I have experienced a problem with the fan speed for the heater/defroster. The fan will operate only in the #5 position which is the maximum setting on the blower switch. Other then this problem I am very satisfied with my 2000 Silverado 1500 ext. cab 4x4, 5.3 engine, 3.73 posi-rear, Z71 package and presently have just under 2000 miles. Any help out there on the blower problem, I am not in a hurry to return to the dealership.

    I ordered a Chevy 1500 4X4 Ext Cab with the 4th
door I have until Fri. to change my order and I am
trying to decide if it is worth getting the 5.3L
motor or should I stay with the 4.8L?
I have heard that the 5.3 is getting better
mileage, has anyone found that to be true?
Oh and how are the factory tonneau covers?
  • rrichfrrichf Member Posts: 211
    payner,
You're pushing extra weight in the 4X4 configuration. If it were me, I would go for the extra half liter. I think that in a few thousand miles you'll be glad you did.

jackjoyner1 - I know this is not a place for vendors, but I might be able to help you with that owners manual. I buy/sell owners/shop manuals for older vehicles. send email to abbera@automanuals.com and I'll see what I can do.

    Excuse me,
But am I misinterpreting the option list and its codes for the 2000 Dakota Quad Cab 2WD? It looks like you can not get the V8 without 4WD. Perhaps someone can correct or confirm this perception. Thanks in advance.

  • wetwilliewetwillie Member Posts: 129
The engine option codes for the 2WD and the 4WD are identical: EVA for the 4.7L(this is the one you want in my humble opinion), EML for the 5.9L.

Has anyone seen the color "Cramer Brown Tan/Copper?" I'm shopping for a 2000 F-350 SD 4WD DRW LB and although that color is not in the sales brochure, I saw it listed under options here at Edmunds. If you know about it, can you get it w/the XLT pkg. or is it just for the Lariat version? What interior color(s) are available w/it?

I want to buy a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 series truck. Can anyone suggest a dealer that works directly w/a conversion company? Most dealers that I have found will only do aftermarket changes after you purchase the truck. This seems like a waste of money. I have seen some beautiful conversion trucks on the road. How can I find one?

In 2000 the F-250 IS the super duty. Before they had an F150 and F250 light duty and then they had F250 and up super duty. They dropped the F250 light duty and instead offer an F150 with an increased payload package. Go back and click on the 2000 F250 and you will get your info.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANY BODY CAN TELL ME IF FORD IS GOING TO PUT A 3:55 REAREND IN THE F-250SD ANYTIME SOON?
  • cmardercmarder Member Posts: 2
Also would like to know about the gas mileage in a F-250 SC with a 5.4 liter with a 3:73 rear-end? And a diesel with a 3:73 rear-end?

Does anybody know what can be done to avoid spare tire theft on a 2000 Ford 150 4x4. I'm not sure if you can lock the spare or chain it and lock it. Anybody else have similar concerns or remedies?

    Thanks for any input.

I have a 93 Chev K2500 4x4 Turbo diesel long bed running stock 235/65 R16 tires. It is a work/play truck that is used for hauling, towing and off-road (hunting, camping, exploring, etc. on roads that are usually rough and washed out.) As I don't believe in driving slow, I've bottomed out the heavy T-D engine more than once! I am not a rock-crawler or heavy off-road enthusiast, however, I am looking for good shocks. I am willing to spend the money on Bilsteins or Ranchos, but if Monroe or Gabriels will work, that's great! I don't mind a stiff ride (I was born and raised in pickups) as long as it handles well. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  • rrichfrrichf Member Posts: 211
    nuyawkr,
There is a key device that fits into the crank tube and effectively secures the spare tire. I purchased mine at the Ford dealer in the $30 range, I think. Installation is a 2 minute deal.

I have a 98 Toyota Tacoma extended cab. I would like to know if I have a problem with the bed of my truck. Looking at it from the rear, it dips down form right to left. I asked the dealer service advisor about it and he and two of his mechanics said it was normal, that most pickups had this appearance. I figured he ought to know what he's talking about, but other trucks don't appear to have it, at least as noticeably. Was he lying to me?
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
the easiest way to tell if the service advisor was lying to you would be to park your truck next to a brand new one on the lot and compare. I would bet that he just flaked you off. That "normal" line is used so many times in a day, maybe they get caught on 5% of them. Another one that they use is "within acceptable tolerance".

Hello all. I own a 94 Ranger with the 3.0L V-6 engine, five speed manual trans. and 134,000 miles on the clock. This truck has run wonderfully until recently. It won't start immediately when it has sat for 36 or more hours, and/or when the weather is especially damp. It has original everything...plugs, filters, serpentine belt, etc. Obviously the oil has been changed regularly! I have been told that the starting problem is probably just old plugs/wires, and that replacing them will solve 99% of the problem, and make my truck run a heck of a lot better too! This said, how hard a job is it to change a set of ORIGINAL plugs on a truck this old? Will they stick and break in the block? I can change my oil, can I change my plugs and filters easily too? In short, what would all you shadetree mechanics recommend I do? I cannot see paying my local Ford dealer $79.95 to change 6 spark plugs!! What do you recommend?
  • davises3davises3 Member Posts: 2
BTW...The Ford computer analysis showed that nothing was wrong with the engine.
  • dberrydberry Member Posts: 22
    I have a '91 Ranger with the 3.0 L 6 cyl with just over 200,000 miles.

The damp not starting quidkly is the cap and rotor. The age on the wires probably has caused moisture to get to the aluminum connections and into the cap. Since your connections now have corrosion their the moisture becomes more present and will cause you to start slower and act rough. After the engine warms up the moisure evaporates and everything will seam fine.

The Plugs are Platinum. They may or may not need changed. No one really knows how long they will last, but should be checked for gap and condition every 60,000 miles. I got some bad gas at about 70,000 miles that made them very dirty, so I had to replace that set. I ran the next set about 80,000 miles before I had the same problem.

With the correct tools, changing them yourself will take about 30 -40 minutes. There is one that is difficult to get (by the heater core).

Remember and hour of maintainance is worth a day in some mechanics garage!

    Good Luck!

Does anyone have any information on the severity of injury to the passengers in the side facing seats in a compact ext. cab truck. I can't seem to find any. Personal experiences would unfortunately be great. I am considering either a S-10 or full size C1500 and want an informed opinion before I buy. Thx
  • andy_jordanandy_jordan Member Posts: 764
The problem with obtaining information in these circumstances is that the seats are often too small for accurate testing. The five star rating is often quoted and the figures for make and model are available at www.nhtsa.gov

Without exception though the compact trucks were classed "seats too small" for back seat testing. The only accurate statistics I can think of is statistics for actual accidents, and I don't know where they would be available. They also wouldn't relate terribly well to current year models.

isn't the correct address to get to Chrome Data web site. Which is the site that most car dealers use to price out a vehicle. FYI the address: www.webcarbook.com/index.htm . I have used this site since I first started looking to price out a pickup. Dealer gave me a copy of a print out, no prices listed of course, just the option numbers. But I finally found the web site. It is the same as CarWizard. In fact C/W uses Chrome Date for their pricing.

    Have a nice day :)

I'm looking at a F150 4x4 supercab. I have a trailer with gross weight of 4000#.....one Ford dealer told me I needed 17" wheels while another said 16" wheels is the way I want to go. Which is it and why?
Second question: GM's 4.8 & 5.3 engine with 3.73 rear end are both rated in mileage as 15/18.....how can it be the same?
  • toolmakrtoolmakr Member Posts: 1
I just read about GM coming out with a 6.6 diesel engine in 2001. It's supposed to have 300hp. and 525 ft. lbs. of torque. I pull a 16,000 lb. fifth wheel travel trailer and am hooked on Chevys. Does anyone have info regarding this. When can I order one??

Does anyone know what the tow rating is for a 1995 Chey 1500 with a 4.3L engine/Manual Transmission. I have checked the door facing and glove compartment for the Infor. stickers but none were available. Rear axle Infor. is not available at this time .

I am presently looking at a 98 GMC Sierra 2500 4x4 with the 454 Vortec engine anf five speed manual transmission.
I'm a little concerned about the gas mileage as I will be using it as my personal vehicle as well as towing some landscaping equipment.
Does anyone have an idea of the mileage that i might expect.
My driving habits are pretty easy and would be primarily on the highway.

I'm 'bout to take delivery on a 2000 Silverado SLT and was wondering about the "spray-in" bed liner versus the "drop-in".
  • igates2igates2 Member Posts: 2
Ihave seen both liners on trucks and I believe I would prefer the "Spray -in "one. moisture will not penetrate the bed and its is easier to repair if cut, etc. The spray-in also comes in colors so you better match it to your truck. The only down side would be the cost. But I think it would be worth it in the long run..IG
  • rrichfrrichf Member Posts: 211
    Skip70,
When I was pricing a spray in liner I was quoted a $200 surcharge for any color other than black.

One dealer told me that they really don't want to do color because the equipment has to be cleaned before and after the color spray AND the color must be sprayed with a UV protectant. So I went with the black, even in a white truck. It looks good and is very rugged.

I am new to this site and am wondering if it is possible to locate a vehicle by using the VIN number. I ordered a new 2500 Silverado on Oct.29th and am told it was built the last week of March. I would like to tract my truck by using the VIN number if that is possible. Has anyone tried this and if so how do I go about locating my truck. Really anxious and need it badly.

I'm looking at a 92 F150 with the 300 c.i. 6. It has 108000 miles. The 4 speed automatic has a pretty jerky shift from 3rd to 4th. Anybody know if this is characteristic of the year or indicative of a possible problem?
  • towcrazy2towcrazy2 Member Posts: 337
I developed some dealership training on the Duramax about 4 months ago as a prelude to the rollout (I believe in June). You're correct in the power specifications. The engine is manufactured by Isuzu, and is Chevy's "secret weapon" in trying to get market share back from Ford.

It really is quite a motor! As a side note, during R&D on the truck, they ran it at a local drag strip against both diesel-powered Dodge and Ford trucks. It walked away from them both. For kicks, they ran the truck against a new Corvette. Undfortunately, the Vette had it by a few seconds.

I was wondering what all of you thought about an old debate!! In response to the higher gas prices, I have seen many more pickups on the road driving with their tailgates down. Does this really make a difference in gas mileage!!?? Or is it a good theory that goes no further!? I am of the opinion that it MAY make a difference, but nothing that you would be likely to notice in your wallet. But I have friends who swear up and down that there is a noticeable difference. Set us straight.
  • rshornsbyrshornsby Member Posts: 200
You might try the following location to determine the drag that is generated in a lot of combinations. Then you can form your own opinion.

    htt://mars.acnet.wnec.edu/~ehaffner/did.htm

The less drag, the more efficient....

    Have a good day....

My brother says this is simple to do so his know-it-all little sister should not need his help. I know more than him on everything but this, can someone help me so I don't have to admit it to him.

I have an S-10 pickup with a shell and was given a 12 volt interior light. All I want to do is hook it up but can't find any instructions, everyone just says it is easy.

When I bought the shell they hooked up the extra stop light inside the left turn signal/stop light.

But my manual says there is a pig-tail wire where you can hook up an extra tail light, I did find a wire covered in tape near the left wheel.

I tried hooking the dome light to that but nothing happened. Does the ignition have to be on? I hope not, what I want is a light I can use in the shell without using bunches of batteries.

    Thanks, Danielle

    I recently purchased a 1997 Chevy K 3500 Crew Cab
Pickup that has "speed sensitive power steering". I find that the steering is too light for my liking even at freeway speeds. My 1993 Chev K 3500 Crew Cab had stiffer steering that gave you a much better feel of the road. Can anyone tell me if the 1997 steering can be adjusted or modified to make it stiffer- or know where I might find the answer to this question? thanks!!
  • mahimahimahimahi Member Posts: 497
I think that you'll probably need to try both configurations to see which is best. My experience with in the past has been that with my '81 Toyota 4x4 5-sp was that it got 1-2 mpg less with the tailgate down, my '94 S-10 SS 4.3L V-6 auto 2x4 got anywhere from the same to 2 mpg less. My brother's Isuzu 4x2 4cyl. 5 sp got 1-2 mpg better. I'm going to Miami this weekend and I am anxious to see the difference it makes on my 2000 Nissan Crew Cab. If you want I can post the results Mon.

I am insertested in getting into a compact truck for the first time. I like the looks of a 4x4 but not the added price. I dont think I need 4x4 except for a handful of snowstorms. Can I buy a 4x2 and cheaply make it look like a 4x4? I looked at the Ford Ranger, they offer an option group called Trailhead, which makes a 4x2 look like a 4x4.Is this a rip off? Will I always regret not getting the 4x4 if i go the cheap route and get a 4x2? What else should I look at besides the Ford Ranger> Thanks
  • eharri3eharri3 Member Posts: 640
My rear drive ranger went nowhere and I mean absolutely nowhere in the last big 6-8 inch storm we had in philly. I had to wait till it was down to only a few inches and even then I had to lug about 200 lbs into the bed to get real traction. Hills still tended to give it a little trouble. My next truck is a long way off but it WILL be a 4x4. Never again will I watch front drive sedans roll by while I spin my tires like mad just to make it a few feet.
  • tacoma_trdtacoma_trd Member Posts: 135
If you are looking for 4x2 with the look of a 4x4, there is many options, first of all the ranger trailhead is only availible in single cab, and limited to 4 colors, there is the mazda B3000 troy lee edition, which has the 4x4 suspension in a 4x2, but the B4000 troy lee is a 4x4, there is also the nissan frontier desert runner a 4x2 with 4x4 suspension, the tacoma prerunner a 4x2 with 4x4 suspension, all of them start around $18k

If you are considering, or know someone considering buying a Dodge Ram pickup, please have them take a quick look at

    It is worth the time.

Sounds like you have had your share of "pass the buck to someone else". Personally I would never buy a Chrysler product, of any kind. (Just my own personal choice. Not to knock anyone else's choice). My son-in-laws father used to have a Dodge pickup. Outside looked really nice, inside was a disaster, especially the seats. Non-exsistant padding after about 2 years. It is called the road of hard knocks I guess.

Good luck on your chase of the elusive "fair" dealing. Suggestion: Look at a Silverado 2500.

    Have a nice day... :)

i hate chevy and dodge but i have to agree with the guy before me that a chevy 2500 is really good all around trucks. But i would choose the more dependable and top selling F-250 (more power(Towing) but not as many options as the chevy(but who needs a compass))

i have the same problem in a ranger no traction whatsoever in the rain or even mud...you can get stuck in the middle of the wet roads out there
