Saw a new BMW 750iL at a gas station in New Hampshire. Love the improvements, the profile is less dumpy than the previous model. Although, I couldn't help but compare the looks to the Lexus LS.

Saw two Gallardos, one blue, one dark grey. The dark grey was in downtown gunning it and downshifting, with the engine roar echoing off the highrises. I think he just got the car.

Also saw an Elise, a Bentley GTC in black, a new Ford Transit Connect (the new european van), a Genesis coupe.

Saw a bunch of new Outbacks as well. Mostly Blue and Green. Just one new legacy (non-GT)
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
    I still haven't seen a single new Legacy/Outback

Saw a Cube parked in DC streets on Saturday. Boy do those stand out. Can't miss it.

New Mustang next to me in the commute on the way in, may have seen the same one I saw before because it was on the same road.
  • anythngbutgmanythngbutgm Member Posts: 4,277
Not surprised. :shades: They're more of a New England thing...
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
Subarus are pretty big here too, skiers like them, and so do the outdoors set, especially the ones who want everyone to know that they see themselves as outdoor enthusiasts :shades:
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
I just saw a "Transit Connect" van, unplated, brand new. I noticed a funny quirky touch - wipers on the rear doors that park in the up position.

Also saw a Murcielago, a green Spyder model.

The new Outback is a bit funny - Subaru gives you a discount if you are a member of the American Canoe Association, but the roof rack on the new Outback are so pitiful, Yakima doesn't recommend that you use it for hauling canoes. Thule racks supposedly work on the 2010's though.

I'm still hunting for my first Transit Connect.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
The person I know who recently bought an Impreza wanted to get a roof rack for it - and he is very much not an outdoors type...he just thought it "looked cool"

Transit should be a hit, like a small Sprinter.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
That's funny - my Yak racks live in my garage rafters most of the time.

The Transit Connect would have conversion van possibilities were it tuned less for city stop and go. The add-in storage amenities are interesting too.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It's rated to hold 150lbs IIRC, why won't the Yak rack fit? Can't they just make an adaptor of some sort? Are the cross bars too close together or something?

Thule can do it, why can't Yakima?

Saw another Cube this morning on my way in.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
Here in the city, a lot of people like to show off their racks....uhhh....you know what I mean... :shades:

Cadillac XLR in Crimson Pearl at the intersection of Oxford and Verree in Fox Chase in NE Philly this morning.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Evidently the problem is that the rails are solid in front and back, with around 30" open, where aftermarket bars could be attached. Not enough spread. Yakima just says "we cannot fit your vehicle with a top of car rack system but you can always have one custom installed."

I assume Thule is using some spreader setup - those always seemed to be a bit of a kludge solution to me.

Saw one today in Chicago and it has a fairly impressive presence, looks like an original. Gutsy from the front. Side is muscular and hunched. From rear appears somewhat 'tall' though generally a tight design and not too imitative of anything else on the road... nice taillights.

New Genesis coupe on the hwy in light blue, and a Rolls Royce Phantom in black.

Saw a new Camaro in the pre-dawn hours this morning...appeared to have xenon lights.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Saw a Genesis sedan with temp tags.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
I still barely see those things. Haven't seen one for a couple weeks now.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I see about 2 a day, every day.

They're selling well. The Genesis outsells the Lexus GS, Infiniti M, and Acura RL, handily too.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
I suspect Bentley outsells the GS and RL, too

It must be a regional thing...although there is no shortage of lower Hyundais around here.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Well you have a ton of new money around your area right? New money wants flashy stuff and at least in my experience is even more concerned about brand snobery then older money.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
There's a mixture of new money and some slightly older money - which means Bentley Continentals probably outnumber Genesis by 10:1, but then again, so do Lexus ES/LS of the same year.

new outback. Saw one on the road, and was surpised by how much differnt (and bigger) it looked.

so, stopped at the dealer yesterday for a test sit. Nice. Seats were pretty comfy, and the back seat was relatively huge compared to the old one. Looked OK too, but I liked the legacy sedan they had out front even more.

Oh, the outback even had the 6 speed stick! try to find that on another SUV/CUV thingee.

I'm still having a hard time getting used to the new Legacy's headlights. They look very Sebringish.

I think the previous generation Legacy had some of the most handsome lines of any Japanese sedan.

Really? I see Infiniti influence more than Chrysler.

Surprise - the new Outback is a tad shorter than the 05-09. It's much taller and a bit wider, though, so it does look bigger overall.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
I see a bit of Infinit influence in the C pillar now that you mention it.

    Naaah, really?

The straked hood is what stands out on the Sebring. Plus the headlights fall down in to the bumper. It looks sort of blocky, heavy.

The Legacy has headlights that look pulled back, almost stacked, Nissan/Infiniti style. Look at the bumper, the big fender flares.

I don't see it at all.

    I see this:

    Minus the trick photography.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
Why do Asian and Asian-influenced headlight assembly designs have to be so huge and stretch halfway back the front fender?

    I loathe this design trend.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,105
    Not just Asia...

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
There's an exception to every rule. But for 99% of cases, these cars are connected to a certain area.

And then we have ones like this, where the comically long front cluster and the comically long rear cluster seem to be half the length of the car:

    image

    Lazy styling, IMHO
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
If they gave the Solara more face lifts, eventually the headlights and tail lights would touch! :D
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
    lol yeah they would.

I agree about huge headlights. They make the relatively large17" or 18" wheels seem puny in comparison.

In the past 24 hours I've seen a Genesis (these things have been on the road for what, a year now?), a Q5, an E-class coupe, and a 2010 Mustang convertible which I think was a rental.

I got a good look at a parked Nissan Cube today. I liked it but probably not enough to consider buying one. If you ask me Nissan ought to liberate the side of their design department that comes up with funky designs like the Figaro, S-Cargo and Cube, they're a lot more interesting than most of their regular stuff.

The new Maxima looks good though.

Lots of good stuff today - MB S400 hybrid, a couple of Alfa 8Cs, a few Spykers, RR Phantom Coupe and Cabrio...but these were dealer displays at a concours show.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
That's a good day of sightings!

We had a local small exotic car show here, I think yesterday. Apparently a Buggati Veyron was on display. I work saturdays so didn't have a chance to go

Still haven't seen one of those.

One cool thing though...the RRs were part of a fleet brought by RR itself - and they had several PR/demonstrator people with them. After I insulted a British guy by calling a Phantom a "hybrid" car (A British-German hybrid that is...when I said it he wouldn't look at me from there after), my friend asked the nice looking woman if he could sit in the Cabrio. She said yes, and he just about died. Then she asked him if he wanted to drive it! :surprise: - he didn't take her up on that though, he knew he'd be scared to drive something so expensive, especially on the crowded roads here.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
lol. People forget that hybrid does not necessarily mean gas-electric. It just means a combination fo two different parts. Back during the height of import tuning (mid to late 90s) Hondas with engines swaps from Acuras or other Hondas were called hybrids too.

Snooty Brit. You should have asked him for some Grey Poupon. :P

I used the term hybrid before the term crossover became popular to describe wagon-based SUVs.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,669
Euro-American "Hybrids" were common back in the day as European car makers took advantage of relativel cheap American V8 power and torque for their Gran Turismo cars. The most mnote worthy were the Iso-Rivoltas with Bertone bodies and Chevy power, the Facel Vega with FV bodies and Chrysler-Hemi power and the DeTomasos with Ghia bodies and Ford 351 V8s...I could go on.

  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
I like all of those models. Beautifully styld bodies with reliable V8 muscle.

I once even met someone who thought the Smart car was a hybrid. I said it's a diesel, and just because it's samlla nd fuel efficient, it doesn't mean it's a hybrid.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
I thought of also mentioning something about MB owning Brooklands, but I thought that might be rude :shades:

You are right about public perception of the word "hybrid"...it shows what the non-enthusiast knows, and how corporations have succeeded with marketing.
  • anythngbutgmanythngbutgm Member Posts: 4,277
 What a ugly, dopey looking ute that thing is. The Cheapuinox looks like a supermodel next to that thing.

Saw 2 more new BMW 7-series yesterday as well as a new Z4 and a Green Murcielago. :shades:
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,105
I gotta agree on that GMC Terrain. I haven't seen it on the street, but the ads with pictures keep popping up on various sites, always give me a little 'ugh'. There is a new Equinox at the lot at work, looks OK, way bigger than the previous model parked a few spaces down. That older one has 2" of water insided one of the headlights, hope the new one fares better, quality-wise.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    My eyes!

They managed to combine the bad parts of a Ford Escape with the Benz GLK:

    image

The Vue looks better, the Equinox looks much better.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,408
    That's just nauseating. :lemon:

I have to wonder if there is a certain designer or team at GM who gets to add their own touch to things. The company still has too many heavy handed designs. And that makes me think of the Volt, which has too many shades of the 1990 Lumina in it. Do these bastards have lifetime tenure?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The Volt is OK. The low window line ought to make visibility decent, a thing that 300C owners could appreciate.
