Received allocation (albeit with certain restrictions) on November 24th (@ 6 weeks) A build date of the week of January 11 (@ 13 weeks) Tentative delivery: January 29th (a total of 15 weeks.)
Chevrolet Motors continues to offer their dealers a tentative 12 week delivery schedule, which is relatively accurate when you factor in Holiday shut-downs. Well, at least now there's a light at the end of the tunnel...
The lack of a 4th door is going to be a bother for me. I really looked that over last night and getting stuff into and out of the back seat from the driver's side requires a little more effort than I prefer (this one had 6-way power seats). It seems to me that I'm pretty well going to have to walk around even to put grocery sacks or anything else back there. Even if the 3rd door was just on the driver's side, it would work much better for me.
Regarding the 2000 model (which everything I read says will have the 4th door), any guesses as to when one would be able to order those? Should I assume that they will be available next fall and that dealers will start taking orders in June or July?
I will probably make one more pass this week at the chevy/gmc dealerships but will start looking for a Ford truck. Seems availability and incentives will make this a deal. May not like the look of the Ford, but with a truck it's what under the sheet metal that counts.
The term "drive wheel" is a misleading term. On a 4x4, all wheels are "drive wheels".
A differential is set up to allow the two wheels to turn at different rates so you won't put too much stress on the axles with a sharp turn. There is no differential between the front and rear axles on 4x4's, that is why they don't recommend driving on dry pavement with it in 4 wheel drive. This gearing in the differentials works great on dry pavement, and sends equal power to both wheels. The problem comes when one wheel is on something slippery. This will allow one wheel to slip and rob the power from the other wheel. A limited slip has something like a centrifugal clutch that will brake the spinning wheel and prevent it from robbing the power from the other one.
So, if you have a 4x4 without limited slip, you would get stuck if you had one front and one rear wheel on something real slippery, but with limited slip, you would have to have both rear and one front wheel in something real slippery. If however you have a 2x4 without limited slip, you would get stuck if either rear wheel (assuming rear wheel drive) were on something real slippery.
Your explanation wasn't quite right, but you do come to the right end result.
Anybody know or has had similar experience?
The destination charges and tt&l are non-negotiable, so they are basically part of the invoice price. When you're looking for a price of 'x' over invoice, you're basically looking for a price of 'x' over invoice, plus destination charge and tt&l. Of course, you will want to make sure that the dealer is not hiding any extra charges in these numbers. That's pretty easy to do. The destination charges are listed on this, and other, sites. If the tt&l looks fishy, you can always confirm it with your DMV. If you're getting your own financing, your financial instituation can also tell you the tt&l since they are mailing it to the DMV.
(under the circumstances I'm not holding my breath if you know what I mean)LOL.
This is not an answer to your question but yet another question.
When did you place your order with your dealership that resulted in a build date of Dec 7th? I placed an order in CA on Oct 30th with no update on the status. Just trying to get an idea of where I stand.
Thanks, MT
If the build date you were given was 11/30/98.
that means that it will be built the week of the 30th, it could be built any day up to Friday?
My dealer says that usually the truck is in in about 2 weeks? Lets hope they get it out of there before they shut down for the holidays (I understand around the 20th til Jan.). Good luck!
What did you order? I ordered a Z71 extended cab,
sportside, leather and all on 10/5/98, preferenced on 10/12/98 and have been told the sportsides are still on hold as of 11/16/98? Chevy says to call back in a few weeks. Guess I will be getting it in January or later??
jxyoung is right about all build dates being on monday. My truck had a build date of 11/2 (mon), was built on 11/6 (fri), released to the transport company on 11/7 and delivered to the dealer on 11/16. My dealer said that the transport companies have 12 days to deliver the truck to the dealer or pay inventory (or something) tax. Call GM customer assistance on 12/8 and they will probably tell you when the truck was built and when it was released to the transport company. Be patient, You'll LOVE the truck!!
There are some chat areas at the Fourwheeler site. I've not been in the Chevy area, so I can't vouch for it, although I have occassionally been in the Ford F-250/350 chat area. There was a guy hanging out in their who was an engineer for Ford, so he was pretty helpful. It might be worth a look to see if the Chevy area is any good. I think you have to go into the Tech area and then it breaks down into Manufacturer. The website is www.fourwheeler.com.
There are two other truck mag sites, but I don't know if there are chat areas. www.truckworld.com is one. I believe the other one is www.offroad.com.
I can say that my enthusiasm has died in the last month since they said the sportsides are on hold and are not sure when they will start production on them.
Come on you guys that have gotten "The Truck" give us some feedback!
1) Do any of you w/ chevy trucks on order have a similar experience?
2) Has anybody else been told this information and has anyone w/ these options recieved their truck lately?
I placed my order on 10-14-98 and have a build date of 12-7-98. Keep in mind though,as per my earlier post, I am unclear how chevy's new system works. My dealer says he changed two of his allocations to fit my orders. Is this the way the system works now or did he do me a favor?!!?
confused and anxious in Montana.
I did take one out for a 15-mile spin, and it drove very nicely. I'd still wait for next year's 4-door model though.
Bob
I ordered it with the G80 locking differential. I have heard various tales about what might happen to that portion of the order. One sales guy told me that Chev. was simply building and shipping trucks w/o this option even when it had been ordered by the customer. I e-mailed their customer assistance site tonight to check on whether or not they have done this on mine.
If (after waiting almost 3 months just to get a build date) Chev dropped an option from my order without my OK,I will be fed up with GM to the point that I will promptly begin looking for one of those Ford Superduty crew-cab short beds that my wife thinks are so cute.
driving a 200 mile range between central and south texas, i saw about 15-20 new chevy's on the road thanksgiving weekend. i see lots of them running around town, and none on lots.
there's your report from this part of the country.

don't worry about extra stress on the system. first of all, the exact moment rear wheels start to spin, the front wheels will engage. if you think that the rear will be spinning, the front sitting still, and then all of sudden the front gets thrown in gear... they design them much better than that.
also there has to be some sort of clutch to engage and disengage the power going to the front, so will absorb any shock to the system anyway.
restrictions as of nov.19th I allready heard them before No limmited slip on 1500s no sportsides No snow packages no electric seats and a bunch more. Still waiting till next friday to check with dealer . supposed to be built week of DEC.7th
I expect deliv just after the annual celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord.
THEY SAID PRODUCTION HAS STOPED ON ALL SEIRRAS 1500 and 2500 as of yesterday NO REASONS GIVEN ! WHAT THE PUCKS GOING ON HERE YOU MUCKING [non-permissible content removed] WIPES!!!
I've ordered THE TRUCK. I made it simple. I wanted the Pewter LT z71 they use in the commercials. I expect to get it in January. Fortunately, I'm in no rush. I have an excellent Minnesota Winter car in the Subaru Legacy Outback. I just want to go back to pickups (since 1976 other than the Outback) and my needs won't "pickup" until this Spring when I'll need to haul and build a deck.
I ask because the last three vehicles I've bought I've compromised in some way that gnawed on me through the whole ownership period.
I felt the same way after I ordered my truck I found out that I could have added the outside mirrors that are heated and are self dimming for
30 something dollars. After I placed the order I found out what they were and wished I had gone ahead and added them.
What I am curious about, and maybe our salesman friend can answer this, if my order is on hold
can I add items and if I did would this cause any problems like push my order back further down the list or hold up my order any longer than it already is? I think I will just leave things as is but curious!
production holds is out. Not sure if this is for November or looking into December?

I have heated mirrors and seats on my Subaru Outback. They aren't gimics. The heated mirrors are a godsend in the morning during the winter if you leave your vehicle outside. I wonder how they sell in Miami.
