    OK in your area pricing may be different, but around my neck of the woods, an actual out the door price of a fully loaded dodge vs. a chevy the chevy will run 2,500-3,000 more. When I bought my 1500 dodge I got every conceiveable option and I did comparison shopping. Despite the the crappy gas mileage, I'm satisfied and if I could do it again, I wouln't change a thing. (42,000 miles later). I spend my time driving my truck and so the interior was very important. I found the dodge interior much more to my liking than ford or chevy. Hey, I'm sure you prefer your choice better too.

    The Dodge Ram is not a bad truck. Look what ford and Chevy did to there trucks. Ford redesigned their truck and replaced the good 5.0-302 V-8 with a new sohc junk, and if you look under the hood at one of these sohc under the hood of a truck it looks like a van. Chevy replaced their good 5.7-350 V-8 with a a new junk pushrod or ohv engine, and it looks like a car from the seventies with all the vacuum lines running under the hood. Dodge is still using a engine that is easy to fix and has plenty of room under the hood.
    The new Chevy truck has a Cheap frame and so does the Ford truck. Dodge is the only truck that still has a good thick frame. So the new Ford and Chevy trucks are nice just cheap that is all I have to say. I am sorry Ford and Chevy but when you build cheap trucks you get poor quality trucks.

    I am sorry if you do not like what I said. but Dodge did not kill off their old pushrod V-8's.
    Ford & Chevy did You may get more power with these new V-8's but they were not designed and built like a 302-5.0 Ford or a 350-5.7 Chevy.
    Dodge is still using old design engine because they are proven just like the 302-5.0 Ford & 350-5.7 Chevy.

    In what way are pushrod motors superior to OHC motors? It is incorrect to generalize about pushrod or OHC motors. The new OHC engines that Chevy and Ford are now using produce more horsepower and MPG with less displacement and less weight than a comparable pushrod engine. Dodge is developing new OHC engines to replace pushrod also. What is cheap about the frames on the Ford and Chevy? Ford, Chevy and Dodge all offer some good options when it comes to choosing an engine. Cost, style, and quality are more important in differentiation between Dodge, Ford and GM trucks.

    So what you are saying is both GM & Ford have more HP (not sure about torque) and better MPG than Dodge, but Dodge is better because it is an older design. You sound like a Tundra owner - all bad things about your truck are really hidden advantages. I guess you just like foreign trucks better.

    I'll try and type slow so you'll be able to read this. Why is Dodge using the 4.7 SOHC which DESTROYS your precious 318(5.2) and in some applications beats the 360(6.0)??


    Why was Chrysler bailed out by the government with these wonderful pushrod motors? Why was the vehicle that saved your quality company equipped with Japanese motors?

    about dodgeram7 doesn't it. Even in their prime the 318 and 360 wasn't anything to jump and down about...I remember cops using the 360 in their cars. Was a joke at the time cause they couldn't catch anyone cept maybe a stock bug...

    Both the 318 and 360 are old technology engines that are bullet-proof. Dodge will be giving up the ghost in 2002 with a new lineup of gasoline engines. The rumor is that only the 4.7 will remain unchanged. The 5.2 and5.9 may be bullet-proof but are inefficient (both horsepower and fuel economy).

    the Ford mechanic I talked to was just an idiot in vastly preferring the new engines to work on and in commenting on how much more reliable they are. I guess he should talk to dodgeram7 to free him from his self-delusions.... :-0

    The 2002 Dodge trucks will have the hemi design in it, but somebody here said why use ancient technology. The new engines are going to be ohc designs but with hemisperical heads. THe new 5.7l will produce 320hp, and just under 400lbs torque. That my friends is just the begining. Then theres
    the 6.1l, which will have around 340-350hp, and over 400lbs torque. And If that doesn't get you going how about a hemi v10, that will surely be putting out 400 or so horsepower, and probably over 500lbs torque. So dodge in a year from now will be the king of the hill in gas engines, and I think there going be there for a long time, because chevy, nor ford has the hemi design, unless they copy it from dodge. Also just read december issue of truck trend where they compared the three new diesel trucks from chevy ford dodge.
    First things first the new chev does win the competition, but I think only becasue of the hype around the new truck. Why Is say this is because they really gave the ram alot of good remarks , all the way from interior styling to brakes, to the engine. The ram and ford were both 6spd manuals while the gm was automatic. The dodge and gm were 4x4 crew, quadcab for the dodge, while the
    ford was 2wd reg cab. Heres the jist of it. They said the dodge was king of torque, while the ford has it's loyaists, and gm comfort with power. Also they said the dodge was the best at pulling, while the gm was the fastest, (because of and automatic vs manual from the dodge, and ford), and the ford In this comparo just didn't matter.

    Can you say pent-roof? Yes, true "hemi" technology is outdated. Other head designs have come along that are able to produce more power and reduce emissions. "Hemi" is no longer king, (I'm not sure if it ever was, but that's a different argument.)

    The new Hemi engines are not going to be ohc engines. They are going to be pushrod V-8's so Dodge can run them in Nascar.

    You just don't need some stupid wrestler to tell you. You just need some really stupid telling you to buy a Ford. Ford's have become much to complex in design of their trucks. If you look under the hood of Fords new trucks you can't see the engine it should be called Econoline truck their is not alot of room under the hood it is not a real truck. Only Dodge & Toyota know how to design a good clean engine compartment. Chevy & Ford's engine compartments look like a after thought when they finished their design.

    Mommy let you out to play again? You should know that Dodge has a lot of room in the engine compartment by design. It was because they received a lot of complaints from the dealers who had to work on em day in day out to fix the millions of problems on them dudge trucks. The only reason that Toyota has so much room is cause the engine is only 4.7l. Compare that to an 8.1 which displaces almost twice the size. Now you go and figure that one out.....hint..if you can't ask your mommy.

    Dodge may have a few problems now and then but not engine problems. The engine design may be out of date but they are bullet proof.

    Waa, Waa, Waa. Sounds like the biggest bunch of babies hang out here. Some don't want to listen to facts, others are inventing them. I've driven everything except the GM "Vapor" truck, the duramax/allison. It comes down to what you like and can live with. As for more power from smaller engines, yep it can be done, but you shorten their lives. You can get over 2 hp per C.I. out of the Cummins, without changing the inside of the engine, but it will not live very long, and neither will the powertrain (pickups now). The MOPAR police car, around here, most were 318s. Have bought 3 of them over the years with 150k+ on them. Flushed the radiator and replaced the timing set to make them dependable cars. Always talked the city mech, before buying one, was always steered to the MOPARs, yea I know, talk to the dumn mechanic, he doesn't know anything! Yea, he only has to fix them.

    Whats that I hear? Oh-o, sounds like most of your momies are calling you guys, probably time for a diaper change.

    Wished I lived in your area where the cops have the anemic 5.2. Cops in my area had the 5.9 but still couldn't catch a Honda....

    miles straight west of Chicago. When the kids were small we used to take them into the city to see the museums, planetarium, aquarium and such. Lately, I don't seem to have much reason to go there. We go to Rockford for heavy shopping, it's only fifty miles, and roads are better.

    My son has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, and works as a design engineer in the chasis division of Caterpiller Agricultural Tractors in Dekalb and my daughter passed away from a disease similar to Lou Gehrigs disease in 1996 at age nineteen.

    What field of engineering are you studying? and what do you want to work at?

    I am going to school for mechanical engineering.

    I dont know exactly where i want to work as of yet. Still have about 2 yrs to decide i do have a nice internship right now though.

    Rockford is nice my uncle lived there for awhile. We used to go up there all the time. All i remember about shopping up there was cherry valley mall.

    You arent lting about the cold weather in these parts either. Woke up this morning and the truck is covered with snow. I dont even want to go outside i know its friggin cold.

    Was in Montana in Air Force '64-'68 and the
    nice arctic winds brought temp to -40 DEG F..

    I think Dodge and Ford trucks have better
    heaters...

    50 degrees??? Thats warm

    Its (by my trucks temp gauge) 23 degrees. It is 3 degrees above zero with the windchill

    I have no problems with my chevy heater. Works great take no time to warm the cab up

    Up here in Alaska not a winter foes by that we dont see -60F and normally it will be -40F for about 2-3 weeks at a time.
    Dodge has the best heaters and ford is tied with chevy in that department. The biggest problem is that there is to much aluminum on the new engines and it dissipates the heat to fast.
    Another factor on heaters up her is # of cylinders if it has less than 8 of them you will not get much heat.
    There is nothing like having to leave a manual transmission in neutral overnight so you can start your truck in the morning and then having to use 4WD to move,after that you can only drive 15 MPH until the tires get ride of the flat spot.

    comp ratio, 3:23 axel ratio, 2 speed Dynaflow
    tranny. I turned 86 mph in 16 sec, would do 0-60
    in 8.8 secs. Smoked buddie's mom's '62 390 T-BIRD, Buick would burn 9' of rubber....

    farenheit this morning here. The ol' Chebbie started right up, but has been using a bit more gas going back and forth this week with the colder weather. It's getting about 14 1/2 MPG with tempatures running low teens to thirties. I was getting just under 16 1/2 when it was in the fifties. My car only dropped from 24 to 23 with winter grade gasoline.

    My son uses that PRO E program at CAT, He learned it on his co-op job while in school, then took the course on it at school. The industrial instructor was good. Thomas showed the NIU instructor a few tricks he didn't know. That is an impressive CAD program.

    IMHO Pro/ENGINEER is finest CAD system out there.
    Learned it in Dec 1992. Prior to that used
    AutoCAD....hated it, like drawing with crayons...

    does seem lacking off the line....but it's the 2.48 1st gear...which is designed for towing.....not pep...

    Every 5.3 I drove had plenty of go .....for a truck.....

    I'd put any 5.3/6.0 against any 5.9.......only reason they can stick a 360 in a dakota is cuz it's a dog!

    ...but we have had this discussion before....

    I gove credit to Dodge for style and innovation....but in mechanical....I see no credit to give yet...

    ryan - What is shocking is that she drives a minivan right now but has had a taste for some power with my Q45 that I sold a couple years ago.

    Tim, I don't get it my truck is heavier with all kinds of old technology and it would still woop*** all over the above test vehicles. Do these engines need a long warmup or could it be that I happened to get some real dogs here? My wife's actual description of the 5.3 was " a real pooch". I was dissapointed because that Tahoe filled most of the requirements on her list.

    As far as the replacement truck goes, I'm leaning heavily toward an f250 crewcab, v-10. Dodge don't make a crew cab and chevy is lacking in power and and styling (almost as bad as the f150).
