I like the Caddy. The Wide Load hot rod is weird, and defiently not worth the $95k in my books. Maybe he spent that much building it but doesn't mean he'll get that money back.

I think even at $25k he'd have a hard time finding a buyer.

Now if you're really good with cars you can identify which car the hot rod's headlights came from. ;)

That has to be the most insane ask ever posted here. I'd rather have a Ferrari thank you very much

The Caddy is a very cool ride....Lots of flash for not much cash. You could follow the Shiftright rule and drive it till it needs more work than it's worth, and add the Lokki variation - Leave it in a Shopping Mall parking lot with the keys in it.

The wide load was somebody's fun project that just went on and on and now he's come to believe his own propaganda that it's worth something.

Finally, to be honest, old Porsches scare me. You can spend way too much money on an old Porsche and STILL not be able to drive it..... Isn't there an old German curse -"May someone give you a free 20 year old Porsche that just needs a little work!" ?

What is rare about an Porsche SC Targa? They made about 27,000 of them. Oh, it's the BLUE that's rare. Oh well, blue instead of red or white, that's gotta be worth double....heh...heh...

The scary part about old 911s is the engine...if that baby blows up, you have totalled the car right on the spot. And there's no cheap way out. You could find somebody else's clapped out old used engine for $4,000 and then what have you got? No "patchin" a Porsche engine like you could with a VW. Ka-Boominflugen!

Cylinder leakdown test is MANDATORY and of course, up on the rack rust and collision inspection. Nice thing about the Targas is that if they are rusted the doors won't close, being a unibody and all. So you know right away when to walk away.

190D For parts only. I bet it would cost $4k to fix it. BioDiesel fans can salvage the motor.

E300 Diesel: nice looking for the year. Looks like they maintained it well too.

In fact, I DO :) know of a "good home" for that '85 Mercedes--it's called Ace Wrecking.

Pinto -- yes with the popular "did someone leave two pounds of ball bearings in the clothes dryer" 2300 engine.

Mercedes 300D -- he might get that price if the Northwest hasn't come to realize that the Dutch diesel tulip bubble has already burst.
  • hpmctorquehpmctorque Member Posts: 4,600
I've always liked the styling and the proportions of the 190, but Shifty and I believe you too, and others, have warned to stay away, that they're trouble. So I have. Do I have it right, though, that while the 2.3s were plagued by head gasket failures, among other problems, the six cylinder 190 2.6s at least don't have that problem? Also, hopefully, because the 190 had been in production for a few years before the 2.6 became available, they had time to correct some of the electrical and other issues. Or is that just wishful thinking?

Now, what about the 190 2.2 diesel? Was it a durable and reliable engine, or was that engine not as good as the earlier 240D engines? I assume that, aside from the engine, which is the component about which I'm inquiring, the 190D must have had the the same "stay away" issues as the 2.3 gassers.

I'm asking because every time I see a nice 190 I'm tempted, but reason always prevails. Funny how nice looking quickly becomes ugly when a car is troublesome.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,670
Yes, I believe the 2.6 is the best engine for that car. It too needs a little maintenance, they are known for the occasional head gasket failure or slow oil burning (maybe no more than any normal European I6), but not like the 2.3. At the end of the model run the 190 was even made in a 2.6 sportline with a 5-speed, and this was sold in NA. It's a rare car in that trim, and could be a little fun.

I think the later 2.5 diesel is the better one for the W201.

67 Rolls -- yes it has a lot of parts on it, but the question is...are there any GOOD parts left on it? Interior and chrome look wasted, and we know anything with a seal or gasket has had it, ...... which leaves us with a dusty and probably seized engine, some sheet metal, brake drums, knobs and switches, a driveshaft, a differential, and a few electrical motors....$3,000? I don't think so. I'm thinkin' $1,200 tops.

I would have loved that when I was a kid. A play car.

I remember when I was in grade school, some kids I knew lived on a house on a large piece of property, and when they bought it, some things came with it, like a long-unused maybe 1954-55 Ford pickup. As their parents had no use for it, they'd let the kids play on/in it. I was somewhat jealous, I wanted something like that to play in. The kids didn't actually tear it up either, they'd just pretend to drive or climb on it, and it was in decent condition as this was in an arid area. I think some hot-rodder ended up offering them more money than they could resist for it.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,670
And the E36 didn't come to NA until MY 1992, I am pretty sure.

I bet it's some shady neglected grey market car.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
The BMW reminded me of a customer who I had at Honda. She wanted a Civic and wanted to trade in her 91 or 92 M3 sedan.

Upon further questioning she told me here family friend imported it from Japan. When I went out to look at the car it was an E36 4 door, with M badging, but had no special stictching on the seats, no M signage ojn the motor, and it was an automatic with few options.

Furthermore the registration read that it's a 5 series. :confuse:

I told her she'd better go/run back to her "family" friend" to explain exactly what he sold her.

The 2.2 isn't a bad engine, just slow. It's about like putting a Smart engine in a Cobalt. The 2.5 Turbo is the way to go on a 190D, but those are rare as hell on this continent and priced accordingly.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,670
I bet there have been a lot of suspicious cars coming into Canada over the past few years, especially from Japan.

I have seen on the Aussie/NZ market many frown upon Japan imports, and in the UK this is also somewhat true, as one must be careful. Many abused and repaired cars come over, even though they pass inspection they can be disasters to those who know the cars.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
Yeah there's a ton of them here. I subscribe to a place call Japan Auto Direct, which has daily new [non-permissible content removed] car listings, and there's some decent deals to be had, but many cars look absued.

Does that year Range Rover still have the famous Explode-a-Tronic V8 engine with the cylinder sleeves that love to dance?

Mercedes 240D -- advanced case of hyperbolia---a common but near-fatal illness caused by inhalation of said fumes. "Only" 40 mpg and 500,000 guaranteed miles? Try 25 mpg and engine rebuilds at about 225K max. Welcome to reality.

71 Chevelle -- EWWWW.....yes you *can* get high teens for a custom '71 Chevelle but only for a tasteful one.

    2001 Prius -- not a bad deal but phew.....UGH-LEE.

84 Dodge Rampage Show Car -- I find the rust on the fuel lines particularly appealing. The judges are gonna *love* that.

That Range Rover - I don't know if it has that 'Explode-a-Tronic', but I am VERY impressed to learn that it has: "Headlight control with time delay switch-off dusk sensor and auto off with ignition, Day time running lights, Driver front airbag with multi-stage deployment passenger front airbag with occupant sensors and multi-stage deployment, Front side airbag, High pressure headlight cleaners, Front power windows with one one-touch rear power windows, Navigational systems : information type: full map and voice and touch screen controls DVD and color
Door entry light, Disc autochanger dashboard"

Glad he didn't waste any space listing all the things that actually make a Range Rover special! Those 'High pressure headlight cleaners' are what I'm really looking for!

I think the RRover is typical scam.

Scammer copies and pastes photos from a legit ad, and copies part of the specs, most of the time not paying attention to what's written.

Add an unbelievable price, don't give out a phone number, and then once the prospect email him, they'll be an excuse or storyt for the low price (moving , must sellnow, c ar is in a shipping container already etc......).

Victim then wires moneyt that they'll never see again.

I haven't received a reply for the inquiry I sent in on it yet.

Only $975 to fix that "dent"? Maybe if you bough $975 worth of bondo and black paint!

I also like it when they put the word "only" in front of a high mileage. Yeah, maybe 136K miles over 14 model years is "only" about 9700-9800 miles per year. So by that reasoning, can I say my 41 model year old Dart, which has averaged 8243 miles per year, has "only" 338,000 miles. :P
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
GEEZ you'll never bang that dent out. The car needs a whole new fender welded on.

The RR was certainly a scam ad, likely Nigerian. As you say, they copy and paste without paying attention.

M3 seems like an ok deal. However i'm always suspicious of Salvage title cars who's owners say had "small", or"minor" hits. Insurance companies don't write off cars with minimal damage so fast.

The Kermack GT... why can't people put NORMAL photos in the ad. There's a photo of a 911 there (for comparisons?), but the rest of the pics for such a one off car are lousy imo.

How hard is it to take 4 photos: front right quarter, rear left quarter, interior, and engine.

"two liter air cooled, electronic fuel injected and turboed"

Is this a turbo VW engine?---oh, no, that is a very bad idea. They can hardly withstand their own stock horsepower.

I thought these had German Ford V-6 engines as well.

With the complexity of modern cars, collision repair has gotten awfully expensive. My wife had an accident last year with my 03 Altima. It was a high hit so no frame damage and even the fenders were fine but it required a new hood, radiator, radiator support and air bags. The tab came out to about 9 grand. If the car wasn't written up as excellent condition or if that accident happened today instead of tomorrow, it would have been totalled but the damage really wasn't horrible. Maybe there are a few salvage title cars that really weren't creamed that badly?
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 20,970
if you link to my carspace, there is a picture of my expedition that had about 9k damage on it, including a tweaked frame. the repairs seemed to work out ok, although they took more than 1 shop to fix it.

I missed out on an opportunity to pick up a nice old mastodon, dirt cheap. A friend of my mechanic had a 1977 Chrysler New Yorker, 4-door hardtop. Like this:
    image
    but in forest green.

I'd actually heard about the car a few months ago, and that the guy only wanted $1500 for it. Supposedly it was in pretty nice shape, although I never saw it. Well, it's sold, for $1000, and on its way to Florida. When it was for sale, I tried to force myself to not think about it, but now that it's gone, I'm sorta kicking myself for not going to look at it!

I know it's a car with no upside to it, and a horrible thing to even think about in this economy, and the uncertainty of fuel prices. Still, I've always admired the beasts.

Oh well, probably for the best that I didn't buy it. Because then I'd have NINE cars right now, and probably wouldn't have been nearly as receptive to getting all the work that I'm having done to my '67 Catalina convertible.

Speaking of the Catalina, the mechanic still has it. The top is on backorder, and that's probably going to delay things at least two weeks. I guess I'll have that car back just in time for the first snow!

Oh, and while I was at the mechanic's shop, I saw a 1959 Dodge Coronet 4-door sedan, that he's working on. It has a 361-4bbl, and aftermarket air conditioning. It's pretty ratty, and needs an engine rebuild, but my mechanic says the owner's probably going to go all-out on the car. He already had it converted to disc brakes up front, and a more modern rear drum setup, that gets rid of the tapered axles and the drums you need a special wheel puller to get off.

The car's actually not a bad 50-footer, but up close you can see it's kinda ratty. Still, it's a neat thing to see.
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 20,970
i like that there was enough area across the front of the car to offset the front plate.
it doesn't mess up the grille area. i don't really like the plastic front plate adapters put on a lot of cars in states like ct, which requires front and back plates.
the front of the car is very 'lincoln like'.

Damn flimsy little furrin fall-apart cars. :P At least when the drunk in the old early 70's F-150 hit the telephone pole in front of my house, that truck proved its strength by not only taking down that pole, but also the one behind it! :surprise:
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Yeah, modern cars just GIVE UP, that's true. My brother's 48 Packard would have snapped that pole off like a #2 pencil and we could have buffed out the damage.
  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
However, you might have had to buff your brother off of his undamaged metal dash. Sort of a tradeoff.
