bdaddybdaddy Member Posts: 171
Havasu supposed to be out in June-July, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Honda known for being late with new color additions.
  • formy3kidsformy3kids Member Posts: 40
I just called Honda, she told me it was available to order in mid -April. Hmmm. I also heard they had some problems with the paint. This will be interesting.
  • mark189mark189 Member Posts: 107
Unless in you are in no hurry at all, the sooner you put a deposit down the better. It may be different in your area, but most areas still have waiting lists for Odysseys. I also suggest checking with more than one dealer on pricing to be sure you can buy at MSRP.
  • walettiwaletti Member Posts: 2
    A. Thanks for the answer on tire selection. The tire rack definetly has lot of info.

    B. My guess is you won't find any info on 2003's ahead of time. Most dealers conceal this info in hopes of selling 2002's currently available, especially if there are significant upgrades with little or no increase in price. In fact some dealers will out and out lie in order to make a sale. (as if that's a surprise)

C.You can find trans coolers and other Honda accessories discounted at handa-accessories.com on the web. I am awaiting shipment on an air filter so I cannot comment on their customer service until I get delivery, but it appears that they do have some good discounts on their web site.
  • formy3kidsformy3kids Member Posts: 40
Called my dealer, we can be on the June build for delivery June 15-July 15. The price for the EX-L-RES in Havasu Blue is as follows:

    MSRP 30,190
    -699.00 Internet order
    29,491 subtotal
    884.73 NC Sales Tax
199.00 Processing Fee (can't get out of)
    56.00 Tag and reg. Fee
    Total 30,630.73

Please let me know what you think.

I test drove a 2002 Odyssey EX and thought that the middle row seats were very comfortable but the front passenger seat was not. Something about the way the back lumbar area hit me. Is this characteristic of the van or did could there have been something wrong with it?
  • csvipersahcsvipersah Member Posts: 15
The lumbar is adjustable, maybe it was just in a position that was uncomfortable to you.
  • tj_610tj_610 Member Posts: 132
I found a new way to irritate my wife. I'm 6'10", Ody front seats are short on leg room. But I have found new luxury! I've been sitting behind her, next to my 16 month old son with the 2nd row seats pushed together. Now we get to play, I have lots of leg room, my own air vent right on my head, and my own power sliding door! LOL. Needless to say, she is unhappy with the chauffer image she now projects.

P.S. Is the front passenger lumbar adjustable? That's news to me. I know the driver side is.
  • dchoppdchopp Member Posts: 256
Is there a difference in seat comfort between the cloth and the leather? The salesmen said no but what I can remember from the auto show a few months back, there was a difference. Anyone else notice a difference?
  • phil47phil47 Member Posts: 394
You think that's good...have you tried the "strato-lounger" option? Remove the front passenger seat headrest, push the seat fully forward and recline the seatback until level. It will tuck nicely in front of the second row seat cushion. Sitting in the second row seat, you now have a full lounger with a great view of the road!! Try it...you'll love it.

I bought a Mesa beige odyssey in December and I was wondering if there is a die cast replica scaled about 1/18 or 1/24. Blue paint comes in mid April. Voss Honda says it will come early May. Couldn't wait for blue paint. we needed one by the day after christmas.

We purchases a TV/DVD combo last week for our '02 Ody. I was all set to make make a sort of box platform so the front of the TV could tip-up at an angle from on the floor between the two front seats, when we found the perfect device for just this sort of thing at Target - for $14.99. The TV/DVD combo was $299 (Costco). We're quite happy with it. I'm considering taking the extension out of the tray in the middle so we can set the TV back just a bit. Anyway, hope this helps.

I am upset due to the fact that when the high beams are activated, the low beams decrease in intensity? (or is it just ours that is not wired correctly by the factory?)

Can somebody expand on this! is it normal?, can it be fixed?

I ordered stuff for our Odyssey on Christmas day and it arrived before the New year. I then tried to contact HandA (Trevor) about ordering some things for my 2001 Accord which are not on his website - air filter, ventilation filter, etc. I e-mailed HandA AT LEAST three times and called their 800 number also AT LEAST three times. I'm still, two months later, waiting for Trevor to return either my calls or e-mails. So if what you want is on the website, fine. If you have questions, problems, etc, it seems you'll wait 'till Hell freezes over before you'll get an answer, if you EVER do!

I've ordered a number of items from HandA, and had very good service from Trevor. I've never had a problem with the 800 number or their instant messaging system online. On the other hand, I have had a few ignored emails over the last year.

I've also had good service with hparts.com

Thanks for the great info.We are at a decision-point with a lease on a 99 Odyssey that expires in June and need some help.

Our decision is to go now with a 2002 EX cloth preferably in blue (I know that we are currently talking June/July for blue, earlier for other colors) or wait for 2003 models (I am assuming October). I have been quoted MSRP in NY Area (Long Island) for 2002. I have another car to bridge the timeframe if we should wait till the fall, so that is not compelling issue (fortunately). We won't keep our 1999 - too much of a problem with the electrical system and the doors specifically. Otherwise, great car.

In earlier posts, some have said that info on 2003 Odyssey is illusive and should remain so. You have also said the features are not likely to change that much. Others have said that the '03 Sienna, rather than the Pilot, is probably the most viable alternative for those looking to keep in a minivan.

So here are my questions (thanks for your help):

    1. Any more info on how the 2003 od or sienna will compare to 2002 od? Is the blue likely to add cost to our negotiations?
    2. If we want blue, is it better to get the 2002 since new colors in the fall might be delayed?
    3. Does the Sienna have the same hideaway 3rd row and other similar features? When would it be available and for how much?
    4. What are the 'hidden costs' that would end up adding back in expense (eg. transmission enhancements, even if don't want to tow, throw in features like mud flaps, alternate tires from dealer, etc .I also read all about the honda extended care coverage already, but not sure what internet discount is and how to qualify).
    5. What are the likely schedules for the 2003 models and any ideas how to improve availability to get one of the earliest ones?

Thanks again to anyone who can help.

I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to go to a
delearship and say " I'd like to Buy a Honda Ody." I only paid MSRP of 27,190, a small $25 processing fee and that was it.
With no haggling over price or features being extra, you just get what you pay for. You don't have to sit in those little cubicles with your life on parade. The only thing I would complain about is the delearship itself. I put my money down, sold another vehicle, for the down, and then they say it was allocated to someone else. So, I ended up waiting three weeks for the vehicle I thought was mine in the first place. The salesman run-around was also a pain. But, what can you do when there is only one Honda delearship in your town. It's either buy locally or go out of state. In the end it was all worth it, also opted for the 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty through Honda which seemed to be the most comprehensive, for the money. Plus, the high country package, which includes, fabric protectant, paint sealer and an undercoating to prevent rust and cold weather damage. Thanks, Happy with my odyssey
  • dave84dave84 Member Posts: 75
How much did you pay for the "high country" package?
  • baileybradbaileybrad Member Posts: 33
this might be optimistic thinking on my part. I have read posts in the past about the '99 and early '00 Odys having occasional tranmission problems. My thought is that if these problems do not arise early on, say first 12k or so, the chances of the problem occurring later are greatly reduced. Is there a high probablilty that this is the case. Our '99 was delivered in late model year '99 (Aug.14) and has 38k on it. We have experienced (knock on our wallets) no problems whatsoever. Can anybody offer any comments on this? Thanks.
  • stangeljstangelj Member Posts: 74
I'm in the same boat as you, except my 99 EX lease is up in December. I've been monitoring the Sienna board and scanning the web but about all that's known about the 03 Sienna is it will be bigger than the current version, and not due out until late this year. Unfortunately, another topic has been dominating the Sienna discussion of late.

Right now we are leaning to buying out our Odyssey's lease and keeping it as it's currently worth about $5,000 CDN more than the buy out plus tax, and has been trouble-free. 2nd most likely option is to buy-out and sell (and pocket the $5,000) and then replace with a leased 03 Ody. If the 03 Sienna turns out to be major step ahead then it will be another option if we sell.
  • stangeljstangelj Member Posts: 74
Your theory makes sense to me. You and I both have avoided any tranny problems to-date. Mine was a relatively early 99, took delivery in December 98, and the transmission has worked flawlessly. I've had a couple other vehicles where the transmission gave up the ghost after about 8 years, so you never know.
  • odyhopefulodyhopeful Member Posts: 2
I also have had good luck dealing with Trevor.

We did have a problem getting an email to him once, but it was a result of a link on their web site that wasn't directed to him. Wish I could be of more help but its been so long I forget all of the details.
  • billg7billg7 Member Posts: 342
I would not tell anyone what you paid for the high country package, because a number of people would just say, that's too much. So either don't tell them or tell them a very low $ number to avoid criticism.

"Plus, the high country package, which includes, fabric protectant, paint sealer and an undercoating to prevent rust and cold weather damage.

A lot of times the dealers make a good profit from these packages and the value you get from them is questionable. That's what Consumers Reports says anyway. I was wondering if they still under coated cars and I see they still do. I was thinking that would help reduce the road noise some people complain about with the Odyssey.

Drove from Western,Pa to Columbus ,Ohio to celebrate my 60th birthday with my son and his family along with a few friends. Drove to Cleveland, Ohio to Rick Case Honda (Ohio's largest dealer) to test drive the new 2002 Ody EX. We arrived at 11:45 am and completed our test drive at 12:30pm. they had four on the lot that were for sale. Picked out the GG EX. We were treated to a nice lunch at a popular Sports Pub. By 2:45 pm, we were on our way back home. Total wait time about 2hours and 15min. Not the Five to Eight months that our local Honda Dealer had specified and did not have any to test drive. And the good news is they knocked off $800 of the sticker price, bought the Extended 7 year 100,000 mile Honda warrenty for $820.00,Received several free coupons for oil and filter changes, received a life time unlimited free dealer car washes and a four day 3 night vacation in Orlando, Florida with unlimited free golfing. It was a great weekend.
  • dmathews3dmathews3 Member Posts: 1,739
The road noise is only on certain concrete highways and is very quiet on blacktop. So I think it is mostly in the tires. I have the Ziebart stuff they put on for noise protection and it helps going down a gravel road where you get those stones hitting the bare metal but it doesn't help the singing sound on those concrete roads.
  • dave84dave84 Member Posts: 75
Oh, come on, give me a break. It sounds like 3beems was very happy with his purchase and felt like he got good value for what he paid. If this is the case, why should he have a problem disclosing what he paid for the "high country" package? Your suggestion that he make a low-ball disclosure to avoid criticism is especially insulting. Yes, there will be those who will criticize his decision to get the protection package no matter what he paid. But we're all adults here, and anyone who can't deal with criticism or takes it personnaly probably shouldn't be posting in a public forum in the first place.

    Hi all,

I am new to this forum and need some information, guidance, comments. The vehicle I am seriously considering is a 1998 Honda Odyssey LX with 38,544 miles and sticker price of 16,995. It is also Honda Certified. I am seriously considering buying this vehicle. I originally was considering a 1999 Toyota Sienna until I read about the oil sludge problem in their engines. The Sienna was obviously used and I would have no idea if the oil changes were kept up or if Toyota would cover it if the engine sludged up.

I have read thru the different posts on some Odysseys having transmission problems. But since the vehicle is certified and has the 7yr/100,000miles limited powertrain warranty I should be all right if something goes wrong with the transmission.
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Andrew

Here's a link to a used car review on the 95-98 Odyssey that should help. Prices are in Canadian dollars. $17k U.S. sounds a bit high to pay for the one you're looking at although it has quite low mileage and sounds like it comes with an extended warranty. Keep in mind the 98 Ody is completely different than the 99-02 models and has a 4 cylinder engine, so also has a different transmission. In the review below they gave the trany only a C+ rating but don't give any reasons. The trany should have similar reliability to the one in the previous generation 4 cylinder Accord.

I'm going to check out the combo at costco, can you more specific on the base you found at target?
  • 2004runner2004runner Member Posts: 12
Okay, so I spoke too soon. The problem we found with the TV/DVD combo we bought from Costco for our Odyssey is that we didn't think there would be 1) such a glare factor 2) I had to take out the extension in the flip down cup holder - we really like the tray and 3) the tv shuts down entirely with no memory of where the DVD left off when you turn the car off and 4) It's not that easy to see from all angles. So I returned the TV/DVD and we purchased a Panasonic flip down type of TV with a Blaupunkt DVD from Fry's (ugh - that place needs a lesson in customer service! - but they are cheap (apparently for a reason)). This system works terrific. Our newest problem is the TV reception stinks. Does anyone know of a good mobile tv antenna that doesn't look like an appendage on a car (meaning it's fairly invisible)?
  • skubesskubes Member Posts: 19
Our 99 LX received in Dec 1998 required a new transmission last month at 55,000 miles. It was a very sudden thing. Had no extended warranty. Honda ended up going 80%/20% for us, costing us $1100. Others haven't fared so well on coverage out of warranty. Extended warranty would have paid for itself on just this one repair. Wish we had it for the remaining time till we hit 70,000 miles. Van is great for travel and hauling home 32 inch TV's!

I have 33,000 miles on my 2001 Ody EX and I drive a lot on the highway and the road noise is just annoying and excessive (especially on concrete roads) I am looking to replace the tire with less noisy ones. If anyone has a suggestions on which ones to get that are much less noisy I will appreciate it.

An alternative to HandA Accessories is www.hondapartsforyou.com. We recently ordered the rear well cargo mat for less than $60 with free shipping, Honda list $99. Arrived in less than a week. I called the 800 number the day after placing my order online, an actual human being picked up and confirmed my order. This part was also listed as on back order at other web sites.

Great site. Thanks for sharing it with us. I have placed an order on my new Ody.
