    I know you posted that in jest, but in all seriousness, I don't see how a boycott on BUYING gas would have ANY effect whatsoever.

    The only boycotts to have any impact would be a boycott on actually USING gas. But then that would require actual sacrifice from the motoring public so that'll NEVER happen....

    Gas prices went to 12 cent increments the other day, after being 10 cents between grades for as long as I can remember.

    yesterday in Willcox, AZ, 87 no-lead was selling for $2.99/gallon.

    OK,

    At 6am, the Jewel had fuel listed @ $2.74 for 87, with the higher grades higher in $0.10 increments. This was actually $0.05 less than the night before.

    Drove by there @ 10am on way to dentist, still @ $2.74; on way from dentist 1.5 hours later fuel truck was there, price jump to $2.77. Other grades $0.10 higher. This was not as bad as last week when fuel price jumped $0.20 from $2.57 to $2.77 within two hours on last Thursday evening.

    Drove past @ 4:30pm, price for 87 was $2.90, with other grades $0.10 higher.

    Other stations prices are $0.05 ~ $0.10 higher

    Sheetz 87: $2.73. They have 93 for $2.99.

    I topped off my tank (sort of, it was almost down to half) for $2.65 at Hess, because I know it's not going to stay at that price for long.

    Update on Sheetz, since I had time to study the sign more while stopped at a red light:

    87: $2.73
    93: $2.99
    "autodiesel": $2.79
    kerosene: $2.79
    (no room to post 89 -- presumably $2.86)

    And they have restrooms, snacks, and cigs! :P

    It is probably the newly mandated ULSD. Kerosene is like #1 diesel or Jet fuel.

    It is the new ULSD, but the sign went up well before that.

    Maybe it's to assure drivers you won't be competing with 18-wheelers at the pumps (and waiting forever).

    Hess went up 8 cents from what it was yesterday; now $2.73.

    If it weren't so cold here, maybe we could take a trip to the beach on the Eastern Shore and fill up on some of that (relatively) cheap gas. ;)

    I don't know what's up with Calif. When we were in L.A. in Dec. 2005, we paid about $2.25 for 87 at 2 different name-brand stations, drove cross-country back east, and the lowest we paid was $2.05 in Kansas City and Indianapolis.

    Why such a big discrepancy now?

    The reason I know is I tried filling my Passat TDI at a truck stop and the nozzle was too big for the filler. They had a separate pump for cars.

    The steps used to be a dime apart - now you pay 12 cents to jump from regular to the midgrade and another 12 to premium.

    back when gasoline was about $1/gallon for 87 octane, the 91+ variety was usually 20 cents more. a 20% premium for premium.
    but nowadays it's about a 7.5% premium for premium.
    about a year ago i started seeing gaps of up to 70 cents per gallon for 91+ compared to 87.
    recently it seems like the gap has settled down to 20 or 25 cents.
    percentage-wise, those of us with cars optimized for 91+ are getting a better deal now that gasoline is about $3/gallon. looking on the bright side, i am!

    I've been thinking the same thing. Most vehicles today that optimally run on 91+ octane can get by on 87. So what is the mindset of the typically driver? When gas was $1/gallon were people more or less likely to pay the 20-25 cents for higher octane. I think that I agree with you. With the higher overall prices the cost differential between higher and lower octanes seems somewhat insignificant. But I believe that others take the opposite position. They feel that with these high prices it is now more important to save every penny you can. I'd be interested to find out if there has been a significant change in the breakdown of sales between the different grades with these higher prices.

    I stopped at the Shell Station on the loop on my way to the picket line. I dropped $20.00 in the tank and my wallet was a bit lighter. It put me only at slightly above a half tank. :surprise: I asked the clerk if he wanted a arm or a leg this time ? He just smiled..... :blush:

    Local prices ahve been $2.79 down to $2.699 during the last few days. I attributed it partly to having a lots of visitors in town for a major convention of Wintergard National competitors over the end of last week and the weekend. Wasn't an empty large decent motel in our area so the companies kept the price high.

    But it's only dropped a little on Monday.

    I saw one guy at a local quick market (UDF Mobile gas) ask for $1 in prepaid fuel for his car. WOW. That's like a pint these days.

    this morning driving in to work, I caught a glimpse of the sign at the Shell station...$2.959 for 87, $3.069 for 89. I didn't notice the hi-test price.

    Lowest I've seen locally was $2.69 at East Coast for 87.

    $2.73 and $2.79 are common.

    Sheetz backed off the 30-cent differential between 87 and 93; the latter is back to 20 cents above 87 ($2.99 vs. $2.79). I guess not enough people were buying the "high-priced spread."

    My usual Sunoco truck stop, Palisades Park NJ - price difference from April 9.

    87 - $2.679 - up 10
    89 - $2.779 - up 10
    91 - $2.839 - up 10
    93 - $2.879 - up 10
    diesel - $2.679 - up 4

    We have reached the magic point where diesel has matched regular unleaded. Diesel will be equal or less from now until about September around here... or unless it's another bad hurricane season.

    I just came back from a few days out at the Grand Canyon. Well I thought the high-prices were just because of a lack of competition at the canyon, but I drove down to I15 and then about 50 miles west, and still found the stations to be $3.39 for regular 87 octane! I only put in 2 gal. and drove on to Kingman, where the prices were $2.93, and that's about what Vegas was.

    I saw a lot of RV's on the road, and with the distances out there, those must be quite the bill-to-fill!

    That is one reason I sold my Mercedes Sprinter RV. Even getting 25 MPG it takes a lot of diesel to get anywhere East of San Diego. I can take that money and get airfare specials and be most anywhere I want for less than driving. And do not have to fight the awful truck traffic on the Interstate highways.

    Our San Diego average unleaded is $3.31 now. Diesel is $3.11.

    Boise is still holding at $2.85 for regular at most stations near me; some are up to $2.89.

    You cannot fly spur of the moment and get a good deal. It is a sellers market and you have to watch for the deals. Same as a cruise in the Caribbean. It is still a good option for one or two people. A family traveling you better get a Suburban or at least a mini van. I think they will hold the gas prices right at the limit of human resistance. 5 cents more a gallon and we are canceling the trip to Wally World.

    For those planning a trip to CA get your wallets out. We got a great big welcome at the gas stations. Of course our hotels are almost as expensive as Europe or NYC.

    me for ghastly I still only pony up $20 at a time.

    I will only fork over $20 at the pump even if the ghastly costs $5.00/gal for 87 no-lead( :) ).

    Doesn't matter how far it will get me down the road..no one should ever pay more than $20 at a time for GHASTLY.

    And that ghastly is fetching $2.81/gal for 87 no-lead now at the lowest-priced station in Willcox, AZ, that being the infamous Mustang ghastly station.

    How do you keep track of your mileage without filling the tank? Filled the wife's LS400 yesterday at Costco. $3.39 for 91 octane. The ARCO across the street had jumped to $3.51 for Premium. Costco does not charge a 45 cent fee for using a debit card like most the the other stations.

    Have you explored Cave Creek Canyon and the Chiricahuas yet? I would like to do that next trip that direction.

    I was just there a month ago (not the Grand Canyon specifically, but northern Arizona). Do you mean I-40 rather than I-15? Prices were approaching $3.00 even then, especially around Flagstaff.

    We took old 66 from Seligman to Kingman and were running low on fuel. We had to make a "desperation stop" in Truxton at a no-name station and paid $3.29 ($10 for 3 gallons). Kingman was more reasonable (~$2.60 IIRC, and Vegas was about $2.70).

    You get in those off the beaten path places and gas prices are high. Last time I drove from Las Vegas straight South was April 2003. The price for gas on Hwy 95 at the only station for miles around was $3.99. That's when you are thankful that a Suburban has a 46 gallon tank. I had many trips that I went over 700 miles between fill-ups.

    Would that station on US 95 have been in Searchlight? I always thought that was an interesting name for a town.

    I'm thinking there might be more stations now, since most truck traffic can't use US 93 over Hoover Dam and is diverted to US 95 west of Kingman, AZ.

    My '04 Camry can go 500 highway miles on a tank of gas -- we once did it from central VA to Philly and back without stopping for gas.

    Sunoco "ultra?"93 has crossed the $3.00 barrier. It's still $2.99 in my neighborhood, but I've seen it elsewhere at $3.03. Let the gouge begin!

    I just look at my Lancer's mpg-ahh-meter and see the average. I have yet to do a mathematic calculation on the '08 Lancer's mpg. The way I put gas in I would need to run it till almost dry and then take note of the number of gallons put in from that $20.

    Then count the miles up until bone dry again. I plan on checking mileage next time I put gas in.

    I'll check local gas prices later today while out shopping and report back.

    ...my Seville STS at lunchtime today. "ultra?"93 is $2.99 + a shot of octane booster to make the real stuff. I wonder if the fortunate people of the Harrisburg area still have REAL ULTRA 94! Too bad I'll be driving my '88 Park Ave which is happy on the regular swill.
