The "Service 4WD" message flashes right after the red battery light goes out during start up.

ErikheikerI just had this come on, just as you described, only a fraction of a second. Don't know what it means, but I took it in anyway. Will post the result when I get it back.

A local furniture dealer used to have televesion ads that would end with "... and that's a ganga" after hyping a sale price. It's a corrupted version on a Spanish word for something like "good deal". You could call it "Spanglish". It's very unusual for California to get a $79.99 ganga over Tucson - must be very inexpensive to live in California.

How much did it snow RYAN? How do you like the autotrack.

  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
Yes, I keep the transfer case in AutoTrac all the time now. It is designed for this type of operation and our road conditions are such that it is always needed. Only time I will switch back to 2WD during the winter is for long drives on the open road. But this really has nothing to do with my braking issue.
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
Only thing I can think of is that the solenoids may operate when you start the engine and everything is shifting back into place. It only seems to happen when AutoTrac is engaged. I was in 2WD for most of the time during the past month and never saw it. I hope it means nothing, but you'd think they'd have figured out how stop it by now. I'll be waiting for your update. Thanks.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    I made it home

No autotrac. Just used 2wd hi. The locking diff came in handy a few times. The firestone tires did suck though. Lots of wheel spin.

No ditches tim seen the grinch though good movie.

    ..Jessica had other plans..

    .....

Autotrac on all the time?....some may think that 4WD is off...until a slip is detected in auto mode..

the tires still grind when you turn on pavement...unless it was snow all the time or dirt roads all the time....I wouldn't leave it on..

HD's don't have autotrac....so if it never is an option....I guess it's not gonna kill me....although less tire grind is nice

you guys drive me nuts i said it was almost 11. Another reason is i havent been feeling so well and saturday night i have another dance with her and i cant be sick for that i need my rest.

Tim i bet my nerf bars will be rusted by february. We got about 2 inches. My nerf bars are caked in snow and salt. Not good for them.

I have a question why when it snows a lil bit people get stupid and dont know how to drive?

I cant figure out the answer

I figure id ask you since your the man and know your service dept.

I seen all those 2000 tsb's on tims site. Could i just go in and say i want this done. For example the blue fluid for the autotrac? Do i need a reason or just the number. I am just asking cause as of late i have a slight clunk when accelerating from a stop. I figure that falls under this tsb correct?

Anyone have the blue fluid added? Did it help and exactly what did they have to do?

    Thanks

I figure once my tailgate part comes in ill take it in next wk since i have some time

Looks like it is gonna be a snowy day in northern Indiana. Why don't you sent some of that south deeper into Illinois. You ought to get at least two more inches today Ryan. Have fun in it and use the blasted autotrack. It works great. Have fun!!!

Autotrac is for yuppy puppies. Real men know when to shift in and out of 4wd. Maybe it's just nostalgia of owning a 4wd, but I still prefer the stick on the floor.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
...every snow.....especially the first few....people have no clue how to drive...

    Like today!!!!

    GRRRRRRRRRR

    - Tim
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    I tend to agree...kinda...

But autotrac saves your transfer case!....regardless of if you know when to use it or not..

I too said I'll take my shifter in the floor over a disco switch on the dash at one time...(remember the car with 4WD on the dash.....Eagle?)

    But times change

If you were a real man...you'd sell that and get an older one that you have to get out in the mud/snow and lock the hubs!

    LOL

Yea its coming down good. Should be a fun ride to school from work. I love the snow but hate the windchill. The autotrac is on (probably from now till march) it was very icy and the roads werent plowed this morning couldnt even see the lanes.

Rand- cant get bucket seats with the floor shifter. The center console is great. Autotrac works great. Put it in auto 4 wheel and drive. If im a yuppy cause i have autotrac then so be it.

the dealer has to confirm the problem. Else they would have every tom, dick, and harry telling them which tsb to have done. of course, there are exceptions....just bribe the service writer with a $50 and you can pretty much get what you want...of course the more difficult one's like repainting the truck may require a $100...
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
try this test. on the freeway going about 60...turn on your air full blast on the fresh air mode....if your windows have the leak you will surely hear it.
  • bcobco Member Posts: 756
you have to have a complaint before they will perform a tsb. now, how stringent they are about you proving the complaint, i'm not sure. prob'ly varies from place to place. i called mine about the rear quarter window tsb. he asked if i had experienced any wind noise. i said no. he said then why change it? good point. so i opened them both and drove around for a day, then closed them and went on a long drive. still no noise. why fix it if it ain't broke.

    bribe...more like motivation...LOL!!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
haha no way man. I do have a clunking from stop to go and can prove that hopefully it probably wouldnt do it when we took it for a drive though. Is that what the blue goo is for?

I need to bribe him on the tire reprogram price. $72 is a lil pricey.

    Ryan
  • bcobco Member Posts: 756
randersen...you still get out and lock your hubs? damn, must not be a real man. LOL! maybe instead of just a real man, i'm a real lazy man. LOL!!!

up the splines. Hey, my dealer charged me $150 to program the fog lights...well actually my fault as they had to trace the wiring I installed wrong. Other than that, no charge for reprogramming at my dealer.

    it's 4:50 am...72 degrees and 10 mph winds...damn chilly if you ask me...LOL!!

Dean im gonna talk to my uncle he is a chevy salesman and try to get it done free at his place but i dont think he will cut me a break cause i didnt buy the truck from him. Hes still a lil pissed.

If you want to see all hell break loose, come to OKC when we get 1/2 inch of snow - man, it's bumper cars big time - best just to take a couple of hours of annual leave and let the crazies get to work (or the ditch or each other) before ya go in to work, likewise after work if it snows during the day.
I'm like Ryan, love to drive in the snow - but there are too many other unpredictible wierderos out there to have much fun.

    Dean shut up.

Seen a guy this morning hit his brakes and skid into an empty parking lot then do a donut and almost hit a pole and he was all by himself.

Its 8:45 about 20 degrees (below zero with windchill)

Not everyone has the local climate that you have. Dad has an 88 ford with manual hubs and I have a 73 lifted dodge with 33x12.5 tires. I am experienced with it all and autotrack is nice for the roads, not for offroading but ICE, snow, thick water, ect. RYAN, did you go to 285 tires, what happened?

    Hunter
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Not yet. I got a price of $750 (without spare). I am waiting till after xmas probably middle of january to get them. I am going to be working alot of over xmas break and will make plenty of money to get em.

What do you guys think about changing the spare tire? Will a P265 be an ok temporary tire if i got a flat on my LT285's?

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
But being firestones, they may be flat when you really need 'em...lol!!
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    ....uhh...NO

but make sure you put it in 4-LO to make your own decision....

    or at least auto..

    No what?
  • hunter98hunter98 Member Posts: 273
What kind and model are you getting. I think that a 265 spare should work fine for short distances. I wouldn't want to go in 4x4 with dry ground with that difference. I have a 245 spare and 265 michelins. I am not sure is a 285 will even fit below the truck to mount on. 265 may be the max for that. And spare tires do fall off. The one on my 99 fell off at around 10 k miles. Would hate to loose a $200 tire and the rim. Warranty replaced the tire and rim, but Im not sure they would replace a high priced one.

I'm getting the blue goo put in my transfer case, and splines lubed. Truck is in shop now. Probably last trip under warranty, 35,200 miles. Fixing a weeping pinion seal for front diff, squeaky passenger window motor. That's about it. Been really good so far. Ping not a problem, no vibes, no rattles. Oh..service 4WD light came on. Have no idea why. Checking that out too.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
hEY QUAD WHATS WRONG WITH YOUR PINION SEAL? Is it leaking? My moms blazer just had that fixed cause it was leaking. Had less than 10K on it.

    Ryan

Let me know if the blue goo works
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Awhile back in opctober i talked to the firestone guy he ordered me a set of dueler AT's LT265's. I called every monday when the truck came in. My tires to this day still have no come in. National backorder or something. I said FXXX it. They were supposed to be free. Id rather have a better and bigger tire and pay the $800.

Do you have a copy of the Fstone letter?

    If not email me at

    Ryanb0928@aol.com

OR BCO could you post the link?

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
cutting it close on the warranty with only 800 miles to go...lol! Didn't think of trading for a HD? would extend your warranty for another 36K miles...
  • hunter98hunter98 Member Posts: 273
I think you will like that tire. The new TA KO is a really nice tire. I guess you are using the stock rims. I wonder if the tire will rub anywhere?

    Hunter
  • roger350roger350 Member Posts: 157
On the spare tire thing, you might want to think about changing the spare too. With the locker, if one rear tire is a lot smaller, it would make it harder to drive for sure. Now 265 vs. 285 probably won't make enough of a difference, but if it was 245 to 285, I'd change for sure.
  • randersenrandersen Member Posts: 52
Believe me, if the new trucks came with manual hubs, I probably would have gotten them. My GMC full size JImmy had them and I really didn't mind them. Although, I will admit, staying inside the cab where it's warm when shifting into 4wd is nice. Maybe I am just from the old school of four wheel drive and the shifter just belongs there. You can get the stick on the floor with a console and buckets as my 01' 2500HD has them. However if you have the cassette/CD setup with the extended console, that may be the problem and what you are referring to, Ryan.

With the shifter on the floor, you know when it's in 4wd. Rumor has it that some of the push button units have had problems with something like a cable stretching so 4wd doesn't lock in. Maybe see if any service bulletin has come across yet.

Problem I have with autotrac is people who get too confident when they get moving with something like that and then can't stop. Maybe the basic idea of autotrac isn't bad, but my feeling is some people are leaving too much control to the vehicle, than taking control of their actions themselves. I favor ABS as a safely feature, but I am sure some people could make the same argument regarding ABS, too. When I refer to autotrac as a yuppy feature, if you look at the trend for people who are buying into the truck/SUV craze, the yuppies(who seem to like being trendsetters), will most likely have that type of option. Ask a salesman at a dealer and see if they have noticed this trend. Maybe I could have worded it better and don't mean to insult anybody, but seeing how some people drive, you get the picture. Just try to remember some of the close calls you've had due to other drivers and it will start to make sense. We've all seen it.

    Random comments on my truck.

I am still getting acquainted to the Z71 suspension, its stiffer than my old 2WD.

I hate the squeaks and rattles. Any vehicle that cost this much money should not do this.

The truck still pulls to the left, I am scheduling a visit next weeks to check the alignment.

Overall I am pleased with the purchase even though I suffer from buyer's remorse worse than anyone I know.

I opted for the shift in the floor transfer case. Living in Oklahoma I won't need the 4WD for hiway driving except maybe 5 days out of the year. What little off-roading I do I figured the shift would suit me just fine.
  • joelisjoelis Member Posts: 315
is called progress. I've been driving 4wd trucks since '81. Had all types. Best invention was auto locking hubs.

You can call the new pushbuttons yuppy, but it is also a safer option in some situations. You don't always have the extra time to bend over, find the stick and shift in. Sometimes you could be driving on the hwy, start hitting some slick stuff, and be able to quickly push the button without taking your eyes off the road. It happens.

Were in Oklahoma do you live?
