I want to replace the rear speakers in my truck. Does anyone know how to remove the plastic trim? It looks like I have to pull away that whole "wall" to get to the speaker grill.

Hey to you folks with the ticking or clicking noise when accelerating I noticed a home-made fix on

Put "exhaust shield washer" in the search field.

on the lot yesterday. Looked nice. Think I'd hold out for 2001 for the 325 H.P. 6.0L. Also looked at a new Tahoe LT and it had a few neat changes from the Silverado like a decent sun visor! It also had a automatic climate controls (which I've never cared for). Hopefully these changes make it to the Silverado in the 2001 model year.

Ryan, by the time you get your truck the 2001's will be out! hehehehee
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Maybe mine will be a 2001 if they quit making them soon. I wont be upset. Well im heading out i have a 2 hr drive. Ill let u all know how it went tonight

When upgrading to larger tires, you are in fact making your axle ratio higher not lower. If your truck is equipped with a 3.73 and you add 285's you are making that 3.73 seem like a 3.42.

It's been my experience that when a truck is properly set up to handle bigger rubber (proper gears) mileage usually doesn't increase but it usually doesn't decrease either.

It my case I have 4.10 gears, and my truck came with 245 series tires. My truck gets better mileage, and runs more at the proper rpm range with 285's than it did with 245's, because of the gearing. I have a 4800 motor, which is part of the reason why I have 4.10's, and I'm getting 20 mpg on the highway, at 70-75 with 285's, and I have a cab-high topper too.

I think a 3.73 geared 5300 truck should see no decease in MPG with 285's, providing the fact that the odometer is off by about 10 miles per hundred, is taken into account when figuring your MPG.

I sat in my truck today. I had to leave it at the dealer fo the Rhino liner.
It was pretty. I will pick it up Thurs. night.
I ordered Feb 1, got built (in Texas) on feb 29,
and arrived at the dealer on Mar. 10.

thanks for the info. on tire pressure. I'll adjust my 285's to the 40 psi and see how it rides/handles. I also stuck with the stock rims - there not too bad...

What tire did you put on??? I am to lazy to look back at your earlier post so if you could let me know what you put on it i would appreciate it. Also where will you post the pictures, i would like to see them. Also have you noticed much of a difference if mileage?? mine 2500 has the 3.73 rear in it so i am kind of concerned about power loss, especially since i tow 300 miles a week with it in the summer. Thanks

I use a Palm Pilot and have a application for it called Kar Kare. I use it to log expenses for my truck. Here are the "stats" for the first 8062 miles on my truck:

    Average Distance per Tank: 322
    Total Fuel Cost: $550.80
    Fuel Cost/Mile: .068
    Total Maint Cost: 60.00
    Maint Cost/Mile .007
    Average MPG: 17.08

Have a LS SWB/Reg Cab, 5.3L 3.73 have had in shop 8 times for the following:
Rear main oil leak @ 100 miles - replaced
Squeak under cab - Tightened "grounding strap" - fixed
Driveline growl - chose not to reflash eprom due to possible gas mileage hit
spark knock - not fixed, still knocking
helluva squeak in front seat - can't seem to fix, been at dealer 3 times for this
squeak in steering column (sounds like it is behind air bag) - still doing it

Does not use any oil (so far) use Mobil 1 10w-30 initially changed to Mobil 1 @ 3000 miles.

I really like this truck, I've driven it on the Outer Banks of North Carolina from Ocracoke Island to the Virginia Line (where possible of course)does great in sand. Also driven in 30" of snow/ice in NC mountains, does great in snow (have locking rear end) ABS are the best I have ever had (previously had a 97 F150)

Other than the time in the shop I like this truck. However probably would not buy another first year vehicle.

I ordered it finally itll be entered in the computer to gm on tues morning thats when they get their allocation i guess it sounded like. Every 2 wks i guess.

Anyone know about the P265 WOL tires? I was told today they are on constraint now. Might have trouble getting them and the order may be delayed guess im in for a little wait now oh well.

    $29300 After taxes

I don't understand how it is possible to get more gas mileage with bigger tires; explain this.

    kyle
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Well what do you know, finally! Congratulations. Now the even harder part starts: waiting. It'll be different now because it's real and it's so close. I also waited quite a while to order and found my anticipation grew a lot as the delivery day got closer.

Now do we get a daily countdown to delivery!!!!?????
  • jescopjescop Member Posts: 33
Congrats, You may not have to wait all that long.
Some of the trucks are starting to get here in 6 weeks from order.
If you have trouble getting the wol's try the 265
blackwalls. I got the blackwalls on my truck and they are Firestone Wilderness AT's, for $140 less.
Can't promise all blackwalls are that, but in my case it seems like expensive white lettering.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Vince: Thanks but dont worry no countdowns till delivery. Im gonna have to wait about 2 wks after it comes in to get a day off on a weekend and go get it.

Jescop: They are going to put the order in with the WOL tires and hope it takes it and if it rejects it they will put it in a few more times then they said they might just order the other ones and switch them with a truck on the lot with the tires i want. I really didnt want this i told them to try a few wks ordering it with the WOL because i can wait im in no big hurry now.

    Everyone:

I went to 6 dealerships within about a 20 mile radius no one took me serious kinda blew me off or didnt accept the supplier deal. I went 150 mls away from my house and found a great dealership. I was really amazed. It was well worth traveling that far. When i first emailed this dealership back in august and they replied i had no clue where this place was. I was their second "internet order". I think it pays to start early and get to know who your gonna buy your truck from it helped alot.

I used that Peoples First interst rate that Edmunds offers on this sight, took it into my dealership and they beat that rate. Good for me. Interest rates are negotiable too...

A little late but again congratulations on placing your order. There is nothing like the feeling of ordering a brand new vehicle, with all the stuff you want. Enjoy the wait, the anticipation is half the fun.
I ordered my 2k Silverado in mid Oct/99 and it arrived almost 6 wks to the day. You won't have to wait too long I'm sure.
    Enjoy..........

    congrats and...'bout damn time.
get my pics back tomorrow with the fresh zaino bros. wax job and westin step bars installed. which reminds me...oh by the way. for those of you who said the step bars would be an easy install...they weren't exactly "fun". i imagine if you've got an impact wrench it wouldn't be too bad, but doing it with a socket set with no extensions is NOT fun. however, i wouldn't pay more than $20 to have them installed. it's not hard...just a pain in the rear - especially in the dark!

one other question. the directions stated to torque all bolts down to 65 ft-lbs. anyone have any idea what kind of torque an average strength man can put on a bolt with a 12" long ratchet? i don't have a torque wrench, so i just cinched 'em down as tight as i could. they feel pretty solid.

    thanks,
    kyle
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
The westin nerf bars you have are they for the 4 door? I totally forgot what u said u got. Are they black or chrome? Please let me know what kind you have and how much u paid. I think the black westin nerf bars for 4 door is gonna cost me $270. I think id rather pay and have em alredy installed when i go pick the truck up. Thanks

We need to hold up on congratulating Ryan till we are really sure he did in fact order it.

I can't wait till Bluebeast gets back to see what he'll require as real proof of this impending purchase, but I'm sure it will be good.

(PS, Ryan if by chance you really did , the finally do it Congratulations!!!! who cares what that sun burned Texan says anyway)
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Another nonbelieve oh well. But here is what i got.

I have the worksheet from the dealership that says the make model trim blah blah blah with the msrp $32028 then supplier price $27900 then tax $1395 total $29300 minus a $1000 deposit Then lastly i owe $28300 plus the accesories im having put on. I also have the window sticker print out fromt he computer which lists all options gas milage da da da. Technically like tim said its not ordered yet it actually goes into GM VOM system tomorrow morning. Hopefully itll be accepted and it wont be rejected because of the tires.

    Ryan

Oh yea i just figured it all out and i got the truck for $150 under invoice this seems like a very low amount considering i am using the supplier deal. Oh well no big deal
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
When I installed my Boards....2 spots they mounted were the cab bolts....as well as the frame and rockers.
When I un-bolted the cab bolts...2 were about 15 lbs. So I'd have to say as tight as you can get them with a 12" ratchet is way tight enough.

    Ryan,
Why not do it yourself??....You not the wrenching type?
I don't get satisfaction unless i do it.

Just put in a Furnace and ducts in the loft of the Barn type garage....never done it before...but it turned out better or just as good as any contractor. Never did brick walks either....but they turned out cool.

Experience is the best learning tool.

    Good Luck

i would like to do it but i want to pick the truck up and have it done already. I mean its going in for the bedliner might as well put em on then. Id rather have someone who does it everyday put it on than me (never installed them before) because then i know it will be installed the right way. Just seems easier to me. Oh yea Tim me and my dad are remodeling our basement totally (so as you can see from this i am the wrenching (drilling hammering) type. I like to get my hands dirty.

Your gonna put a moon roof in? Whos gonna put it in what brand? I think thats the only thing Gm is forgetting to put in their trucks (and 2 tone paint on the Lt's) the suburban and tahoes have em why not the silverado. I am scared to get an aftermarket one cause of possible leaks and what not.

My opinion is that ASC (American Sunroof Corporation / www.ascglobal.com) has the best quality out there. It is also backed by a 6yr warranty. I wish they would put more pics on their website of the controls and installs so you can get a better idea.

I have a friend that has been putting sunroofs in since the mid-70's and I trust his work explicitly. I saw the ASC installed in a Dodge Ram and '97 Chevy Surburban LT. Really liked it.

There are authorized dealers throughout the country that install them. Unfortuately, I agree with you and poor workmanship may lead to leaks.

Kyle, I just installed one of the two Westin nerf bars this past weekend (black, 3 dr.model)due to rain the other goes on this week. I agree they DO NOT go on as easy as they make it sound. As far as the torquing I went by the footprint left from the body mount rubber bumper. When I removed for installation you could see the paint outline so I retightened to that, I could only get the torque wrench onto the bolt for the rear bracket and after several turns at 65lbs. the bumper wash squased more than when I took it off so I backed off the initial 65lbs. setting, but everything is solid.

Ryan, $270 for the Westin's is a little high I only paid $199.95 for mine, there can't be that much of a difference between 3 & 4 door version, look around some more. You might check into the Eurobar, they are also a no drill unit & cheaper than Westin in black or stainless. I flipped a coin & went with the Westin.

Im also waiting for the gorhino sumatra series 4000 step bars to come out in the 4 dr version only have a 3 dr version now.

That $270 was a rough estimate they didnt have the 4 dr version out yet im gonna send a few emails and see different prices.

Dee Zee has the full tailgate protector that wraps right over the whale tail, worked great. The wrap style bed rail caps made from aluminum diamond plate were only $75, why get plastic GM version at that price? The red 3M tape is very strong, as Tim mentioned. Try www.theLAPD.com ( L.A. Performance Division) for great prices and service. -scott

SPEED, Lund now makes a bug guard specifically for the Silverado using the existing 5 square holes in underside of hood, you install the nylon plugs they give you & the screws go into that. The guard has elongated slots for adjustment, took me five minutes in the parking lot to install, very easy. Paid $65 for it at Cap City, Danbury, Conneticut.

RYAN, I'll have to get back to you on my part# for Westin nerfs, 25-1395 rings a bell but then again that was the 3 door version in black. The stainless were $299 & CPS were $349. All my paperwork is at home. I don't think the gorhino's are a no drill version.

    Thanks for the info. on the Lund bug guard. Two questions;

-I've read a number of posts regarding wind noise and bug guards. Have you experienced any wind noise, howling, etc. above the norm?

-Another item I've heard is a pain, is your own headlight reflection in the left corner (from driver's seat) from the bug guard. Don't know if this was a Lund. Any reflections at night?

    Scotay,
hell yeah that tape is strong....I touched my finger lightly on it and you could tell it's gonna hold real good. hasn't moved yet.

    Ryan,
So what if ya never did it before? They are no drill....right?....so what can you mess up?
My set of 4 Stainless Boards were $1000 and I had to drill 8 holes per side...as well as the cab bolts. I had fears with a new $34K truck...but what the hey...it worked out very good. I didn't want to drill that much...but these puppys are so heavy...you need good mounting.

You seem like a worker type.....give it a try man.

    Rayt,

I hear ya for time consuming. It wasn't hard..but it did take 4 guys using a hoist 10 hours for all 4 boards. (and yes...one guy was me...we used a friends hoist at work)

    Good Luck Ryan....er...I mean babs!

Our aftermarket guy is putting on another brand other than Lund..says he doesn't like the Lund one for the Silveradoos. Looks nice, and same price...can't remember if the problem was that it was too close to the hood, and hard to wash behind, or something else..I'm calling tomorrow to see if the running boards are in and paintied, so I'll ask again. Do you have your part number, in case he is talking about a different one, since the price was $59 installed?

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and girls, gather
around for a tale of "You gotta be kiddin me!".
    On January 17th I ordered:
    1500 LT ext cab sb fleetside 4x4 Z71, 5.3 V-8 ,
auto trans, autotrac, locking rear, Alum wheels,
P265 tires, tinted windows, 3.73 axle, flares
and the trailering pkg. I tracked the vehicle to
the point where is was in transit last week. Today
I called the dealer and He said, Your truck came in on Friday 03/10, unfortunately, we sold it to
someone else on Saturday 03/11. I ordered it through the fleet manager with no down payment because it was through my credit union and I was given the order number to track through GM CS
I am not sure what course of action I can take,
but I am very interested in hearing from anyone
that can site a similar situation and what the
dealer or GM did to rectify the situation.
    thanks in advance. bmc..

speedybird - i paid like, $40 at pep boys for a bugflector II bug guard. this one too, has the five holes set up to mount on the pre-existing holes under the hood lip. 5 minute install no problems. no wind noise, no problems with wiper fluid at 80 mph or otherwise. also...no reflection of the headlights either. don't know where that came from. also...no problem getting a sponge under it when car wash time comes. no complaints...prob'ly the best $40 and 5 minutes i've spent in a while.

ryan - i got the platinum cps 4 door version. ray was right, they were about $350, $375 with tax. email westin from their web site (www.westinautomotive.com) and they'll send you a list of local parts dealers that carry their stuff. you'll find a good price with one of them. they were a pain in the [non-permissible content removed], somewhat, to install, but frankly, i'm glad i did. i didn't know what "cab bolts" were before i installed them. and i'm a little offended at your comment that since you've never done it before you'd rather have someone else do it...so it gets done right. god knows i've never done that before either...and i'm pretty sure i got mine right. you didn't by any chance have to have an "expert" show you how the first time you got laid did you? ;) every once in awhile you gotta go out and figure stuff out on your own... hehe.

tim - four guys and a hoist??? i wish. i balanced the sob's on my frickin' chest as i hooked 'em up. course mine prob'ly don't weigh quite as much as yours. should have my pics back tomorrow, i'll scan 'em and send 'em too ya to post for me.

    kyle

    Send them Over.

I had so many brackets with mine...due to weight and size...that we would have spent too much time on the ground laying under it....so we decided to use a hoist...it was a good idea. I'd say on average 2-3 guys were working at a time. We really only needed 2...but the others guys wanted something to do that night....so I gave 'em something to do until 2:30 AM on a weekday.
We were going to stop at the cab boards....but one guy said.."we got this farr...might as well finish!"

You got the Chrome plated stainless right?

Looks better than Black in my opinion.

Only thing I don't like about solid stainless.....it gets a hazy look too easy due to it being softer. After a while of the edge being stepped on...it gets lightly scratched....but buffs out very easy back to it's pure luster.

When I sell the truck....these puppys are going with me to the next one.....unless the buyer wants to pay extra. I don't wish that install on anybody.

I liked the install on my old nerf bars better. they were all drill install though....no cab bolts.

Shoot the pics on over when you get them.

I had the GM Bug deflector installed when I got my 2k Silverado. It works good, no wind noise at any speed and seems to be a good solid unit. My 98 Silverado originally had the GM "Stick-on" bug deflector and it created serious wind noise. They eventually had to replace it with the screw on type. I don't think GM still offers the stick-on variety.
Yea Ryan, the Westin bars are pretty simple to install, if you have the right equipment. We have a couple of car hoists at our shop, and once you get the truck up to a comfortable working level, the job is easy and doesn't take very long, especially if you stand back and watch a mechanic do it, like I did. I agree with you though, they shouldn't charge you that much to do it for you, I would guess it didn't take my guy any more than 45 min to do both sides. This included the time to read the instructions since he had never put a set on before. Real happy so far with the Westin CPS units. (Picture @ Post #116)

<< I've noticed on 2 or 3 occasions that when I pull up to a red light, something in the transmission seems to disengage. Then when I take off at the green light, the transmission slips for 3/4 of a second before re-engaging.>>

Mine did this for the first time today. 2000 LT 5.3/4.10's approx 1800 miles on it. Let me know what your dealer has to say.

Kanton and Bob259 - the dealer replaced the steering shaft and the rattle/clunk still exists. They have now ordered the "upper steering shaft". A mechanic friend of mine seems to feel the problem lies in the bearing at the top of the shaft although he is a Chrysler mech.

What sort do you guys recommend, if any? I had one on my s-10, but it had those little bumper things that stick to the hood, one came off and it scratched up the hood. Ever since then I've been gun-shy of bug shields. Sounds like some of the newer ones sit off the hood? If so, can you get to the leading edge of the hood?

    By the way Ryan, Congrats!

I just got a set of smittybilt stainless bars for my three door for $306 delivered to my door. They have a lifetime warranty on the finish.
As fot the bug shields, I have a Genuine GM on mine. it already broke on the one end when i was washing the truck. I did hit it with my hand when i was washing the fender and it cracked it about 3 inchs long. I am very un happy with it. I had a prime design( i think that was what it was) on my old truck and it took ten times a harder hit and never broke.
  • bob259bob259 Member Posts: 280
odenmeyer - Sorry to hear the new steering shaft didn't work on yours. I know of 5 trucks here that it fixed the problem on. I just can't believe that GM is still having all these problems, while the numbers seem to be getting less they are still having startup problems. Keep me posted on the noise and how you make out.

    Ryan,
Just because someone "does it every day" doesn't mean they do it right. The last set of tires I had installed on my car cost the tire dealer 4 new rotors and the labor to install them. I specified the torque for the lug nuts at 80ftlbs and specifically stated NOT to use the air wrench. When the install was finished, I immediately checked to see what they torqued the lugs to. 150ftlbs, even though the service order clearly stated 80ftlbs. The rotors were seriously warped. Cost the dealer much more than my tires cost me and, yes - they do it every day.

    Werking,
If you torqued those bolts down as tight as you could get them, you most likely went WAY over 65ftlbs (unless of course you're a - uh, never mind). Over torquing can cause a bolt to fail.

    ABOUT THIS: and i'm a
little offended at your comment that since you've
never done it before you'd rather have someone else
do it...so it gets done right.

The reason i said what i said is because i dont really want to go messing around with a $30000 truck and why not make it easier on myself and when i go to the dealership to pick it up have them already installed? Whats wrong with that?
