I have a 99 - ext. cab Z71 that is making a hellish clunking noise in the rear end area whenever I drive over any speed bump or encounter a pot hole, etc. I am taking it to the dealer on Monday. I checked the spare tire to make sure it was tight. Anybody heard this or something similar in their truck?

Anyone put the nerf bars on their new 3 door Z71 truck? I am looking for the black and wondering if anyone found a super deal anywhere?

    jxyoung,

I saw the same thing in the owners manual of my Silverado about the anit-theft thingy on the tail gate. When I removed the gate to have the Line-x sprayed in there was no anti-theft thingy. I guess they forgot it on the Chevys

Concerning pulling to the right. My e-mail to chevy reculted in an evasive answer and referred me to the 800 number. When I called them they said they could not give technical answers. I tried to explain that I did not need a technical answer, only if this was done on purpose by Chevy. She again read me their pat can't help answer and referred me to the dealer. I said that if it was built in that you would think it would be mentioned in the owners manual (next to how to open window or other mundane stuff in the manual). Again she read the same answer. So I still don;t know for sure.

Can anyone tell me what it means to have your order "preferenced"?
  • bernie51bernie51 Member Posts: 10
Every time I read this website I learn something. I have 800 miles on my Ext cab 1500 L.S. 4X4 5.3 3.73 rear w/Z71 susp short bed. So Far averaging 15mpg in all kinds of riding. Soon to take a trip from Ashville N.C. to Daytona Fla. so I will be seeing some highway figures for milage. Put in a "Colonel" brand bedliner for $149.50. Have never had trouble with Drop-in liners and couldnt justify the $400.oo spray in price. I found 6 paint blems; little nicks you can feel if you run your finger nail over them. Asked the dealer for a little bottle of touch up paint and he obliged. My truck also has a slight pull to the right. Too bad they wont come clean with info on this phenomenon, either its upposed to do it or not! Weird, whatever the case I'm sure its fixable. My truck has the little piece on the tailgate that necesitates a tool for removal. I guess they left some of them off at the factory. Dealer should be able to get em. All else is just great and I will post upon my return fm Daytona.
  • jxyoungjxyoung Member Posts: 156
According to my dealer an order is "preferenced"
when the factory has pulled the order and checked all items listed on the order. If all items are available they then agree to build the vehicle!
That is preferenced. My order was preferenced 1 week after I placed my order! The thing you have to watch is a dealer that takes your order that does not have an allocation. In reality he has your order sitting in his computer and can't send it to the factory until he gets an allocation.

You do not get a build date when the vehicle is preferenced. After pref. my dealer says it typically takes about 2 to 3 weeks for the build date(could be affected by restricted vehicles or options)? A build date means your vehicle will be built that week, not necessarily on the actual date given. When the vehicle has been built delivery seems to be taking any where from 1.5 weeks in the best case to 7 weeks worst case(Me)!

I will say that this vehicle is worth waiting for!
Don't SETTLE for something else! This is not a dress rehearsal, you only live once!

    Hope this is helpful.

I've noticed the same right-pull in the steering on my Dodge Ram. Since I tend to drive with my left arm on the armrest and use my left hand, this is actually an advantage. The slight oppositional pull gives me better control. However, I was concerned that the alignment might be out - surprising since the truck only has 300 miles on it so far. Now I'm thinking maybe this is something that's being built into the new trucks. I'll be watching to see if you guys come up with an answer.

poolfool: www.edelbrock.com. it has everything from shocks to exhaust to intakes.

bought my oil filter at chevy for $5.20. can't believe the hype! i am getting 15.9 miles a gallon. about 2 mpg more than my doge dakota 3.9ltr.

    Problem!!

I too noticed my truck was pulling to the right and there was shimmy and large amount of bounce in the truck between 55-65 mph. Now I just thought the tires might be out of balance so I took it to the dealer.

Well, the dealer definetly sees the problem and he can't find the source. The tires balanced fine and the alignment is OK but the truck still shimmies and bounces. They are still looking into it. He said they needed to call the factory. Yeaks!

    Anyone else have this problem??

    99 LS 4x4 ext cab 1500 miles.

I'm considering replacing the stock air intake, and exhaust system on my (hopefully soon to be delivered) new 5.3 liter, 3.73 rear-end Z71 Silverado. Talked to salesman today, was informed it wouldn't void the warranty. (Except for the replaced components).
Considering I'm gonna have the air intake and exhaust replaced, and have headers installed who is able to re-adjust or replace the onboard computer chip? (Considering Banks cat-back system, airaid intake and haven't chosen the headers yet)

I really don't need more horsepower, but would love to increase the MPG, since I have to commute alot to and from work everyday.

    Thanks all...

Has anyone changed over their shocks on the 99 Silverado to the Edelbrock IAS performers?

What has been your experience with the changeover?

I drove a stock suspension Silverado and it seemed too soft while the firm ride suspension (not the Z71) seemed too choppy at times.

Are the Edelbrocks, perhaps, just right?
  • jxyoungjxyoung Member Posts: 156
    Bobfox,
I find it hard to believe that changing the chip will not affect the warranty! I can understand the other components you listed, but I would think changing the chip could possibly void the factory
    warranty? Valid or not?
  • bobfoxbobfox Member Posts: 14
1st Dave: How do they know what to set the new chip at?

JxYoung, I didn't think of that, and that is a TOTALLY valid concern!

I guess my question is does the chip need reprogramming or replacing? If so, doesn't what you add/change determine the modifications required? And if the last is correct, how can a "off the shelf" chip replacement properly cover the modifications you make?

    Question:

Has anyone ordered the cell phone prewiring? What exactly did you get and how would that option change the final installation?

Would you have to purchase the phone from the dealer to utilize this?

The manual makes no mention of this option...
  • chevy4mechevy4me Member Posts: 203
Just when my hopes of finding a truck close to what I was looking for were fading I find one with GM buypower online and when I get to the dealer it's actually still on the lot. Not only that there are the two colors I've been looking for on two identically equiped trucks are sitting side by side. So they took the 95 cheyenne 4.3
and I drive of with the 99 Ls extended cab 2wd
5.3 . What a difference . has most options but the cell phone wiring provision whatever the heck that is .

Again, I'll say this. Roads are designed to drain water off them. Thus they are usually crowned in the middle and even those seemingly flat freeways are pitched usually to the outside. So, the pitch of the road itself is going to cause your truck to generally veer right.

Find yourself a nice level two laner in Montana where you can see forever and try driving like the British. You'll probably pull left.

My last commuter mileage was 16.7 mpg with my 99 Silverado 1500LT 5.3L 3.73 rear end. I took a trip up Lake Superior to within 26 miles of the Canadian border (300 miles +) and spent the weekend in snow country. Mileage up was 17.74 mpg. Return mileage was 18.38 mpg. Range back on tank was 377 miles before the low fuel light came on. This is winter driving with that 10% oxygenated gas. I'm satisfied.

I have the 4.10 axle, and I can definitely hear a shrill whine from the rear differential, that comes and goes, centered at 61 mph, and 71 mph. If I close the sliding rear window, I would never have noticed. I have had other cars that had similar gear whines, that gave me normal service. Don't know about this one. Anyone else notice this?
  • 26andrew126andrew1 Member Posts: 93
    Bobfox
If dealer notices that chip is replaced kiss the warrenty good-bye. I agree with quadrunner500 waste of money. Most chips fool the computer in thinking the engine is running cooler than it really is, so then more fuel gets dumped in. I saw an aftermarket device to change shift points and tire size so speedo would read right.( don't remeber where, sorry)

AC/DELCO makes a cell phone. It is used for ON-STAR etc. If the wiring is what I think it is DON'T get it. I THINK it is for a phone mounted inside truck. Spend your money on a phone you can carry with you. Although ON-STAR is cool and am going to get it on my next truck/car.

    DaveK3:

When I ordered my truck, the dealer gave me my order number and told me what week it will be built. I think that is how it works. When they actualy get an order number, GM tells them when this number is in the que.
  • cornhusker1cornhusker1 Member Posts: 22
Just because you have an order number doesn't mean you have a build date. My 3/4 ton extended cab was ordered Jan.18. Got an order number Feb. 2. And now still waiting for a build date. It depends on what you have as options on your truck. It could be as little as power seats holding up your getting a build date. Thats what the dealer told me.

I had a similar problem on my 99 LT 2WD. It came with 255/70 R16 Generals. After re-balancing them twice with no improvement, the dealer sent me to a local tire shop that had a tire analyzer which placed road pressure against the tire during the balance. 3 of the 4 tires were unbalancable!

They then ordered 3 new General tires, two of which tested far out of balance. I finally got fed up and got the fleet sales mgr. (who sold me the truck) to convince the service mgr. that they needed to buy me a different brand of tire. I now ride on 4 Michelin LTX's (same size) that the dealer bought me.

The service mgr. also told me that they have had similar problems with many new Silverados equipped with GOODYEAR tires of the same size.
  • shoozshooz Member Posts: 27
I've the Generals too, on my LT. Smoooooth! It also tracks as straight as any vehicle I've ever owned. In fact, about the only criticism would be the headliner trim not being tucked-in around the rear right window. Other than that,(and the hugeness of the beast,) can't find fault with it!

guys thanks for the info on the gm number.. but it doesn't work anymore!! im bummed! has all kinds of other options to pick from but when you pick the order info number the nice man on the recorded message tells you that the option was discontinued on jan 1...still waiting for my 2500 ordered dec 28......
  • aaron8aaron8 Member Posts: 22
bummer, changed my oil (thanks quadrunner500 for the oil capacity) and found the front differential leaking from the seal. took it in to the dealer and explained to the desk guy about 2 seconds and he blurted out the problem... "front pinion seal". sort of scares me. i didn't even finish explaining the problem and he seemed to know the problem right away. is this common on the Z71's or 4x4's? have appointment for next wednsday, said it take a couple hours to fix. i am now getting 16.7 mpg...driving around town. outstanding!! can't believe that it is even better than the sticker and my V6 dakota. have 1900 miles on it now.

I have them on my Z71 and they seem fine to me.

Which radio do you have? If you have the top of the line 6 speaker radio with cd/tape, you may want to lisen to it a while before replacing the speakers. I find it a very good sound with both good treble and base. My 97 chevy Z71 has that same radio. We all have our own taste but this old rock n roller loves it. I have added a amplified bazoka tube that I bought for my 94 Blazer. It fits under rear seat perfectly. The Blazer had a problem with speaker location. Mounted on top of dash, speakers bounced off windshield glass and even with good aftermarket speakers it had no bass. Also had aftermarket radio. This current Chevy system with 2 speaker in each front door and two in rear seat pillars sounds much better. ......... Rich
  • mtbh2oskimtbh2oski Member Posts: 13
How did you connect the bazooka tube to the stereo?? Was it a pain removing any ot the interior panels?? I have a bazooka tube in my car now and I'm thinking about doing the same thing myself in the new truck.
  • chevy4mechevy4me Member Posts: 203
What size bazooka fits under the back seat 6,8or maybe 10 inch?
I did a 175 mile round trip today so I did a mileage check . It was all highway at about 60 mph average .It took 7 gallons to refill that makes 25 mpg can this be true? I even compared trip miles to miles on a map they matched. I'm impressed . 1500 extended 5.3 and 3.42 rear with no load flat terrain wind calm. Tach was reading around 1700 . also looking for advice on bed mats.
  • jerryb2jerryb2 Member Posts: 14
chevy4me-----sounds a little high to me, but my last tank registered 19.4mpg-----50/50 highway/ city, about 30% of the time with air on, no load, no trailer, conservative driving habits, 5.3L, 3.42 rear end, ext cab, firm ride, toe package.---i am very satisfied too
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Not too uncommon to occasionally find one that leaks in the first 10 to 20 K miles, no big deal. Had the same problem on my '89 Ford, fixed and never returned....
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
The radio in the LS trim, (CD with no tape) has the same 6 speaker arrangement as the top of the line cd/tape, two in each front door, and one on each pillar behind.
  • RichinKsRichinKs Member Posts: 412
I had mine professionally installed, removed (From the Blazer) and then installed again (Z71). On the second installed, jacks were installed so I will probably remove it myself. I have a 6 inch bazooka tube. An eight inch might fit. I doubt if a 10 inch will fit in my 97. The new 99's may have different demensions. Having worked in electronics I have no problem with the hookups. I am more worried about my back and how many chiropractic visits it will take if I do the under dash work myself (G). As for the radio, I do not know if the LS radio has the same sound quality and/or speakers of the radio I have. I would guess the speakers are the same as manufacturers try to minimize the number of parts they need. The LS can be upgraded to that radio if you have bucket seats. ........ Rich

Had a Pace Edwards rolltop cover put on my LT today. Pretty nice and a practical alternative to a fiberglass tonneau cover. Cost was $649 installed. The black cover looks good with the Pewter paint job and even makes the tailgate protector look like it belongs.

Gee, I REALLY wish now that Chevy had offered a lockable tailgate like the Ford has. While they're at it, steering wheel radio controls would have been appropriate for at least the LT version of this otherwise great truck.
  • kent123kent123 Member Posts: 61
Also, put in a carpet bedliner to go with my rolltop cover. I like it.
  • chevy4mechevy4me Member Posts: 203
Jerryb2 I did another 140 mile trip all freeway with a bit more foot in it 70 -75 mph got 17.1 mpg Averaging the two trips comes to 20.8 mpg .
What is different between the standard ride and what I have the firm?
  • cdeancdean Member Posts: 1,110
    kent123

you can buy a little aftermarket "leash" for your tailgate that has a lock on it, and it only takes minutes to install. i've seen a few on friends trucks, but can't remember where they bought them right offhand...

I need to get a bed mat but was wondering if they wear down the paint and if the thicker ones are worth the extra money. Also does moisture remain under and can this lead to rust? I've been quoted $95 for one that is 3/8 inch thick is that about right? thanks

I just installed a pair of Air Ride (tm) pneumatic helper springs on my 1500 long-bed. Installation took about 4.5 hours, and I did the work myself. It doesn't give you more payload, just lets you level it out when you carry up to the maximum. There is a separate air line to each one, so you can level out side-to-side if you wish. The air pressure adjustment range is 10 to 100 psi. Even with the air-pressure set at the minimum of 10 psi, the cargo box is raised on the frame about 1/4 to 3/8's inch. Each line has a shrader valve for filling. I mounted each one into a hole inside the wheel well fender lip. There is plenty of clearance in the wheel well of the Silverado for installing these. If you had to replace one, you can do it without even removing a wheel. It would take about 3 minutes with simple hand tools. Mounting the brackets was the hardest part, but is straightforward. You can buy these with on-board air compressors, gauges etc. I chose to keep it simple, with short hoses to minimize the potential for air-line leaks. I carry a bicycle pump in my tool box. It is all you need. A few strokes and you watch the bed levitate like David Copperfield. It would be great for someone who occasionally uses a slide-in camper, and doesn't want the stiff ride of added-in leaf springs. It would also be good if your trailer has a heavy tongue weight on the hitch. How does it feel? Well, it's like riding on air!

I placed an order with my dealer for a 1500 Silverado LS extended cab short-bed with a 5.3L engine during the second week of February. I'm assuming the order has been placed with GM since the dealer recently gave me an order # (five letters, one numbers), but he did not have a build date yet. Is this normal?

I read through some of the past posts and it seems that people were waiting quite a while for their trucks. Does anyone know if they have started to speed things up and/or how long it typically takes?
    Thanks,
    Mike

I own a 99 Chevy also. Am getting rid of it already. The dealer even gave me a call 3 months ago and I am getting about $1,000 less than what I paid for it and driving it for six months with the option to sell it outright and maybe even make money on the truck. New 99 Chevy on order and dealer told me 8-10 weeks, no longer to get in. My new 99 is going to be less loaded with no power seats, bucket seats, fog lamps, two tone paint, and no white lettered tires. These options alone is going to save me about $1,000. I cannot stand the bucket seats since like a few other postings, they get in the way and are too small with the fold down armrests taking up too much space (I'm 225 lbs.) and they get in the way if you have a carrying bag with straps. The straps always catch on the fold down armrests. Also, the power seats are not worth the money since if you want to reach in the back Ext. Cab, the power seats take too long to go up vs. the manual lever that actually slides the seat forward with one press of the lever. I too have noticed a few problems on my 99 Chevy concerning a clunking noise coming from the rear end by the tires over bumps, etc. It may be the shock is bad? Also, has anyone else felt the new 4 wheel disc brakes being spungy when pressed down firmly. Even at a stop sign at 0 m.p.h., when I press down even harder on the brakes, mine makes a squeshy noise that feels like the brakes are bad? Anyone else have this braking noise/feel?

Chevyforme......I do not use my truck for work. My usual payload is either fishing gear or golf clubs...but I bought my mat for my truck on sale at K mart for $28. It is plenty thick, how thick I'm not sure....You just have to trim for the end for you specific length of box you have...this one can be used with the long box also. Fits fine!
