This is what my dealer said about the alarm. If someone tries to start the truck without the key the fuel pump is disabled. The steering columns are redesigned so it's not as easy to break in and turn the ignition. When the doors are locked with the remote and are opened without the remote or key the alarm goes off, horn honks and lights flash. In the owners manual it tells you how to test this. Roll window down, shut door, lock with remote. When you reach in thru the open window and try the door handle the alarm goes off. Thats all I know about it. Seems plenty for me. I'm not going to get an after market alarm.
Choosing the color was the hardest thing for me. I looked at the colors in the catalog and on the floor, and thought about it for weeks. Then changed my mind 3 times on the way to the dealer. Finally chose onyx black with medium oak. Positively, I think you should choose med gray if you go with the light Pewter. The graphite is very dark. I spent some time in a light Pewter model with the med gray, and was awestruck by how perfectly it blends with the exterior. You can't make a bad choice really. Some other combos I like include the two-tone indigo blue upper with sunset gold metallic on the rocker panel. Or same except dark carmine red with sunset gold. I think sunset gold solid with medium oak would be awesome, especially if someone made a tasteful rosewood applique overlay for the dash.
Help..... I just ordered a new 99 Sierra Ext cab 4x4 with the 5300 eng. I have since heard that because of the new 3 piece frame, the payload capacity is only 350 lbs. Problems of an out of balance frame is reportedly the penalty for exceeding 350 lbs limit. Any truth to the reports???????
You want the best looking truck in YOUR town? I bought two for my company, one is charcoal grey top with black onyx bottom. MINE is light pewter top with black onyx bottom and it's awesome!!! I put on the black GMC mudflaps and a black Yakima custom rail mounted rack for my canoe, windboard, skis, snowboards and bikes and it even looks better. You can have it too! (just don't come to Montana...HA!) Does anyone have any experience with Rhino Liner bed liners or any other options?
You know.... I started out with just a regular cab/shortbox with the 4.3 V6. Fortunately for me, GM's ordering system was down for a while, but it gave me a chance to look around at different models and configurations. Well, I ended up finalizing my order last night and it will be placed today. I ordered an extended cab 4WD with the 5.3 V8 and Z71 package. I drove one of these last night. I was so impressed with the ride. Now, I have a Honda Accord that rides like a dream. But, this truck was so smooth and we went over a lot of rough terrain and potholes. Also, that 5.3L engine is incredibly smooth. The color scheme I ordered was Victory Red on top and Light Pewter Metallic on bottom. I'm not a red guy, but i saw this combination at another dealer and it was absolutely stunning. Check out this combo if you can. It was next to an all pewter one, a blue with pewter bottom and all black. It really stood out (in a nice way). I did get the graphite interior which contrasts nice with the Victory Red. I can't wait to get it.
Reading the comments on colors reminds me of our decision. In the past It always seemed like our problem was finding a color we liked. This year we found there were 4 colors we liked. Finally settled on the Sunset Gold Metalic with Light Oak interior. Also changed an went with solid color after having two tone on the last two Chevy's. Been 38 days waiting on Allocation! ...... Rich
Actually, two tone paint does not add any re-sale value on this truck unless the potential buyer really loves that two-tone color scheme. For me, I'd rather save the $190.00 extra for two-tone paint and get upgraded tires, for example. Around Wisconsin, two tone paint might look a little different, but for re-sale value, it does not matter. I finally took my 1999 Silverado in for warranty work on my clunking bucket drivers seat and my center console rattling and after 3 visits to two different Chevy dealers, they have fixed both problems. The bucket seat needed lubrication in the track and seat reclining latches and a faulty internal component that rattled in my CD player that comes built into the center console was causing the excessive rattling noise. Boy, what a relief! I now have a solid truck to drive! These two problems I have had in over 3,000 miles of driving which DID NOT get fixed by an authorized GM non-selling dealer. THAT DEALERSHIP REFUSED warranty work since I did not buy it there (more convenient for me) is definitely going to hear from me again, the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU, the GM Customer Assistance Center, and anyone else who handles dealership complaints. Enough complaining, time to drive my SOLID truck yet again!
Speaking of upgrading tires, does anyone know if it is important enough to upgrade tires either to P265/75R16 or LT265/75R16 tires vs. the standard p245/75R16 tires. The dealership I talked to has no clue what brand of tire is going to come in on these trucks when ordered since they say it can change depending on what stock the plant has in at the time. It seems to me that the extra $200 or so just to upgrade (not buy outright) tires is ridiculous. Does 'big' tires really make that much difference to consumers who buy these trucks? It seems at least in Wisconsin that everyboy who orders and buys these trucks wants the 'Big' tires? My other question involves the upgraded $70.00 option for cast aluminum wheels vs. standard stainless steel mag wheels. I know cast alumninum wheels will not rust, but to me, the standard stainless steel bright wheels looks sharper (might rust over time though?) and isn't stainless steel stronger than cast aluminum? Any thoughts on tires and wheel choices out there? I'm interested in finding out what others think!
We all have different reasons for the options we order. Some on this list seem strictly interested in the finantial asspect. Will I get return on this option at trade time? Others go stricktly for the apperance / function of the options, Practicallity be darned. But most I suspect are a mixture. Big tires. I have had them on my last two trucks strickly for the looks. I personally don't like the "looks" of a truck with small tires. Same with two tone. If I'm spending nearly $30,000 for a vehicle, I'll order what appeals to me for what ever reason. Whats a couple of hundred more or less. But thats why dealers have so many options, we all have our own thing and I'm happy for anyone on this list thats getting the options they want. ......... Rich
After waiting over five months I finally received my extended cab LS, 5.3, Z71, 4x4 w/locking differential two weeks ago. The truck has been great except for a few standard options I wish it didn't have. Automatic night lights and locking doors. I know you can temporarily shut the lights off by pushing the parking break with the engine off and then starting it. Has anyone had their dealer say they can disable this and the auto door locks? Chevrolet told me they could change the locks but my dealer says they are having a hard time getting that information from chevrolet on how to do it.
Also, has anyone had the "service engine soon" light come on and stay on yet? Mine did while pulling my snowmobiles this weekend. It goes in friday for service. I do like the fact that it pulled the trailer 75 mph on the freeway with ease. The horses weren't shy drinking though!
I went with the light pewter metallic with the dark graphite interior. The combo is pleasing to me. I went for the graphite over the gray and oak because the steering wheel, console inserts, etc. match the color; and I was told the graphite reflected less off the windshield. I'm not so sure about this last but I bought into it. If you have the Silverado brochure you can see my interior on page 12. The oak is on page 38/39.
The ads use the oak interior with the pewter metallic exterior. I doubt you could go wrong with any of them. My second choice was Sunset Gold and Oak. I might have chosen that if I had had a chance to see it. The end decision was advertising got to me, z71 and all.
I have over 500 miles on my new Silverado this week and I can find no faults, fits, rattles or blemishes so far. Probably the best off the dealer lot vehicle I've ever bought. The truck was built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada--previously knocked online here for quality.
I couldn't wait until the weekend after picking up the truck because I commute this time of year in the dark to and from. I drove down to Owatonna, MN to Cabela's Saturday. That's sort of a Mecca trip for pickups and SUVs to a 100,000 sf hunting and fishing store filled with over 700 stuffed animals. The parking lot has over 800 stalls and it was filled. You would be hard pressed to find a standard automobile in the lot. All truck owners should go to Cabela's. They have one in Nebraska too.
Well anyway, to end this story, I stopped for coffee at a McDonald's drive up. Drinking coffee on a concrete freeway with control joints and the z71 suspension can be an adventure. :-) I stated before the z71 is not jarring but it is stiffer and you don't really notice it until you have coffee in hand.
I love my Pewter LT Ext. Cab 2WD that I got just before Christmas. I now have about 1600 miles on it, getting 15 around town and 18 on the road (at 75-80 mph, 4 occupants and light luggage).
The one nagging problem with this otherwise great truck is the tires. Mine came with 255 70 R16's made by General. At first, I noticed a vibration at about 60 mph. The dealer tried re-balance on all 4 tires twice, then said they'd given up and would order me a whole new set. When I called to check a week later to see if they were in, the service mgr. told me to take the truck to a certain independent tire shop to get re-balanced on their supposedly better machine. That shop told me that 3 of my tires were so defective that they could not be balanced. The worst was a whole 9 ounces out of whack!
My next call was to the Chevy service mgr. who told me that they didn't order the tires as his dept. previously promised and that it would now take another week to do so. I ended up having to make a 500 mi. trip yesterday and today with the vibration. I started out loving the truck; I am now very irritated.
Any suggestions? Anyone having any similar problems with new Silverado tires?
Vibrations are very annoying, no question about that. It's not always balance either, as I suspect your tires are seriously out of round, or have a separation of the plys. Once you get a good set, and a good balance, your problems should go away.
they have been a standard feature since 97 or before. The reason that there is a way to shut them off while the engine, is running is that it is illegal to "jacklight" (i.e. spotlight or headlight) deer.
Be kinda sad if you started the engine in the truck to keep warm, and wound up getting it confiscated by the Department of Natural Resources wardens - all because the lights came on automaticly.
My 1999 silverado was ordered yesterday by my dealer. He said that he got a production date of March 1st. This is only6 weeks away. Maybe about 8 weeks by the time it finally arrives. That's pretty quick, isn't it? LS, 4WD, Ext. Cab
Glad to see someone is getting an allocation. Is yours a 1500 or 2500? Anybody out there got an allocation for a 2500 in the last couple of weeks? ..... Rich
Hope your delivery goes faster than mine! Built December 17, Given to transport the following day and still no sign??? Finally they say it left Canada January 11. All I get is it is in transition?????????????????????????
I give up. I just cancelled my 2500 ordered 10/24. The Wheels, Inc. web page (www.wheels.com) industry news says all 3/4 tons and any truck with snow plow package is on hold into February. I never even got an allocation. Maybe I'll wait and maybe I'll get a Ford. I give up on Chevy.
Well, I talked to my dealer again today and verified that my truck has not yet been ordered. So obviously he couldn't give me an order number and I can't call GM to verify a build date. Given that I want an option that is "on constraint" (ZX3 suspension), he is unable to place the order until the constraint is lifted.
He expects that to occur toward the end of February at which time he will be allowed to place an order. He also said that with the new GM order system that he can tell exactly when the truck will be built when he places the order. He anticipates 6 weeks from order to delivery.
I'm not sure what to believe. I'll just be praying for patience between now and then. I'm starting to worry a bit about being one of the first trucks off the line with this suspension. Does anyone know why this option is on constraint?
Dave40 (aka Chevy lover), congratulations. It sounds like you're at the end of the tunnel.
GO with out the ZX3 and get your truck now ! You can alaways upgrade your shocks to Edelebrock IAS Performer shocks 75 bucks each.Thats what I might do if the smooth ride ain't right!
I don't know where you are now in the tire exchange process, but I would insist the dealer exchange your tires for a set of P265/75R 16 WOLs. Sounds like they owe you big time, and this is a better tire configuration for your truck. Insist on Firestone or Goodyear. These are good tires and should more than fix your problem. If the dealer says no, remind him thesetires are standardon the new 99 GM trucks and threaten him with bad customer relations and the fact that you will put the word out if he does not comply. remember, you paid a lot of good money for this truck and demand satisfaction. You may even insist he order a set of new aluminum alloy rims (PF9 - stock number)- at no cost !!! to go along with the deal. Get tough and quit wasting your time with the dealer double talk.
bdon: I'd wait if I were you. If you're planning on a new truck in 2 years, go ahead with the easy options. If you're going to keep it for 5-10 years however, get the one you want. Just my 2cents.
I had a build date of Jan 11. Today spoke with the fleet company I ordered from and was told my 3/4 ton Chevy 4x4 LT should be in this Friday!!! It gets drop shipped at a local dealer. Hope he's right,I ordered it Nov.3rd.Will see...
That is just devastating. Will you receive your deposit back? Are you sure about this decision? I saw a 2500 on the dealers floor about a month back. I bet they are close.
Sent an Email to them a couple of days ago as to when the next update will be. Got an answer yesterday that it will be in less than 10 days. Lets hope no further delays. From what I'm hearing from you guys it looks like things are starting to move on the 3/4 tons! .... Rich
If I order the Silverado with the satndard 245 tires can I put 265 tires on these same rims when the originals wear out? (son;t laugh too hard at this question, I'm a nerdy pharmacist!)
Depends if you got the 1500 or 2500 the 2500 has narrower wheels 6.5 inches that might be to small for the 265s But if you got the 1500 with 7 inch wide wheels it won't be a problem. Your speedometer might be off a few mph but no big deal
On the tire size issue. My dealer told me today if I change tire size they could charge about $30 to hook up and set the tire size in the computer. I would get it done cause I could see where if it throws off mileage, Chevy could void warranty if it is not in their favor?
i was just wondering.. does anyone live close to one of the assembly plants?? Maybe you can go during shift change offer someone a beer or two at the local bar and ask them what the heck are they building in there?? I ordered a 2500 4x4 silverado extended cab long bed on 12/29 and am wondering if they are building these yet...i don't expect any hope of delivery for about 12-16 weeks Hope i am wrong!! if any one has any info on the 2500 ex cab 4x4 longbeds drop me a line !!! thanks.. oh the dealer where i ordered mine from has about 50 1500's in stock!! but never seen a ex cab long bed in either flavor yet..
How does this whole Vin # and 800# work? My dealer told me that my truck will be built the week of March 1st. What numbers do I need to get from him to track my truck's production and delivery? What is the full 800#? Where does this actually connect (GM plant?)
I have the same question as mwinter1, my build week is supposed to be next week. Should my dealer have a VIN number yet? Sold my F350 and my escort and am driving around in my buddie's wife's 'pink' toyota....... Guys at work are giving me (*&#*&%# about driving a 'pink [non-permissible content removed] truck'.........
I noticed earlier that someone posted a comment about "getting the computer changed because of tire size" and I was wondering if others are doing this?
I will be replacing my stock steel rims and tires on my LS Silverado 4x4 with 16 alloy rim and 10.5x31 tire (not certain about the tire size yet?). Is getting the computer updated necessary?
Only if you want the speedometer and odometer to be accurate. I would certainly recommend it and as someone else pointed out the company could use a discrepency as a reason to deny warranty work if you were close to the limit of your available mileage.
So you need a VIN # first. How do you find out if the quoted build date will be delayed? I plan on selling my current vehicle and I'm trying to time it based on the arrival of my new truck.
On that other post, how could GM deny any service under warranty since the alloy rims and tires are an option for that model. I could see if you did something to the vehicle out side the options and guidelines of GM.
Easy. If you order the tires as an option, GM will set the computer properly. If you add them yourself, the computer may not be corrected. It has nothing to do with the wheels themselves, and everything to do with potential fraud (your odometer may be reading 35,000 miles after driving 37,000 miles) to get warranty coverage.
Going from a P245/75R16 to a P265/75R16 will affect your speedometer by about 3.8%. Whether or not that is significant is a judgement by you. On my previous 5.7L LT1 in my Camaro, I had to purchase a $400 Hypertech Power Plus Programmer (tm) to re-calibrate the powertrain control module and speedometer when I changed rear end gears. The (2) Chevrolet dealers I went to were not able to help, nor could a speedometer shop. It is not like on the older mechanical speedometers where they could change the nylon drive gears to re-calibrate. But the speedometer is not the only thing affected. The transmission shift points will be lowered by the same amount, since the 4L60E automatic transmission is electronically controlled. Hypertech may not have a programmer available yet for the Silverado/Sierra LS1 engine. You can check with them, or elsewhere for another way, or just forget about it. If anyone out there still is considering a Silverado/Sierra purchase, the easiest thing to do is buy one with the P265 tires already on.
While the driver information display may be new for trucks, it's been on my wife's '89 Cadillac for years. In reporting oil life index, it seems to weight the number of start cycles more heavily than mileage. And it still doesn't recognize dusty and dirty environments, towing usage, or even know when you add or change oil if you don't reset it each time. And the warranty still says to change the oil at about 3000 miles. So what happens when oil life index reports 0, and the 'change engine oil' message comes up just as the rod punches a hole in your block? No, I'll spend freely on oil changes and preventative maintenance even if it is wasteful. An once of prevention always costs less than a pound of cure.
This isn't a Chevy specific question but this group seems to be well informed and current.
What are people's opinion on getting alloy rims with a clear coat on them. With the clear coat they require little maintenance, basic soap and water. And you have to be careful not to use certain cleaners.
My concern is that the clear coat doesn't last.
With the clear coat the wheel doesn't look as shiny but its a heck of a lot easier to maintain.
Is that 800# system automated or do you have to speak to an actual operator? If I just ordered my vehicle the other day, is there any use to inquiring about it already? I did get a order number and dealer code from my dealer.
Give it a try! I have a feeling they will tell you they in the middle of a computer changeover and ask you to call back later but, who knows give it a try. You will have to push a few 1's if I remember right to get to a customer service rep. Then you will be put on hold for a short time. When the rep. comes on tell they you want to check on an order and give them your order # and dealer code. You will get a preference date etc. They do have limited info but they will know when a build date is scheduled and when it is actually built.
If they say something about the computer swap ask them when they expect to be back online??
