well, I made my little trip up to Laurel, to hit the discount liquor store. Turns out I didn't save much on gas...$3.059 per gallon versus $3.099 down here, for 87. I did save about 4 bucks per case of beer though. So I bought three! That oughtta be worth the 20 extra miles I drove. :shades:
....market speculators are at it again as the price is again rising. Rocks must be aging somewhere in the world, or there's fears of someone growing a hang nail, or the wind is out of the wrong direction. Who knows? It's the same ol' story; they panic for no reason, we pay
Want to raise prices. Find some world event that can be written as boding ill for the peace in the world where or near where oil is pumped.
Use gullible news writers with faxes about doom and gloom. News writers put story into form for talking head to read with and-of-world-possible look on her face. Instant propaganda machine for oil cartels.
It's better than actually looking for news around the area to report on radio and TV. They don't have to pick up their donuts and styrofoam coffee cup to go out and look for news.
It seems very clear to me why prices are going up -- demand is increasing at a ferocious pace now that China is poised to pass Japan as the #2 largest market of cars. They do have 1.3 billion people there, you know.
Like it or not, the end days are approaching for oil, and we squandered a good 30 years keeping our heads in the sand.
I saw a segment on the news this AM about GM pursuing the development of hydrogen powered vehicles. They said they should have these vehicles in the showrooms 10 years from now. I wonder how high the price of gas will go in the meantime?
....can our economy absorb? I think we're almost at the breaking point now. Will our fearless governmental leaders allow our economy to completely collaps before they do something?
The gas pricing has two factions each who benefit from higher prices. The current administration has many friends in the oil business who benefit from the huge profits, allegedly to help fund searching for more oil and fuels. The Minority party benefits from higher prices with more unrest with current administration for November's elections. Otherwise, IIHO the pressure from the Minority party would have been on to do something about oil prices. But they have an interest in an oppressed, poor populace voting against the president et al in November.
Since the discussion is gas prices this is on topic.
Too our local prices went from 3.05 to 2.95. Guess they've decided the Korean guy isn't going to have a missile make it to US mainland any time soon so they can reduce the price a little.
...the Sunoco at Rhawn and Verree in NE Philly has Regular pegged at $3.05, Plus as $3.10, "premium?"91 at $3.15, and "ultra?"93 at $3.25. Funny how much trouble a little Korean guy with funny hair shooting bottle rockets into the ocean can cause. Gee, I didn't North Korea was such a major supplier of petroleum.
...but he ain't stupid. If he hit Japan with one of those missiles and it was armed with a warhead, North Korea would be hit with such a fierocious retaliatory strike it would be obliterated. If he was that psychotic and retarded, I believe Seoul would be his most likely target.
Hi everyone. I live in southern Fairfield County in Connecticut - so far around our town, a gallon of regular is going for anywhere from $3.21 to $3.39. In Stamford, I've seen regular going for around $3.47 or so.
Don't even ask about premium, I don't think I can count that high.
What's so scary is that I am about to buy a new car this month - a Mazda CX-7 - and I don't think it can take regular. Oh well, such is life!! I drive about 300+ miles a week to work so I've certainly had to adjust my budget for other expenditures accordingly as gas prices continue to rise. On the weekends, my husband and I now plan very carefully how to run our errands, so that we're making the most efficient use of the car.
I know we still pay a lot less per gallon than folks in Europe, but it still hurts!
I hope you're being sarcastic, Meateater! Not everyone in the state of Connecticut is a gazillionaire! Yes, there are lots of outrageously wealthy people who live and work in this state, but once you get away from certain areas, there's plenty of farmland and rural areas and plain old small, terrific, charming little towns with regular, normal working folks.
I work very hard at a job I love, as does my husband. We're very fortunate to own our home and we are planning carefully for our retirement and as well as for our son's education. We keep close track of our money and how we're spending and saving it. All I'm saying is that the price of gas has affected us, as I'm sure it has everyone else. So please - no more wisecracks about Connecticut. We're all in this together.
Let's keep to reporting prices rather than discussing politics and possible reasons for the rise. We've got other Auto News topics in which that conversation would fit better, and not clutter up the pricing discussion. Thanks!!

...I remember seeing when I was about 14 years-old was a comedy montage about the 1970s shown on network TV in December 1979. They showed the devolution of a gas station.
1970: Guy pulls up in a beautiful red 1970 Buick LeSabre convertible. The price of fuel is 31 cents. It's a full-service station and the dapper attendant in a snappy pressed uniform and cap thoroughly goes over the car - checks the oil, lubes the chassis, cleans the glass, vacuums the interior, checks the tire pressure, tops-off the radiator, fills the tank, etc. The the attendant, full of grease and oil asks, "Anything else sir?" The customer says, "No." And the attendant says, "That'll be $4.00. Thank you! Come again!"
1975: Guy pulls up in a yellow 1975 Camaro. The price of fuel is 65 cents. A sign on the gas station reads "Mini-Service." The customer asks for help, and the surly, unshaven attendant in a wrinkled, dirty uniform sitting on a stack of tires reading a newspaper tells the customer to cram it. The customer gets mad and says, "What about your sign that says 'mini service?'" The surly attendant barks back, "That means I'll serve you if you're a midget, otherwise, bug off!" The customer threatens the attendant and then the attendant grudgingly fills the man's car and wipes his dirty sleeve across the windshield smearing it with grease, "That'll be $10.00! Pay up!"
1979: Guy pulls up in a white VW Rabbit. The price of fuel is $1.49. There is no attendant as the place is now self-serve. The man doesn't know how to work the pump and fumbles aimlessly with nobody to help him.
About $ 2.90 for regular, $3 for mid-grade, and $ 3.10 for premium. This is in Cocoa Beach area.
A "perfect" new vehicle for today's gas prices (just saw one yesterday. MSRP close to $ 50K):
Dodge Ram 1500 SRT-10 quad cab pickup. Viper V10 engine with 500 HP. 4 Speed auto transmission. Sticker mileage: 9 MPG city, 12 MPG highway. Requires premium fuel. Realistically, when driven aggressively, you will never see double digit mileage in this truck.
Who do they make these dumb vehicles for? This makes Hummer look like a Geo Metro in comparison.
The higher the crude oil prices, the higher the profits for Exxon-Mobil and other large oil companies. They would love it if crude was selling for $ 300/barrel, as their profits would roughly quadruple. It is unfortunate that US has done so little to develop alternate energy sources. And rest assured that Bush and his oil friends will not impose any price controls on gas unless the country simply comes to a standstill.
Crude oil prices almost hit $ 76/barrel today. (42 gallons in a barrel, not 55 as some may think).
So brace yourself for another 20-30 cent/gallon price increase. It is coming VERY SOON - to a gas station near you. And do not forget - we are already into the next hurricane season. This means that a hurricane could hit and damage oil refineries somewhere. And even a low probability of a hurricane hit is already a good enough reason to raise the gas prices again. SOOOOON!!!!!!!
I just paid $2.99 for regular, at Shell. The independents were ranging from $2.95 to 2.97 (yeaterday)-they are now at 3.02-3.05. Brace yourself-this is just the beginning-my town wants higher taxes to pay for school bussing-and everything that arrives by truck is going up! I can't imagine what gas at mainas is at-probably over $6.00. I am begiining to wish I bought a small Honda Civic
In my relatively urban county in NH reformulated gasoline is required at the stations and the prices are about $0.20 higher than where I work in western NH.
I got my 93-octane Getty for $2.93 Wed., and it went up $0.02 yesterday. 87 octane is $2.77 I believe.
I live outside of Nashville, Tn, and our gas pprices are lower than alot of places, i saw it today at 2.73 at home depot fuel station. Im glad I dont live in L.A. or somethin, I thought this was bad, almost sounds like the 70's price above with the VW.
Thecjairman of BP said that he could see oil prices dropping to around $45/barel (barring a hurricane or war in the ME. I hope so-we are in for huge round of inflation! The dollar is sinking like a rock-its down to 1.12 euros.
Hmmm...exchange rate around 89 cents last time I saw...comes to a few pennies over $4/gallon. We'll be there in time, I suspect...and it won't be because of taxes.
Wow, glad my son moved back east from L.A. last December. Gas prices are about as high in NYC, but he doesn't have (or need) a car there, with the extensive subway system.
We're still at $2.68 for the no-name 87 at the car wash (central VA). And Shell is going for $2.72, less than some of the off-brands.
Your lucky. We have to haul that stupid ethanol from the Midwest to taint our gas. So that makes it cost more for CA. It used to be that LA was a bit cheaper than San Diego. Sounds like they are getting our shafting this time.
>We have to haul that stupid ethanol from the Midwest to taint
The legislators receiving financial support from and companies who are manufacturing ethanol at a now higher price (+45%) than ever thank you for the profits, even though it doesn't do anything for gasoline conservation IMHO.
Our prices are down from $3.05 to $2.83 as the lowest in the area. $2.90 is nominal price now. That's stations without ethanol.
Sunoco Regular is either $3.05 or $3.07 dependending on where you go. I filled my girlfriend's LaCrosse yesterday. The needle was slightly below 1/4 full. Took an even $40. Shoot, that used to fill the tank on my 1989 Cadillac Brougham from empty and then some. Girlfriend was happy. Now she can buy lunch at work rather than have to brown bag it.

in ct, governor reinstated some state tax, up to 3.19x x=9.
Roopville, Ga.
Usually Alabama's gas prices are higher, but State of Georgia just raised fuel taxes... We is po' but proud.

The price of fuels in Europe et al is not relevant to the price here. The taxes are different.

Almost directly across the road, Citgo is at $2.91. Go figure!
Meanwhile, not too many miles down the road, an old-fashioned Chevron service station (like where they used to fix cars) has closed its doors.
