How long does GM shutdown for thanksgiving vacation
  • wxfcstrwxfcstr Member Posts: 18
Dave40: It used to be just 4 or 5 days, long enough to have a long weekend.

Kasi4ever: Good Luck in using your GM employee discount to order/buy a new body style GM truck. I got lucky enough to find one (GMC Dealer) in Ft Worth TX. Most dealers I talked to said take a hike. They would rather sell their allocation of trucks to other dealers than at a GM employee discount to someone who wants it. Your aware GM has totally revamped the GM employee ordering/buying procedure. Given the new discount difference between the GMO (ordering) and GMS (out of stock) purchase, it's really worth buying out of stock now, if you can find a truck you like on the dealer lot and need it in a hurry. Good Luck.

About the current wait period for a 2wd extended cab Silverado LT in California: Placed order/deposit with dealer on October 16th
Received allocation (albeit with certain restrictions) on November 24th (@ 6 weeks) A build date of the week of January 11 (@ 13 weeks) Tentative delivery: January 29th (a total of 15 weeks.)
Chevrolet Motors continues to offer their dealers a tentative 12 week delivery schedule, which is relatively accurate when you factor in Holiday shut-downs. Well, at least now there's a light at the end of the tunnel...

A dealer here in Dallas let me take a '99 Silverado home last night for a trial run. I'm on the brink of placing an order and I wanted to get a feel for the suspension. This one had the Z85 towing / trailering suspension. Now I know that a truck is not a Cadillac, but the ride was rougher than I expected, at least compared to the previous C/K truck. I'm leaning to the Z83 base suspension in hopes that the ride is smoother. Actually, the dealer indicated that he could now order the ZX3 (electronic switch between Z85 and Z83). That sounds pretty good if it really works.

The lack of a 4th door is going to be a bother for me. I really looked that over last night and getting stuff into and out of the back seat from the driver's side requires a little more effort than I prefer (this one had 6-way power seats). It seems to me that I'm pretty well going to have to walk around even to put grocery sacks or anything else back there. Even if the 3rd door was just on the driver's side, it would work much better for me.

Regarding the 2000 model (which everything I read says will have the 4th door), any guesses as to when one would be able to order those? Should I assume that they will be available next fall and that dealers will start taking orders in June or July?

I'm planning on getting the Chevrolet dealers fax numbers from the Chevy website. I'm planning on faxing an offer on the exact truck that I want. One that is already on the lot. What should I offer over invoice? This is in the Northeast Texas area around Dallas. Anyone have any advice or experience?

no_body_74: I've been buying/leasing chevy trucks every three years in New England since 1986, and am about to get my fourth pickup on lease. I shopped a lot of dealers before I found one that would deal with me without a lot of BS. Now they get all my business. I start each deal at $200 over invoice and apply incentives after that. A lot of dealers won't do it, but you can find the one that will. If your lucky, you may even find one that will sell at invoice. Good Luck

wxfcstr: Thank you. You confirmed what I thought about GM dealership's attitude about GMS. Especially with the limited availability of these trucks at the moment and the dealers wanting maximum profits on the "hot" model truck.
I will probably make one more pass this week at the chevy/gmc dealerships but will start looking for a Ford truck. Seems availability and incentives will make this a deal. May not like the look of the Ford, but with a truck it's what under the sheet metal that counts.

When you people talk about getting a certain vehicle for 'x' dollars over invoice does this include destination charge and tt&l? Like if the vehicle was invoice price of $20,000, and you add $500 for dealer profit which is your 'x' over invoice do you also add $400 (or whatever the amount is) for destination and $600 (or whatever the amount is) for tt&l for a total of $21,500 out the door price. Or do you just pay the $500 over invoice and that is your out the door price. Could someone clear this up for me?

    Plelan:
The term "drive wheel" is a misleading term. On a 4x4, all wheels are "drive wheels".
A differential is set up to allow the two wheels to turn at different rates so you won't put too much stress on the axles with a sharp turn. There is no differential between the front and rear axles on 4x4's, that is why they don't recommend driving on dry pavement with it in 4 wheel drive. This gearing in the differentials works great on dry pavement, and sends equal power to both wheels. The problem comes when one wheel is on something slippery. This will allow one wheel to slip and rob the power from the other wheel. A limited slip has something like a centrifugal clutch that will brake the spinning wheel and prevent it from robbing the power from the other one.
So, if you have a 4x4 without limited slip, you would get stuck if you had one front and one rear wheel on something real slippery, but with limited slip, you would have to have both rear and one front wheel in something real slippery. If however you have a 2x4 without limited slip, you would get stuck if either rear wheel (assuming rear wheel drive) were on something real slippery.
Your explanation wasn't quite right, but you do come to the right end result.

I was once told that a dealership was willing to sell a special order truck at near cost because it had no effect on their "allocations". Now it seems that "allocations" are the exactly what dealers need in order to place a special order truck?! My dealer just informed me that 3 allocations just came available for Silverados according to his computer and that he took my 2 special orders and slid them into two of the allocation slots and we now have a production date of Dec 7th. I thought he was doing me a great favor by using up his allocation for my benefit but now I'm wondering if this is exactly what the new system requires?
Anybody know or has had similar experience?
  • BrutusBrutus Member Posts: 1,113
    no body 74,

The destination charges and tt&l are non-negotiable, so they are basically part of the invoice price. When you're looking for a price of 'x' over invoice, you're basically looking for a price of 'x' over invoice, plus destination charge and tt&l. Of course, you will want to make sure that the dealer is not hiding any extra charges in these numbers. That's pretty easy to do. The destination charges are listed on this, and other, sites. If the tt&l looks fishy, you can always confirm it with your DMV. If you're getting your own financing, your financial instituation can also tell you the tt&l since they are mailing it to the DMV.

I hate to be critical but I've been on this site of and on for a couple months and I see only a handful of people getting responses to their questions...just not enough action. Does anyone know of a chat room or a site that deals with the chevy trucks that one might be able to get a better rate of feedback...thanks.
(under the circumstances I'm not holding my breath if you know what I mean)LOL.

This is not an answer to your question but yet another question.

When did you place your order with your dealership that resulted in a build date of Dec 7th? I placed an order in CA on Oct 30th with no update on the status. Just trying to get an idea of where I stand.

    Thanks, MT

I ordered my truck on 9-28-98, and the truck was built today, 11-30-98, in Detroit. Anyone know when I could expect this truck at my dealer here in Minnesota? 2-3 weeks??????????????
  • jxyoungjxyoung Member Posts: 156
    Fish6

If the build date you were given was 11/30/98.
that means that it will be built the week of the 30th, it could be built any day up to Friday?
My dealer says that usually the truck is in in about 2 weeks? Lets hope they get it out of there before they shut down for the holidays (I understand around the 20th til Jan.). Good luck!

What did you order? I ordered a Z71 extended cab,
sportside, leather and all on 10/5/98, preferenced on 10/12/98 and have been told the sportsides are still on hold as of 11/16/98? Chevy says to call back in a few weeks. Guess I will be getting it in January or later??
  • fish6fish6 Member Posts: 50
jxyoung....I've never owned a 4x4 before, nor have I ever ordered a vehicle before. I ordered a black, 1/2 ton club cab, LS model. I was told the z71, which seems to be the choice of most buyers, was a bit rougher riding. I don't go off road, so I ordered the 4x4 without the z71 option in hopes of a nice highway ride. I pull a boat a lot in the summer and a snowmobile trailer in the winter, so a pick-up is a must. Also, did I mention I live in northern Minnesota, so to have 4 wheel drive will be nice for a change. I hope your right about the 2 weeks. I'm really anxious to get behind the wheel of this Chevy!

    Fish6,
jxyoung is right about all build dates being on monday. My truck had a build date of 11/2 (mon), was built on 11/6 (fri), released to the transport company on 11/7 and delivered to the dealer on 11/16. My dealer said that the transport companies have 12 days to deliver the truck to the dealer or pay inventory (or something) tax. Call GM customer assistance on 12/8 and they will probably tell you when the truck was built and when it was released to the transport company. Be patient, You'll LOVE the truck!!

    ajdawson,

There are some chat areas at the Fourwheeler site. I've not been in the Chevy area, so I can't vouch for it, although I have occassionally been in the Ford F-250/350 chat area. There was a guy hanging out in their who was an engineer for Ford, so he was pretty helpful. It might be worth a look to see if the Chevy area is any good. I think you have to go into the Tech area and then it breaks down into Manufacturer. The website is www.fourwheeler.com.

There are two other truck mag sites, but I don't know if there are chat areas. www.truckworld.com is one. I believe the other one is www.offroad.com.

  • jxyoungjxyoung Member Posts: 156
Is it just me or is the hype surrounding the Chevy starting to die? I wonder if it is just the fact that people are getting tired of waiting or maybe the honeymoon is over and we are getting back to the typical market?? Maybe it is just the holidays?

I can say that my enthusiasm has died in the last month since they said the sportsides are on hold and are not sure when they will start production on them.

Come on you guys that have gotten "The Truck" give us some feedback!

I have had a 99 Sierra on order since 10/6. I was told yesterday by the dealer that GM had put a hold on all trucks and that they were told not to expect their orders filled until March. I called GMC and they read off preference holds as of 11/25 as follows. Hold on: Reg cab 4x4 and 4x2, Ext cab 4x4 w/ autotrack, all G80 axle orders, all wideside body orders. They confirmed since my order included the WS body and G80 axle and was a regular cab it would not be preferenced in the near future.

    1) Do any of you w/ chevy trucks on order have a similar experience?

    2) Has anybody else been told this information and has anyone w/ these options recieved their truck lately?

I placed my order on 10-14-98 and have a build date of 12-7-98. Keep in mind though,as per my earlier post, I am unclear how chevy's new system works. My dealer says he changed two of his allocations to fit my orders. Is this the way the system works now or did he do me a favor?!!?

I know it's still early, and full production is still probably some time away, but... I still haven't seen too many of the new GM full-size trucks, either on the road, or on the dealer's lots. Sure, the dealers in my area all have a few new trucks, but not many. I've seen very few on the streets, probably no more than a half dozen or so. Every one that I have seen has been a short-bed 1500 extended-cab (and loaded) 4x4 model.

I did take one out for a 15-mile spin, and it drove very nicely. I'd still wait for next year's 4-door model though.

I have only posted a few times on this list. Last time I believe I said my 97 1/2 Z71 was doing a tolerable job of pulling my 5th wheel and I would probably wait for the 2000 model to get a 3/4 ton. Am considering a trip to Phoenix in February. Not sure I want that long a trip with my 1/2 ton. It does have the factory auxilery transmission and engine cooler. I run it it 3rd towing. But our trips have mostly been one dayers no further than Missouri. Will probably call my Chevy salesman later today and go look at Dodge's tomorrow. Lately I have come to realize how much a forth door would help me. I cann't unload groceries in my garage from the back seat because the door is on the wrong side. So have to unload outside and then bring the truck in. Or how many times a car is parked on my right in a parking lot so I cann't get to the back with bigger objects. The frustrating thing is I like many of the new features. Whats a person to do? I don't see deliveries of 3/4 tons getting better much sooner. It could be April before delivery. Rich
  • RichinKsRichinKs Member Posts: 412
Went to visit a Dodge dealer today looking for a 3/4 ton. My wife and I have both liked the Ram looks. We were both disappointed with the interior. Looked rather cheap, but thats why there are more than one manufacturer. Many probably say the same about Chevrolet. By the way, he gave us a 10-12 week delivery on the dodge. What with holiday shutdown coming .... Then we dropped by our chevy dealer and looked at some Silverado's for the first time. We liked them! Only problem they were all 1/2 tons. Had about 15 of them. But were able to check out interiors etc. ...... Drove a Z71 5.3 with 4.10 rearend. What getup and go! Took it on the highway and ran it 65 in third (auto) and turned 2800 rpm. Then OD to 72 at about 2000. That answered my questions about what RPM it turns with a 4.10. At 65 in third it had some snap when I punched it. ........ Dealer ran me some printouts of the LS and LT for study. For its few failings ( only 3 doors, poor delivery, small gas tank) it has some nice features and appeal. I guess we will pospone our trip to Arizona and decide whether to order one for about April delivery or wait till next fall to order a 4 door with delivery in April 2000 (G). Rich

Just heard today that the Silverado 1/2 ton 2WD Ext. Cab LT I ordered back in mid-Sept. has finally gotten a build date of Dec. 14 (maybe just in time for Christmas!) It was preferenced on Sept 29.

I ordered it with the G80 locking differential. I have heard various tales about what might happen to that portion of the order. One sales guy told me that Chev. was simply building and shipping trucks w/o this option even when it had been ordered by the customer. I e-mailed their customer assistance site tonight to check on whether or not they have done this on mine.

If (after waiting almost 3 months just to get a build date) Chev dropped an option from my order without my OK,I will be fed up with GM to the point that I will promptly begin looking for one of those Ford Superduty crew-cab short beds that my wife thinks are so cute.

Lokking to buy a new truck 3/4 ton. Live in canada, and Im comparing a Dodge 3/4 4x4 quad to chev 3/4 4x4 extcab 3door. Need truck for plowing, and towing. We currently have a base 94 4x4 3/4 with a 360 gas, and simply love the truck. THe truck has been perfect, we have a 8ft meyers plow, and will put the same size on the new one. My problem is comparing, can't find any spec on the new GM trucks, are they trying to hide something in there numbers or what. Went to dealer, and not one brochure had any specs on the trucks. Im looking for gvwr, trialering capacities, head room, leg room, etc. Too me GM is hiding something, but if anybody knows where i can get some specs please let me know. What truck would you prefer, for my application. PS> pulling trailers in the 7-9000lbs range.
  • RichinKsRichinKs Member Posts: 412
Picked up a new brochere at my dealers today. He said they just came in so your dealer may have them shortly. ..... 3/4 ton 4x4 GVWR 8600. Trailer and 5th wheel rating the same, 8000 with 3.73 and 10000 with 4.10 . requires HD trailering option. 2500 pound kingpin or 1500 tongue weight. Vehicle specifications such as headroom etc. can be got by having the dealer configure a truck as you want and print off the specifications following the prices. You'll get about a 7 page print out to take with you. front headroom is 41.0 in. It has gear ratio's and all kinds of specs. Rich

driving a 200 mile range between central and south texas, i saw about 15-20 new chevy's on the road thanksgiving weekend. i see lots of them running around town, and none on lots.

there's your report from this part of the country.

Leaning towards ordering a 3/4 ton 4x4 next week. Anybody reading my late post probably guessed that. Been thinking about that auto trac 4x4 feature. I am not sure I want to use it. I would rather control when i go in and out of 4x4. One concern is that if rear wheel is slipping and it transfers to 4x4 that will be stressful to the system rather than doing it manually in nutral or at slow steady speed. Not much activity here lately. Everyone already got there truck or have given up? Rich

don't worry about extra stress on the system. first of all, the exact moment rear wheels start to spin, the front wheels will engage. if you think that the rear will be spinning, the front sitting still, and then all of sudden the front gets thrown in gear... they design them much better than that.

also there has to be some sort of clutch to engage and disengage the power going to the front, so will absorb any shock to the system anyway.

Called GMC today They said everything is on hold till further notice having problems !! Said it might be febuary before I get my seirra 2500 Theres plenty of 1500s on the lots around here I'am getting tempted maybe get a Z71 with 5.3 373 rear? Was really looking forward to that 6.0 with 4:10 rear
  • RichinKsRichinKs Member Posts: 412
Dave40 are you talking just about the 3/4 tons? Or all trucks? Wednesday my Chevy dealer who had quite an assortment of 1/2 tons, told me to order a 3/4 ton now may not deliver till April. Thats around 3 1/2 months. May still go ahead and start negotiating with 2 dealers here. .... cdean, yea, I guess they wouldn't make something that would cost them a fortune in warranty work. ...... Will be looking at a 3/4 ton 4X4 LT. My wife saw an LS with leather and that was that. I kind of liked it too. The LT has so many options on it there aren't many left to select from! I guess Z85 Firm ride, G80 Locking diff. (hope that bottle neck will clear shortly), GT5 4.10 axle, NZZ skid plates, Z82 HD trailering, and UY2 trailer wiring will do me in.... Rich

The girl at GMC said all trucks on hold as of yesterday.I'am not sure she knew what she was talking about though! So I caled back hour latter and a man told me about
restrictions as of nov.19th I allready heard them before No limmited slip on 1500s no sportsides No snow packages no electric seats and a bunch more. Still waiting till next friday to check with dealer . supposed to be built week of DEC.7th
  • kent123kent123 Member Posts: 61
Checked w/ Chev re: the G80 (locking diff) option on my LT (build date 12/14). They replied by E-mail today that my truck would include it. I was told by Chev Customer Asst eariler this week by phone that customer orders which included G80 would get it, but that dealer stock orders would not due to limited supply of parts at this time.

I expect deliv just after the annual celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord.

I do have several 800 numbers in literature, but what number do I call if I order my Chevy truck in the next few days to check status? I have seen reference to this several times on the list. What info will I need to find out about my specific truck? ...... Rich

I've seen Silverado 1500s at the dealers with the G80 locking differential. I'm not sure where all these rumors (lack of) are coming from.

I've ordered THE TRUCK. I made it simple. I wanted the Pewter LT z71 they use in the commercials. I expect to get it in January. Fortunately, I'm in no rush. I have an excellent Minnesota Winter car in the Subaru Legacy Outback. I just want to go back to pickups (since 1976 other than the Outback) and my needs won't "pickup" until this Spring when I'll need to haul and build a deck.

After reviewing my Silverado order, the only factory option I passed on was the cellular phone and remote microphone provision. I'm curious. What exactly is it? Would I set my mind at ease adding it? It is only $50 and I do have a digital phone.

I ask because the last three vehicles I've bought I've compromised in some way that gnawed on me through the whole ownership period.

I've been reading all the posts as I want to order a new sierra. Would really like to hear from new sierra/silverado owners. Are there problems? Is that the reason for the shutdown on the assembly line? I kinda wonder about buying a first year model...

    Davydd:

I felt the same way after I ordered my truck I found out that I could have added the outside mirrors that are heated and are self dimming for
30 something dollars. After I placed the order I found out what they were and wished I had gone ahead and added them.

What I am curious about, and maybe our salesman friend can answer this, if my order is on hold
can I add items and if I did would this cause any problems like push my order back further down the list or hold up my order any longer than it already is? I think I will just leave things as is but curious!

What does it mean that Extended Cab LT option restricted? I could understand limited or hold. I am suspecting it means limited availability. Maybe a longer delivery. The only real difference between it and an LS with leather is the bucket seats are different. Maybe the seats are in short supply? the 12-16 week delivey is alot shorter than I've heard elsewhere. Rich

I changed my order from the Firm Ride to z71 along with other minor adjustments after I saw the exact pickup I wanted that came in to the dealer. The z71 requires bigger tires and it made the truck look better in my opinion. Hey, this is a vanity shot on my part--one of my numerous midlife crises. ;)

I have heated mirrors and seats on my Subaru Outback. They aren't gimics. The heated mirrors are a godsend in the morning during the winter if you leave your vehicle outside. I wonder how they sell in Miami.
