Sunoco Regular is up four cents from Sunday from $2.49 to $2.53! Good thing I filled up my girlfriend's LaCrosse yesterday! "ultra?"93 is up to $2.73! Let the gouge begin!
I'd guess at least $4 of that is taxes. That's pretty typical throughout Europe. I suppose they could drop that tax and start taxing property and income at a higher rate in order to make up the shortfall. The US average is about 44 cents per gallon. ~19 cents of that is federal and the rest is state and local, which can vary significantly. Definitely a different mentality in the US when it comes to fuel taxes. I liken it to Virgina, No. and So. Carolina all having cigarette taxes below 30 cents a pack when the national average is over $1/pack? Why would that be?

Simple -- they're all tobacco-growing states. Support your local tobacco farmer!
BTW, VA did raise their cig tax from 2 or 3 cents to 30 cents in the last couple or so years. SC's is the lowest in the nation at 7 cents.
I think we should wonder why other states have their taxes so high. Same for countries. Instead of thinking we ought to raise those which are lower in tax rate, perhaps higher ones should be reduced.
"I think we should wonder why other states have their taxes so high. Same for countries."
Easy - because manipulating taxes is the general public's favorite method of mandating social change, so long as it's "the other guy" that is being effected.....
Agreed. Same for speed trapping using dropped limits in areaas where drivers don't expect them and red light cameras. It taxes "the guy behind the tree, not me."
I think we should wonder why other states have their taxes so high. Same for countries. Instead of thinking we ought to raise those which are lower in tax rate,
Well if you accept the fact that a government needs a certain amount of funding to operate it just comes down to how you would prefer that they generate this revenue. I prefer consumption taxes. If I could trade higher fuel taxes for lower property or income taxes I'd do it in a heartbeat. You obviously prefer lower fuel taxes even if it means other taxes need to be higher.
Don't put words in my mouth. Did I ever say I preferred lower fuel taxes than present in lieu of higher other taxes? NO.
Well what are you saying then? You specifically said that states and countries with higher fuel taxes should lower them. How would you make this revenue shortfall up if not with higher taxes in other areas? I guess you could advocate smaller government but that's another topic and a little unrealistic. Given a fixed sized government you can't reduce one tax without raising another.
San Diego average $2.88 for regular unleaded. Cheapest gas at Costco $2.76. Cheapest diesel $2.75. and the cheapest 91 grade unleaded sitting at $2.97. Hard to find premium under $3 per gallon. Time for those with diesel cars, trucks and SUVs to smile.
Actually downsizing government and reducing taxes would be a good way to go. The ones who think government is fixed in size are usually politicians.
I'll buy that but the reality is I've never seen our government downsize. The best you can probably hope for is to slow growth. Let's say you could actually reduce the size of government, allowing for a reduction in taxes. Of all the taxes we currently pay would you target fuel taxes as the first to be reduced? I personally find consumption taxes to be the least distasteful and the most efficient in terms of revenue generation. Again, just my opinion, but when I advocate for lower taxes I'd prefer we start with income and property taxes.
BTW, I'm not sure raising fuel taxes reflects the "tax the other guy" mentality like cigarette taxes. I probably use around the national average of fuel per year so I'd definitely be affected. Even people that don't drive would be impacted by higher prices. Is this a method of manipulating behavior? Absolutely, that's the whole point. If taxes will have the affect of acting as a deterrent which behavior would we rather discourage, earning money, owning homes, or burning fuel?
I go along with less government. Seems hard to find a politician in any party that agrees. Or at least makes an effort to accomplish any down sizing, at least in their district. CA should be awash in windfall tax with the massive increase in home values. I have not seen any proposals to give any of that increased revenue back to those that are paying the bills. This is the same situation that brought about Prop 13.
I seem to remember a few years ago when Gray Davis was still governor CA's budget was in a shambles. Have they dug out of that hole yet? States don't have the luxury of being able to adopt the feds fiscal mismanagement policies. They actually have to balance their budget occasionally.
I believe they passed Ahnold's initiative to borrow a few billion to dig out. CA had about $40 billion in surplus when Gray Davis gave it to companies like Enron in exchange for keeping the lights on in CA. With the current robust economy here there should be plenty of money coming in to satisfy the State Spenders in Sacramento. That has little to do with our high fuel prices. Ours is more involved than just simple taxing. CARB has set mandates on fuel formulation since 1990 that has increased our wholesale price over most of the country. Then they added the 4 cents per gallon on any gas refined from imported oil. They also tacked an 18 cent a gallon premium tax on diesel. It all adds up to higher prices at the pump. I do not see it slowing anyone down.
to gas prices this morning, but on Tuesday night I filled up my truck on the way home at the local Citgo. 89 was up to $2.559 per gallon. It was $2.599 at the Shell.
just kiddin', delray. I do not think we'll see sub-$2.00/gal 87 no-lead ghastly prices again, though. Ever.
Never. No, I'm not gonna add a droopey-face to this post, either. Just don't ever never ever expect sub-$2.00/gal 87 no-lead prices again. Ever. Just the facts, men.
That's been tried before in the 70's. I can tell you from experience that waiting in gas lines or not being able to get gas at all is worse than paying high prices.
Wow, who would have ever thought that the price would go up $.20 in just two days.
I filled my tank up on 03-06-07 with 93 Octane at a price of $3.00 per gallon.
On 03-08-07 the same gas is now selling for $3.20 per gallon.
I guess I played that right
Well I guess it's that time of the year again.
You know, refinaries are down for maintenance or lack of care.
I guess since at least 3 of them here in California have had explosions and mishaps in the last couple of months someone has to pay to fix them. I mean come on we can't expect the oil rich companyies to use the billions they've made of us in profit to fix them.
Sure, I still think it will be back down to 2 bucks. Just checked my mileage spreadsheet. We are still about 43 cents below last years peak in San Diego. May 9th I filled up at $3.36 per gallon at Costco.
Arco Stations are at $2.93 today. Diesel holding at $2.75. Time for the guys with a VW TDIs to have the biggest smiles on their faces at the pump.
Last year on 03-06-06 I paid $2.46 for regular unleaded 87 Octane.
Exactly 1 year later, 03-06-07 it was selling for $2.86.
I also live in Southern California. So it isn't the same as it was last year. In fact it is $.40 more per gallon and is continueing to climb. It has gone up another $.20 since 03-06-07. On 03-12-06 I paid $2.54 per gallon for regular 87 Octane. A year later, 03-09-07 it is now selling for $3.00 a gallon. That's $.46 more per gallon.
I average 104.81 gallons per month last year. So at $.46 more per gallon it is costing me an additional $48.21 more per month right now. That's $578.58 a year.
I don't know about you guys, but that's more than I pay for my car insurance for 6 months to have Full Cocerage on a 4x4 04 Tahoe Z71, 4x4 88 Jeep Commanche, and Libility on my 89 Taurus.
And that's only comparing a $.46 difference. Since we are paying $3.20 a gallon for 91 Octane compared to $1.90 like some where paying back East not to long ago. Well you can figure it out if you want. It's more than I want to thnk about.
And we all know that it is going to keep going up until it hit's at least $3.50 a gallon for 87 Octane here in So. Calif.
My point was not that it would not go even higher than last year. It is that it can go back down. We will probably never see $2 gas in CA as we have had an agency called CARB that makes sure we are different than the rest of the USA. We have had designer gas since 1990 and paid more than most since that time. If you are retired and using that much gas you should maybe analyze your lifestyle. My gas bill is less than my water bill each month. I got to keep the trees watered to absorb all the CO2 you are dumping into our air.
$2.00/gal for 87 no-lead...but it ain't goin' below $2.00/gal for 87 no-lead again.
Never. The money's too good, the cigar's too fat and nobody cares enough to do enough about it to change it.
After all, we have nat.gas bills to pay, we have money to go earn...leave that stuff to the politicians to fix for us.
Right. Scott...ya just don't get it, do you?
Aww...cut out that trip to go watch your NCAA team play in March Madness...there's always some unnecessary expense we can cut out to help line the pockets of the oilmen, huh?
I was wondering what it meant everytime I read awaiting CARB approval.
Now I guess you have inlighten me. As if this will cure the problem. Another government bureaucracy. It couldn't be that we are polluting area's 10 times what we should be because we over populate them?
I don't recall saying that I was retired. Although most of the mileage put on my vehicles are from going to and coming from doctor appointments. So there's not really a lot I could do about that. I do pray and wish it wasn't so, then I wouldn't be in this tremendous pain that you have probably have no idea what it's like. Now we are way off the point here.
One more point I just have to make. It use to be that the more fuel you burned the more C02 your car would put out compared to those who drive less. Well, that isn't the case anymore. When people keep their vehicles tuned, oil changed on a regular basis, tires inflated to the correct psi, etc. they do not pollute as much as the older cars who use less fuel do. This is why we have to smog test every two years in California and have strict guidelines to adhere too. When I read my smog test results I'm not putting out enough pollutants to choke a baby bird. Of course I do not expect you to beleive this as your obviusly way off the point for this forum and the price we pay for fuel.
Don't count your chickens just yet. Once more hybrids, Methanol and other alternative fuels are being used and the oil company stops selling as much fuel they will again lower their prices to sell more fuel. Right now they know that the weather is warming up and people will be buying more fuel and traveling a lot more this time of year, so they are doing like they have been doing since the 70ties and raising the cost we pay at the pump.
Once the weather starts to cool down again in October and people drive less the oil companies will lower their prices again to sell more fuel. This is how it has been for the past 30 years and will continue to be until our government does something about it.
Our great country has turned into corporate greedy good for nothing junkies. It's just lately, within the past couple of years that we are realizing this because we are really being ripped off and paying over $3.00 a gallon for something that is costing the oil companies less than $.50 to make.

$3.00+ gas by summer? Again?
What if we have a big hurricane in the Gulf (there were none last year)?
$2.28 to $2.30 for the cheapest in town.
Where's it stoppin? Place Yer Bets, Place Yer Bets !!
So I filled up with gas for the first time in more then a month and it was 54 cents higher then it was in Jan. THat is crazy.

Exactly. Those states take care of the tobacco industry and this country takes care of the oil industry.
Don't put words in my mouth. Did I ever say I preferred lower fuel taxes than present in lieu of higher other taxes? NO.
On topic; gas prices at $2.319. I think I'm going to fill both cars tomorrow before I run to pick up Powerball tickets.

$2.25 / $2.40 / $2.51 for 87/89/93 octanes
Up over 0.20 over the last week and a half. First time I've seen that big a spread between regular and premium.
The 2 Chevron's in town list 87 no-lead at $2.49/gal.
2021 Kia Soul LX 6-speed stick
Cheapest in town is now $2.33-$2.35 and the prices have jumped 24 cents in the last 30 days - almost a penny a day rise !!
California I bet already has a lot of stations over $3. Yep - a place in North Hollywood is at $3.36 this morning...
Look for sales of hybrids and small, efficient cars to go up again !! Woo-Hoo for that !!
$2.49 is the higher priced stations. Lots of $2.29
