Hi. I have a '95 Dodge 1500 5.2L Auto SB SLT. I'd like to add some simple performance items (power pulleys, catback exhuast, ect), but Most catalogs are for ford/chevy. I have a K&N filter, but need more!
Does anyone have ANY good web sites for the dodge Pickups?

I have an 1998 Chevy 1500C shortbed. I am interested in getting more ground clearance to get through high water periods here in south Louisiana. What is the best way to get another few inches, without screwing up the stock suspention balance? 16" rims and tall tires, or do I need to get spring lifts, etc?
  • cdeancdean Member Posts: 1,110
first of all i'm not sure how you are going to get 16" rims of a chevy half ton. taller tires probably won't give you the lift you're looking for. to do a suspension lift on a chevy, you can put blocks on the rear springs, and get a donut spacer and put that under your front coil springs, which will give you a couple of inches, max. if you want to do a proper lift, you will need a lift kit, which involves new A-arms, and new springs and shocks all the way around.

Could someone please explain to me the advantages and disadvantages of a K&N Air Filter. I know a bunch of people who have them, just do not know why I should get one! Thanks :)

could someone tell me what XLT stands for on my Ford Ranger
  • renonevadarenonevada Member Posts: 69
I need explanations on several items of interest to me (on Chevy pickups).
    1) Why does a 3/4-ton pickup weigh approx. 1200 pounds more than a 1/2-ton pickup? Surely it cannot be just the 'beefier' suspension?
    2) Do you feel that the new Chevrolet engines with aluminum heads will be as reliable as the infamous 5.7 liter (350 ci) engine of current production? Everyone I know says to stay away from aluminum engines.
    3) Can you get the 46mm shocks on the Z71 package as optional equipment (by themselves) on a 2wd Chevy pickup?
  • JTOJTO Member Posts: 28
    mikeb6,

I put a K&N air filter on my dodge. It didn't make as much a difference (performance wise) as it did on my mustang. The fuel mileage went up almost a mile per gallon though! Which helped pay the cost ($39) of the filter. After 10000 miles I cleaned it and reinstalled with no problem.

    1) Yep, its all in the suspension, tranny, motor....
    2) Most all those [non-permissible content removed] vehicles you've been driving have aluminum heads. Biggest issue with aluminum heads on cast iron block is differential coefficient of expansion between the metals, this tends to shear head gaskets... then you have a blown head gasket which leads to overheating and warped heads. Most manufacturers have solved the problem with premium head gaskets but they still crop up.... Toyota v-6 4runners recently announced a recall.
    3) Everything I've read about the new z71 package says it is too stiff---Only good for high speed off roading. You can easily add a set of stiff shocks when the old ones wear out. Shocks do not typically effect ride height, only dampening of suspension movement.

I have a quick question and maybe I am asking it in the wrong conference. Recently a friend of mine came across and managed to get a 1963 Chevy Longbed pickup 1/2 ton with a 3 spd manual and an inline 6 engine. My question is it worth restoring this truck? It apparently has very little rust other than the front fenders and some slight damage to a rear quarterpanel. Thank you for yall's time.

My friend thinks that the hummer is a general motros product. Is he right? I don't think it is, i think they just use there diesel engines, I don't know why they would use gm's 6.5 when they could be using dodges 5.9cummins, but any way just wondering if hummers are a gm product or not, does anyone know?

    Take a look at http://www.classictruckshop.com/
I found it by hitting my search engine with; chevy trucks.
It's only "worth it" to restore if you truly enjoy the process. It seems to be the rare exception to end up with an actual financial gain. The "worth it" is to be able to see the "well broken in" vehicle of interest become a joy to drive and talk about. Good luck and enjoy the pain and suffering along the way to "I did it myself."
I seem to be the only one in my family who can picture my derilict vehicle "all one shiny color and purring."

dodgeram: The Hummer is an AM General product. They use parts from many different manufacturers during the construction process. The main reason for the GM engines is size from what I can tell. I've considered getting a softtop, but I really don't like that turbo diesel much... then again, I understand that the current ones are nicer than those of a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the advice, and as for the truck it aint much and I have scrapped the idea for now thanks again.
  • cdeancdean Member Posts: 1,110
they also put the vortec 350 in the Hummer.
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
    But not for a while.
  • cdeancdean Member Posts: 1,110
The Vortec 350 has been going in the hummer since Vortec came out in '96. i remember reading articles couple years back.

what exactly do you mean, stanford?
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
Well, if you talk to a Hummer dealer, or check out their website, you'll notice that the only engines currently offered in the Hummer are the diesels.

    Jeep,

That depends on your definition of "mid-size". Technically, the only mid-sized pickups have been the Dakota and T100. What size class are you looking at?

I was juswondering if anyone could tell me if the new Chevy Silverado had any incentives or rebates?
I looked for them on the Edmund's page but could only find the afforementioned for the c/k series.
If any one knows the answer please email me at pipelrod@falcon.cc.ukans.edu
  • RichRich Member Posts: 128
    jeffi,
Generally speaking, the y2k bug will only cause problems when the computer system does date arithmetic. Motor vehicles do not do date arithmetic and therefore do not have a y2k problem. It's just a scare tactic by people who want to buy used vehicles at rock bottom prices. They figure that if enough people get scared they'll trade in there vehicles for new and y2k compliant ones. Then there will be a glut of used vehicles on the market and prices depressed. It's all a right wing conspiracy. ;-)

Depends on which way you are looking from, but it could be a LEFT wing conspiracy.
  • DavyddDavydd Member Posts: 121
Nada. No rebates, no incentives, no low interest rates on the Chevy Silverado at this time. No need so far.

I have a 99 dodge 3500 quad dulie 4x4, I find myself correcting the stering all the time on the freeway is this a normal thing with duel wheels or what ?
  • RichRich Member Posts: 128
I got a shock today with my '99 SD SC F-250. I had it weighed and it is 400 pounds heavier that my '92 of the same configuration. Both are diesels and 8' bed.
With almost a full load of fuel and myself the beast weighed in at 7060 pounds. That's three and a half tons! Distribution was about 4100 front and 2900 rear.

I have a 92 Chevy S-10 6 cyl. extra cab, with a cap. I will be looking to by a comparable new truck probably the end of this year. My understanding is that the bed length is obsolete. Is this true? I would like to by a truck with the same bed length, to be able to transfer the cap.
  • cdeancdean Member Posts: 1,110
    jrdm
the s-10 has been totally redesigned since '92. Nothing the same, nothing will fit.

the only truck you cap will fit is that exact body style truck.
  • DavyddDavydd Member Posts: 121
Not only does it have to fit the bed, it also has to fit the cab profile width, slope, height, design, etc.

    Hi to all,
I'm thinking of buying an 87 F250 Rollalong...it is a supercab with a 460 and auto trans ,My question is, has anyone got any info on this model? It appears to be aheavy 3/4 ton, but looks like a tonner, having dual rear wheels and massive front hubs. It is apparently some sort of heavy towing rig...Was ford trying to get an insurance rate cut or something by going the f250 route ? How many years was this model produced? any info will be appreciated. Thanks Coaltrain
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
To the best of my knowledge, Ford never made an F250 DRW. There are several aftermarket DRW kits available for the F250 though -- could you be looking at one of those?
  • coaltraincoaltrain Member Posts: 3
The current owner says he bought the truck new equipped as it is.It has "roll along" printed on the upper leading edge of each front fender.Looks completely stock to me. NO fancy paint ,standard xlt interior. Other than heavy duty running boards, truck doesn't appear modified. Thanks for repliing Stanford...What's a DRW? Anyone got any ideas on this one?
  • akjbmwakjbmw Member Posts: 231
I've seen one, didn't know what it was either. I'll be watching to see how this turns out?
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
    DRW = Dual Rear Wheels
  • coaltraincoaltrain Member Posts: 3
Duh... I can't believe I didn't know that meant a dually...Iguess I've been out of the loop too long. Thank you, stanford and akjbmw ...At least I know I'm not hallucinating. Where did you see it? does anyone know of an official ford web site that might have more info on this matter?Any help will be appreciated.

Hi, can anyone tell me where I can find out what kind of seat is in the back of the various brands of extended-cab pickups?
We've got a new baby in the family and those sideways-facing jump seats aren't gonna work.

    Thanks!
  • tnt2tnt2 Member Posts: 115
I believe that the compacts are the only ones that have the side facing seats. If you are looking at smaller than full size, I think dodge is coming out with a true 4dr dakota. All fullsize trucks have front facing seats. Also, I've been in baby-seat-ext. cab-truck position before and it's no treat.
  • aaron8aaron8 Member Posts: 22

i used to own a 97 dodge dakota and the rear seat was forward facing, as are most. i'm not sure about import trucks, but i know that the only truck that have side facing seats was the ford ranger back in 1994.
  • ladyblueladyblue Member Posts: 326
    I had a 90 Mazda B2000 that had forward-facing rear seats. It's been a while since I've seen those side-facing seats.
