Alright how about this . 6 years ago gas was 80cents. Minimum wage I believe was 5.45 an hour. Today gas is 3$ or over . Minimum wage is only 6.35 an hour .
Wages are simply not increasing at the same rate as gas prices.
Can you imagine if in the next 6 years Milk went from 1.25$ a gallon to 3$ a gallon ? You'd see the use of milk drop everywhere. People would start drinking black coffee and many industrys and busniesses would go out of busniess and cause a depresion
You are very smart....but insist on ignoring the evidence.
Your blaming the consumers. However cars are needed by many in this country.
We only have the options that the car companys give us . I'm looking to spend 18-25k on a vechical . I'm looking at suvs because aside from my day job , I also help maintain a few of my uncles apartment buildings in jersey city , so alot of times I have tons of tools and equipment in my car most of the time it wont fit in a sedan .
So what are my options ? Every suv in my price range runs on normal gas . Only 2 are hybrid yet that feature pushes the price out of my price range .
But you claim its our fault ? If Jeep made the patriot or liberty in a 2007 model with diesel I would buy it . If they made one of the two in a e85 format I would buy it. If they made a hybrid version , I would buy it.
However these are options not avalible to me .
As it is anything I can walk to in a reasonable amount of time , I walk to.
If on my way to work , I can hit up the bank atm , dry cleaners and comic shop , i will do so .
However this wont make the prices go down. This wont make jeep put out a diesel in every price range or a hybrid . Or make GM do the same in thier fleets of cars.
Its the car producers that control the main problem with our gas consumption.
Short trips will only reduce consumption so much and if everyone does it , i'm sure it would be sizable. But not as sizable if for 2007 every company produces a hybrid in every price catagory or diesel or flexfuel .
That is the way we reduce consumption , by reducing the amount our vehicals consume , we can then reduce the amount we use .
Some people simply use the gas they have to. I know I haven't gone joy riding in almost 4 years .
Thats cute , what are you 8 ?
There are a lot of costs that are increasing faster than inflation. Health care and drug costs come to mind. At least with gas there are actions you can take to mitigate the increasing costs. BTW, where can you get milk for $1.25/gallon.
Sitting at $2.95 for 87 in State College, PA
Its always someone else's fault. Explain how it is in the auto manufacturer's interest to deny the consumer more fuel efficient vehicles? When gas was relatively cheap, fuel efficiency was a lower priority in the buying decision than size and power. Manufacturers produced the vehicles that the consumer wanted. The consumer is responsible for the composition of the current fleet of vehicles on the roadways today.
As far as your lifestyle dictating that you have a truck, how about this. I guarantee there are a lot of good deals on used trucks/SUVs right now. I'm pretty sure that for the 18-25k you were planning on spending on a new truck you could get a used truck and a used economy car. Maybe that doesn't fit your style but unfortunately style is a luxury, not a necessity, and comes with a price.
Can't compare the prices without removing the tax amount from them. If a country has $15 per gallon tax are you going to say that we're lucky because their price is $17 per gallon?
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Executive compensation has gone ballistic in this country because of lack of controls. Compare it to other countries.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Highender,
I think Castro is taking that out of our playbook. He is looking into drilling 45 miles off the Florida coast. We have not allowed drilling within 150 miles of that sacred spit of land. There are known large reserves out there. Cuba needs oil worse than we do. Will be interesting to see an old rusted out drilling platform in sight of Key West. They can just pop a hole in the ground and skim the oil off the surface of the ocean. :shades:
I have not seen exploration in the Arctic as frantic as this last winter. BP & Conoco could have used 16 additional drill rigs. They just are not available.
And what might that be? They also pay 50% or there abouts in income tax, at least my uncle and aunt did. Canada is oil independent and have been, yet their citizens pay a lot more for gas. Hmmm, just have to wonder what they get for all those taxes that is so great. I know my cousins moved to the USA and were tickled to become US citizens.
Really ? after Katrina my prices here hit 2.45 . Its not up to 2.93 (some places around here higher) Seems like its going up quickly to me . Not down
As for milk , I got a gallon of it yesterday .
I don't know if thats because there is milk thing by a town away from us (I don't know what it does , perhaps a bottler ? )
Nobody slowing down on the highways like I noticed during Katrina. Seems we're all getting used to the pain.
Let's stick to gas prices here please.
me: yes we hardly ever let up off the gas pedal (usage) in this country, until prices rise and cause some pain. But at the same time by sending our money overseas with our excessive buying of Chinese (and other countries) goods, we are pressing a 2nd gas-pedal to the floor. And there's 1 tank, and now the fuel-line is feeding another engine.

Now this topic can cease to exist.
me: Why would you spend $18K - $25K on an SUV or such if $3/gal. gas is going to be a problem for you? Why don't you even consider a used vehicle? What about a used 6-cyl. van for $5K? You'd have plenty of money for gas, with the low payment, insurance and taxes.
From what you're reading here why make the mistake of instant gratification that stretches your budget?
Regular = $3.01
Silver = $3.05
"premium?" 91? (Heck the only thing "premium" about it is the price for this watered-down slop) = $3.10
"ultra?"93 = $3.19
On Monday night my girlfriend needed to fill-up her LaCrosse. She foolishly let it get down to 1/4 only to find out the station had nothing left but "ultra?" @ $3.15. It cost her $35.15 to fill the car. She was upset and I just kept my mouth shut.
For 87:
$2.83 at Kangaroo
$2.85 at BP and Chevron, both next to the Kangaroo.
$2.86 at Exxon near me
$2.89 at most other places
93 is 20 cents more, and diesel, where offered, is 10 cents less.
All 3 of my vehicles are at 3/4...let's see how long my wife and I can go...
BTW Gas is $2.83 for watered down 86' *burp* :surprise:
Rocky
There are a couple, and I mean that literally in the West Texas panhandle that sell 91'. My FIL puts 90 in his Vette a few times and the car honestly didn't run right and knocked. I don't know how these Gas [non-permissible content removed]'s get away with selling these octane levels. You would think the so-called free-market would atleast get us 93' watered down octane  Atleast you can get Ultra 94' :P 91' is a delicacy for my cars and luckily we do have one station here in Dumas, a Conoco Phillips station that serves 91'. You have drive about 3 hours east or west to find anything over 91'.

Gagrice: although I don't always agree with your politics, your insight and knowledge of the oil industry is a big plus for this forum.
Highender: your ability to write (and write and write) amazes me!
I don't really like SUVs either and see them mostly as "look at me" purchases, but I see solo drivers in all kinds of vehicles and many of them driven irresponsibly. I suppose, however, the larger a vehicle, the more likely it's going to get your attention when the driver behaves like an idiot -- think especially reckless tractor-trailer drivers.
This business about debt -- sure some people are up to their eyeballs for all the wrong reasons, but don't forget that just by having two children in college at the same time (like I did), it can be hard not having to borrow to stay afloat. I didn't do it at 18% though, and we did take maximum advantage of student loans.
I've about had it with this "I gotta be bigger, stronger, richer, better (than you) mentality." Starting a small business is easier said than done, you need money (and lots of it) to invest (and risk losing it). At my age, I wouldn't want to risk my 403 (b) (nonprofit version on a 401 (k)) on starting a business.
I've also had it with this business about riding around on mopeds. Our suburbs and exurbs weren't designed for mopeds and bicycles. I ride my bike recreationally, and I could easily ride the 13 miles one way to work, which is located in a former pasture out in the countryside, with no public transportation available. But I'd have to use either a 55-mph divided highway with no shoulders on the "old" side of the road OR take the narrow back roads without shoulders or even centerlines. Now if everyone drove courteously and at the speed limit, it might be possible. But given the current realities, I'd be taking my life in my hands.
Moving is out of the question because one of those magazines named our area the "number one place to live or retire to" or some such a few years back, so housing prices have zoomed out of sight. I'd rather sit on my equity and keep my low mortgage balance (and interest rate).
Also nonsense is this idea that the oil companies are gouging us. It's shameful that politicos like Sen. Schumer and Rep. Pelosi are spouting this line. And BTW, my political views are more in line with fintail's and rocky's, so you know where I'm coming from.
On the subject of philantropy, I think it's great that Bill Gates gives so much to charity. That's in the spirit of the great capitalists of the 19th century, like Andrew Carnegie of my home town, Pittsburgh. He built a great library and musuem there, and made it possible for me to attend art classes for free when I was in the late elementary and middle school years. Plus he contributed to library building all over the country -- we saw one in Dodge City, KS of all places -- on our December cross-country trek.
And someone who shall go unnamed really ought to use the spell-checker and cut down on the use of the emoticons! You know, these things:
I started to fill up with 85 in Ely, NV, then thought maybe I should stick with the recommended 87, despite the higher altitude.
I think the logic is that because the air is thinner (lower pressure) to begin with, it isn't compressed as much inside the engine's cylinders, so a gasoline's antiknock capability can be reduced -- i.e., lower octane is possible.
Come out and just say it's me. :P
Rocky
BTW- Gas at some pumps here in Dumas is $2.85 a gallon for Water, bugs, sticks, stones, gravel, kerosene, propane, and cheap whiskey that a bum wouldn't drink that they call gas down here.
Rocky
Yes that is correct. Having a heart attack worrying about gas prices (or taxes) won't cost me a dime
Rocky
I know my own tricks is to buy gas faster and easier. So, when you go to the gas stations, Use your credit card and fill up the gas and stop at $10.00 only! When you finished that, go to the other gas station and this time don't use credit card! you will pay with cash! fill up the gas and stop at $5.00 only and that's it! The total will be $15.00 and that is cheap and that will save you from paying over $20.00, $25.00, $30.00 and so on. Now you see what I'm talking about? This is what I do and it's faster and easier.
have a good day!
What in the hell is he saying. I got a headache, trying to decipher that post.
He must either work for Bush or he just crossed the border

Your posts are nice and lucid...very diplomatic and touch on the real needs of this country and all Americans.
YOu are right... I see your need for a vehicle...but there are few good choices out there...and moped is not an option, if you have to help fix up property . You need lots of room.
All I can say is that we all need to conserve. There are many ways. Some, like what you touched on, involve paying higher prices for a vehicle just to save gas. LIke paying to save....?!
I wish we consumers pushed for real reform....and stopped our gas habits long ago.
My dad has a rental property. HE does not own a car. He just takes the bus to go collect rent. IF there is a problem...he calls the handyman. Of course, not all people can do that....but HE can.
All I am saying is that it is easy to play the blame game....yet the real addiction to gas is our fault. OK....maybe I will speak for myself....MY fault.
No one forced me to buy a SUV. NO one forced me at gun point to drive to work. No one kidnapped my family to make me fill up my gas tank.
I hope we all reflect on this next time we are at the GAs Pump......

P.S.
So these idiots get away with giving me watered dowm slop 86 octane they call gas because of my altitude. 85 octane would freeze an engine and I probably couldn't use it to light my charcoal in my grill on fire, let-alone burn it in my car.
