As far as after market products and warranties, it's my understanding that there are federal laws that prohibit a dealer from denying warranty work unless they can prove that the aftermarket part caused the problem. The Gale Banks site has some discussion about the warranty issues related to their aftermarket products.

enough of the bs, the truck is great. the drive from the dealer to home was about 120 miles. i decided to add the ford diesel additive, right or wrong. i figured i would add it for 1 tank full of fuel. tonight will be the big test-will it fit in the garage, everybody seems to think so. the garage door opening is 84". i will keep you posted on fuel consumption etc. best of luck to you guys still waiting.

Ken my salesman, was telling me about the fire at the V10 engine plant. I guess the whole plant burned.....He had to call people who ordered trucks with the V10 and tell them it would be an extra 3-4 months wait. From what he said they lost about 3 months of production engines in the fire. I got my order in about 2-3 weeks in time!! Lucky in some ways I guess. I did opt for the 5 year 75000 mile waranty today. It was $1540. I looked at waranty gold on the edmunds page which had a better price.....but I think I was scared about the acceptability factor. Gator Ford does not accept that type of waranty work. Does anyone have a 250 SD and the waranty gold. I guess an older superduty as I don't think a 99 has gone out of waranty for anyone. Oh well.....the wait continues.....
we still have no DORA info 10 days after signing the dotted line. hmmnn... looking for it sometime this week as well.
knew that plant fire was going to "bubble" this around. we're concerned now about people switching their v10 order to psd. that'd screw us up because we're still not scheduled & there's no additional wait (in the psd "department") as of now.
we also looked at the extended warranty off Edmund's & the prices there are as you mentioned, substantially better than what the dealers are quoting. and we have the same concerns... acceptability and are these people going to be around for the duration (of whatever warranty chosen)? we're going to wait until delivery to make this decision as there may be a substantial warranty on the psd itself. we'd like to have the entire drivetrain covered for 7 years but that gets pretty expensive. however; our mechanic stated to always purchase the maximum length warranty while the vehicle is new (or nearly so) because ALL vehicles appear to begin going "south" right after the manufacturer's warranty expires (even for things like Lamborgini's!).
I will be getting an extended warranty with mine. It is an additional 4-years 70,000 miles. I got a level 4, for $1027.00. The dealer originally told me $1250.00, but I was able to haggle down, and even got it in writing!! Checking various prices on the net, comparable warranties are selling for about $900.00. Hope you get your truck!!!!
Stane1, thanks for info on gas mileage, your truck is almost identical to what I will hopefully get at the end of the month. Is your automatic? The only difference is I have the 3:73LS. How heavy is your foot?? If you have read some of my other posts, I will be adding some goodies to mine(borla exhaust, air-filter, chip upgrade), so I will report back as to the mileage, performance, etc... What color did you get? Island blue is the color I went with, have yet to actually SEE one, except for the paint chip page at the dealer.
Barresa11, I will add my .50-cents worth to your gear dilema. I think what it boils down to, is what do you plan to haul, and where to. If most of your driving is going to be on the interstate, I would go with the 3:73, better highway mileage. If you plan shorter trips, or live in a hilly area, the 4:10 would be better, in addition to the quicker throttle response.(tire smoking, neck snapping, drink spilling...) I don't plan to haul to much, plus her family lives a MINIMUM of 5-hours away to the north, so I opted for the gear with the better highway fuel economy.
...more updates to follow....
Take care
When I first took delivery of my F250 Lariat CC SWB V10 4X4 3:73LS I was disappointed with the performance, but now after 200 miles she sure comes to life and I love it. My wife says that I'm obsessed with the truck and you know what, she is right!
I'm a tech-head by trade - I develop technical training material for 150HP motorcycles that go 170MPH right out of the box. The cylinder heads on the V10 use the technology from the company I work for. This company also makes the engines for the Taurus SHO. I crawled around underneath this beast and I'm happy to see Ford is using new high end technology. What a truck!!!!!!
Can you order the a 4WD SD from the factory without the lift blocks installed? Is there some way to attach a rider to the vehicle order for a non-standard build instruction like that? Is there some dept. at the VOPC that I could get my dealer to call for a thumbs up/down on something like this?
Anyone installed an air suspension system in their SD? I've looked at what's available aftermarket, both helper systems and full spring replacements, and the prices aren't too scary. It'd be worth $1000 to me to be able to vary the ride height and for the softer ride. But how do the air-rides perform off-road? 95% of my off-road driving will be no more challenging than your average logging road
BTW, anyone get better highway mileage with a bed cap? If I thought I could get close to 15MPG with the V-10/AT/3.73, a canopy and an easy pedal foot, it'd assuage some of my concerns about ordering the V-10.
And one last really crazy question: anyone got an opinion about the back support of the primo 6-way driver's seat? The reason I'm such a baby about ride quality is that I've got a bad back from playing rugby (and no knee cartiledge, multiple concussions, etc.). A seat with good lumbar support is worth bucks to me.
I wouldn't worry about mileage with the V-10. Based on the information I've seen on this sight and others, you're only talking a 1 to 2 mpg difference from the V-8, if that. My belief is the extra power provided by the V-10 is well worth that. And, I don't think you'll get 15 mpg with a cap on the V-10; my guess would be somewhere in the 13 to 14 mpg range with the 3.73, AT highway driving. Of course, YMMV. Maybe someone who actually has this setup could let us know from their experience?

One option I chose was the camper package which includes among other things heavier front springs, auxiliary rear springs, and a rear stabilizer.
Now I'm beginning to think that the chances of ever putting a big camper on it are slim. I am inclined to keep the suspension upgrade but am afraid the added stiffness will beat the passengers up too much with the truck lightly loaded. Should I drop this package?
Anyone have any thoughts or experiences on this?
Putting a slide-in truck camper on a F-250 would definitely put you over the 8,800 GVWR. However, there are campers that are light enough to work for you or at least keep you close to the GVWR. You figure that if the truck weighs 6,500 pounds and you, your passengers, your gear, your gas, your propane, and the water for your holding tank weigh around 1,300 pounds, that only leaves you about 1,000 pounds for the camper. You can probably pick up a light slide-in that weighs in the 2,000 pound range, so you will still exceed the GVWR by about 1,000 pounds.
If you don't have any toys to tow behind you, slide-in campers are often not the best choice for most people. You can get the best bang for your buck with a conventional tow trailer. Slide-in campers are not cheap. You can get more camper of equal or better quality for the same price or, in most cases, less. Your truck will be rated to tow up to 10,000 pounds, which is the same tow rating as for the 1 ton SRW or dually. A conventional trailer also leaves your bed available to store other things or to put a shell on. Another consideration is a small fifth wheel. Your truck will actually be rated to tow a heavier fifth wheel than a 1 ton because of the additional weight of the 1 ton truck. I've got a slide-in and love it, but I plan to tow snow machines and four wheelers. I've also got a one ton dually.
wab3,
the majority of people I've talked to with the V-10 and 3.73 have been quoting in the 14mpg area on the hwy.
One thing that I am finding is that my quotes of the differences in mpg between the V-10 with 4.30 and the V-10 with the 3.73 might be a little misleading. The figures quoted by Stane 1 for the V-10 with 4.30 appear to be what I have been hearing more often. His figures are about 1mpg better than I am getting. His truck is a 3/4 ton and mine is a 1 ton dually. The dually option, and possibly the 1 ton chassis, might be costing me about 1mpg.
This might mean that the difference between the 4.30 and 3.73 is closer to 1-1.5 mpg, rather than the 2-2.5 less that I have been getting. I am sitting pretty steady at 9.5-10 in a mix of city/hwy and 11.5-12 hwy. Those numbers will not get any better for me with winter approaching, since I contribute to the carbon monoxide in the air by letting the truck warm up and windows defrost for about 10 minutes each morning.
It's my understanding that the 4.10 didn't work right with the V-10 so they developed the 4.30. My guess is that it has to do with the two extra cylinders, but I'm no auto engineer. The 5.4L and the Ford diesel are both eight cylinder engines.
The 3.73 will easily handle the towing you're talking about. When you tow through the mountains, you'll probably tow more out of OD, but the truck tows fine in third.
If you opt for the 4.30 and you drive an average of 15,000 miles per year, the 4.30 will cost you about $20 more per month for gas, depending on gas prices in your area.
I have pretty much ruled out ever putting a camper on the truck. I'm tempted to keep the camper option package on the truck I ordered but do not wish to do so if the heavier front springs and auxillary rear springs will make the ride too rough. Do you think the heavier springs would noticeably affect the ride?
Crazyelvis... well, Ken's off today & tomorrow so probably no truck for you & no DORA info for us 'til at least Thursday (tempus fugit, huh?). you're onto 2 months now so hope you get it this week. we're onto 2 weeks from order (Thursday) & need that DORA info (fortunately for both of us your truck is built & ours is the psd (which shouldn't lengthen scheduling)).
Any firm information would be appreciated. In the meantime, you can color me clean, unscheduled & mighty disappointed. . .
ljutefisk, I wish I could answer your question about ride quality with the camper package, but one of the trucks I did test drive had the Heavy Duty Suspension Package, and it did not ride all that bad. I am kind of wondering how my truck will ride with the snow-plow package. Trucks are trucks, and are designed to actually ride better with some sort of weight in the back end. Of course for the SUPER-DUTY that might end up being about 1.5 tons of something!!
Crazyelvis, did you say you were going to look into a tonneau cover? I don't recall from the earlier posts?(they are all starting to run together now) I am thinking of getting one and am now just starting the research on them. Any ideas? How is the weather down yonder????
On the engine plant fire, my dealership does not have any information either. I wonder what is up? ARE THEY with-holding information, clueless about it??....
If I had gotten into the dealer before I passed the 12k mark on my 99 250SD CC PSD, the price would've been $100 less ($1080 - even better bargain). With the recent acquisition of EasyCare by Ford this is almost a no-brainer as you'll get roadside assistance, rental car, etc. in the event of a problem.
I guess it all depends on how, where and why you use your truck but it seems like cheap insurance for an expensive transmission to me!
On the engine plant fire....I was told that the V10's were being built in the plan where the old 351's were built. That would be the Windsor plant I guess.....Always refered to the 351 as a "351 Windsor"....isn't that right. This is what Ken told me when I saw him Monday.
Gossamar.....I think I am going to go with the roll top cover from pace edwards
http://www.pace-edwards.com
along with the bed rug. The only thing concerning me about the bed rug is not having the cleats on the side of the bed wall like I have with my duraliner now. Look at the pace edwards site and you will know what I mean.
Oh well......I'll be calling again tomorrow to see if the new baby is in.....
P.S.....I was getting really ticked thinking maybe my truck was damanged or something...but on monday when I went to the dealer they didn't have many trucks on the lot......they are stuck with mine I guess.......
I've (and you've probably as well) heard that
any aftermarket/performance exhaust don't sound
like a truck--some would say it sounds bad..
well, here are the mods so far for my F250 V10
4.3 SC SB 4x4: custom true dual stainless steel 3"
cat backs (2 Magnaflow mufflers) w/ 4" polished
echo tips and custom header pipes (not headers
themselves), Superchip, and Edelbrock throttle
body.. and here's how it sounds like:
http://members.tripod.com/jimveta/truck/trucksnd.wav (841 KB)
due to the fact that the V10 always has cylinder(s) firing (i've been told) you can't get
the intervals to create the lower frequencies for
a more truck like big-block sound.. instead you
get a viper'ish/sports car type sound (or as
someone else put it, a V6 on steroids)
before your final decision on the bed cover, look at http://www.calconcepts.com and look at the roll-n-lock covers. I've seen these and they are quality. You can install them yourself. They also sell other items including the bed rug. Hope your truck arrives soon.
curriegw.....thanks for the info......But....the prices on that web site are kinda high...plus I would have to install.......I can get the roll top cover installed for $699 and the bed rug for $309.
($799 and $319 for the roll and lock and the bed rug on the calconcepts web site) but thanks for the info anyway. The roll and lock and the roll top cover look pretty much the same from what I can tell.
Now I just have to get this darn truck to the dealer so I can pick it up. 14 days at the yard so far....GOING INSAAAAAAAAAANE!!!!!!!
The biggest reason I wrote is that I have been reading/hearing about people developing a knocking noise or miss in the V-10. It seems to happen coming off idle, or when they lay the wood to it, say during a passing situation. Ford is even replacing one guy's motor. It has occurred in 99' and 00' motors. Anyone heard about this or experienced this? I would like to know, cause if it's going to have a problem, trust me, it will happen to me.
No doubt, you have to go with the 1 ton. You'll still be overweight without the duallys, but the truck will handle it. You will almost certainly need airbags to keep the truck level. I've heard good things about the air-lift brand. Camping World sells them (www.campingworld.com). I may even get a pair with my duallys. They will really help stabilize your ride under the load. I think you can get a pair for about $350 installed. Another thing you might consider are Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks (www.rancho.cc).
If you want to get a lot of info on slide-in campers, airbags, shocks, etc, the Happy Campers site is really good (www.happycampers.net). Go into the chat area and you can do an index search by key words, such as "airbags". There is a guy named Brad who has a pickup with airbags and Ranchos and totes a Lance. He has nothing but good things to say about his whole setup.
Remember that the advertised dry weight of the camper does not include options. The options on my camper added 1,000 pounds. The thermal pane windows that help give my camper a -40 rating added a good chunk of that weight, but the AC, microwave and generator weigh about 100+ pounds each. The awning weighs about 50 pounds. It just all adds up. I forget the weight of water, gas and propane, but I'm pretty sure they are in the 6-8 pound range per gallon.
Like I said, the one ton with that camper is a necessity. When you've got toys to tow, a truck camper is the only way to go. You've gone top of the line with your Lance. I did a lot of research before I bought my camper, and had it narrowed down to Lance or Bigfoot. The 44" headroom in the queen cabover bed area, the basement storage, the fiberglass one seam design, and the subzero temp rating were the clinchers. It's nice to sit up in bed without bumping my head and I like being able to put my fishing pole and waders in the basement storage outside of the camper. Lance was definitely a close second for me.
shook1,
I've only heard of one guy so far who had a knocking sound with his V-10. My V-10 threw a rocker arm at 9,300 miles and was replaced by Ford with a new engine. Mine was a fluke problem that almost certainly occured during at the factory. I've put another 14,000 on this new engine and it has run flawlessly. Although the Ford V-10 was new to the pickups in the 99 model, it's not new to Ford. They've been running it in the Econoline vans for a couple years and in the RVs.
manifold, and did you install this yourself???
Crazyelvis, do we need to send some tylenol with codene to keep things in check???
I haven't seen any figures on the V-10, but for the 460, Banks advertises increases of 36 hp and 50 lb-ft of torque with the Stinger and 68hp and 85 lb-ft with the full Power Pak. The Stinger appears to be a combo of ram air and cat back exhaust.
By the way, we had our first day of snow here in Anchorage today. It didn't stick, but it's almost time to dust off that ESOF knob on the dash.
