    Meredith,

That's a pretty accurate description of the detonation/preignition/pinging problems some of the new Silverado owners have been having. Almost like a crackling sound at part throttle? So far, someone mentioned putting new spark plugs that are 1 range colder helped the problem almost entirely. If the problem persists, take it to the dealer and see what they say.

    Ryan,

I'm headed down to Lafayette on the 29th for Grand Prix weekend so if I see you on 31 or 25, I'll be sure to honk as I pass you at 75 in my POS teenager Grand Am. Congradulations!

Ryan....must have been a later 2000 change...cuz mine is a 2000.(Aug.99)..and it has CD in console. Also does not have headlight over ride...as some people say they can do?..

    Rwag,
I remember you saying something about side mirrors dimming a while back...and I said mine didn't....well...they still don't and I don't think they are supposed to?.....Brochure gave a fuzzy like indication they did....but nobody has ever said they did. Rear is nice...but sides are not needed....just don't look into them!
    LOL

    Good Luck

Didn't hear the noise this morning on the way to work. It must only occur when it's warm.. the sound is more like a tamborine than a rattle. It's metallic, like something is loose, but when I either let off the gas or press harder it goes away. It only seems to occur when I'm on a flat stretch or a slight incline. I'll monitor it closely.

Yes, my dealership is open Sunday, not Saturday. They can only be open 1 day on weekends and they chose Sunday. Go figure..

Just to let you all know, the front end knock that I kept complaining about; is finally gone!!!

It was a bad Rancho RS9000 shock, we think the piston in side was knocking around. They warrantied it. Put the new shock in yesterday, and walla the knock is gone.

    I am so happy!!

  • jweimholtjweimholt Member Posts: 15
I'm glad to hear that all it took to clear out your problem was a replacement shock.
I'm using Rancho's RSX. They seem to be holding up well ( 5k on lift ).
I think i will be contacting superlift or some other double cardan shaft mfg. as well.
The vibration I experience in 4hi or auto trac is not right.
It was also suggested to me to rotate my tires every 3K. Service manager I'm friends with says lifts cause premature crowning on the tires.
    Ever hear this?
Hope you continue to enjoy your truck as much as I do mine.

After driving to Las Vegas on a dark road with everyone's lights blinding me as they bounce of the side view mirrors into my eyes (not with my Silverado but with my wife's Sebring), yes, I would like the side mirrors to dim. And the model Chevy uses is apparently supposed to dim according to the manufacturer's website. I am wondering if liability concerns made them decide to turn that feature off. Anyone have a shop manual?

Anyway, you can actually add one of those mirrors to ANY car f you want. Check out the sites I listed above (post 422)

Tim: The very first 2000 models to my dealer had the CD in the radio, cassette in the lower dash (one reason I am glad I got a '99). Interestingly, the '00 model was EXACTLY my model one model year later, and it arrived only about a month after mine. Anyway, I bet yours was a very early '00 and they were using up old parts (or the new ones were in short supply). All this time I thought you had a '99.

    Meredith,

My '00 5.3L has the same noise. Earlier in this area, someone had gone to great lengths to fix it. First, he found that GM has a new programming for the engine computer to help out. Get your dealer to do this. Second, he put a colder thermostat on the coolant. (a 180 degree I think, the OEM must be 190 or 200, I've heard a company called Hypertech recommends a 160) And finally he put in colder spark plugs, and said that took care of it 100%.

Definatly do the first tip, the other two are at your discretion. I'm thinking about the colder thermostat myself, but concerned this might change emisions or fuel economy. Though, I'm still amazed that I can get over 20mpg if I baby the truck on the highway.

One thing I can say is higher octane fuel didn't do anything for the noise, but did lower my mpg. I'm having the new programming done Monday, I'll let everyone know what that does to the noise on mine.

I talked to the place where I ordered my Hypertech and they said they recalled them. He said something about transmission shifting problems. Said he talked to hypertech directly. Anyway, he's refunding my money cause he can't get one. Where did you get yours???
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    Nope....2000 Model...Delivered Aug.17th....made the 3rd week of 2000 2500 production (Aug 2nd)

I'm happy with the CD in the console...i just never payed attention to any others..until last week when I saw it in the Head unit instead of the console...
So yeah.....either new parts were not readu yet?..or old parts being used up?...Who knows?..I've had it a while now..

    Best damn truck I ever owned.....can't wait for a 2002 2500!

    - Tim
  • kantonkanton Member Posts: 142
That is interesting about a recall. I have had no problems with my programmer and the transmission shifts fine, even with the firm shift mode selected. The programmer was just released on the 11th of the month, I find it hard to believe their is a recall already. They have had the '99 programmer out for over a year now, they also delayed the release of the 2000 to make sure it was just right. I will call Hypertech on Monday to verify this myself. I ordered mine from Truck Performance. Check out their website for the number.

    Good luck,

from thunderracing.com and they haven't heard of any recall either for my '00 5.3...
  • gnippergnipper Member Posts: 120
I received my HPP a week and a half ago - 2000 Z71 5.3L 4.10 rearend - it recognized and decoded my VIN but the "Calibration" in the unit didn't match my truck. The HPP part number was correct according to Hypertech, but they assumed GM has added or changed something else to the computer program. I sent it back this past week. Called Thursday, they don't have an answer yet, but I was told that GM supplies them with all of the programming information on CD, so they would review and see what has changed, they thought it would be back to me this week. My truck was just built on 3/20 so there may be changes. There was no mention of a general recall. Hopefully I'll know by Wednesday.

I was given the impression that the outside mirrors would also dim - and they don't, but the book also says a solid black truck with fender flares will be painted black - and they are not - they come in the black matte plastic. But the literature from GM in the back says any and all thing are subject to change and there are no guarantees. That is just a reminder that they are the big guy and we are the little guy and when they want to change something they will.

By the way - GM does use the auto dimming outside mirrors on other vehicles, I've driven a Bravada that had them - it was nice on a vehicle that sits lower to the ground.

I must say though - I wait all week while I'm out of town, just to get home to drive my truck. It is the best machine I've driven in a long time. I'm glad to say that I haven't had the problems others have experienced. Perfect so far - except for the drivers seat - the back power lumbar has a mind of its own and while the truck is sitting it will readjust on its own. Every time I get in the truck it is stuck in the middle of my back - anyone else experience this?

    Sorry for the long post.

I didn't realize you were that close. I'm working on a project in Napa - fly into Oakland ever week. You ever get down to Napa? I'd like to see your truck with all of the mods.

One of the things that really helps my week is that the National Car Rental at Oakland has about 5 Chevy 5.3 L, 4X4, xtnd cabs. The women there have got to know me and they know that is what I like so they save me one every week. Its nice getting to drive one of them vs. a small Grand Am or something like that !

  • gnippergnipper Member Posts: 120
Forgot something earlier. Anyone ever have any problems with the passlock system? I locked the keys in the rental truck I was driving last week, and you aren't supposed to be able to do that. I felt pretty stupid, it was my fault - unlocked the doors manually (didn't remove the key from the ignition at all) went to the passenger side to get some stuff out, hit the door lock button - and both doors locked. The drivers side door is supposed to unlock again if the key is in the ignition (my truck at home does this) but the rental didn't.

Just wondering if anyone has seen this happen?
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
Passlock is the security system that won't allow the truck to start without the key. It is separate from the feature tat doesn't allow the drivers door to lock with the key in the ignition. That feature only works if the drivers door is open.

    Richard
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
I think the door lock thing foes like this...If the Key is in the ignition and the truck is NOT running while the door is open...it won't lock...I believe it will lock if the door is open and the truck is running....I'd have to go outside to check..and I don't feel like getting up just now...LOL

    Greg,
I've had a couple times where the lumbar was picky and wouldn't work for a few seconds?...then all of a sudden it's back to working. Only happened 2-3 times..no biggee. Never had it inflate all by it's self?

mine has auto inflated a couple of times too. I think if it sits out in the sun the temperature inside increase and cause the pressure to build?? The only time I've noticed it is when I park mine outside (which is rare)...

When traveling at speeds of 55 or higher there is a noise from around the windshield. I think it is the windshield molding flapping in the wind, I'm not sure. Has anyone had the same problem or heard of this problem? If so, what was the solution?
I have a 3/00, LS with 650 miles on it. Everything else seems great!

i had that same problem but, only after
installing my bug guard. thanks to Obyone i was
able to pinpoint the problem to the vertical trim

at the outer edge of the windshield. the wind
catches the trim and begins a fluttering that
makes a popping like sound. my dealer sent me to
their glass shop where they gave me a tube of
their polyurethane sealant. i prefer to do some
things myself but, my dealer said there would'nt
be a problem to have the glass shop do it if i
preferred also. anyway, they also said that bug
guards may cause the problem and sealing the trim

    ...RED
to the windshield would eliminate the noise.
read somewhere that a dealer was trying to tell a

customer that the bug guard had to come off.
don't let them fool you into believing that it is

the only solution. hope this helps.

Where do i begin. Ok Drove it home and wow its amazing. Quiet comfy GREAT TRUCK. The truck had 93 mls on it as expected. Brother even asked if the truck was running when we were stopped in a parking lot. Coming home i did between 55 and 70 on the highway i kept the RPMS low. Great story i was coming home and this guy in a ford pulling a boat came along side of me and the passenger look like he broke his neck looking at mine. It was great its getting alot of looks trust me. THe black nerf bars look awesome with the flares. The wade bedrail caps math the liner great. Also the lund interceptor is great. No noises vibrations nothin at all. I drove home packed up and went fishing. Filled up this afternoon and i got 16.4 mpg mostly highway about 80%. Im not big on MPG but i thought u all might like to know. Got the truck with 93 miles on it it now has 470 mls. Its sucks washing it i needed a damn ladder (im 6'3 too) my dogg loves the bed especially when it was wet he layed there and wouldnt come out. Sorry if this doesnt make sense im still not all there haha.

There are no words to totally describe this truck. ITS AWESOME!!!

Finally...............the babblers truck is in!!!!! Now, tell us all about washing your truck, do you start at the top and work down? Car wash that you use? Do you have a water softner? Do you dry with a 100% cotton towel or the absorber? Please respond quickly, I can't wait to hear all the details!!!!
  • thrashersthrashers Member Posts: 14
Does anybody know where the best place is online to buy Tracrac ladder racks? What about side steps (Westin?) I also was wondering if anybody could offer suggestions on a spray-on bedliner in the Atlanta area.

This is all for my '00 1500 Z71 LS. I got it Friday night. It was actually sitting on the lot. I think it had been there for a couple weeks.

I guess I'll just go to Midas for my Flowmaster. I did that with my Ram and loved it. I hope I will be as pleased with it on the Silverado.

I was also trying to get some information on that engine hour meter. Is it for us or for the dealer during a trade-in, for them to see how the truck was used?

    Thank you for your help.

Congrats on finally getting the new "Beast" Ryan.
I haven't been posting for a while, but I have been keeping up with the "Blow by Blow" waiting for the big day. Sounds like you are happy with your choice of vehicles so far, and you should continue to be. I've had mine since December and although I don't have many miles on it yet, everything has been just fine. I used to keep a list on my new vehicles so when they went in for service, I would remember all the nit pickin problems but so far, my pen has remained in my pocket. Enjoy.......

DAMMIT washed the truck and last night it rained. Wont fit in the garage 2 ft to long.

Tim i installed wade bedrail caps and lund interceptor most people have done and talked about this those were simple. The flaps werent that easy but not that hard. My mom took some pics last night has the dogg in the back. Hopefully they turn out.

Blue I started with the roof. I used turtle wax car wash. Dryed with 100% cotton towels (i bought a camisole but you have to wash with dish water then ring out so i didnt use that). I bought a nice wash mitt (walmart) nice and soft. Thats it oh i used a lil bit of wax on the door cause the dealership left water spots and it wouldnt come off. (wax dont ask me what kind but i believe its 3M). No water softener.

Now if it just would stop raining i could go wash it again hahahaha. Damn Rain

Could you be accidently hitting the dome override button?

When depressed it causes the dome lights not to work. When not pushed in, the dome lights work normally.

Tim, back in Post #404 about the GMO program, you mentioned that the dealer gets paid by GM later in the process. I didn't know they were getting anything on the deal. I guess I figured they were just getting screwed in the deal. Glad to hear they make something on it. Knowing that, I now will call my prefered dealer, who I was going to stay away from, because I didn't want the guy to get screwed just because he was being nice to me. He is this small rural dealer near Waco Texas. Mike Gloff, something like Gloff Motors, I highly recommend him to anyone in Texas. you will not find a nicer guy around, and on top of that, he sells cars. Anyway how much of a cut do they get, or are they still getting the shaft on the GMO deals?

Ryan, congratulations on the truck. Sounds awesome! Have fun.
  • anonymousanonymous Member Posts: 314
When first happened tried pushing button
    - rotating the dail - even the door switches.
Truck has never been in the rain and only
washed maybe 3 times so don't believe a
moisture problem. both doors are affected
so much have a central switch somewhere.

I know that I have read something on this subject before, but what is the best product to use to keep the cast aluminum wheels looking their best? I live in Michigan and have heard that there is a protective coating on these wheels that can wear off and allow the road salt to cause pits. Anything that can be applied regularly to prevent this?

    Kevin
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
What i noticed about these aluminum wheels is brake dust. I had it pretty bad my friend has a 99 (old bodystyle) gmc and i showed him my truck yesterday and he noticed it and told me to get he brake dust covers. Anyone have em? Do they work good???

    Thanks

    Roger350,

Say a dealer sells a truck for $200 over invoice...he gets the $200....plus after GM sends him a 3% holdback amount.
Since my 2500 was about $1700 under invoice...obviously he did not make money there.

Since it is ordered...the dealer is actually not even buying from GM...just making the transfer so to speak. I would imagine he gets his holdback amount...as well as maybe a little something extra?
Some dealers don't want to mess with it...they only want to sell off the lot. I don't blame them...you have to wait longer...deal with the customers.."is it in yet!?"....etc.. A new model such as the Duramax HD may be hard to find a GMO deal?....have to look and see...

My salesman said he liked selling those expensive trucks to me...and said he would get about $350 for selling it...so I'd imagine the dealer gets a boat load more than that out of the deal..?

    Good Luck

    Ryan,
Get used to it....I washed mine yesterday also...and it's raining pretty good here....oh well. As for brake dust...I don't have a problem...but have noticed on other vehicles that dust doesn't stick as good if you be carefull with the tire glaze...as not to get it on the wheels.

    - Tim
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
Storch, the aluminum wheels on the Silverado are clear coated. I use the same wax as on the body to keep them looking like new.

Ryan, brake dust doesn't seem to be a problem on these trucks. It may be a new brake lining material, but I haven't seen a single Silverado with brake dust build up on the wheels. I've seen it on everything else, and was going to buy the dust shields, but now I don't think it is needed. Don't worry about it.

Congrats on the new truck. Mine was built last Friday. 31 days from order to build date for a 2500. About 10 more days for delivery.

Use a genuine chamoix to dry, not terry cloth...
  • wight1wight1 Member Posts: 218
I think I've seen some previous posts on this, but can't find them now, so bear with me for asking something that's maybe already been covered.

Owner's manual says to change rear axle fluid after the first 500 miles of trailer towing. I'm coming up on that pretty soon. Dealer's service advisor says axle fluid change described in the OM is only necessary in the locking differentials, which mine is not. Should I change it or not?

Also, should I use only GM synthetic axle fluid, or is Mobil 1 or Valvoline synthetic OK? I'm sure the GM fluid is about 3 to 4 times as much as the after market stuff.

dude, a camisole is a piece of lingerie. i'm hoping you bought a chamoix. you said you bought a small one for $10. that's about right. if you can get real deer skin, that's even better. but for now, the one you have is fine. as for it getting expensive, it'll last you for a long time if you take care of it. it's not a one-use and throw away kinda deal. i've had mine for over two years (been using it on two cars, too!) and it's still fine. wipe the water off the paint, wring the chamoix out, repeat. when done, wring it out real good and let it dry out completely - i throw mine over the step ladder i bought while i detail the inside. store on a shelf with the rest of your cleaning stuff, and it will be fine. the only time you need to worry about it is if you drop it. make sure you get any/all gravel, dirt, and debris off it so you don't scratch your paint the next time you use it. o/w, keep it stored clean and dry and it will last you a long time. congrats and good luck!!!

You telling me you are going to complain about $10 for a small Chamois?....after spending $30,000 on a truck?
Seems like a cheap investment....cotton towels still leave haze marks...and that annoying lint.

use a good Chamois like Kyle said....or even better....use a high pressure air hose to blow it off.

All the wipe..wring out..wipe..wring out..get's old...but the finished product is farr better.

    Good Luck
