I hope you don't get involved with one of those $4000 transmission replacements or a $ 500. dollar electric door motor replacement. Extended warranty's is like life insurance. You hope you never need use it but if you must. A friend of mine just got his Accord out of the shop at a tune of $889.00 for some A/C repairs.

I never buy the extd warranties but I have heard of some people getting them for around $800-900 for the 7year 100k mile plan, that seems pretty good if they list for $1995 but you can get them for $900??. I plan on keeping my ODY for a long time and the 3yr/36k mi std warranty is pretty weak and will runout while I own it I am sure. Any comments or experiences with buying or not buying the extd plan??

As I have posted here before, while extended warranties on most products are not a good deal, I think for an auto they are because.

    1. When the dealer says you need a repair you don't need to get a second opinion. You just get it repaired. It also comes with a free rental auto, while your auto is being repaired if left overnight or longer.

    2. It is a low cost insurance policy, which pretty well tells you what you auto repair costs will be during the period. We get it for a fraction of the cost that a lot of others do because we know where to get it at the lowest cost.

    3. It comes with free road side service.

The Honda Care warranty is the most comprehensive plan I know of and the one I recommend. Unlike most other plans it says what is not covered and then everything else is covered. Most of the others say just what is covered and leave it for you to try and figure out what they left out.

It says Honda Care on it. Many dealers will try and sell you some other plan, as they make more profit on it. Some will even tell you the plan they are selling you is the Honda Care, when it is not.

The one I bought for my 2000 Odyssey EX was the 7yr/100k mile/0 ded. As I understand it from the posts on this board they are selling at discount for about $900.

I never ever bought an extended warranty on any vehicle that I purchased and believe me I bought a few as I am 60 years young. I just purchases a 2002 Oddy EX and also purchased the Extended Warranty for $820.00. I did this after pricing parts and typical labor cost. Lets face it. These vehicles are high tech. and are getting extremely difficult to work on. I don't even do my own brake work anymore.

    liebesi:
Havasu Blue looks light blue in the 2002 brochure. Expect longer wait period for any new color. I am not impressed by the look of the picture. I much prefer the navy blue Honda discontinued after 2000.

    mfeldman:
From what I have read here, your best bet for below MSRP and no wait used to be an LX. But now with EX-L trim, some reports of EX no leather going under MSRP have floated around Edmunds. Which trim are you interested in?

I heard there maybe a Sales Tax Holiday coming soon?? If you buy a new car on that day then you will not have to pay sales tax! I am not sure if this is a National event or a State event (I live in MO and it was heard on the radio). There was a day like that last year I believe as well. has anyone heard of this day and when it may be??

...would most likely be a state thing. They talked about doing here in MA last fall but the legislature never went for it.

If the economy is in real sad shape out there, they might do it. But I always hold doubts when there is state revenue involved.

Sales Tax holiday will be April 1.

Our comes every Feb 30, just like clockwork....

Texas and Iowa actually have (had?) these in recent years.

"Folks in Boise just drive to Oregon to avoid the 5%."

In IL, when you go to register a new vehicle purchased out of state, you must pay your local tax rate in addition to registration fees. If you also paid tax in the other state, you only pay the difference...

Cars are different - they get you when you title it. I was a new resident with a car older than 3 months when I moved here, so snuck in with my (tax free) van purchased in AK.

The Wal-Mart across the border does a booming business though, from what I understand.

I know gas stations in NW Indiana get lots of business from IL customers who live/work near the border...25 cents a gallon difference or something like that.

Sorry I misunderstood your previous post, you didn't say cars but I had assumed you did.

Looking to replace original tires on 1999 Odyssey. Considering Goodyear Aquatred 3($85), Goodyear Regatto 2($80), or Goddyear Allegra(only at Sam's Club $65). Would appreciate any opinions. Thanks!

We have had Sales Tax Holiday the last two years and it only applies to a very narrow range of stuff. Cars are definitely not covered in the exemption list.

I heard through someone that some U.S residents bought their Honda Odyssey (EX leather + entertainment) in Canada for ($39,100 Canadian = $24,840 US)i. e. about $5,000 US cheaper than the MSRP in the United States.

Has anyone got any experience with this ? Is it possible to legally do this ? Any Advice ?

    Thanks in advance.

I replaced the crummy Firestone Affinity tires on my 2000 LX at about 30000 miles. I bought the Aquatreads from Tirerack.com and would recommend both the tires and Tirerack. Their website has a ton of reviews on different tires from their customers and I found it to be very helpful. Their prices are VERY competitive and you can have them drop shipped to a tire store near you for installation. I have bought two sets of tires from Tirerack and saved a bunch of money (between 15-30 per tire w/shipping and installation included). I even asked the local Goodyear dealer to come close and I would buy them from him but he wouldn't come down. The aquatreads are not much quieter than the Firestones were but they handle well and they are holding up much better than the Firestones did.

Has been discussed quite a few times. Essentially, a Canadian market unit registered in the US without first being registered in Canada is a gray market vehicle in Honda's eyes and you will not have a factory warranty. Also, speedo and odometer are metric (can be changed) and temp readout in EX is celcius (not easy to change).

Do a search for "buy in canada" - there's a whole forum devoted to this.

There are many brokers who are buying them in Canada and reselling them in the US with an aftermarket warranty but the pricing is no bargain.
  • billg7billg7 Member Posts: 342
Interesting information. Yes it has been discussed many times about the warranty not being any good.

I would want the speedometer and odometer to register in US units as it would be a real problem otherwise. However the temperature gauge should not matter. Hardly no one looks at the actual temperature anyway. You want to look at how close it is to the danger area on the gauge which should be clearly marked.

As to the warranty I would want an after market warranty which says like the Honda Care Warranty does what is not covered and then everything else is covered. Also I would want it from a company I could trust to stay in business or from one of the states that requires a backup company if it does go out of business.

But it looks like from your research that by the time you add on the US dealer markup and warranty cost it is not a good deal.

I got my 1987 Mazda 626 for a great price. The sales manager then talked me into a long term warranty, which I soon began to regret. When I talked to the lady at the credit union from where I got the car loan, though, she said, "Look, you're a single woman with not a lot of money in the bank. Can you afford to pay for a major repair?" The answer, or course, was no. I then spoke to my friend who was married to a mechanic. He had advised her to buy the extended warranty for her new vehicle before they were married. This made me feel better. Then, right after the regular warranty on the car expired, I had to have over $1500 of work done on the car. The extended warranty covered it all.

We replaced the Mazda with a 2002 Ody EX-L in November. We did buy the 7yr/100,000mi/$0 for $875. I'm no longer single and could probably afford some major repairs, but I can't think of many on this vehicle that would cost less than the cost of the warranty. It is insurance, and if you can get it at a good price, I think it's worth it.
  • tj_610tj_610 Member Posts: 132
This is a completely personal decision. Many folks have stories about costly repairs covered by warranty. People who bought it and never used it will say the security was worth the money. But you must believe that the warranty is priced to make a profit over the long run. Honda knows that, while some individuals may need pricey repairs, 100 warranty purchasers will not require $90,000 in repairs in 7 years. As long as you realize that, then do what makes you feel better.

BTW if I require a big repair after the standard warranty expires, I promise to post it here and you can all laugh at me!
  • soberssobers Member Posts: 496
Same math goes for insuarnce. I have NEVER used car insurance but do you need it. YES. NOW, the "risk" is totally different wrt driving & car purchase. You can buy warranty after original warranty expires. It would be a bit expensive than upfront though. But you get the picture how vehicle is holding up in first 3 years etc

IN my opinion Honda/Toyotas & a few Nissan models should be ok without extended warranty. Manufacturing Problems should be taken care of in first 3 years.

Find a dealer that sells it for $900. Go back through this topic and you'll find names and contact information for dealers that don't gouge on the Honda Care warranty.
  • tj_610tj_610 Member Posts: 132
Yes, I agree, it is exactly like insurance. The difference is, car insurance is legally required, and a car accident can financially (not to mention physically) devastate you. Same for homeowner's insurance. If the unlikely event of a $3000 repair in 5 years would ruin your finances more than a certain event of $900 spent now, then go ahead and get the warranty. I've used this analogy before, I'll use it again: Medical insurance? Definitely. Medical bills can wipe you out. Dental insurance? Not if you don't need braces. GM extended warranty? Sure! Honda? I like my chances without it.

I am one of those guys that said I WILL NEVER OWN A MINIVAN. Well, never say never. I am now looking at buying a 2002 Honda Odyssey EX-L within the next month. One of the things that I have gotten a concession on is upgrading the rims and tires. I want to go to 18 inch rims with tire that have a 40mm profile. Standard width is 225mm.

My question is what is the max tire width that I can put on the vehicle without rubbing the wheelwells or inducing steering problems? I have looked at various websites and even called Honda. Honda holds the party line of 225 and no one else has responded.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Ok!! Now that I own a 2002 Ody and I think its a great van, there is one thing that is not so great. CUP HOLDERS!!!!. There are lots of them 11 in all. The problem being they hold only cups and not bottles. Does anyone know of any inserts to hold many sizes of bottles or cups.? WalMart had one a few years back that Ody owners were buying. I think they are called the Wizards. Any one else find anything?
  • billg7billg7 Member Posts: 342
I would say the best reason to get an extended warranty is if the dealer tells you you need a repair, you don't have to get a second opinion, which will cost you, or wonder if you are getting taken. You just tell him to go ahead and make the repair.

On my car before this one, 2000 Odyssey EX, the dealer told me I needed a transmission, the compressor for the A/C was bad, had a blown head gasket and some other repairs. I never noticed anything wrong with my car but I let him make the repairs and was given a loaner car in the mean time. I do know since the second transmission did go out after 100k miles after that, that I would have had to replace it my self. Instead, it was time, by that time, to get a new car.

Also we get the insurance very cheap when we pay about 1/2 what others pay for the warranty.

So it is not the cost of the repairs so much I am getting the insurance for. It is the peace of mind it gives me.

I am guessing that the total profit on average on a 7/100/0 warranty is about $200, for one purchased at $900, or about $50/yr for that piece of mind. To me it is worth it.

I should be taking receipt of my new 2002 ody LX next week and because of the many good people writing into this board, I was able to get the dealer to agree to $865 for the 7 year/100 mile/$0 deductible extended warranty. According to him, this was only a $40 profit for him. However, the more that I think about it, the more I think I should buy the 7/75/0 instead of the 7/100/0 warranty. I just don't drive that many miles.

I have read many, many postings about the 7/100/0 extended warranty, but have not seen anything about the 7/75/0 extended warranty. Does anyone know the dealers cost for the 7/75/0? Thanks

We have shopped and compared vans for the last 2 months and have decided to buy an Odyssey EX. The only problem being I would really like to know what the colors and changes will be on the 2003 vehicle so I can make an informed decision on buying a 2002 or waiting until the 2003 come out. When will this be available or is it already?
  • rockycowrockycow Member Posts: 114
I don't know dealer invoice on the 7/75 for the Ody but Tracy McCrystal at 800-264-3275 charges $655. She charges $875 for the 7/100/0.

I thought of another reason to buy a Honda Care extended warranty. The warrant is transferable to the person you sell the car to as long as the person is a private party and not the dealer.

This should allow you to get more for your vehicle, if you sell it. A big problem when you buy a vehicle from a private party is you don't know the condition and usually get no kind of a warranty.

Does anyone know anything about this? I would like to see an Acura version of Ody. As much as I like my Ody, I wish mine is more like a MDX in terms of the bells and whistles. I spend so much time in my van that I really wish there is a luxo version of Ody, so I can tolerate better all the driving I have to do with screaming kids.
  • stacystacy Member Posts: 91
What brands are the standard tires for the Ody EX? Which are the best of the choices? If I got 17" or 18" tires would I need new rims? Would the ride be any smoother, give me more traction? Thanks.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
The tires are 16" either Bridgestone or Michelin.

Yes you will need new rims if you decided to +1 or +2.

Thanks to all the regulars on this forum. I have learned a lot and feel I have enough information to decide that the Odyssey is the right vehicle for my family. Anyway, I am looking to purchase an EX in September/October. Has anyone purchased in central/northern New Jersey? If so, where and how long did you have to wait? Thanks for your help.

Have you seen the '02 Odyssey? It offers optional heated leather seats, DVD player, or navigation system.

What else would you be looking for?
  • mommyof4mommyof4 Member Posts: 46
Yes, I know about the '02 version and mine is '01. I sat in a '02 MDX the other day and I like the seats much better than the ones I have now. MDX has a lot of finer touches that Ody does not have. My Ody is already equipped with i-VES, leather (after market), and other odds and ends. But, it still not quite at the level I'd like to have.
  • dave210dave210 Member Posts: 242
I know what you mean. I have wished there was an Acura version since the new Odyssey was introduced. Since I wanted a real luxury van, I eneded up with a Town and Country Limited, but my next car will probably be an MDX. Some things the Odyssey could get if an Acura version came out is:

    1: Memory seats and mirrors
    2: Power passenger seat
    3: Trip computer
    4: Compass and temperature readout
    5: Factory fog lights
6: Upgraded interior with wood trim, etc.
    7: CD changer
    8: Sun roof

    Just a thought...

The '04 catalog-brochure states that both the LX and EX have privacy glass, but only the EX has heat resistant glass.

What exactly is the difference? My previous minivan--a '95 Windstar--had tinted glass on all but the front windows. I don't recall (and may not have ever known) if that glass was heat resistant.

I'm guessing that the privacy glass is tinting and that the heat resistant glass is some kind of darker tint...
  • mommyof4mommyof4 Member Posts: 46
I agree with you!! Whenever my husband drives my car, he changes everything; it takes me a long time to get everything changed back. The passenger seat is just not as comfortable as the one in MDX; it's really annoying at times when I have to sit there. I'd rather have an Acura version than a T&C Ltd any day. But, until the MEN of Honda/Acura finally understand what mommies want, I will have to live with my Ody.
  • mommyof4mommyof4 Member Posts: 46
You've made a good point. Honda is making Pilot/MDX out of the same shell. So, why not the Odyssey? Just a few years ago, SUVs are just SUVs, not luxury SUVs such as MDX. If automakers can upgrade a SUV, I don't see why not upgrading a minivan. I'd bet you that many of us mommies would really look at one before even considering buying a SUV.

Ok all you 99 thru 02 Ody owners. I can't believe you are all satified with the factory cup holders. Has anyone out there done anything to improve this issue.
  • tj_610tj_610 Member Posts: 132
Yes, I have stopped drinking and driving. It interferes with my cell phone conversation too much. :-)

Actually, I do wish the holders were a little deeper. But, hey, it's a minivan. I'm not whipping around corners.

    Hey!

I bought my 02 Ody LX at Route 23 Honda in Pompton Plains, NJ. They quoted 3 months but delivery was much faster. Funny - I wasn't in a hurry but they make their effort to move quickly. In and out no problem. Let them know staight up I was not interested in add ons, etc and they did not pressure. Ask for Andre - nice young fellow. Tell him I sent you - won't make a bit of difference....

Cupholders - yeah, the ones on the little table are really annoying. In fact, they are my single biggest complaint on the vehicle which I guess means I should be happy indeed. I like to keep a big water bottle in the car when I drive. In my Accord the console cup holder holds in just fine. No good place in the Ody. I'll live.

Oh, I'm one of those sorts that can eat soup and talk on a cell phone while shifting gears on a stick..... Don't suppose I would really recommend trying that.

BTW, the Ody, which I've had since October just passed 7,500 miles and all is well. Wish the CD upgrade was cheaper - ditto putting in a remote entry. We'll see. Right now I put a disc man on the little table and use one of those adaptor things with the cassete player. Works fine.

Here is the one thing that did happen - got a monster shot from a stone kicked up on the road. Didn't repair the little star mark right away. Big mistake - a crack developed and am now replacing the windshield. Oy! Trust me - that one ain't under warranty. $290. Oh, well.

I've decided to purchase a Honda Odyssey EX and checked the Tre Market Value at Edmunds.com and the TMV is over $1,000 OVER MSRP. Is this correct? Are people generally paying more than MSRP for this vehicle?

My goof - the Ody is at 10,000 - still not up to your standards but much better.....

Now I've known you to show an unnatural interest in these Odys for someone who apparently doesn't now and never has owned one.....
