Go to www.flopro.com I know a guy who has a "Flo-Pro" muffler on a 4.7 liter Durango. One pipe running into the muffler and two pipes running out with chrome echo tips. It sounds great, but not to loud. It has a deep rumble. $275 parts and labor (that may vary according to who does the work) He did not mess with the converters, he just simply replaced the muffler. Anybody know if I can buy headers for the 4.7 liter. Does mopar offer the "Ram-Horn headers" for the 2000 Dakota. How much are they and is it a tough job to do?

Hi. I recently purchased a Dakota Sport CC and am looking into the options for a bedliner. I would appreciate any comments concerning spray-on liners like line-x or the drop in liners like the Mopar offering. I like the proce of the drop ins obviously, but is it worth the extra $150 for the spray ons. Also , any comments concerning over the side or under the side would be appreciated. I plan to use the truck for household 'stuff' like carrying mulch and the like --- nothing heavy duty. Thanks in advance!

definitely go with the spray in. They last better and they don't rub the paint or trap water underneath. My work truck has a line-x and it looks great and we hauled two loads of concrete blocks and you could not even tell afterwards.

I had a Rhino-Liner sprayed in a year and a half ago. All the Rhino shops told me NOT to get the a custom color to match the trunk (emerald green). They said it would fad and discolor. They said go with the black. I found a distributor in Raleigh NC who had no problem with the custom color. I went with the custom color. I haul household stuff mostly, but also masonry, lumber rubble stone, topsoil and mulch. Believe me, it has not faded nor discolored. I am a nut about keeping a clean truck, so no dirt sits in the bed for long. I got an under the rail spray. I personally didn't like the finish detail where the spray would end along the full length of the rail. I bought bed rail caps by BAK Industries http://www.bakliner.com after getting numerous scratches on the top of the rail. Hope this helps.

I had a Rhino in my old truck (black over the rail) I had no problems with it. I am going to put one in my new Dakota also. I found another brand Speedliner that I am going to use just because it is a little cheaper and is stronger. I am also going to put a Roll-Top cover on it. I can go both ways but am not sure which way I want to go. Over the rail will protect your rails and you won't have to worry about scratches.

Thanks for the post about the Speedliner brand liner. I checked out the web site www.loadliner.com and liked what I read. Called today got a local dealer and called him up. I liked the fact that it was a good body shop in Delaware and they knew the product well. For my 2001 QC I was quoted $275 for the KE-2000 spay-on and Rhino was $330. They also said they can mix color to match the bronze of my truck. So I'm planning on having it done as soon as I can.

I have a 2000 dakota 4x4 club cab with a 4.7l engine. Since I have had it, it has idled really rough for the first 10 sec or so after it sits for a couple of hours to the point of stalling out. Then, when I restart it it runs fine. Also, there is a an annoying ticking sound coming from the dash. I was wondering if anybody else has had either of these problems and how they fixed them. Please help, my mechanic and I are desperate!!!!
  • tiltboytiltboy Member Posts: 63
I haven't had any idling problems, however, I do have the ticking/vibration sound in my dash. Some people have posted that condensation from the a/c unit drips and makes a hissing sound. Mine appears to be coming from the air bag. I can hold in the passenger side airbag with my hand and the sound stops. Mine does it with the a/c on and off, so not condensation. I am taking it in to get whatever is loose tightened.

Tiltboy, your aibag is ticking!?! Better run it by the PD and get a bomb sniffing dog to go over it first. ///Pretty Darn Weird Stuff///

Glad to here it. WOW, what a price difference. I live in Maine and it is the speedliner is $425.00 over the rail and the Rhino is $495.00 over the rail. Man it can,t cost that much to ship the product to Maine. But that's what I get for living in a state that can be as backwards as Maine can be sometimes. I,m glad my info helped you out. take care

Yea, thank god it's the passenger side or I would be hesitant to drive it. It is some kind of vibration that I hear over rough road or bumps, that stops when I press in on the air bag. I believe it is some kind of connector, but I will keep everyone posted after detonation/repair!

I was considering getting a club cab but i was wondering if it would be big enough to hold two car seats(2 kids that are still in seats)??? Anybody have ant answers??? thanx!
  • steve234steve234 Member Posts: 460
The club cab might hold two booster seats, but you will find getting the kids in a real pill. Get the Quad and you will never regret it.

I have been following this discussion for sometime now. It was important in our buying decision of a Dakota quad, 4x4, 4.7 auto, Sport,(Black-hard to keep clean) in May of this year. There were several things to look for before we purchased, thanks to the honest and frank people who post here, we made sure all these possible problems were addressed.
I was reluctant in being a cheerleader, till we really tested this truck, in an August trip(four people) from Ontario to Vancouver Island and back. Total mileage was 9600km(5700 miles).
Well, the truck was excellent, fun to drive and made the mountains of British Columbia a piece of cake. Gee, I hated those RV's blowing black smoke as we passed them on upgrade, oh well. The vehicle was scrutunized by many along the way, even a group of bikers heading to Sturgis,S.D. who thought they might trade in their black Harley rumblers for a new black Dakota Quad,(can't put a family of four on a hog!!!)
An oil change was completed at the halfway point, everything was tight, tire wear normal. Comfort in the back was questioned(adult), kids were very happy, but was a far cry better than a Chev extend cab.(i know this, we own one.)
Front passengers never raised a fuss at all.
Gas mileage was reduced on four lane highways, heavy foot syndrome, but that extra power is awesome in the mountians and on the freeway. Handling(handling package) was great on several back roads(major twisting) on Vancouver Island.
On the down side, we have noticed a tendency to stall on cold day startup, not sure what's happening here. Somebody out there probably does.
The next big test will be how this truck handles a
    Northern Ontario winter.
Overall, I like this truck because of the power,
driver appeal, comfort and precise handling.
I feel I can now add to this discussion with some first hand experience.

PS i hope some of the regular posters return after burning up the pavement with their quads this summer and tell everyone about their evaluations. Keep your heads up.

Forgot to mention we had purchased the mopar bed extender. This is mandatory for any trips with lots of camping equipment, luggage etc, this really helped in terms of increased space. Received many positive comments about this hardware. One person said, "isn't that Ford with the extender one ugly truck" I smiled, and agreed.

we just returned from our first big trip in our'00
driftwood/slt quad with 4.7L auto. brownwood texas to charleston sc to drop son tim off at the citadel where he is attending school. 3000 miles round trip and we enjoyed the first half a lot but i must admit the trip home was rather somber, leaving our youngest child halfway across the country and at military school at that...but thats another story. the truck runs great easily accomodating 3 adults a computer and a bed full of various paraphanalia. we covered the bed with a new access cover to keep the contents dry and out of site. the truck now has 11000 miles on it in 6 months and nothing but trouble free driving and a whole lot of fun. i spent about 4 hours in the back seat myself on the trip just to get a handle on how it travels back there and was quite comfortable even easy to stretch out and nap in.
since this is our first truck i really don't have anything to compare it to other than the test drives we took in the ford f150 super crew and i like the dakota SOOOO much better than that. i think that this forum and a lot of reading pointed us in the right direction and have only good things to say about the truck.
for those of you lurking and trying to decide to buy one...take the plunge you won't regret it.
for those of you who keep sharing such great info about these trucks...keep up the good work.
its nice to be a part of such a great group of enthusiasts. sorry for the long post and keep on truckin'

I remember, when our youngest went off to college at American University in Washington, DC. Our older son attended Temple University locally in order to be able to continue his business, so this was our first experience at loading and transporting to school. My wife insisted that I rent a covered U-Haul, so that everything could be neatly packed in an orderly fashion. My son insisted that the stereo be packed last so that he could listen to music up to the last moment and then unload it first. We did all this, and my wife put away all of his belongings in a very neat and organized system. When it came time for him to move out for summer break, I was traveling on business so his brother drove to Washington in one of his landscaping trucks. They bragged that much of his "stuff" was loaded from the window of his room on the second floor by tossing it into the bed of the truck. Most of it hit the target. They picked up the rest, threw it into the bed and drove off looking for some fried chicken joint. Good luck!

When I went to school (West Point) I was wearing one pair of pants, one shirt one pair of underware, one pair of socks, one pair of shoes, a comb, and wallet. That was it, lock, stock and barrel. Everything else was given to me there.

When I left 4 years later, everything I owned could fit in the back seat of a Toyota Corolla.

Best of luck to your son at the Citadel, thewink1.

P.S. I didn't get to talk to my folks on the telephone for the first 6 weeks. :(

knk--just out of curiosity, what class are you? (I'm '79). I compliment you on the practical car you left there with--mine was a 7-year-old Jag XJ6 sedan. It was operational the day I left, but the same could not be said for its normal state either before or after that day.

I have a '99 Dakota and have had trouble with a rather loud spark knock since the car was new. I was told it was the gas I was using, however the engine has been decarbonized and I've been using only the recommended brand of gas, but still having the problem.

Has anyone else had this trouble?
  • spike50spike50 Member Posts: 481
I've read an article that mentioned a head-cooling system induced knock that was remedied by going to a cooler thermostat. It noted that changing gas didn't help. The article was on the Dakota V-6.

I have a 99 Dakota 4x4 extra cab....I have a problem when I'm on the interstate. If I try to hold my speed at say 70 mph,and i start going up a hill the trans.starts going in and out of gear like it can't make up its mind and starts jerking.does anyone else have this problem?
  • bigal31bigal31 Member Posts: 189
I'll take a stab at it. First off your in overdrive. All you have to do is turn it off..The button is at the end of your shifter which is on your steering column. I would just leave it in 4th gear. It is also better for your transmission because of the heat that is generated by shifting in and out of O/D..When you get back onto a more "flat" surface turn O/D back on..Hope this helps.

I just wanted to let veryone know. I had my first oil change on Friday at my local Dodge Dealership. Their has been a recall issued for the 4.7 w Auto Tranny. Recall #890. They will shorten your auto tranny overflow tube. I just thought I would let everyone know about it.
  • sullivtmsullivtm Member Posts: 2
I have a '99 Dakota V6 and I am having exactly the same spark knock issue that you had. Has your issue been resolved (such that you are no longer having to use premium gas)?

I have been getting the run around from my dealer for months. I thought it was because I'm a girl, but apparently they do it to everyone.

Per Spike50's recommendation (Post#178), I asked them to research the cooler thermostat option. They said, "we have nothing from Chrysler on that..."

    Any suggestions?

Ask the dealer about the timing being retarded back 4 degrees it seems like this subject was brought up in the past. Can't remember where.
    This may help...

(sullivtm) I beleive I have read about a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) that spoke of a batch of bad sensors that got installed which can cause spark knock on the V6 (and some V8s too)

From fading, fuzzy memory..... I think it was the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) which needed to be replaced. I am, however, pretty sure it was one of the sensors on the INTAKE side of the engine. (MAP/MAF sensor? [Mass Air Flow/Manifold Absolute Pressure])

    Have you looked through the listof TSBs for your truck? Here is the URL;
