Hey Ron, I was just wondering about you. Havn't seen you lately. I still have the overload spring stops turned up. They are working out good that way, they just come into play when I hit a big bump or dip while towing the trailer. Looks like the trucks are starting to come in, your's can't be far behind.
Gene7722, there is some suit deposits that get on the truck, but its not bad. I have a white truck and you can't see it unless you wipe your finger across it.
I put 150 miles on my RAM 3500 yesterday, and you are right about the new 24v Cummins Turbo Diesel. It is incredible! I drove from Alamogordo to Cloudcroft, New Mexico, an ascent of about 1 mile, and the only reason I had to down-shift from 5th gear was the 30 mph curves along the way. This is the only vehicle I have ever driven that mountain in that could easily accelerate in high gear. Although the suspension is stiff on this 1 ton, it give a much smoother ride over rough roads than my old GMC 1 ton did.
I like the sound of the diesel, and found myself turning the radio down a few times just so I could hear that gutteral purr!
I know the long wait is painful, but hang in there - it is like a dream come true when that new truck finally arrives!
Congratulations, Pete38, on your new truck! Gotta go drive mine now. Y'all keep in touch!
We picked up our new Ram 2500HD Quad with 24v Cummins Turbo Diesel 3/25 only to have it quit on us during vacation in Las Vegas. And of course it stopped right in the middle of the strip. It has been at the dealer's service dept since 4/22 & they are all trying to determine the problem. After replacing the crank sensor & ECM, they have now decided to fly in a Zone Tech on Monday to try to figure this out. Cummins has been great after I emailed them & are getting involved.Needless to say, we are really disappointed after finally getting our "dream truck". After reading the posts here it doesn't sound like anyone else with the 24v is having any problems. Ours was great until we hit about 1700 miles. Been trying to get with other 24v owners to find out if anyone else has had a problem.
i now own a 97 dodge 1500, 5.9 extended cab, shortbed. also have 28' 5th wheel camper (GVWR 7700lbs)with no slides. this truck pulls fine down here along the flat lands of south, but i'm afraid it may have its troubles on steeper northern hills and the gas miliage is not great. looking into buying a 3/4 ton diesel with long bed. i would much prefer the dodge over the ford. how does the dodge's 6 cyl diesel compare to the fords 8 cyl powerstroke? when it comes to these two deisels, does two more cyl make that big a difference? i want to get a bigger camper soon. probably not bigger than a 30 footer, but will have slide outs that will make it weight around 10,000 lbs. will a dodge diesel 2500 quad cab longbed with four tires vs six do the trick? by the way, i'm new at this conference stuff, so i'v been real interested in reading all that you folks had to say and i'm lokking for your valued opinions. thanks!
atcsc, The tow diesels are pretty equal in power and performance over all, and both are very reliable engins. As far as the number of wheels, 4 is all you need a 5th wheel. With the diesel engine you will never again have to worry about where you can tow your 5th wheel, it will go anywhere you want to go, and on 50% less fuel. You do get a few dirty looks from people in campgrounds though, but just wave and they will wave back. If you like the Dodge better then thats the truck for you....Good luck, and see you in the mountians.
Anyone changed the oil in their 24V yet? How about that filter placement? Took me a while to figure out a way to get it off. I took a standard filter wrench, and removed the pin on one side of the handle and, slid the band around the filter and put the pin back in. I also removed the hose that goes from the air cleaner to the turbo to get more room. The Mopar filter looked better constructed than the Fram filter I put on. I may get one from Dodge next time, if I can't find out who makes theirs.
mharde2: thanks for responding so quickly. how about transmissions? i talked to a guy at a campground last week that has a 98 dodge cummins with a standard. says thats the way to go. but i don't cherish the fact of shifting all the time. maybe thats ok if i were a full-time camper and on the highway alot. but i'm not and i do mostly city driving. does the extra horsepower that comes with a standard really make a difference? also, i know the new ford superduties recommend driving in overdrive pulling a camper. how about dodge? can i drive a dodge cummins in overdrive while pulling? i saw a couple of these conference responces saying that third gear is noisy. one other thing. what rear end gear would be the best way to go?
I'm wondering if anybody has a Quad cab that used to own a club cab? Just how much more convient are the extra two doors? Are they worth the $1000? We have a 6 year old son and a 60 lb. dog that will be riding back there most often.
So far I can't think of one negative of the quad. Had an extended cab before and it was ok. Nobody complained but when we took people water skiing they would have to climb over the seat. Quad will be much nicer for company! My son now eight did fine getting in and out of our old one but he keeps getting bigger and I think it would become more of a problem. With the quad no problem and much easier to set some bags of groceries in the back. Remember part of the cost will be recouped when you resell your truck. I have a suspetion that the quads will affect the resell price of the extendeds much like slide outs on trailers have affected the resale price on trailers without the slides.
atcsc, Dodge doesn't recomend towing in O/D with the automatic. Most people I talk to do though, including me. I use 3rd gear going thruogh towns, heavy trafic, or hills where I think it will be shifting in and out of O/D. I would also recomend a transmission temp guage. I havn't installed one yet but I plan to soon. You have plenty of power with the automatic. I got the 3.55 rear end but some times wonder if the 4.10 wouldn't be better. I wish they offered a 3.73, that would about perfect for me. But they don't, so I'm not much help there. It was most likely me complaning about the noise in 3rd, but I think my engine is noisier than most. I don't know why that is, but it sounds much noiser than than the others that I have seen around in campgrounds and on the street. Don't let me worry you though, I'm about the pickiest person in the world.
Anxious to hear on Monday what they find. Hopefully I be getting mine before we go on vacation to the Outer Banks in June and would hate for that problem to happen.
Marvb, Mharde2,
My truck is build and waiting to be shipped, I guess. Its hard to get an exact status from CC. I'm calling every other day now hopeing that will make a difference.
I admire your patients Ron....When you get the call that your truck is in, you better have someone drive you to the dealership. Your going to be one excited dude....
Outerbanks? as in Cape Hatteras? I will be there in June too! After waiting for my quad cab since Feb. 16 Now I'm waiting for the 5th wheel hitch! Maybe we can have a Ram get together there. I will be staying at Hatteras Sands. Then it's down to Disney for me. I know (Disney is expensive) but kids are only kids once. I love my new P/U, 215 miles on it. Spring cleanup is interfering with any long drives right now. I put on some stainless steel nerfs and the mopar contoured mudflaps. Looks really sharp. Nerfs are by Luverne, very sturdy easy install. The mopar nerfs wouldn't let me use the contoured mudflaps. One other thing I added was the mopar strips to cover the paint were the bottom of the door covers it when closed. It looks sharp. Any other ideas to "spruce" the truck up a little more?
June 6-13. We'll be 60 miles north in South Nagshead. We'll probably visit the lighthouse. Are you passing though Pa.?
Are the Mopar plastic strips the rocker panel (door sill) covers? I've got them on my list. Do they cover most of the threshold? I'm also considering the plastic shields above the door windows. You can leave the windows cracked open slightly during the summer and not worry about unannounced rain.
This is my 15th week of waiting, I don't understand why its taking so long.
How big is your 5th wheel? Where are you going to mount the brake controller inside? I understand the Tekonsha Voyager 9030 fits into the ashtray. I'm wondering how that would work.
Hey, I'll also be in South Nagshead the same week. I've only been there once and at that time we had no truck, but this time I'll have my 98 1500 Blue sport 4X4 out on the beach. If you see it come on down and say Hi.
I'm thinking of getting a new 1500 quad cab in the fall with the 5.9 L, automatic. I was wondering if I should get the towing package. I would only be pulling regular sized boats and maybe a small horse trailer. I don't know much about the towing package, so any info would help. Thanks in advance.
606zp, Those are the door sill covers. I like them alot they cover almost all of it with a space were the quad door closes. My 5th wheel is a 26 foot with one slide. I will be in NC June 24. Before that Hagerstown June 18-21, Williamsburg 22,23. We leave Colorado june 13 arrive back home july 13th. Longest trip for me will really like the ride in the new P/U. I hope your truck comes in soon, the wait must be getting REAL old. I could barely stand mine 9weeks 1day 14 hours. Not that I was counting! I know it is too easy for me to say now but it was worth the wait.
606zp, I am going to have the brake installed when my hitch comes in (10 days). I am going to ask about that mounting in the ashtray. I would like that cause I don't use that space except to collect change anyway. That sure would be a popular item for a little kit that would the place of the ash tray. Anybody from dodge listening?
bri, Absolutely do get the tow package...You get the hitch receiver, wiring harness, heavy duty flasher. You will need the heavy duty service group also. That has the transmission cooler, 136-amp alt, and maximum engine cooling. Its worth every penny.
Sorry I'll miss you in O.B., Pete38. You know you're 30 minutes from Gettysburg if you're in Hagerstown. We've camped at Granite Hill lots. Kings Dominion theme park right above Richmond is nice.
Tongos, how about a beer on the beach? We're renting a house right on the beach below Whalehead, right where the bridge goes to Manteo. Look for a amethyst 2500 Cummins reg cab (positive thinking).
Mharde2, How long does it take a slow boat to travel to Mobile, Alabama if it leaves Mexico on April 27 with a amethyst 2500 Cummins reg cab? The hardest part has been learning how to spell "amethyst". I hope I don't have to fill in "color" on a service request card 'cause I doubt most people know what it looks like.
It will take a couple of weeks for the slow boat probably. I will be in Mobile Alabama weekend after next. Well Golf Shores State Park actually. Just south of Mobile. If I see a purple truck coming of a boat, I will hold it until you get there. I bet you could get there pretty quick. Did you get the camel leather enterior with that? I bet that will be a beauty...
606zp, We are going to many "historical" sites while back there. Here in CO. if it goes back to 1850 it is OLD! That is such a painful wait. I wanted to go to St. Louis to pick mine up. It spent 10 days on the rail to Denver 863 miles. I hope yours comes in soon. Tow package? I think its a steal, looks good they throw in a 7pin to 4 flat plug converter and a wiring harness to plug in a trailer brake, plus it is prewired to the back. Only complaint... why don't they include a plug for the reciever. A nice RAM logo cover would be nice. I bought a stainless steel plug with the Broncos logo on it that looks nice. No I didn't jump on the "bandwagon" I've been a loyal fan since 1960 and suffered through MANY seasons before this past one. :-) I just couldn't buy the Ram one because I thought they could include it with the truck. You know the factory is making over 10k for a truck like mine. I sure like the grey leather, I was leaning towards the camel but my son liked the grey. I think they are both good looking. For those of you who are sitting in your truck late at night and the neighbors are calling the police to check you out here's a tip... put it in the garage!
So the makers of Mercedes Benz are negotiating to buy Chrysler for a rumored sum of about $35 billion, I believe. Will it have any impact on the Dodge trucks?
can anyone tell me gas mileage on the 95 Dodge pickup with 5.9L -V8 magnum I believe they called it....I need a tow package for travel trailer...but will need to get good mileage when camped somewhere?...pls help.. thx .Lewk
Mike, I know there's a good reason why its going to be 17-18 week order to receipt time on this truck, but I doubt I'm ever going to know. The best info I have is it was shipped or released from the factory April 27. Sounds like it takes two weeks to get to Mobile, Alabama by boat. I'm hopeing it doesn't take too long to reload it onto a rail car in Mobile. As the crow flies its approx 1000 miles from Mobile to Baltimore, Maryland. Carlisle is 120 miles from there. I think I'm still 2-3 weeks away. If it goes past June 5 I'll really be a disappointed cowboy. Thanks for asking, it helps to vent. On the positive side I sold my pop-up today. Was in the paper two days, went fast. Next I have to start thinking about selling my '90 Cummins. What do you think it may be worth? LS 2x4 with 75k miles. I don't believe Edmund's numbers on this type of truck.
Ron, I have no idea what your old truck might be worth, you might try some of the other auto sites. Glad to here your truck is finally on the way, I will keep my fenders crossed for you to get it by vacation time.. Sunny11, is the guy that had his new truck stop in the middle of the strip in Las Vegas right? It doesn't seem that it would be too hard to find a prob like that on a diesel. There are a lot fewer possibilities than with a gas engine.
A guy that I work with told me that a friend of his got a new Dodge 3500 dully 24V Cummins with a 6 speed transmission last weekend. I guess they are out already...
606zp, Got my truck back today. The dealer had to bring in a Zone Tech from Chrysler to diagnose the problem..was the transfer lift pump. Drove it on the highway tonight & in town & so far, so good. And what we were told here in Denver is that most of the diesel mechanics are just now being trained on the 24v diesels. That's why they had to bring in a Zone tech..I guess they are completely trained on these engines & also have more up to date diagnostic equipment for the 24 valves. And by the way, Mharde2...I happen to be the lady that drives the 98 2500HD Quad 24v 5speed.Once I drove one that was all it took..better than any car I've ever driven & mine has all the comforts..totally loaded. Just happy to have it back.
Maybe we could all call Customer Service and ask about 606zp's truck. Maybe they would get tired of it and send it Fed-ex! Here's hoping you get it this month.
I was going to warn you Mike but didn't get a chance. It pays to check the profile. You gott'a watch out for those "guys" with a first name "Anita"! Glad it was a simple fix, Sunny11. What's a tranfer lift pump?
I've owned a 2500 V-10 for about 4 months, have about 9300 miles on it, and do 50% > 100 mile trips, 40% a 22-mile turnpike commute, 10% city.
First impressions: This is a BIG truck. 9.5 to 10 mpg first 2000 mi very smooth, for a truck Remember to tell the wife/sigother/girlfriend about driving differences between 5500 lb. truck and 1800 lb car. Get a bedliner.
Present impressions: It's still a BIG truck. ABS is a good thing. Mud and snow 265's are also a good thing. Highway milage is 12.5 to 13, depends on speed. Is there anything this truck can't haul? The further ahead I think, the better my gas milage. The smoother I drive, the better my gas milage. Starting or stopping, this much metal needs time and distance.
I love this truck, owning it has been like coming home after a hard trek.
Thanks for the input! Gas mileage isn't going to be the determining factor, but will be a factor. People I've seen on the road with a gas 2500 model mostly have the 360" engine, and they say they are gas hogs. I was just wondering if you regret getting the 488" engine. Why not the 5.9 diesel? This will be a first time NEW purchase. A lot of money.
Don - Great news on your 2500 V-10. I've been narrowing my decision down and have decided on either a 2500 V-10 or a new F-250 V-10. Is there a reason for no diesel? And is your 2500 a SWB or LWB? Congrats again.
I'm the unhappy owner of a 98 Ram 1500 with the 3.9L V-6. It's six weeks old with 2000 miles. The engine was smooth enough for a V-6 when I bought it, but it developed a very rough spot at about 1400 rpm (guessing--no tach) at about 600 miles. Mileage was 20 mpg in 5th on hiway for first tank, then has dropped to 15 mpg, no load, no tailgate, hiway in 5th.
One dealer says they all do it, go buy hi-test gas. Another dealer says they all do it, etc. A third dealer said it's got problems, and replaced flywheel. This did nothing, then they kept it for a week and did nothing. Everybody in the place was a) sick, b) in a bad accident, c) whatever. Kept promising to contact Chrysler, never did, said "there are a lot of factories involved." (!!!)
I have driven three other V-6s on lots, and they "all do it."
Does anyone know how accurate the fuel gauges are in the lwb trucks. 35 gallons, I'm still on my first tank with 420 miles on it. Showing 3/8ths+ of a tank left. I sure like the truck, ride seems a little stiff with the HD spring in back. Maybe this truck will get over 20 mpg. It's a 3/4 ton, cummins 24valve. One thing I have found out, if you go through a drive through (assuming you will fit, these trucks are BIG compared to my chevy 3/4 ton) you have to turn the engine off to tell the person what you want to eat or you may get a real strange order!
There are only certain drive-thrus that I will go to, not so muuch because I can or can't fit with a 3500 4x4 dually, but whether or not they're rude about serving me in the truck. I _ALWAYS_ shut down the Cummins when I get to the order board, but if they still b*tch when I get to the window, I don't go back.
You know how you show the invoice prices on vehicles and their options, is there anything showing what a dealer pays for accessories?
For example, the Dodge web site shows a chrome grille guard for a Ram pickup for the price of $405. Surely this can be bought for less can't it?
Most of the time you get what you pay for, except when you buy parts from the dealer; then you just get raped. "Yes sir, your window seal we ordered came in today, that'll be $75 please".
Pineel, Sorry to here about you engine problems, has anyone put it on a diag computer yet. You have got a definite problem. Maybe someone here will give you some suggestions.
I'm looking at buying a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 four wheel drive, extended cab. I was just curious if anyone has one and if they do, are they happy with its performance and also what kind of problems they have with them.
Multiply the list price by 0.85 and you will get the dealer price. In some cases this may be off by a few dollars but usually is right on. I did this and tabulated the prices for all the accessories I wanted plus used edmunds for dealer invoice on the truck and options I wanted. Everything was exact with the dealer price except the Chrome tubular side steps have gone up in price since they printed the accessories handbook. If you have a list of what you want and the MSRP and dealer price for each item, you will most likely get to look at the dealer invoice and catalog which lists dealer prices. Look like you've done a lot of homework and most dealers won't quibble with you.
We provide dealer invoices for the vehicles and also for the options the sell as part of the vehicle.
It would be next to impossible for us to include the same for all "accessories" since those are individual dealer choices.
In other words, the Dodge "site" you refer to may list a chrome grill guard, but it is most likely sold through the Dodge site, but manufactured by a third party vendor. This is why it is an "accessorie" and not an "option."
Example: I bought a cup-holder from my local Jeep dealer when I got my Cherokee. It mounts on the passenger's side of the transmission hump. Very intrusive, but better than nothing.
Later, I saw a Jeep Cherokee with a nice cup-holder mounted right on the center of the console right in front of the arm rest. PERFECT. I sought out the owner of the Cherokee and he said he got it at HIS Jeep dealer (different dealer). When I went back to my dealer, they said, yeah, they get their accessories from different sources. They were eventually able to put me in touch with the manufacturer, and I got it.
Bottom line, if it's an "accessory," as opposed to an "option," it's because it's from a third party vendor and not made by the manufacturer.
Since there's no end to the number of third party vendors, it's virtually impossible to get a listing of every accessory available, let alone dealer cost.
i own a 97 RAM 1500 with the 360. anyone know if there's a chip set out there to boost HP? also is 93 octane needed in the 5.9 v-8 or does it even make a difference from 87 or 89 oct?

The Mopar filter looked better constructed than the Fram filter I put on. I may get one from Dodge next time, if I can't find out who makes theirs.
I got the 3.55 rear end but some times wonder if the 4.10 wouldn't be better. I wish they offered a 3.73, that would about perfect for me. But they don't, so I'm not much help there.

I got the gas engine because I got a deal on the truck.
It is a longbed.
It uses 87 octane unleaded.
Thanks for all the good wishes,
