At 60 mph the rpm is about 1500 rpm.
I will double check and get back to you.
(I am not on-line at home so it may be a little while to get back to you. Company shutdown for last week of December)
Most of my driving is on local roads so I am not on the highway often.
Happy Holidays
Lots of useful information there and seems to get more responses there also.
I also felt this truck had a lot of value for the money.
I was also considering the Ford Super Crew but there was no manual tranny available and I liked the styling of the Dakota better. I have owned fords in the past and, well, ummm, I just could not justify getting another one. With all the bad press about Ford lately, I could not, in good conscience, support that company at this time.
Re checked, and at 60 mph the tach is at 1750 rpm. 55 mph 1600 rpm
This is with the T&H package which has P265/70/16 tires.
The truck has 3.55 axle.
In hindsite, I probably should have gotten the 3.92 axle, there does not seem to be much of an rpm penalty. I do not currently tow, but perhaps in the future, might consider getting a small boat. I anticipate that the boat/trailer combo would weigh in at around 3000 lbs. which the current truck configuration can handle.
Oh well, live and learn.

Fact I'd only get the Duramax if I had a serious towing job for it....some like a diesel for dry commuting and figure it will pay for itself in a few years with the saved gas.....but meantime ya gotta listen to the Pig!....all claim their's are quieter now...and they are to a certain degree...but not quiet enough for me..
The new HD's...crew cab and ex.cab both drive better than my 8600 GVW...(they are 9200)....and the 8600 drives better than my old 1/2..(6800?)....hell...my 10,700 Cube van drives better than them all!...more GVW seems to be a better ride for me I guess?...granted the HD's had brand new shocks..bushings..springs..etc...which I'm sure played a role....but still a nicer ride.
CC is very nice as well...providing you can deal with the extra 11.5"....sometimes an Ex.cab can be tight....oh well....life goes on eh?
Get one Mike!!
Good Luck on this one now!..
(oops....there I go again)

now the 8.1 is something I never gave much thought to, but now that you mention it, I'm gonna check it out. I too don't really care for the noise of a diesel, but sure love the way you can feel the torque.
length won't bother me as I already drive a LB version of the ext. cab. you've given me some great input so far so now i can at least focus on some areas i hadn't given much thought to. i'm a buy it then figure it out kinda guy, but as i said, with the help you and a few others have given to me and other members here at edmunds, i've learned a whole new way of looking at buying a new truck.

Glad to be of service...CC is 11.5" longer than an ext. cab......so yes...an ex.cab LB is even longer.......now a CC LB is a tank!
LOL
