My 2000 GMC SLT that I picked up last Saturday has the same seatback problem. It is starting to get real annoying. Waiting on the dealer to talk to GMC for a fix. They said it was play in the motor. For such an expensive (leather top of the line) seat I definetly won't tolerate this.

I ordered my 2000 LS on 11-26-99 and took delivery on it on 1-25-00. Even though I was told not to expect delivery until sometime in March I was more than happy to take delivery earlier than expected. I'm so glad that I waited to order my 4-door model rather than settle for the 3-door model that a friend picked up off of the lot in the fall. Now he's kicking himself because he couldn't wait a few extra months!! Let me tell you it was definitely worth the wait. Good Luck everyone who's still waiting.

I took my silverado back to dealer today for them to look at the seat back. They said it was the track and ordered the parts to repair it. We'll see if that does it, but I also believe it is slop in the drive gear/motor area--I don't know if the track assembly includes any of these parts or not. If you get any more information let me know--I'll do the same.

With no warning my dealer called me at work to say that my 4 door LS Truck arrived. Now the hard part, trying to decide what options to get.
My dealer has bombarded me with all kinds of options, ones that I haven't considered till now. For starts, he offered Auto Armor for $399 dollars. This is a Rust Perforation Protection Plan for 10 years/5 year surface rust. For an additional $399 you can get an Environmental Paint Protection Plan which is made from a Teflon base? Has anyone used this stuff before? And get this, for another $149 dollars you can get the 5 year Interior Protection Plan (Scotchguard). Then there is the Theft Guard for $299 dollars, where the dealer will basically etch in each window with a permanent traceable number. Last, he offered a 7 year, 80k mile extended warranty plan for a mere $1600 dollars. The things that I really wanted, such as mud flaps, bed guard, etc weren't brought up. Anyway, I'll be picking up my truck by the end of the week. I can't wait.

My 4dr 1500 2wd LS arrived late January. I had the dealer add the clearcoat ($125) since I live in the desert (Phoenix). The manual says no additional rust protection is needed OR recommended. $399 sounds high for any paint protection plan. It sounds like you would just be lining their pockets. Everyone offers scotchguard for everything. You can buy it in a spray can or just use that money to get good seatcovers.

If you want to spend that much on theft protection I would get Lojack. The truck already has three different theft deterrent systems in it though.

I would invest the $1600. You probably would not spend that much in truck repairs and even if you did you'd have all that interest leftover.

I got a call from the dealer today about the seatback. I guess they went ahead and ordered the recliner motor assembly right after I left last monday cause its in. They asked me if i wanted an appointment. Well...YEAH! I'll be there tomorrow morning. They estimated a couple of hours. I'll tell you something about GMC. This is my first brand new vehicle. My last, a T-bird was bought 1 year old. I had it in more then once for various problems, espically the moonroof. Anyway, not one ford dealer I went to accepted appointment. I always hated that you had to drop your car off by 5am for it to even get looked at that day. There was always a line of cars comming out of the drop off area. Next a service manager who walks out looks at my truck and pulls it in for a tech to look at inside of 15mins is tops in my book. To top it all off I ordered and bought the truck from a different dealer. Not to mention the free rentals for any overnight work. Gas delivery etc. If this is any indication, along with this perfect truck, GMC will have a custome for life. Now I know this is very early in my ownership to talk so highly of them, but it is a great start.

    John,
My 1500 LS SB 4dr. had a 1/10 TPW and was built on 1/13. It left Fort Wayne on 1/20 and arrived at my dealer on 2/1. GM Customer Assistance was able to tell me when it left the factory and my dealer was able to trace the truck thru the shipper the week before it actually arrived. Your dealer can and should do a better job. Tell him other customers with the same TPW already have their trucks. You need to get it by 2/29 to get the $500 Loyalty Coupon. BTW I placed order with the dealer on 11/24.

I should have finished reading all of the posts. Great that the truck is there. I agree with Gary (number1) about your latest questions.

I just got back from the dealer where they installed a new recliner assembly to fis the 3/4" travel I had in my seatback. Results...PERFECT. I'm very satisfied with the level of service GMC provided. I was there at 7am and out before 10am with the problem solved. Now the truck is perfect. It is a 2000 GMC Sierra SLT, Sportside locking 3.73 with the 5.3L. 300 miles so far without a hint of vibration. Gotta love it! Go GMC!

I am having trouble with deciding on an appropriate gear ration for the Silverado I am about to order. Which is the best all-around ratio to go with, and is posi-traction necessary?
  • bhimelrightbhimelright Member Posts: 12
Glad to here your seat is fixed.I called the dealer to let them know what you said was wrong with yours. they said their interior man looked at it and seamed to think it was the track, so they ordered that. He said since the track is already ordered they will try that first. If that doesn't take care of it they would try the motor assembly next. I took a good look at it-- they haven't worked on one yet-- and it looks to me that I'll be making two trips to get this repaired. Thanks for the good information-By the way who and where is your dealer located.

My purchase dealer is Showcase in Phoenix and my service dealer is Sun in Mesa, AZ. Both are very good but the tax in Phoenix is lowerer so I bought it there. Anything to save a buck. Good luck on the seat.

Bill, It depends on which truck you are getting?

My truck is a '00 X/C 4dr 4WD. I have the 5.3 & locking rear axle with the 3.73 ratio. I didn't want the 4.10 ratio. I think the 3.73 is the best all around ratio with the 5.3 engine.
  • rayt2rayt2 Member Posts: 1,208
You should get the locker no matter what, now the only choice in rear axle ratio's is limited to 3.73 (good all around) or 4.10 needed for hauling/towing substantial loads/large trailers.

  • afs93afs93 Member Posts: 30
I ordered the 3.73 Locking rear axle ratio. Rayt2 explained the two ratio perfectly! If you are getting a 4WD pickup.

I selected the 3.73 locking rear axle ratio with the 5.3 engine. I don't have to much to tow & don't need the 4.10.

    Just my $.02 worth!

I would like to thank you all..

I wasn't antsy about getting my new truck until I started reading these groups.

GM told me to call back next week and they should have a TPW(?) for me....We'll see.

Since I am one of the 20K that walk off their jobs at The Boeing Company this week, I suppose I could wait for my truck just a little bit longer...ha.ha..

Anyone know where I could pick-up one of those "loyalty coupons"?? Trust me I am a loyal Chevy guy except when I had a mental lapse and traded my '91 K1500 Z71 for a '96 2500 Ram.

Does anyone have any experience with the Pace Edwards Roll-Top bed covers??

The dealer told me the factory cover was junk and suggested the Pace Edwards. They run about $700-800 (non-powered)installed.

Good luck up there with the lazy 'B'.

I am a unrepresented Boeing engineer at another site. It is frustrating to see the stance the company has taken with the engineers as far as
handing over $$$. But then we get all of the rhetoric about being the 'future' of the company.
I'm sure you know it all more than I. We are keeping on top of what is going on up there.

    Good Luck again!

    Paul

My friend is a dealership manager there is a rumor that the sliders won't be available for long term structural reasons. Can you folks ask around, when your on the phone, with any Chevy people, see what you hear?
I realize that glass may not add that much strength, but the Chevy Silverado has a very large extended cab. Quite a distance without support. Ever try climbing into the small Ford 4 dr back seat. It's a challenge, especially after you bang you head on the seat belt hanging from the roof. But, back to the subject, if anyone hears this may be true let us know, I'll order without the slider and get my allocation in right away. Leaning that way anyway, though.
  • rcoosrcoos Member Posts: 167
I'm new to this form. I want to ask steve roberts why do you want a sliding rear window in a extended cab anyway? I would rather have the rear window defroster. Just my two cents worth!!!

  • nasvikingnasviking Member Posts: 43
If it wasn't for my truck camper, I'd get that rear defroster also. I need that slider so my chocolate lab can check on us. Welcome to the site, hope you learn as much as I have in the past 6 months. It's almost like a support group to help deal with these delay's at Chevy.

Why is it that 2 tone paint is available on the LS model but not the LT. I called the 800 number at GM and they only told me to talk to the Sales Manager at my Dealership about this issue. He says that they will paint it at the dealer.

Am I the only one who would like an LT with factory 2 tone paint?

Does anybody know a way to get it from the factory?
  • ww00650ww00650 Member Posts: 47
Not from the factory. You just havn't realized that you don't need 2-Tone paint on an LT. Now, promptly go to the dealership, and see the Sales Manager, so that you can be properly brain-washed.

That's the process all of us CrAzY thinkers must go through. You'll see, just clear your mind, and breath deeply.

Speaking of crazy. No rear slider because of "long term structural reasons." I'm glad I replaced my solid rear window with a new C. R. Lawrence POWER slider. I wouldn't want my cab being held in place by that little piece of glass. If it had to bear much more than a little bit of the structural load, it would probably shatter. Some story get screwed up somewhere. Ever hear of the telephone game?

    rcoos,
You can get what you like. In MY opinion, the defroster is useless on the solid vertical rear window. The POWER slider is very cool; It allows extra ventilation if wanted; Allows the dogs to check in the family during trips; And it's easier to press the button, compared to climbing back there (x-cab). Oh Yeah, and the kids can't fight over opening and closing it. That's a BIG plus to the POWER.

Here, anyone can rationalize the irrational. Just stick around.
  • nasvikingnasviking Member Posts: 43
I just had to laugh. Your a pretty wired up dude. Thanks for " keepen it real"
What's this power slider run monetarily wise? Sounds like chicks would dig that!
  • paynerpayner Member Posts: 31
How much do the cost and how much of a job is it to install them??
  • jerobbinsjerobbins Member Posts: 48
I have a rear windows defogger in my 2000 Silverado LT ext cab and I really like it. With the LT I also got heated side mirrors. The combination really improves the visibility in the morning. My truck is tall enough that I can't scrape the rear window without getting a stool, and I don't like scraping the side mirrors because I always move them out of position.

WW00650 is right about one thing - climbing in the back to operate the manual factory sliding window is a pain. That's one reason I decided to get the defogger. After driving the truck through the fall and winter I'm very happy with my decision.
  • rcoosrcoos Member Posts: 167
My brothers truck was purchased off a dealers lot. It is a fully loaded LS regular cab short box 4WD pickup. It has the rear window defogger & heated mirrors also! The only options not on the truck was the sportside box , sliding rear window & bucket seats. My brother works part time in Alaska. He wasn't to keen on the defogger when he bought the truck, but thats the way it came. Now he really likes having the defogger & heated mirrors. It's nice to have all the windows clear in a couple of minutes, especially in the winter in Alaska!
    Just my two cents worth!!!

Picked up my Y2K LT x/c 4dr - 4wd last week in Henderson, Tn. Way too early to tell just how good it'll be. Impressed, but still getting used to it. Turkey season opens April fools day in Tennessee, I'll post again after season and let anyone who cares know how it performs off the pavement. I would like to know if there's a "better" bedliner out there and how much are they. My old '92 Silverado x/c 4wd had a Pendaliner in it, which scooted back and forth all the time. Is there one that has a "tacky" composition to it, so it stays in place and loads don't slide around. I know the cargo "tie down" brackets have to come through the sides of the liner, so isn't there an opportunity for water seeping in those holes to cause rust??? I'm debating just throwing a rubber bed mat down and being done with it. I appreciate any feedback.
  • jerobbinsjerobbins Member Posts: 48
I'm using a Bedrug and I think it works well for me. I usually don't haul stuff that's messy - mostly wood, camping equipment, etc. The bedrug hoses right out when I do get it dirty.

I also believe the grip on the bedrug is optimal. It has enough friction that stuff doesn't slide around unless I fly around curves; however, it has enough give that I can slide boxes to the front of the bed without major problems.

If I was going to do it again I might get a spray-on liner. My biggest concern with those, besides the cost, is the grip. Most of the spray-ons have too much friction for me.
  • rayt2rayt2 Member Posts: 1,208
Skip the bedliner & just go for the rubber bed mat, that is all I have ever used & it serves the purpose just fine, things don't slide around it's easy to clean & it's alot cheaper than a bed liner. Remember after all it is a truck, what is the purpose of a bedliner?? to protect the paint for reasale??? I don't think people buying a used truck care much if the paint in the bed is scratched, scuffed etc.they usually are looking at outside appearence, drivability & mechanical etc. the bed is for hauling not for looks!
    my 2 cents.

I agree with you, but I still have to worry about rust. I live in a State that uses lots of salt in the Winter. Scratches leaving bare metal aides in rusting.
  • rayt2rayt2 Member Posts: 1,208
Here in NY State they do not spare the salt when it snows either, I should have mentioned I also have a cap & access to indoor washing w/warm water during winter (Volunteer Fireman) so I keep up with hosing it off after snow storms. If your interested you can see some pics of my recent aquisition at http://www.picturetrail.com/rayt2/60054

I think $219 is a small price to pay for the Duraliner. I love that I can stack with it..a couple of 2X4's and a piece of board, and I can put the craft tables on the bottom of all the stuff, and still get them out first. I too live in NY, and overnight, one scratch turns to rust, so it's well protected, and I don't have to worry about the bed. The bedliner protects the sides too, when stuff shifts. It also doesn't hold any mold smell, for the times visitors will come to the campground and sleep in the back of the truck. It's not for resale, since we tend to keep our vehicles for a long time (hubby is having trouble letting go of his 87 Sub), so we are the ones who don't want to look at a scratched up bed.

    Hello all:
Found this site today and wish I would have found it a year ago. I have a 99 ext cab 5.3L 2tone Indigo blue/pewter and and really like it but am disapointed lately because of the rattles & a couple things the dealer gives excuses for. here's the deal.
I ordered my truck in Oct.98 & picked it up on Jan 9th 1999. I was in love. Now I want a new one. I have a laundry list of stuff, but it sounds like I'm lucky since it runs great on the highway and does not shimmer at certain speed, and I push 20mpg highway. Here's the stuff that T's me off. The windshield rattles like crazy over 55mph (I have a Lund interceptor on it.)
The rear slider window rattles and leaks like a sieve. (I have not really noticed the quarter windows being noisy but I wouldnt doubt it)
I have a bad knock in the steering column. It is the worst when moving about 30-45mph when turning at about 45 degrees to the right. (dealer says they cant verify)
I have a clunk in the rear everytime I go over a bump. Dealer says it might be the springs and that is natural.. I dont believe it. My buddy had one just like mine(before he drove it into a house) and his was very quiet in the rear.
My drivers side speakers and door covering rattle too. The speaker even jumps around when turned off and going over a bump! Other that that.. I love it!

I heard someone talking about taping the windshield.. can anyone offer advice on the windshield/clunk in the rear/knock in the steering column, etc??? I would appreciate any comments. THanks!!!

In addition YOU ARE STILL UNDER WARRANTY, get the dealer off his but to get it right , go to General Manager if Service Mgr. is unresponsive, then owner in that order.
Print out the info from NHTSA bulletins & put them down in front of their noses, they might GET IT then.

The only way to weed out the bad is to set them straight. Does your state have the Lemon Law, that will be last avenue. Be Sure to DOCUMENT evry conversaion you have with these people ie; date/time who you spoke to & about what.

Good Luck & be persistent till it's right by you!

Thanks for the info. I looked at both sites and found more unfo, but nothing on the door rattles.
On the leaf springs.. Will the dealer know?? I suppose I'm going to shove this and the bulletins in the service dept's face when I arrive.. I'm going to schedule a 15k service tomorrow. Anything else I should insist on??
By the way.. all of the help here as been invaluable. Mark
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
The door rattle has TSB# 98062. It was the last on the list for the '99 Silverado on the NHTSA site. If you were to shove all of this in their face, I don't know if they would be too cooperative as GM requires them to verify each and every problem first hand prior to authorizing warranty work. What may work is to approach them with a list of items that require their attention and ask to go on a test drive with a tech to verify each and every problem. Once that is done, give the tech the sheet with the TSB's and he will probably be grateful saving him valuable time. these techs are usually compensated with a base pay plus commission for work done. They do not get paid to look up TSB's.

The one thing that you should insist on is the steering shaft problem. That is not a TSB but rather a recall due to the safety issues involved. The dealer must fix the recalls or you can call GM to report that you have a recall that the dealer did not want to repair.

Depending on how large your dealership is would determine if they were aware of these problems. The bigger the dealership, the more trucks sold, the more problems reported. For myself, I had to educate the service manager who stonewalled me on every turn. After losing a couple of battles, he finally started to listen. At the beginning of March my dealership got a new service manager...I guess I lucked out as this one shows a lot of initiative; has experience on the internet; and is eager to resolve customers problems.

Good luck!! and persist until you succeed.
  • rayt2rayt2 Member Posts: 1,208
you helped weed out the "bad" service manager & helped the dealership get one with more knowledge & initiative! Good for you I hope all your problems have finally been resolved or in the process of. I hate to see stuff like this on such a good truck. Can't verify just doesn't "cut it" and is a convienient catch all for "we don't know what we're doing".

Mglacy: As Obyone sugeested kill em with kindness, I was speaking figuratively w/throwing it in their face. Point being youv'e got the amunnition needed to pursue to a resolve & definately take the service tech for a ride to help them "verify" your stated problems.

The PICKUPS Conference has gotten WAY too big....

it is unwieldy to manage, and difficult to use for "newbies". There is entirely TOO much topic duplication, so I will be doing some SERIOUS topic consolidation in the next few weeks, getting us down to not more than 2-3 topics per vehicle type, and ultimately down to 200 topics or less.

THIS weeks consolidation candidates are: F-150's, Silverado's, Dakota's, and Dakota Crew/Quad cabs.

In that vein, please consolidate this Silverado topic to Chevy Silverado - Continued IX and continue these discussions there.

    Thanks!
