Like I said, it could be something as simple as a cracked hose, or the charcoal canister and purge system as a whole. That is like anywhere from $20 to $500!

Off topic for a second here, but that means the Entourage is back on my list... (if Navigation is available)
As far as gas mileage is concerned, the car gets about 18 MPG with my wife driving it mostly city. We have seen low 20's when driving mostly highway (rated 20/28). As a comparison, my BMW 530 gets about 24-25 MPG combined (rated at 21/30) and I have seen over 30 MPG on long highway trips.
Granted the 05 is first year, however we have had more problems (fortunately relatively minor ones) than the 4+ years with my BMW (which had no probems). On the good side, I favor driving the Odessey over the BMW whenever my wife and kids are with me, just more room and easier access. Plus, my wife does not like me driving the BMW like it should be driven.

perhaps the owner with the door problem might want to search the forum for the door relearn procedure and try it: messages 2648 and 3128 specifically.
We have had our Odyssey for three years now and absolutely LOVE it!! We have owned several Honda's for years and they are amazingly reliable vehicles (especially compared to BMW and Land Rover we had in the past). For the first time this summer, I've noticed that the A/C system (usually very strong) was not cooling off the cabin as fast as usual. It didn't feel like it was blowing air as cold as it should, and certainly not as cold as our new Accord. Now that the cold weather has arrived, I'm having a hard time defogging the windshield. All the settings are normal (Auto - windshield defog with A/C) and the system is blowing strong, but I guess not blowing any dry air. The problem must be the same or related to the one encountered over the summer.
I do all the general maintenance on my cars myself so, before I bring it to a mechanic, I'm wondering if there is anything I can check (i.e. refrigerant level/pressure) and possibly fix myself.
After all it's a HONDA, so it should be a pretty simple fix.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
My dealer in SE PA wants $1600.
I am getting my '00 Ody done for $550 at a local repair shop.
While I was driving a buzzing sound (similar to a warning buzzer)started from what sounded like the left rear speaker on my Oddy 2000ex. I pulled to check it and when I put it in park the sound stopped. The sound began again when I put it back in drive. The sound is a continuous sound unlike the sliding door-open warning light and is only on when in reverse or drive.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

Would like to know if others are experiencing this as well???
Meanwhile, three new issues:
1. Check Engine light came on
2. TCS light is now on (even if I try to turn the light off by pushing the TCS button, the light won't go away)
3. On the gearshift selector in the instrument panel, the D spot flashes green constantly, whether I shift it into drive or not.
Any insights into the source (or sources) of the new issues?
Transmissions don't die after 13,000 miles, do they?
(Almost 83K now)
I hope its either something REALLY minor (cheap fix) or something REALLY major (just give up and get something new) What'd be the worst case scenario would be something right in the middle- a big hit to the checking account, but not big enough to justify a new van.
No glass is perfect, so it becomes a matter of whether you can live with it or not.
Fortunately, my '02 is relatively OK, with small ripples in spots I rarely need to see thru. Push back hard if it is an issue of your safety and comfort.

Local dealership is working on putting in a new transmission, free of charge, under the 100K warranty.
They say its the source for the gasoline smell, and all the lights that lit up yesterday.
Thanks for your help everyone
My wife said it was the transmission, but it was something minor.
A wire that was chewed up by a squirrel.
Well, at least problem's solved now.
I'm new to the forum and I have some concerns that I hope I get some understading..I used to own a 2001 EX Ody (which I loved very much) and I just traded it in for a 2006 EX Ody end of September..I had it services twice due to the Engine wouldn't start. Honda reprogrammed my key cause they thought it was the immobolizer..Just last night when we were on the Freeway the car Shut Down on us..I was terrified!!! Currently the car is in the dealer for them to fix the problem..My concern is after the problem is fixed will I encounter this problem again??? I drive this car daily with my children and I am scared now to drive it again..any advice??
There appears to be heavy rubbing on the spindles below the pads, maybe the pads are expanding with heat buildup and the noise is coming from them rubbing against the spindle itself... who knows
Paul
I hope your problem is as simple as mine was - certainly worth checking before you spend big $$ on service (i.e. I hope you trust your dealer who could otherwise charge a lot for such a simple fix).
Good luck!
What is the long term reliability of this vehicle such as at 150k miles and out.
Thanks,
Neal
Realize that we come to boards like this to grouse. I am on my second tranny (replaced at 34k on my '02 EX), yet at slightly over 50k miles, I would still recommend my Honda to a friend. In total, this vehicle has been far less problematic than any of my previous 9 new car purchases (including 3 Toyota's). Now I may change my opinion tomorrow should my fortune suddenly change, but overall, I think it stacks up well compared to the competition, which justifies the price.
Make sure that any '02 /'03 that you are considering have been inspected for the tranny recall, and have either had the unit replaced, or the 2nd gear fluid flow fix installed.
Steve
After following many forums for many years, I understand how this works. While reading these forums and hearing everybody complaining (happy customers don't have any reason to complain) I asked the question to get "perspective" on the issue.
Unfortunately, I own an expensive washing machine that had several design flaws. There are about 6 known defects and in that case if you hadn't had the failure yet, it was only a matter of time before you experienced them (all of them).
I was just trying to judge where on the scale these tranny problems fell. 10% failure or 90%.
Thanks for the information on what to ask about on the transmission. That really helps.
Neal
it's reasonable to expect a MPG improvement as the engine breaks in. i noticed this effect with my 2003.
be easy on the throttle. check your tire inflation pressure.
fill up. go on a long hwy ride at near constant speed 55-60. zero your trip odometer. fill up again and divide miles driven into gallons pumped.
try the same experiment at 5K miles.
I've had this a few times on some of my cars usually it's a bad connection/bad battery/bad alternator. I would document all service done at some point enough is enough. But at this time a new car is a little premature. Give em a chance and if they don't do well give em hell.
it is a device that maintains electrical continuity between steering-wheel controls and devices (cruise, horn, ABS, radio) and the wiring harness connecting to the rest of the auto's electronics. the device maintains this continuity in the circuits to these devices as the steering-wheel is rotated from one extent to the other.
it's possible that the issue is just with the radio switches.
if however your radio is not the original model, then that is probably your issue as the controls probably only work with certain honda radios.
hope it helps.
Congratulations: you have a keeper. I thought that Honda only has problem with 5 speed Automatic Transmission and I wonder if the MY 2000 has the 4 speed or the 5 speed version. Honda did switch from 4 speed to 5 speed along with bumping up the Horse Power on the 3.5L V6 to 240 HP at that time. If your vehicle has 215 HP, it is likely you have the 4 speed. Another thing, not every 5 speed AT vehicle will fail. Someone mentiones that it is 1 out of 1000 vehicles would have the problem (But in Automotive quality standard, 1000 ppm is still very high. Typically, they want single ppm failure rate)

We have had our 05 EX-L for a year now. For around town driving (slow speed, stop and go), we typically average 14 MPG. For HWY speed, if we keep vehicle speed about 60 MPH, we can get close to 25MPG. As soon as we do 75-80, the fuel efficciency would drop to about 21-22 MPG. The numbers are compatible to any vehicle with 4300 lbs mass (minivan or SUV). The Honda VCM (3 cylinder shut off) probably saves about 10% overall (2-3 extra miles for gallon).
I doubt that one can get close to the city EPA number unless he drives the same speed and road traffic exactly like in the EPA test. The same for HWY mileage. But it is easier to get close to EPA HWY number than the city one.
May be we all need to learn to drive the way EPA tests vehicles to save gas (50MPH on Interstate for example). We may get shot at by those BMW or RAM pickup drivers waiting to pass us.

Basically I'd stick to the ones they made in Lincoln, Alabama, after the first 2 months or so of production.
I think it'll make it to 150K, but not far after that.
Just know ALL makes have their problems and similar complaints.
Just that your chances of getting problems are lower in a Honda/Toyota than something less reliable.
