have seen some stations that sell 86 octane. I always use the 87, and thought this was the lowest you could buy, but have seen it 86 in a couple of places. Don't know if it's only available in certain parts of the country...

when i get my pics back (hopefully in a week) and you can look at your monitor cuz my truck's too shiny, you might have to think twice about zaino being to shiny... :) j/k unto thine each his own. zaino's expensive (relative to what you can buy at walmart) but it looks GREAT, lasts and protects as long as a rain dance or turtle wax, and it goes on/comes off a lot easier too. my $0.02. as for all the aggie stuff...i'll just say this... beat navy!

Well, this is the infamous low end owner of a V6 ext. cab Silverado who likes to hear the great stories of how long the 4.3's last forever. I know most people own the 4.8's and the 5.3's but I went with the proven 4.3L V6 not only because of the cost but also the good things I've heard about these engines. Both the 4.8 and the 5.3's are relatively new and unproven as far as reliability goes, although they should do just as well. It's almost like an insult when I tell people I got a V6 instead of a V8, but I test drove both the 4.3 and the 5.3 and didn't see any significant difference as far as performance goes except the 5.3 LS was $6,000.00 more. If anyone has technical advise on the 4.3's or any advice, please share it with me.

The camera is an older Casio 300, 640x480. Does the job pretty well. You can kind of see it in the reflection of the TAMU sticker picture. I am thinking about getting a new one (this is borrowed from work), but I may just a digital camcorder that does both still and movies.

Back to the truck: I read that some were having a slight problem with pull to the right. I was too. I took mine in at 1000 miles to get a squeak, rattle and the alignment looked at. I thought the rattle and the squeak were of the same origin, but the squeak was actually coming from the right fender (tightened and lubed it, squeak gone). Tightened the dash, rattle gone. Aligned the truck, drives straight as an arrow (and seems to ride a bit smoother, but that may just be psychological).

I ahve yet to wax my 00 Silverado. I use Meguiars Gold Class on my wifes candy apple red Grand Caravan Sport. Plenty shiny enough. The Meguiars website says to use their Deep Crystal Polish first, then the wax. I use to do this with Mothers brand products on an Electric Blue (or was it medium blue) 87 IROC. Came out great every time.

I use the Meguiars Enurance tire dressing too. Works a lot better than plain 'ol ArmorAll. Several companies make a similar dressing, but I ahve only used the one.

My 2k LT has an 1157 stoplight bulb for it's DRL. This is a dual element lamp. When the DRL is on, it uses the bright filement. I've tried different combinations of headlights on, parking lights on, but can't make the dimmer filement come on. Anyone know the answer to this trivia question?

You mentioned that you purchased the black GM bed caps,(post 327 -Frozen VII mentions part number 12496453).

Question: Does it look exactly the same as the bed cap on the sportside models? Texture, color, etc. Your answer or anyone else who has a GM bed cap is very important to me. What did it cost, and does it has stake hole covers. How about the fit? Does it look like a bed liner with the top cut off? or better.

Anybody having problems with excessive oil consumption on a 5.3 Silverado?
    I have a Y2K Silverado 5.3 LS 4x4 with 4K miles. It’s using a quart of oil every 1000 to 1500 miles.
When I first called the dealer I was told it wasn’t unusual for a new engine to use a little oil. I was somewhat skeptical, but I’ve never owned a GM product before, so I accepted their explanation.
I changed the oil at 3K miles and then took a road trip of about 900 miles. When I checked the oil at the end of the trip it was down 1 quart.
The service advisor at the dealership told me that GM doesn’t think anything is wrong with using a quart every 2000 miles. That doesn’t sound right to me. I’ve never had a car use oil when it was brand new. Has anybody else heard of this?
I'm taking it in this week to have it looked at. I don't expect them to find anything. I have a bad feeling about this.

1st, Be sure you are measuring it consistently, on level ground. Check it on consecutive mornings.

2nd, Find out where it's going. A puddle in your driveway? Smoke out the tail pipe? You can put a white piece of cardboard in front of the exhaust pipe, when you warm it up in the morning. If it's blowing out the tail pipe, you'll soak the paper.

    3rd, do step 1 again.

By the way, yes I have read many reports of oil consumption, but most were from the F-body owners on http://www.ls1.com. Those guys can be very abusive, so who knows. Some do, others don't, or so it seems. I think in general, it's normal.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
no missing oil for me. Have 9000 miles on '00 Silverado 5.3. changed oil 3 times and no loss of oil between changes. Quart every 1000 miles sounds like too much to me.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
Those guys on ls1.com say the same thing, that the dealer tells them 1 qt/3000 miles, 1 qt/2000 miles, 1 qt/1000 miles is "normal." No rhyme or reason to it.

But I have to agree with poster above also. Mine doesn't move off the full mark between changes. But it takes 6.75 qts to bring it to the full line, if you also change the filter.

I add oil to the filter before screwing it on. Primes the oil pump faster. (Thanks for tip Cdean)

For my 5.3 Silverado - first 3K 1/2 quart, second 3K 1/4 quart, last 3K no usage I can measure. To me this is normal break in. If I was using a quart every 1,000 miles I would be worried. This is not normal.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
I use Mobil-1 5W-30, on every change, every 3000 miles, including the first change at 1500 miles. Have 23,250 miles now, 13 months of driving. It costs a little more, but I do it myself. I use the AC Delco PF59 oil filter exclusively, which I buy from the dealer. It too costs a little more, at $6.50 each, but the dealership gets a little cut, and I get a receipt for proof of maintenance, if ever required.

Changing synthetic oil every 3k is major overkill. I guess you like spending money and time laying on your back. I haven't decided on an interval once I switch to synthetic but it will be at least 5k miles. Even that is probably short.

What tool do people use to remove the filter? The access around the filter is very limited (6.0) so a "socket" type of tool seems required. Also, has anyone developed a good technique to not get covered in oil? One problem with the vertical filter is oil drips down like crazy all over your hand.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
Use a 6" socket extension with a 3/8 drive, oil filter wrench.

You're afraid of getting oil on your hands, and I'm changing it too often????

    Hey Jmendo,

Sounds like your truck is pretty similar to mine (except your is a 99). Have you had any problems worth noting (vibration, leaking, etc)? I have taken mine 3 times to a dealer close to work to investigate a minor oil leak. After a dye test they are saying it is leaking from an intake gasket (that is the only info they would give me). Anyone out there know of any good Chevy dealers in the MD/DC suburbs? The dealer I have been going to is Ourisman Chevy (only because it is convenient to work) and I am not too confident about letting them work on my engine.

Rich how can u forget about the fender flares to go along with the bedliner and 2-tone.

Obyone: Counting today 5 days WOOHOO!!!

Vince: Quit crying about getting your hands dirty they will come clean. haha just giving you some heck try wearing some gloves. (rubber gloves???)

You know what really kills your Gas milage. Putting sandbags (420 lbs plus a spare tire) in the back. Took all that out saturday and can notice the increase in mpg.
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
PF59 at AutoZone for around $3....

I follow the oil change light regardless of type of oil used.

No oil used first 1K. Ran crap outta it the next 2000 miles used almost 1 qt. Use about 1/3 to 1/2 qt every 3 to 4k since then, right now at 18k.

No problem with oil changes, normal wrench fits fine. I too, prefill the oil filter.
  • bluebeastbluebeast Member Posts: 258
Try changing your oil with medical surgical gloves, they work great!

Never tried Zaino, but Meguiars Gold Class "Clear coat prep & swirl reducer followed by Clear coat car wax" produced the best shine/protection that I've experienced in 25yrs. Probably cheaper & easier to get also.

Hey Bluebeast if I read Ryan's posts right we can have a party Saturday for the end of the longest 'Someday I'm Gonna Buy a Pickup' adventure I can remember. Congratulations Ryan... oops I'd better hold off till the weekend and see if you really sign the papers.

On fuel mileage, I think the fuel mileage of the new 5.3 is fantastic. I average only 2 1/10's less on average then my older V6 was getting, an it's a lot better then the new Tundra's everybody is trying to say are so great are getting in-town and on the road. 99 5.3 Z71 3.73's, in town Avg. 15.4 and Highway 19.3 mpg for a 4WD full size truck is not bad. That said I'll tell you how I feel about it when gas hits the $2.00 a gallon for regular they are predicting.
  • bluebeastbluebeast Member Posts: 258
I think Ryan needs to scan the actual papers and post'em on the web so we all can see that he is done blowing hot air. A picture of him by a truck will NOT due, he could just find a truck close to what he is buying and take a picture so he won't be embarrased that he made a statement that was just adolescent babble...thus RyanBAB (Ryan & shortened Babble).
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I first stated to use rubber gloves for the filter.

Why dont u believe me? I have the papers right in front of me at this very minute not signed yet though. Its form 1753 (gm supplier deal). Ok when i get it ill post pics and no i wont be lying either. Where can u find a blue Z71 with fender flares, black nerf bars, and a rhino sprayed in liner. A dealer back a month ago found a truck close to what i wanted but with power seats 2500 mls away. Kinda rare i guess.

It wont be adolescent babble. I still dont know why u dont believe me. Man ill send u the cancel deposit check if u want.

Bob thats cool we can have a party i am going fishing sunday in plymouth indiana so if u all know where its at come on down.

I did not notice any significant difference in performance in normal driving. My V6 2K Silverado performs fine. I will probably trade my pickup in every year on a new one - the V6 may actually enhance resale or trade-in value because of the perception of better gas mileage, even if it is only a couple more miles per gallon in city driving (assuming that gas prices remain high.)
I think it is curious that GMC and Silverado TV ads emphasize a "powerful V8 - just in case you need it someday." If I need a lot of power it means I'm really putting a strain on the truck. I kept my beat up 1973 Chev 454 pickup for that purpose. Even local trades people and contractors are buying V6 Silverados and GMCs. I think they know what they are doing, and they sure give their V6s a daily workout. Having said all that, I'll probably end up with a V8 next time, just because I want some of the creature comforts that come with the LS or LT. But if I decide to go with a base model, it will definitely be a V6 again.

Quad said he buys them at dealer to insure proof of maint. I'm sure he knows they are more expensive..hell...he even said so.

    Ryan,

who cares who said about gloves first.

You seem flustered man...who cares what people think...(you seem to)..

....Everyone else....I think I seen Ryan at the Toyota Dealer??...talking about trade in for a used s-10 or something?..in return for a Tundra?

He was asking about Flares or something??

( I betcha he can make up a real looking form on that lap top to fool all of us that he really has an order going)

Quadrunner500 is it true you can get the PF59 @ AutoZone now. We've been looking here in the NE and haven't found any AC PF59's at Kmart/WalMart or the usual parts house locations, they said there was a 1 - 2 year wait before they could sell them (must be to keep you going to the GM dealer). I've been using the Mobil1 ML206's, but the $10.00 each is a little pricey. I'll check Autozone tonight....
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Im not some lil hacker kidd. Trust me i know enough to get by.

I have been at a toyota dealer once. I will never go back again. Let me tell you id rather drive a piece of crap then drive a new tundra. The tundra can fit nicely in the back of my S-10.

Why does everyone doubt me??? Well im gonna show u all up very soon.

This is to respond to "ricobeach", no, I have not had any problems with my 4.3 as far as leaks, oil consumption, or annoying vibrations. It's a smooth runner and actually very quiet for a truck. The only problem I have encountered is not even engine related, I have a slightly misaligned hood and a clicking driver side door when I open it completely. As far as the engine goes, I've only heard good things from these V6's and it seems to be holding up on my end, although I only have 3,000 miles on it. I couldn't help you in the dealership category, I live in Oklahoma, but I do know you can take it to any Chevy or GM dealership for that matter and if they don't fix it, it's their obligation to fix it or give you a replacement engine.

The filter is available from Wal-Mart for $2.54 + tax. It is available in limited quantities from Pep Boys for $4.00 and change

Ill send pics after i take it offroading so u will know its mine alright. YOu probably dont think im gonna take it offroading either right? One of the reasons i am getting a full size truck. I talked to my uncle and he has a bunch of good spots to go ( he had a toyota 4x4 back in the day) I gotta show him what a real 4x4 does.

Remember, off roading is NOT a dirt road. I'll expect to see some real good shots of your truck at various precarious angles and a few deep mud hole shots. Otherwise your just "babbling" again.

Now i know ur from texas you talk more than i do just like this guy at work here. Always talking trash about everything. I dont know about u people from texas. HAHAHAHA

I dont know about mud maybe if it rains but where i am going is sandy. Actually the indiana dunes some of you might know where and what i am talking about. Its on lake michigan. Lots of hills and sand not much mud though unless i go down to southern indiana they have lots of places to go. I want to start off small then work up.

Has anyone looked at the pic i think its in the 99 silverado booklet? The picture of cal ripkin and his dad? I have it as my background on my computer here at work and i was just looking at it and its neat to see how over the years the trucks have evolved into what they are today. Unlike dodge and ford which went radical the chevys actually kept the same "look" just went rounder. I think this says alot about a company just make improvements over the old model just dont go radical and people will continue to buy it cause it really hasnt changed that much and it still looks great. Just thought id share this thought with you all.

I think we have Ryans new nick name.......you think so guys??

its really a Mazda whatever its called the ford ranger looking thing.

haha sorry i agree i need to calm down. Yu would never believe this but i am actually a shy kid. Just when it comes to trucks i become very vocal.

You guys are so cute coming up with a nickname for me thanks.

Ryan - I agree about the more gentler changes GM has implemented (not as radical as the others) and personally still like the look of previous body style, the new design is more ageeable with me everyday; and I like the Chevy over the GMC looks because the front of the hook retained more of the previous style. I must admit though, I've ordered a GMC. Why you ask - because I plan on putting a brush guard on the front which will hide that dip in the hood and I've found a GMC dealer in Dallas - Sewell that has been impeccable in the service department. I decided to stay with a dealer that I have a good relationship with. I was considering Chevy until my service manager told me about the stupid stuff GM does like not letting Chevy do GMC's warranty work and vice versa, so I just stuck with the GMC.

Speaking of literature - I don't know about Chevy's but GMC's 2000 Sierra book has a picture of what I believe is the 1999 interior. The difference is the stereo. They have changed the buttons and the CD player is now in the deck and the tape player is in the console for 2000 - in the SLT models at least. In the picture, they are reversed, like 1999. Maybe they were still cleaning out old inventory - not sure, but it caught my attention anyway.

Hope you Chevy people don't mind me posting here.

But I believe you!!!!! Just ordered the Westin Matte Black Powder Coat Nerf Bars for my truck, best deal that I found was directly thru them 199.95 + 5.95 hdl. Borla split sides are next in future after a few hours of overtime to cover cost.

QUAD: Mobil & GM must love you, do you have a money tree out back too? You don't need to document you bought the AC filter thru GM just that you bought the AC filter for your application whether it be thru K-Mart, Walmart, Ryanbabble Mart or whatever Mart. (just messin with ya Ryan) How itchy are ya now???????????
If you do your own maint. just document it in the owners manual section. That is all I have ever done & it served me well in a lemon law case against GM.
