That graph represents the NYMEX price, which is the most widely used reference for quoting oil, commodity prices. I'm not sure why OPEC's basket price is consistently lower than the NYMEX value. Maybe it has something to do with transportation costs. There's got to be some expense involved in transporting this oil via tanker all around the world. So maybe OPEC charges $53 barrel to pump this oil out of their facilities into one of these tankers. That's not going to be the same as what we have to pay once it gets here.

When you state that we shouldn't use our own oil I'm curious as to who you are referring to by we? Are you talking about the US? Since the oil industry is private in this country it's not a US decision. If I'm a domestic oil producer and my costs are $25 barrel why wouldn't I sell as much of it as I can at the current market price? The fact that Saudi Arabia's price might be $5/barrel is irrelevant. A profit is a profit. I'm not going to forego making money just because someone else is making more.
  • tpetpe Member Posts: 2,342
Has anyone be paying attention to the cost for a barrel of oil lately. It has been as low as $40.00 a barrel. This is what they paid in the 80toes and 90ties. Oh no, I bet that this post will get some disagreements

Okay, you've made 3 assertions. The first being that oil is currently $40/barrel. Wrong, its around $59. The second being that $40/barrel is what we paid in the 80's and 90'. Wrong again; in the very early 80's we paid mid 30's for oil. For the rest of that period oil prices were typically below $20. The third assertion was that some people would disagree with you. Well you got that one right but people are only disagreeing with you because you are wrong. BTW, that's not an opinion, its a fact.

Thanks Johnny, pretty cool about the '49 relatives.

Anyway, I was wondering if something had happened to cause fuel to shoot through the roof around here, particularly the Shells. They jumped 20 cents in one day; a Speedway 25 cents over a 12 hour period. :surprise: Know the barrel price edged up slightly, but was really steady. Despite this, prices really went up. Guess it's time to get back to the $2.50 - $2.75 range for upcoming spring-break, then +$3.00 for the summer driving season.

Going to hate to fill-up at the end of the week

One radio report (probably reading the fax from the petroleum promotion institute, grin) said there'd been a refinery fire at a location that supplied 30% of gasoline for one region.

Our prices went up in advance of additional snow and cold weather.

Prices hit $2.39. But I see some parts of area are down to $2.17. The companies will raise the price late today or early tomorrow across the board to get those lower-priced stations back up with others. Ninety percent or more will all go up to -- my guess is $2.459-- over a period of 24 hours. Then some will drop slowly back down.

Our 4 cent drop MAY have lasted about 12-18 hours and we're back up to $2.29.

Need to keep the seat belts fastened and not move about the cabin in turbulence like this :surprise:
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
We had the same here. The snow and cold snap was announced a few weeks back, wham-o, prices shot up. The snap extended longer than expected, prices went up. Went down a couple cents at one station for a day, then jump up 8 cents the next? :confuse:

Again, just a primer for spring-break, spring, then summer?

The prices are up to $2.499 at most stations. In some parts they've dropped to $2.17. I filled up this morning in the low price area for $2.29 for Mobile and was happy. I'll fill the other car tomorrow. I suspect this won't last. I feel another price group jump coming.

Sheetz raised their price for 87 in 2 steps to $2.23. Everyone in the immediate vicinity will soon match it, based on prior experience.

Meanwhile, in another part of town, I filled up at Hess for $2.11, whose price dropped 5 cents since yesterday to match East Coast. The place was mobbed, with several pumps out of 87 and even 89. I don't expect this to last long.

So...will those Prius inventories start to drop again? (The local dealer had about 6 on his lot the other day.) And how will this affect the new GM and Toyota large pickups?
  • tpetpe Member Posts: 2,342
I'm reading this thread and hearing people comment how the price of gas has swung up or down 20 cents as if it's significnant. Let's keep things in perspective. The average motorist in this country burns between 500-600 gallons of gas a year. So these price swings equate to $100/year.

We're constantly passing gas stations and looking at the price so any change will definitely register in our minds. Let's not get carried away. The impact of lower or higher prices is primarily psychological at this point. Whether or not we can eat, take a vacation, buy clothes, etc., is, IMO, BS. Higher gas prices are definitely an annoyance, but we don't need to exaggerate the effect on our standard of living.

I'd agree but I live in Texas and driving a hour+ is the birthright of this state. I as a transplant from Michigan, never driving more than a half hour to work now drive an hour and ten minutes. I also live in a area where 2 major refineries are present and feel I have the right to [non-permissible content removed] because the Kuwaiti's are paying penny's on the dollar for gas while I have to saw off a arm and a leg. :P

At the Hess where I bought 87 for $2.11 yesterday, it jumped 12 cents today to $2.23. The tanker truck was there yesterday, and I wonder if the price was raised at soon as the storage tanks were refilled.

Since we were in one of our other vehicles with half a tank today, we stopped at Exxon nearest our home to fill up at $2.17 for 87. It's not going to last long at this price.

Tomorrow when we go out, we'll take vehicle #3 to this Exxon station, in case the price holds at least one more day.

You might be correct and is why I'm hesitating to buy a new GMC Sierra Denali and I want one bad but good gosh if gas goes up to $3.00 a gallon it just would lighten my wallet to often. Perhaps I should wait for a hybrid or just buy a 08' CTS as I don't want to give all my money to the oil/gas company's.

I would highly recommend against buying a large pickup, considering your long commute.

It was bad enough for me last summer paying $42.50 to fill the tank of my Camrys! And one has a overall average of 25.5 mpg, and the other 28 mpg.

No way that Denali will average even 20 mpg!
  • rockyleerockylee Member Posts: 14,017
Thanks for your concern. The Sierra Denali would not be a daily driver for me. I plan on buying another used car for that. My wifes uncle still hasn't brought us the 98' Buick Century so my wife and I had to borrow my FIL Ford truck. He isn't using it and we told him we would fix some minor repairs on it as a thank-you for leting us borrow it. He didn't want us to jump into something foolishly because of an emergency. So my wife and I are so upset with her uncle that we will buy something else here soon instead. I think my wifes cousin who wanted it for his daughter has caused this delay on purpose so we'd buy something else and he could buy it for his daughter. The sad thing was he didn't want to pay the asking price for it. It was my wifes grandmothers car and she would of wanted my wife to have it.

P.S. Gas here in Dumas is $2.25-$2.40 I will get some $2.25 tommorow I think. ;)

I know, you're feeling too much pressure to stay American in what you buy. Break it with a new Mitsubishi. I've all but decided to get a '08 Lancer. It's my better half that disagrees, though. So it may be all cybertalk on my part.

Never say never. While I believe that gas prices will become more volatile with the overall trend being higher all it would take is a global economic recesion for gas prices to drop below $1.50. So for those that want gas prices to fall, that's what it will take.

"import vs. domestic" squabble in this ghastly thread. Buy what you feel comfortable with.

All I know is driving quit becoming a chore and started becoming fun in May of 1999 when I traded my '97 Ford Escort sedan in on a Violet Mist 1999 Kia Sephia. It got even more fun when I had some 70,000 mile Yokohama radials globbing on to some Konig Diva wheels purchased from Discount Tire. No kidding.

I will buy what I feel is the best deal for my wife and I available out there. And it does change from time to time. But right now I've got a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS in 5-speed form, Electric Blue with the Sun and Sound Package(650-watt Rockford Fosgate 6-CD changer with subwoofer in the trunk and a sunroof for viewing those endless Arizona nights from)stuck firmly in my brain.

I don't even seriously look at any of the American carmakers for new car ideas anymore.

But this thread is about ghastly and making men we don't even know in the Middle East rich. And keeping goons involved with trading commodities manicly happy. We do it because we have to.

If you were freezing cold in the winter, a winter like this winter, and you needed to turn your furnace up to stay warm, would you do it? It's your choice.

With ghastly we don't have very many choices, do we?

Are electric cars ever going to become reality? Speaking of other automobile energy drives. ;)

I think some areas will see $2 gas after Spring break. About May it should drop again.
Diesel is below premium now in San Diego. Average price for 91 octane is $3.00. Average for diesel is $2.92. Regular is at $2.77 a real bargain.

Given that I paid $1.989 three times and $1.999 once for 87 in late January and early February (this year), who's to say it won't happen again?

Back in 1999, I never thought I'd be paying 80 cents a gallon, but it happened.

    So who really knows?

BTW, fun and games are happening here in central VA as well -- Sheetz went up 2 cents to $2.25 and the Exxon where I bought gas Saturday and Sunday for $2.17 went up 6 cents today. Meanwhile at the Hess station where I bought gas on Friday for $2.11, the price was $2.23 on Saturday and Sunday, but back down to $2.17 today!
  • rorrrorr Member Posts: 3,630
Gas at the local Texaco seems to be holding fairly steady over the last few weeks - haven't seen some of the swings reported elsewhere. Prices this a.m.:

    $2.01 / $2.11 / $2.21 for 87/89/93 octanes.

Local big box grocery (HEB) opened a new mega-grocery store in Leander Tx a week or so ago; they've had gas at $1.96/$2.06/$2.16 since they opened their fuel station.
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
I know what you meant, just joking.

In any event, when I see a price increase of 20 cents or more in a matter of 10 - 12 hours (am to pm of the same day) I think that is significant. Just as when prices dropped that quickly over a week's time back in the mid-November - early-December timeframe, I thought that was significant as well. In fact, I thought it was really significant as earlier price decreases were in the 2 - 5 cent range, over twice the time period.

The scary part for me is that we are in the $2.50 range and most are driving like it's $2.00!! Before when fuel hit $2.50 mark many were slowing down, not driving as much. Now it's considered a "bargain" by most. Are we "being conditioned"?
  • tpetpe Member Posts: 2,342
Now it's considered a "bargain" by most. Are we "being conditioned"?

We're definitely becoming conditioned or de-sensitized to higher prices; that's human nature I guess. When gas first hit $2/gallon a few years ago people were predicting the end of our way of life as we knew it. In a relatively short time $2 gas has become something to celebrate. If gas goes back to $3 people will complain but probably not hysterically overeact like they did the first time. For the most part the attitude would now be that this sucks but it's just something to deal with. My point is that these higher price's affect is mostly psychological. And the psychological impact will be greatest when dealing with new territory.

Most people are probably aware that the global stock markets took a pretty big hit today. Surprisingly the price of oil didn't drop. That's unusual and if the markets keep declining the price of oil should follow.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...as gasoline prices were pretty much holding steady. Within the last two weeks I've seen a disturbing trend - Sunoco Regular = $2.27 then $2.29 then $2.33 then $2.37 last night. I'm on my way to work and see it at $2.41! What's going on?

We are still below the adjusted price of gas in the early 1980s. I remember back then when all the media claimed we would never see oil below $30 per barrel. Guess what? They were wrong, just as I believe you are wrong about never seeing $2 gas again. I think we will see it before summer. Not that it will make any difference in the way people race around here going no where.

As far as the "USA Average price" going below $2.00 per gallon in 2007 -

    Ain't gonna happen.

There may be some isolated pockets of "under 2 Bux" stations, but for the USA average dipping to $1.99 this year?

    Ain't happnin..... :shades:

My evidence: Last time the USA Average was below $2.00 was on or about March 10, 2004:
