Just filled at Costco. $2.66 per gallon. The attendant said he heard it may go as low a 2 bucks. Wouldn't that put sock in some of the doom and gloomers.
I am curious why E85 is following the price of gas down so closely. If they were selling it competitively prior to now. It should not be affected that much by the price of gas. They still need tractors to grow corn. Diesel has not come down as much as gas. Seems fishy to me. Another conspiracy for ya rocky.
My first week in the panhandle about 4 1/2 years ago I saw it snowing at night. By 2 O'clock that next afternoon it was 84' degrees. :surprise:
40-70 degrees is nothing out of the norm for the Tx Panhandle. A typical summer is 54-67 at night and 90-110 in the day. In the Winter the flucuation can be much bigger as I posted in the first paragraph. Last Winter we went from July-December without any precipitation. We are making up for it this summer. It rained very very hard last night.
My wife said gas prices were $2.49 all over town except one station had it for $2.50 she said.
$2.01 to $2.04 has about 10 stations on northeast quadrant that have sunk since yesterday. Prices didn't move for a while but here $2.11 is showing up instead of $2.15. They held up the price for Thursday/Friday payday buyers.
in Willcox, AZ, has 87 no-lead for a meager $2.53/gal.
Keep the good news comin'!
Rocky, do you have any Mustang gas stations there in Texas? Somebody was saying that Mustang is an Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and I think they said Texas, phenomenon. What say you?
Are you gonna root for the Lions or the Cowboys this year, rocky? The Sehawks had to actually try to beat Detroit last weekend. The Lion defense was pretty tough. The offense was weak and ineffectual of Mike Martz'. Here We Go
later on today, including a trip later to Safford, AZ, at the base of Mt.Graham (elev. 10,370 feet). Local prices here in Willcox, AZ, were $2.53 at the Mustang gas station. Mustang and Circle K are always the lowest in town so I'll be looking at their readerboards to get the local ghastly "pulse" first.
Does anyone think that ghastly prices will dip below $2.00/gal for 87 no-lead? Watch that $2.00/gal figure. Some sporadic pricing may dip temporarily below $2.00/gal for 87 no-lead but watch and see that it stays around $2.00/gal for 87 no-lead at the lowest.
Gas is $1.96 at Shell and others along I75 in Cincy area.
Maybe we can find fear with a hurricane in the Pacific or Iran or Lebanon to hype up the news so the gas futures can go up again and companies can raise prices at whim... No wonder the talking heads have been talking about hurricanes in the Pacific. They hyped up the idea this was going to be the worse season for hurricanes in the world's history in 3.5 billion years or whatever...
Maybe they can talk about shark sightings to raise fear and raise prices. Sharks make it dangerous to operate the oil rigs in the Gulf??? Well, maybe people will buy it....
I was near BWI Airport, and that immediate area is normally pretty expensive for gasoline, I guess because they like to nab the people bringing their rental cars back. Still, I saw 87 octane for $2.449 per gallon. I haven't done any driving since then, but I'm going out later tonite. It'll be interesting to see what prices are down to.
$2.33 here in State College. The most amazing thing is that this happened over a home football weekend. The usual best case is that prices here would hold steady while they were dropping elsewhere. When 100,000+ people come into town, they usually need to fil up as they leave. :P
at some local new england stations there is a huge gap between 87 octane and 91+ octane. for example, some mobil stations have a 40 or 50 cents gap. 2.49 for 87, 2.89 for premium. the local sunoco is back to the good old 20 cent gap, 2.45 for 87, 2.65 for supa.
I wouldn't. I wouldn't care if gas went down to ten cents a gallon. I'd still throw the bums outta office especially if the incumbents were influencing the price of fuel to garner votes of easily swayed sheep.
Thanks for the replies guys. And I think your honest rational replies are very representative of a huge % of the folks in this country, both R and D. In other words, the price of gas (while fun to piss and moan about) doesn't REALLY impact how we vote.
Given that, IF THERE WAS A CONSPIRACY, why would 'they' bother dropping prices prior to an election?
I need to make clear the handling of oil prices and the not handling of oil prices for their buds in the business are one of the prime reasons at the federal level that I'm for changes--throw out the bums. At the state level there's overlap and all the corruption there. They also have some sway over the pricing and wouldn't use it. Even Kentucky's state government files some cases for price gouging on gasoline; Ohio, none despite articles in the media.
The station pricing was getting lots of media attention last night and this morning aand then this afternoon the media is pointing out that the stations are going up to $2.249.
I had mentioned this before and been treated as a conspiracy theorist, which I resent, so I'm persenting an example. Notice the 50 or so stations ALL with the same new choice of prices today. Just an accident. They all just got out of bed and decided today was the day to do the "restoration" of prices and they all just decided that most of them would go to $2.249.
Click on link for current pricing. I counted at 6 pm EDT. When you click will determine what you get.
So, with all the media attention, was there any explanation regarding WHY the prices had jumped? (I note that it appears prices in the Dayton area jumped by around 9 cents in the last 24 hours; which appears to be substantially more than in other markets in your area like Cincy or Columbus).
When the prices jump like that, does it happen on random days of the week or is it usually on Mondays?
"I had mentioned this before and been treated as a conspiracy theorist, which I resent, so I'm persenting an example."
One of the traits (IMO) of a conspiracy theorist is that, when they note something odd, they DON'T want to find a simple (rational?) explanation. If the 'odd' thing they noted involves a group (business, industry, etc.) which they already have a distrust for, the 'conspiracy theorist' instead immediately smells a rat. For there on out, all evidence which comes in is massaged to 'fit' the theory. (btw - this trait is BY NO MEANS limited to the left in this country. There are innumerable conspiracy nuts on the right side as well).
You don't want to be 'treated' like a conspiracy theorist? Fine; don't act like one. Have you even considered a rational explanation or, since 'Big Oil' is involved it just MUST be some Machiavellian scheme cooked up between the oil robber barons (thanks fin!) and their GOP lackeys in Congress and in our current 'regime' (thanks fin!).
BTW - if they were lowering the prices before the election for some dastardly purpose, why did the prices jump now, 6 weeks early?
caught part of the nfl pregame show tonight. they were building up the fact that jacksonville's qb leftwich, beat pittsburgh's qb roethlisberger in college, when roethlisberger was playing at MIAMI of OHIO. this is per chris berman. he knows more about football than you. gas prices still dropping, but i'm not sure how low. i didn't drive by the lowest price station today.

The gas prices in the Cincy area are still between $1.99 and $2.10 using the latest 4 hours reports. So the explanation that wholesalers just raised prices in the SW Ohio area and stations around Dayton converge on $2.249 while 20 miles away stations are at $2.08????
Same wholesalers? Same brands. Speedway. Shell. Marathon.
But I do notice several stations there are $2.24 at the top price list within the last hour or so.
...that Ohio had the lowest gas prices at the moment.
Pretty interesting on that Dayton area list...a lot of $2.24's. But right now there's also $2.07, $2.09, and $2.13 for Speedway in Troy, Piqua, & Centerville, respectively.
We're down slightly here today, still being led by Sheetz, to $2.35 for 87 (central VA).
I don't get what you're trying to show? I don't think you have enough information to infer anything from this.
I could see prices being the same or close to the same if: 1) these stations were owned by the same person or distribution company (oil companies themselves don't own the stations, aren't they franchise relationships), 2) stations buying from the same gas distibutor will have the same costs, and 3) yes, if I own a gas station I'm going to watch what the cometition does and adjust my prices accordingly.
Prices haven't moved much in the SW part of NH, still hovering around $2.60 for reg. The more urban areas in the eastern part are running in the $2.40's. A few months ago the E was > than the SW. I think that is due to the sesonal blends of additives that are (or aren't used) in the parts of the state.
Of the four major brands, Sunoco has the smallest gap between 87 and 93. Here in DE, the variance is only 25 cents, with 87 2.34 93 2.59. Other brands like BP, Shell, or Exxon/Mobil, has a gap of 35 cents to 52 cents.
89 is no longer on the sign, but I'd assume it's $2.39.
Seems as though all stations here are back to the usual 10-cent gaps between the octane levels; just a month or so ago, the gap had been as great as 40 cents between 87 and 93.
yes, if I own a gas station I'm going to watch what the competition does and adjust my prices accordingly.
Yep, that's what goes on here: all stations close to each other have the same (or very similar) price -- a good example being provided by the Chevron, Kangaroo, and BP stations all in a row. Kangaroo lately has been leaving off the last digit from the sign (not counting the 9/10th), but I bet when you pull in, you'll find the price the same as the "big names."
"Yep, that's what goes on here: all stations close to each other have the same (or very similar) price..."
Well, to be completely fair to imidazol, what you describe would explain why stations would go DOWN in price relative to one another (ie. Station 'A' lowers their price and Stations 'B' and 'C' lower theirs to keep pace). It doesn't explain why a large block of stations would jump UP overnight to the same (or nearly same) price.
Personally, I think it has to do with the practices of the local distributors. They may only announce price changes on a weekly basis so that instead of a penny or two difference on a day to day basis, they anounce a $0.10 price hike (or cut) on a weekly basis. All the stations that intend to buy gas in the very near future suddenly hike their prices to some preset level relative to the wholesale price. Since the wholesale price probably doesn't vary more than .01-.02 between the distributors, suddenly all the stations served by those distributors are within a very narrow range.
rorr: It doesn't explain why a large block of stations would jump UP overnight to the same (or nearly same) price.
me: well if we own stations and we both buy gas for $2.40/gal and sell it for $2.50/gal, if you raise your price to $2.55/gal, I might just copy it. Why? To make $0.15/gal instead of $0.10/gal! The risk is people go elsewhere. Other stations may raise their price $0.05 also, or the may not - wanting to take our business. Economics 101. Each business is trying to maximize their profit, but their is competition preventing it from becoming excessive. Gouging occurs when their is no competition, or the competition that there is all enter an agreement to set a price. You could say that is similar to the difference between Involuntary Manslaughter and Murder 1.
the local Citgo was down to $2.459 (with the 4 turned around backwards) per gallon for 87 octane. Shell is down to $2.549 I think.
And while this article gives me hope, I'm not going to place any bets on it. Call me a masochist, but I kinda hope that gas DOESN'T go back down to $1.15 per gallon. If it does, we're only going to get sloppy and wasteful again, and it'll only delay the inevitable.
On the plus side, it would be nice to be able to fill up my Intrepid or truck for under 20 bucks again.
I can agree with that. If gas hit $1.15 there'd be a wave of new school-bus sized SUVs hitting the market in under a year, no doubt.
I've been so conditioned by these legitimate market forces at work, that if I can get decent premium (read: Chevron) for under $3, I'm pretty happy. Of course, I have a short commute and have always combined errands, even when prices were half of today.
Shoot, I recall a lady who had a V-10 Ford Excursion and it cost her $80 to fill the tank back in 2000. I guess you'd have to take a mortagage out to fill it today. I sure hope lower gasoline prices don't compel idiots to go out and buy outsized SUVs. Some people have the memories of cats.
Gas prices in some areas have sagged again to $2.05. Others holding at stations at $2.249. Will the prices rise at many stations on the old pattern of every Thursday +/- having the prices rise for the Thurs/Fri paychecks putting gas in.

Regular and mid grade down 4 cents from last week, premium unchanged. Must be some kind of supply and demand.
regular = $2.149
middle = $2.349
premium = $2.599
There is still the humungous price difference between regular and premium at all locations around here (in this case a staggering 45 cents/gallon).
the local sunoco is back to the good old 20 cent gap, 2.45 for 87, 2.65 for supa.

Results on these cases (were they able to show 'gouging' occured)?
Were the cases filed against individual stations, distributors, or who?

In this case we are in 100% agreement. Think of the message sent if EVERY incumbent, on both sides of the aisle, were to lose.
