One of the options listed for the Silverado 1500 is Rear Axle, Locking Differential. I think I know what a locking differential is on the front end of a 4x4, but I've never heard of it being on the rear end. What is this feature. Is it like a limited slip rear end?
  • rogue42rogue42 Member Posts: 11
The combo of an Ext cab & long bed are hard to find. You will almost never see one in a 1500 but you may have better luck since looking for a 2500. You might try a dealership in a rural area or one that sells a lot of work trucks instead of one that sells mostly to city folks. I had to order mine to get it the way I wanted. I actually had 2 salepeople telling me that no I didn't want a long bed & ext cab. It would hurt my resale value. I know what I want! And he kept arguing the point..... He just wanted to sell one off the lot instead of ordering one.

There's a 2500 Ext cab long bed 4X4 on the lot where I ordered mine, Watson Chev in Tucson Az. It's an LS with oak custom cloth 40/20/40 in Dark Carmine Red, Auto-trac, no Trailering Pkg on it though!

Dave-How are the fog light housings holding up to the 50 watt bulbs?
  • rogue42rogue42 Member Posts: 11
I have just gotten over 2K on my 99 GMC Z71, 5.3l, autotrac, limited slip diff. I had put it in 4wheel drive just once and in a straight line. I tried it this weekend and found that while turning I hear a growling or scruffing sound coming from the front wheels. Turning radius is also affected by this.

Is this normal? I assume it is the tires scrubbing the ground that causes it but maybe it is something else?

Has anyone tried the hypertech reprogram thing for there c/k truck etc... Does it work?
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
The GM powertrain control module is adaptive, and will re-learn all the stock settings for spark advance, fuel delivery etc, making any gains temporary.

You can lighten your wallet if it makes you feel better now, but you'll be wiping away the tears later (like Dave40) when you accept reality. The portly 3/4 ton iron head pushrod motor was designed to travel in the right-hand lane, with a yard of top soil in the bed. $10,000 in mods won't make it as fast as the supercharged 32 valve Ford SVO Lightning, so what do you hope to get for $300?

Dave, has GM solved the problem of the rear end shimmy I get from the rear at 65 MPH? The shimmy occurs between 62 and 68 MPH. Everything below 60 is fine, and everything above 70 is ok except for a little bit of vibration. I have been to the dealer and several tire dealers to have the tires re-balanced. The rims run straight and true, and tires have no lateral or radial runout. The dealer replaced the Generals with Michelin LTX M/S. They made a great improvment in the front, but still shimmy in the rear. The problem is such that the driver and passenger seat shake, the outside mirrors vibrate, and the cup holder bounces with 2 20 ounce sodas in them. I hope that GM finds the problem and comes up with a fix soon. Thanks.

    Knobby,
I once had a car with a vibration problem I thought was the tires. The vibration happened at a little higher speed, about 75. But when you hit that speed, it shook so bad I thought something might break. Turns out it was the driveshaft out of balance. One way they test for this is to put all four ends up on jack stands, put it in gear, and "drive" it up to speed. It's quite a bit easier to identify what's going on that way. I wonder if this could be your problem. There are chassis shops that specialize in driveshaft balance. My dealer sent the car out to one to have this done. It did solve the problem. It might be worth a try. What you describe is terrible. Good luck.
  • knobbyknobby Member Posts: 60
Dave, the truck had a born on week of 5-3-99. I failed to mention that the dealer has already replaced the drive shaft with one from one of the trucks they had in stock. They also shimmed the rear of the transmission to change the pinion angle. It could be possible this drive shaft could be out-of-balance also. However, since there was no change in the shimmy, it must be somewhere else in the drive line, but I'll have them re-check it anyway. I have also heard some rumblings that GM may have found the source of the rear end shimmy with the rear springs being to hard and tight and may replace them with softer ones. I'll have to check with the dealer on this also. Thanks.
  • knobbyknobby Member Posts: 60
    Dave,

Forgive the poor choice of wording. I meant to say, to stiff of a spring rate instead of hard and tight. I hope you understood what I was trying to say. Anyway, I have the Z85 trailering package and Z82 suspension and I was wondering if this may have something to do with shimmy? Two other guy's I work with have 99 Silverados set up the same as mine and they say that they also have the same problem. Anothers Silverado doesn't have the Z82 and Z85 and he says that his truck drives fine. I wonder if there is a connection here and something to think about? Later.

how and where did you hear this? is this a vortec 502.
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Sure glad I didn't buy one of those "girly" 6.0's. Dave, the resale is gonna go to hell on that light duty 3/4 ton you bought.

At least my 1/2 ton will hold it's value come 2001.
  • g8trg8tr Member Posts: 77
Where did you hear this and what are the details of the recall.
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
    I think Dave40 got you!
  • g8trg8tr Member Posts: 77
I really needed that! I just got back from a trip in the mountains (Appalachians) and realized that I also have the dreaded shimmy at around 70 mph. Going to the dealer tomorrow to have the tires checked out first and then go from there.

I have never bought a vehicle in its first year of production so I guess I'm a little edgy. Thanks again Dave40. Maybe I can return the favor someday.

That was supposed to be a question, Do you have an address on NTB?
  • berqy617berqy617 Member Posts: 1
    Is there anyone in here?
  • snookeysnookey Member Posts: 19
Lets please get it straight this time. New Chevy's are pretty pathetic with their high-reving low torque output engines. Hell if you guys want to hear you engines whining away while doing a job that a DODGE or Ford can do at 2000 rpm. Then By all means go by an Toyota or other piece of [non-permissible content removed] crap.
And this Dave guy is a complete joke. If you are going to fix your truck up so much when it was already a "factory muscle truck" (hahah) then when not just buy a friggin Z28 or mustang? I bet he never tows anything and likes driving his pickup for the macho muscular look. Obviously trying to compensate for something right?

Just my opinion and alot of others around here aswell!

the lightning has been very good I keep it under a cover and drive it on weekends,I wish there were some roads to really open up on it's so tempting but living in the city there usually a cop some where. the photo's of the black ss is that yours or is that the new one coming out soon it looks pretty nice.
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
Your truck looks nice I like the rims, thanks for the zaino polish site I've been looking for something black is so hard to keep clean.I'll post some photos soon ,are those photos polaroids and then scanned or are they digital.

    thanks

Uhh, Dave40, was that you endorsing a Ford in the Dodge, Ford, Chevy...Who wins? topic? Without even a slight mention of the Chevy SS? Impressive. Very impressive.

That's the Dave40 I know. Those pics look good, and I see you've decided to add the Whipple. Don't add too many horsies, though, or the Ladies won't be able to check out the "chick magnet" as you fly by. That last pic, is that one you made, or is it some secret Chevy technology found under your hood ;).

have you put her on a dyno yet to see if it really is 465 HP?
  • ggosselinggosselin Member Posts: 22
Hey all- I can't help but notice your price on Hypertech Power Programmer- The cheapest place I've seen (and where I got mine) is Summit Racing.
    www.summitracing.com -$339.95
I have a '97 S-10 SS that has been "modified" and now runs about 235hp @5100 rpm (according to my little G-force meter). Stock otherwise except for reprogramming, air filter, and cat-back exhaust. I can easily blow the doors off of one of those mustang 4.6 things- with my 4.3 I might add. Truck has been nothing but excellent after chevy fixed minor problems like my trans. pan falling off on I-75 and causing well... kaboom.
I can't complain though; it is my daily driver and gets about 19.5 mpg on average. Have never taken it to a drag strip to see "what it can do", I don't feel like spending $900 on tires every month. Just thought I'd share that info with you guys, let me know of anything interesting for my baby truck- I know all you guys like to talk about is expensive stuff like new Silverados- can't afford one now; I'm an engineering student with not much money.

I like some of your comments, and I like how you set up a sight for truck photos, and I saw your truck and it looked very nice. but I can't help but wonder what it's costing you with all the mods you're doing to it,you're gonna be up close to 40g's when said and done.Is it worth it to ya?
  • f220swiftf220swift Member Posts: 103
Ya, obviously it is a company truck! Why, because nobody with the JC Witney mentality that you have would have a truck like this unless Da Da was paying for it.

Just having a little fun. You might want to take some of your own advice. However, I do have a legitimate question. I noticed that GM is putting the 5.7L in the new Cadillac SUV. What's up with that? Why isn't the 5.3L being used? The new lighter f220swift signing off.
  • cdeancdean Member Posts: 1,110
the cadillac is the old frame and body of the Yukon, which the 5.3 was not designed to fit into. the 5.7 is the engine that fits into that compartment.

Hey Dave, just picked up my '99 Silverado Z71 reg. cab/sport side red beauty! Do you know what cat back exhaust systems (with rear duals) are available? What is the maximum size tire I can get on the aluminum rims without a lift?

Has anyone had their truck weighed? I went to the
county dump and they weighed my truck ('98
GMC Sierra, ext-cab, three-door, K1500, Z71, short-fleetside bed with 5.7L engine and auto trans.) with empty bed and the total was 5620 lbs with a full tank of gas (25 gal tank = ~175 lbs gas), my wife (150 lbs) and myself (270 lbs, and it's all muscle!...yeah, right!). I also added a hard tonneau cover that weighs about 30 lbs. That means my truck's weight is real close to 5000 lbs even. I'm just curious how that compares to the other trucks particularly the new
body style GM's. They probably list curb weights somewhere, but I'm not sure if that includes things like trailer hitch, big tires (265-75R16), tow hooks, Z71 suspension (all present on my truck). I'd appreciate any input. Thanks.

P.S. I'm going to post this message on other boards as well so sorry if you're reading this many times.

Here is a site for info on the optional locking axle for Chevy/GMC. It is an Eaton locker. Rather than sensing torque, when one wheel slips, the mechanism locks the axles together. Money well spent for off-road where a conventional limited slip differential offers only a tiny benefit over a no-limited slip diff.

    HEy Dave

Im am ordering a 2000 chevy Silverado sportside soon and also was thinking about purchasing a soft tonneau cover for the bed... I noticed on the sportside that the bedrails are not indented like the fleetside chevys... The covers i have been looking at are self-clamping bars that go from one side of the bed to the other... but i cant imagine that working for the sportside. How do they install the soft tonneau covers on the sportside bed?...

Thought id ask you since you seem to know alot about the trucks!

    Thanks

Whats the differance in the 98 chevy/GMC truck 1500 vs 2500?
I know the 99's get an extra leaf and another brake psison in the back.. but what about the 98's??
    Thanks,
    Aaron

I had a sportside truck and I put a soft tonneau cover on it. The frame for the cover had brackets that went down the inside of the bed and bolted in place using some of the existing bolts in the side of the bed. I don't know if the redesigned trucks' beds are the same but that may be the way that they are mounted.

The 4L80 is an older design, retrofitted for electronic control, rather than the 4L60E designed for electronic control from the beginning, and used under the higher stress of more torque and horsepower from the aluminum 5.7L LS1 in the Camaro/Firebird. The 4L80 has a taller 1st gear than the 4L60E also. It's a slug without a 454 to torque it. Forget about the limp 366 of the '99 Sierra!
  • teaboy022teaboy022 Member Posts: 59
I went ahead and ordered my Sportside Silverado today!... I talked with the accesory specialist and he didnt think there was any problem adding a soft tonneau cover... still not sure on how it is put in .. but im sure itll work out fine...

The redesigned sportsides dont have a ridge for the support beams to clamp on to.. and i dont think there is any drilling or hardware to be installed with this... but either way Itll work out..

    Thanks again
