I have not had to service my truck yet, but JBA in Glen Burnie appears to be very competent. I have a buddy that uses FOX in Laurel. He is very pleased with their service.
gnipper - fyi, the stereos for the silverados did change from '99-'00. you can now get the cd player as part of the head unit. and, like me, can save some ridiculous amount of money, like $200 by deleting the tape deck. and you get yourself an extra little cubby-hole. i can't believe they would charge $200 for a tape player, but hey...i didn't pay it. kyle
I had a laugh at the service department as I picked up my truck from warranty work. Looked at work order and saw:
Wind noise quarter windows- Could not verify
Driveline growl- Could not verify
Tire vibration- Could not verify
Squeaking front springs- Back ordered parts
Rear leaf springs bottom out with 300# load- Back ordered parts
Front seat squeak- Reconnect spring
They have had my truck for 6 days and managed to not verify over half of the problems; not have parts for another third of the problems and managed to reconnect a spring in my seat. How's that for Mr. Goodwrench service! BTW, I usually give the service writer $30 - $50 tip to follow up so I know that he is trying. Why do I get the feeling that these factory trained technicians learn how to write "COULD NOT VERIFY" one thousand times at GM tech school.
I say who ever has them first is the original....and then everyone else is a copy cat?

I think the the Babble part he came up with is good, but I wouldn't ant to take him fishing with us (because I think he maybe 1 oar short, if you know what I mean)
PF59's None available here in the NE at Autozone, however they said they will be getting them soon. Checked Walmart/Kmart also and still none available. The good news is if you are seeing them at your local stores now that means we can't be far behind, hopefully by the next oil change.

Scot........my cap was just installed where I bought it free of charge, they used two layers single stick tape on front edge & 1 layer on sides, then 4 quick clamps (shortbed) Long bed has 6 clamps. Thats it water tight! You don't want double stick tape, just the side on truck sticks not cap side.
Cam.......Rochester, we're practically neighbors, well 4 hrs away at least. Don't you love the Snow Belt, winter is not over yet. Remember the old farmers saying, when March comes in like a lamb it goes out like a lion. WINTER IS NOT OVER YET! & the weather you get usually comes are way next.
The set up the use here is they stick the tape to the cap not the truck. This way if you pull the cap off to move something there are is no tape to get ruined like there is if you apply it to the truck. Same as rayt2 said layered (2) in front and one down the sides, no leaks and works great.
I've had them installed both ways and like this way better.
I have spoken with several makers of bed caps, all now use only 3-M redline double stick tape. They had problems until switching to this tape. It comes installed on any rail cap you order. If they do not use 3-M redline tape, do not order it. By the way, GM has a factory rail cap available from the dealer, part #12496453, at $134.00 wholesale cost. Looks just like the stepside cap I am told. I am going to order the above cap in a few days. Good luck. Be aware if you mount a tool box and a rear stake hole tie down, ask them if the railcap will expand and buckle in the heat of the day.
A question for you guys that installed lift kits; I would like to lift the front of my 2000 silverado 4x4 up 3" to level it out, any kits available for this. Any and all help will be appreciated Thanks
Took my truck to the dealer today to have the oil consumption problem looked at. Of course, they could find nothing wrong. But they are doing something about it. They’re topping the oil off and then want me to bring it back every 200 to 300 miles to check the oil. It’s gonna be kind of a pain, but I started it so I guess I have to go along with their request. I asked what would happen if it was using too much oil. The answer was noncommittal - they didn’t know and we would cross that bridge when we came to it. It should be interesting.
Going to try tomorrow. One tire dealer said no, one said maybe, one said they would. Guess they can rub (on the front) by the front wheel well. I hope they fit. Going with Cooper's (best deal), hope they fit. Like what you've done with your truck Kanton, gettin the MAF sensor in a couple of days...

but one guy here said they rubbed when he tryed putting them on a 99. I have a 2000 and don't think they changed anything, guess I'll find out for sure tomorrow. They sure are a lot bigger, should make it look real nice...

I didn't know how to import the web address for the pics into the "Edmunds" response, and rather than let the world know how limited my computer skills are, I was waiting for some help. (Guess everyone knows now). I checked out the pics of your truck and it looks good with the matching flares and side-moulding color. I thought all solid color Silverados came with a black side moulding, thats why I went the way I did. Was surprised to see yours as a match to the bodycolor.

Mike L.....I'm sure Vince4 will also agree about the reg. cab. As he says, we are a dwindling breed that still go for the traditional pick-up look. One benefit though, because GM sells so many Ext. Cab units, the regular cabs are usually always on some GMAC finance or lease rate % that is a better rate than can be had on an Ext. Cab.
By the way if anyone cares, the step bars on the truck (Post #116) are the Westin CPS type. So far I am very pleased with them.

My salesman told me to just go drive 70, it doesn't matter. The manual said not to go over 55 for the first 500 miles. My dad says to vary the speed for the first 500 miles.
I go with your Dad. I have always kept the speed under 50, and varied it for the first 500 miles. I have never had any problems with my vehicles, no oil burning, and always lasted a long time. My '78 Pontiac GP is still going with 200,000 miles on it. I don't think salesman really know how to break one it. He can sell you a new one if the present one goes down. And just remember, it isn't his, it's yours.

One other thing I had done today was to have the dealer check a creaking noise coming from the front end on low speed turns. They removed the lower control arm and lubed a bushing. I'll also give a brief overview to spark anyone's interests. The way it works is that you file your taxes through H&R Block, either by visiting an office or through their online program. The online program only costs $9.95 and is incredibly easy to use. Then, if you get a refund, they send you a "credit card" with a value equal to your refund. I got mine in less than a week. You can use the credit card anywere, just like a debit or ATM card. But where the value comes in is that H&R Block has special deals with certain companies who offer discounts to those who use the card there. If you have at least $500 on the card and use it towards your new vehicle, GM will give you another $500 towards it as well!! Another caveat is that if you have less than a $750 refund from all your taxes (you can do federal and state) the card costs $19.95, but over $750, it is free. Hope that I have explained it all clearly.
To sum it up, if you haven't file you taxes yet and expect over a $500 refund, you may as well do the online tax program and get another $500 off your new SILVERADO!!
I am considering purchase of a '00 Z-71. I read this board daily and I am somewhat discouraged by some comments concerning reliability for Silverados. Consumer Reports rates the '99 and '00 Z71 poor on reliability.
This is a beautiful truck. Owners please advise. Would you buy another one?
3M red tape is what I have on my Putco skins...and trust me.....it isn't going anywhere. Once that stuff is on...it isn't coming off....unless you take a heat gun and heat it up maybe?
When I sell the truck...I may take the boards and rails with me....but the skins are staying.
As for winter being over??.....A friend of mine plows snow...and he almost always plows once In March!

Negative. Though it is a great truck the little problems that the dealer and GM drag on out and deny is something that you wouldn't want to go through. As with any manufacturer, there will be problems. It is how the dealer and the manufacturer handle these problems during the "moment of truth" is how I perceive the true value of ownership. So far Chevy and GM have fell flat on their faces. I would definitely get to talk to other customers of the dealership that you intend to buy from and make your decision from there. Good luck!!
I think this is the best value out there. All trucks break down and they had some problems early, but some of that is to be expected. Chevy has been making trucks for years and they will continue despite what some may think. Point is - if you like it buy it. It's kinda funny all the Tundra owners I talk to seem to think it's the most reliable thing on the planet, but it's only been out a little while. They all make good trucks, and trucks always hold there value very well. I don't think you can go wrong no matter what you pick - get the best deal. My two cents...
Yes they will fit. I just put a set on my 99 ext. cab 1500 and they fit with no rubbing. It changes the look of the truck completely. I also put on fender flares from the Chevy parts counter. heres a link to a picture of it. http://members.aol.com/tonkadave/index.html
Good question and I'm not sure what I'd recommend. Had a few little problems / annoyances but the dealer has fixed most of them with only one or two things left that they can't seem to fix and are still annoyances. Great truck and like others have said I don't think any of the others measure up, but I'm still not sure I'd buy another one any time soon. I'm thinking I'd like to try a Tahoe, but it also is a new model year with lots of changes.
Good points: Best ride, Best fuel Mileage, Best options, most room and comfort, overall good reliability Negatives: Too much plastic and the associated plastic squeaks, new model start up problems, questionable new transmission design / programming, fuel prices going to $2.00 a gallon and it seems the resale value is taking a big hit on these models e.g 1999 LT loaded wholesale/trade in value now around 20K. (my older C/K's seemed to hold their trade in value better then this one)
Resale value on 99 lows because of the 3 door everyone wants 4 drs now when thats what they are making. 3 door trucks are pretty much obsolete now.
Also whats with no one liking all the plastic? What should they use then? I dont know i like the interior the plastic doesnt bother me at all but what do u want them to use metal. Most all other vehicles too use plastic.
Babble is a good name for you. Some of those older C/K's are still holding their value with 2 doors, never mind 3.
For resale down the line, 4 being worth more than 3 (other than maybe the original option price) is just BS. If a used truck is in good shape and has the important features (like engine size, gears, etc) the 4th door doesn't mean a damn thing.
I guess we would have to go back to about topic IV to rehash this. I'll quit now.
Ryan, I can't believe the 3 Vs 4 door makes that much of a difference, but who really knows. My personal belief is it has to do with all the lease vehicles and when they come off lease, regardless of what they say is the residual (purchase)value at the time of return it in fact is fully depreciated and they just have to dump them at a low cost, or be stuck with a lot full of used vehicles (cars and trucks).
On the plastic dash, not to start a range war, but if you look at the Tundra dash and other makes they are still using the formed and padded dash. I think for 30+K it is pretty short sighted to stick a vacuum formed plastic dash that squeaks and if you tap on it, it makes a Yugo look good. For 30K they could have at least padded the underside so it doesn't sound so tinny. But, that is just a personal peeve based on looking at what the other manufactures offer, over all it's a good vehicle, they just could have done a lot better for the price and made it a great vehicle.

Just some info for those wondering about resale value. My truck pictured in a previous post is used. I bought it with 20000 miles for $21000. Its a 1999 3 door LS with the 5.3 autotrac, compass mirror, bucket seats, cd, slider. came with a tonneua cover, bedliner, bug shield and nerf bars. I guess I saved about $2500 or more on the cost of a new one. Only problem so far was poor radio reception which was fixed with a new antenna cable under warranty.

This [1500 LT X-CAB 4X4] is my first brand spanking new vehicle. Just under 2000 miles. 5 weeks old. 0 problems.
BTW. Everytime I even think about posting, someone else adds something new. Talk about babbling.
