More stealthy than the vette was the Fiero. All plastic and composite body, radiator angled down, frame made up of 300+ pieces of irregular angles, and the engine in the back. Drove radar nuts, especially if you removed the front plate and bracket. Which I did, of course.

Actually hit a radar trap in Arkansas one day. The big discs hauled it down really quick, and as I went by I could see the deputy pointing the gun and shaking it. A buddy who was a cop said they were tricky to get a lock on, especially if you were hard on the brakes. He would pull one over just to let them know he knew they were speeding, even if he couldn't prove it. :shades:

The windows are so hazy in that Chrysler that you can take it and just like in a movie terrorize the local bad drivers with it. N obody would ever see your face behind that windhshield!! Just like the Duel.

It's a *very* rare model apparently. It says it has a door in the trunk.

Or some cheesy made-for-cable movie, like that one with the child molester in the black '69 Charger terrorizing the short-bus driver. "Wheels of Terror", or something like that?

I actually kinda like that car, although the "ran when permanently parked" part doesn't give me the warm fuzzies. If I could see proof that it could move under its own power...and you could clean it up without it falling apart on you, I'd be tempted to give it a spot in my yard. Well, if it was free!

That blows my mind, that he can fir a door to that tank in his trunk. I'm not sure I could fit a door to our mini-van inside the mini-van.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,113
That era of Mopar C-body had a HUGE trunk. It was fairly shallow, so you couldn't store anything tall in it, but it was wide in all directions (fore/aft and front-to-back).

Also, with a lot of those old cars, the doors really aren't as big as you might think. The car itself is a mastodon, but the doors themselves probably aren't any bigger than a modern compact. Cars may be smaller these days, but they make the doors bigger for ease of entry/exit.

I had a '67 Newport 2-door hardtop...same generation, but a fairly heavy restyle. It had a huge trunk itself, but I think the '65-66 was even larger.

It was probably the fact that you got on the brakes real hard is what saved you. I think, at one time, the radar guns used by law enforcement had a "reasonableness check" (call it that for lack of a better term), in that the unit made a number of readings over a short period of time, and if the readings differed by some amount, it threw them all out.

I don't know if current state-of-the-art law enforcement radars do that or not, but I still use that technique if the need arises. Not that I would speed, of course

I really don't think the fiberglass did much of anything to the older style X-band radar units. X-band energy is just not attenuated that much by an eight inch of fiberglass. As was said, there's still all that metal behind the fiberglass anyway.

Fiberglass and other non-metallic materials attenuate the signal more at the higher frequencies, Ku and Ka, that a lot of the newer radars use.

i bought an 83 turbo coupe, black with red interior.
had a lot of fun with it, but whacked it up and traded it on an 86 mustang gt.

The last pic of the set with your '67 Catalina must be an old one as I see your ex-police Gran Fury and Newport in it. Did that guy ever come back to pick up the Dart?
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Heck, I'm partial to those turquoise colors they had back in the 1950s. I'm constantly thinking of painting one of the rooms in my house a '50s shade of turquoise and the moldings gloss white.
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 21,008
when we moved in our house 10+ years ago, every room was an off white color.
now there are 19 different colors, plus a couple of closets that i painted with a color that i didn't use as originally intended.
paint is cheap. go for it. i recommend priming first.
the walls look a lot flatter when the finish paint is applied.
some of the colors are reproductions of old colonial colors, so i guess it was decided to hold them, not fold them. :)

(And what did you paid that color???)

On topic: would you paint a project car that color? :P
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,113
Yeah, that last pic was taken back in 1998. Heck, all four of those cars in the back are gone now! Well, the Dart's not gone yet, the guy paid for it at least...so as far as I'm concerned it's no longer mine, at least! I think the pic before it, with the top up, was taken in 1999, just after I bought my Intrepid.

I kinda like that car. Looks like it's all business and no pretense or flash. It looks like a refrigerator compared to a Chevelle, Tempest, etc of the era, but that's part of its charm!

One car I'd really like to get ahold of one day (when I have the finances and the space) is a '68-70 Plymouth Satellite or a '68-69 Dodge Coronet hardtop coupe. Nothing too fancy, just a 318, or maybe a 383. Only problem is, I think most people are turning them into clones of Roadrunners, Superbees, GTXes, etc. A monstrous 440 would be cool, but I want one that I could drive on a regular basis, and the 318 wouldn't be too horrible on gas.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have just sunk some money back into my '68 Dart to get it roadworthy again, but after two of those things and over 112,000 miles combined, I'm sort of Darted out!
  • oregonboyoregonboy Member Posts: 1,650
Andre, you do seem to get attached to your cars. I think that it was time to let the Dart go. From the little that I remember of what you have told us about it, I think that it was a losing proposition: too far gone to justify the expense to set it right.

If you really want to relive the "Dart experience", I'm sure that you could find a fairly nice example for not too much money. In the current economic climate, I am already seeing people trying to unload their extra vehicles to free up some cash.

With older cars, like your Dart, there is usually no lien holder, so the seller can drop the price to whatever level it takes to find a buyer. With newer cars, that is frequently not an option, because there is a balance due to the bank that must be paid before the deal can be done.

"So long old friend, good-bye Dart..."

I looked at a 1964 Pontiac Bonneville convertible that was for sale locally. I think its original color was "dusty rose", sort of a red metallic. Unfortunately, it had been repainted lavender. The car had issues galore that I probably could have tolerated. But that color was just the icing on the cake. I just couldn't bring myself to do it!
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,894
I looked at the manufacturer's site directly on that deposit ad, and they did have a deposit listed for the 2009 production, but $1000 compared to the craigslist ad of $5000. Seems like a bit of a scam to me, by whomever put that thing together.....

I've always been fascinated by that color GM called "orchid mist" back in 1965, the only year it was used, IIRC. I think everyone but Cadillac offered it, even on muscle cars like the GTO. It's sort of a light violet metallic, not exactly lavender.

I suppose it wasn't very popular if it lasted only one year though.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
You'll sometimes see it advertised as "RARE COLOR! Very few made!"

Another case of rarity beginning caused by an initial repulsion of the buyers of the time.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,113
Does this look like that color?

Looks like Pontiac called this one "Iris Mist", while Chevy called it "Evening Orchid". To me, the color looks silver with a hint of purple. I like it. If that '64 Bonneville had looked like that, I wouldn't have minded it, but it was just too danged pink!

That's it! Thanks, I was trying to post a photo I took of a '65 Chevy at Carlisle, but without success. Looks like I mis-remembered the name by combining the Chevy and Pontiac names into "Orchid Mist." I think your photo though makes it look a little more silver than it was in reality.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,113
If you want to email that pic to me, I could post it on my website. I checked the pics I took at the GM show in Carlisle, but somehow I missed that car.

BTW, do you have any plans to go to the GM show again in 2009? I'm going to take my '67 Catalina convertible this time. Presuming it cooperates! If not, I'll have the LeMans again.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
I remember when late '60s Belvederes, Satellites, and Coronets were dirt common and dirt cheap. A high school classmate used to deliver pizzas in a 1968 Belvedere. There was also a car lot not far from me that was full of mid-late '60s Mopars - there were a couple of 1965-66 Newports, a few 1965-68 Furies and a Coronet or two. He also had a 1967 Ford Country Squire wagon, a 1971 Chevrolet Impala Custom two-door hardtop, and a 1968 Ford wrecker.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Those 60s Belvedere (especially) and Satellite 2Doors are still very inexpensive relatively speaking, especially with the 318.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
I'll be at the GM show again with my 1989 Cadillac Brougham - weather permitting of course! If not, I can always bring my DTS, my girlfriend's LaCrosse or my '88 Park Ave if I'm desperate.

Will you be bringing the Catalina to Macungie? I remember waiting to meet up with you before Macungie last summer expecting you to bring the LeMans. I saw this blue New Yorker R-body coming around the curve and thought, "Oh, cool! Andre will like this! Somebody's bringing an R-body!"
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,113
Ah yes...that damn LeMans refused to start on me that day. And worse, I had it parked in front of my '79 5th Ave, which I can always depend on, even if it's not the prettiest thing in the world. So I was forced to bring that evil blue NYer...which died on me 2 miles from home, when I stopped off to get some ice for the cooler! But, it behaved itself for the rest of the trip, although I lost a hubcap en route!

I had an old early 70's Chrysler hubcap lying around that I put on it. Doesn't match, but it's better than nothing. I've been checking eBay every once in awhile for the hubcap I need, but never find it. The Diplomat/LeBaron used a hubcap that was similar, but looks cheaper.

As long as it behaves itself, I'll be bringing the Catalina to Macungie, too. After all the money I'm dumping into that thing, I'm going to get some use out of it! Hell, if GM and Chrysler merge before then, I'll drive it to the Mopar Nationals! :shades:
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
I've sent the photo to your hotmail address. I'm not sure at this point if I'll go again to the GM show, but I'll let you know if I do. It would be nice to drive an old GM car there, but alas, I have none.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,113
cool...thanks for the pic! I got it uploaded, and here it is...
    image

That really is a nice color. I never thought a pinkish/purplish color could look so tasteful, but GM found a way to make it work! I wonder if Ford and Mopar had some equivalent to it?

It's a shame we missed each other at the GM show this past June, but I think it's kinda cool that you at least got to see my disco era relic! It'll be fun to bring the convertible this time, though. I love my '76 LeMans, but the convertible is just soooo much cooler!

Of course, if I bring the convertible, watch it end up raining every blessed day of the 2009 GM show! :surprise:

As nice as that purple/pink is , I like the blue on the Impala next to it much more. Classic.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,113
Yeah, that midnight blue is a really nice color. I think it would make almost ANY car look good! One of my coworkers just got a 2009 Acura TL, a car that's not exactly at the forefront when it comes to good styling taste. Yet in midnight blue, even it looked good!

Here's a pic I took at that show last year, of a '66 Impala in midnight blue. It's a big pic, too big to actually post here. Imidazol97 showed me how to re-size, but I forgot!

but I ran into my mechanic at a Christmas party last night. He had been junkyarding during the day, and said "would you have any interest in a Deuce and a Quarter?" Initially I said no, but I did ask for a few details. It's a 1970, 4-door hardtop, green, still runs, and it would probably go for under $500.

It's at the junkyard, but it's in an area where they keep the cars that they just got in, but haven't dismantled yet. I hate to say it, but I'm kinda tempted to go look at it, at least.

My mechanic also said that they had in some 80's RWD Mopar, but he's not that familiar with their nuances to know what it was. He tried to describe it to me, saying that it wasn't a police car, but it wasn't a 5th Ave either. It was newer and smaller than my '79 NYers, and it was ugly. He said it was nicer than a 5th Ave. I told him that there isn't anything nicer than a 5th Ave. Well, okay, there's lots nicer than a 5th Ave! :P But not in the Mopar M-body lineup!

Best I can figure out, it was a Dodge Diplomat S/E. Basically, a Diplomat with a plush interior, and a front-end that looked like the 5th Ave, with the headlights below the turn signals, and a crosshair grille.

Years ago, my mechanic rescued this 1959 DeSoto Firesweep wagon from the same junkyard. It's no longer his, but he sold it to a local guy a few years back, and it still pops up at local car shows from time to time.
