Changed the lube in the rear axle today and I have a question. I thought it was supposed to take 3.25 quarts but I could only get 2 quarts and 8 ounces of Mobil 1 75W90 in before it spilled out of the fill hole. Sticker says I have a 3.73 ratio and locking differntial in a Y2K 2500. Was on a level surface in the garage. I waited seveal minutes and tried to add more, but it just ran out of the hole.
I take it that you don't like anything covering up the paint anywhere on your truck.
So you probably don't like stripe packages either.
What do the rest of you think about aftermarket design. I've seen some very tacky do it yourself job done, but then again, I have seen some very nice professional work, which didn't really involve stripes as much as actual mural painting designs.
if I have any pictures....but I had a guy paint pinstripes and "designs" on my tailgate and pillars of my old 88 Ado...and I got tons of compliments...
The less the better. That way you can see the "paint" and not all the other junk. If the person doesn't know that the truck is a silverado...well it's not important to me either.
Tim- I betcha get more compliments if you had a picture of Alyssa Milano painted on the back...LOL!!!
I agree with you obyone there should be no stickers on a truck. Right now I am waiting to get my new truck in a heated garage for about 3 hours or so so I can remove all the factory stickers on it.By the way do you know of a way to remove the plastic nameplate on the side of the truck? I have tried a lot of things but I cant get them loose.Also I found out if you brow beat the dealer enough they will give you a couple hundred dollar discount for letting them keep their dealer sticker on the tailgate of your new truck.
Years ago when I worked for a Buick, GMC Dealer I did undercoating for them and we used "Acetone" the spelling may not be right but you can get it at good paint stores or the such. Like Sherwin Williams. It is not very high about $5.00 per gallon, put some on a soft rag, and rub. It might take some elbow grease but as soon as you touch it the color of the sticker will come off and then the sticker will peel off, be careful not to get it on things you don't want to come off like moldings. It is great to get dried tar and oil from your truck, but it will take off wax also.

Acetone works great....I have to replace switch membranes all the time on equipment...(a membrane is that smooth touch button crap they got now)...it's like a big sicker and after it's peeled...acetone takes the goo off real good....so I'd imagine it would take stickers off too?... Once it soaks for a minute or two it works very good.
Now I use it on stainless steel....so if it screws up paint.....dat yo problem!
Canceled my F450CC altenate fueled flatbed/dump truck. Put a thousand depo down on a 2001 2500HD GMC CC LB 6.0L 5speed 4x4 vinyl stripper truck. Figure I ought to see it in March or April.
Finally adjusted my parking brake on my '99 Silverado myself. Really easy, with a floor jack, and air gun took about 45 minutes total. Cleaned everything really well, and lubed the pivots. Hope the parking brake stops sticking!
Headed to Denver, to pickup a snowmobile, tomorrow. Anybody know if there is enough snow anywhere in CO to do a couple of break in rides during my trip back to AZ? Figured maybe ski Copper Mountain, and if there is enough snow ride Vail Pass and then maybe down towards Silverton for another break-in ride. New snowmobile has some sort of 6 hour, depowered operation preprogrammed.
removing plastic nameplate is done with 50-100# test. Just run it behind the plastic as if "flossing" and will remove the insignia. Course you will need the acetone or goo gone to remove the residual sticky stuff. Acetone is also used in nail polish remover....if you don't want to run to Menards to pick some up.
I said 29.5 mph, as in the average speed by calculating engine hours and miles driven. My truck only averages 13.5-14mpg (Ext Cab 4x4 5.3) going 75-80 mph, and in the country. My 99 with the 15 less horsepower got 2 mpg better gas milage than the 2000 does now. Oh well.

Cool thanks for the tip on how to get the plate off, by the way I fond that to get stickers off all you have to do is heat up the sticker with a blow dryer and then spray the residual glue with WD-40 wait a minute and wipe off the glue,I like the wd-40 method because it is easier than acetone and you dont have to be as careful also the WD-40 will take out small scuffs from trees and small rocks as well as take off bugs and tar.
Nick my truck was hit by something dont know what. Left a nice dent and scratch $800 damage to the rear passenger side by the fender flare 2wk after i picked it up in indy. They had to remove everything icluding Z71 sticker and repaint

Necessary perhaps, but evil. driving all the specialty places out of business, and their prices aren't even that good (small hardware store down the street beats them all the time on things they both carry, unless Home Depot switches to the Chinese imitation crap). They do have a big selection, though.
No, I haven't taken it to the dealer. Not bad enough to warrant my time. Besides, Tim says there's no fix. I do seem to have a leak of, possibly, power steering fluid. Don't know if it's a leak or spill. If I have to take it in I'll talk to them about the rough idle also.
Some on the pacific audio forum linked the rough idle to a piece of the platinum plug falling off. Didn't read too much into it since I changed my stock plugs out. It may be worth your time to check those plugs out.... my $.02
Ryan, the dome override button did the trick. I couldn't believe that it was pushed in by how far it was sticking out! Now it sticks out farther, but the lights work the way I want them, so thanks.
Changed the oil Saturday at 831 miles. Used dino juice for now, figure on switching to Mobil1 at either the 6000 or 9000 mile changes, as suggested here by most. Filter and magnet on the plug were both pretty clean. Not any big metal bits. Crossing my fingers and hoping I got a tight engine this time! The last one burned a quart every 3000 for 10 years.
Get the Westin step bars this week. It will be kind of sad. I've had so much fun laughing at my wife haul herself up into the truck without them.

My tailgate is broke last night i had a meeting at menards for abtco siding and when i got there noticed something in my tailgate i opened it and the right side came off in my hand very wierd. This morning and i checked it in the light. AT the bottom of the tailgate is that round thing that holds the tailgate on. It is supposed to be a full circle of metal. Well on the right side mine is missing about half of it its all jagged where you can see how it borke off grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr darnit. Gotta take it in now i guess.
the specs i have show 2.1 qt for a 8.5 inch ring gear, 2.7 qt for a 9.5 inch and 3.25 for a 10.5 inch. unfortunately, i'm not enough of a gear head to tell you what you have. i have a 3.73 non-locking rear diff and mine took 2.3 qt. maybe tim or oby or someone like that would be better at answering that question.

Can someone clear something up for me regarding axles? I have the 3.73 axle in my truck and a guy told me that the 3.55 was better for towing. I thought the higher the # the better for towing and lower the # better gas mileage. Thanks in advance.
It's official, my two week old 'rado is now used. I put some deep scars in the driver's side mirror backing into an end-spot in an underground parking ramp. Lucky I didn't snap the thing off. Still getting used to the size of the beast after having driven an Integra for 10 years. Funny thing, the same female friend of mine was with me the first time I put a mark on my Integra.
The tailgate circle on the left side is full, on the right side there is a whole about 1/4 the circle so that the tailgate can be removed by lifting it up when the tailgate is up about 1/2 the way. The tailgate cannot come off if all the way down or all the way up. You may have broken the opening to be a little wider or snapped some of the metal off, who knows. I think that piece is welded onto the tailgate so my may have to insist that momma GM gets you a new tailgate.

jmincher, Higher numerical, (4.10), ratio is better for towing big heavy stuff and the lower numerical gears, (3.42), are better for highway mileage. The guy who told you the opposite obviously doesn't know squat as he drives a Ford (3.55 is a Ford ratio).

I have a Tuffliner drop in. Just your average drop in, not that thick. Pendaliner and Duraliner are much thicker, thus better. The bottom contours match the bed contours unlike most others that area simply ribbed. I don't like the way it traps water and I do like the notches for 2x4 midway up the bed. I traded even for it with a fiberglass lid off my old 91 Ranger. Was the only dealer I found who would trade. Beggars can't be choosers I guess.
Where does the powerbolt unit itself install? If you've got any pictures it would help? Does it install inside the tailgate or the bed wall, or is the unit exposed to the elements inside the bed? If it installs inside the tailgate or bed wall, how do you get it in there? Thanks.
