1998 F150 Ext Cab 4.6L V8 The first thing you should do when you buy a Ford is get rid of the tires. I had one puncture, one side wall blow out, and one tread separation on three different tires in the first year with the stock AM General tires. The second thing you should do when buying a Ford is make sure you didn't buy an automatic transmission. The p.o.s. has a hard time shifting in cold weather and takes a few minutes to warm up. Also, after 3.5 years and 78,000 miles I had to drop $1,990 on a rebuild not mention the rental car costs. Have fun. I'm going back to Japanese makes and standard transmissions.

I have a 1998 4.6L V8 Extended Cab - Manual Transmission with about 45,000 miles. Everytime I push in the clutch it squeaks. Its very annoying. Is something getting ready to break? Its impossible to oil because the clutch is in the transmission. It may be the slave cylinder. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advise?

Are you sure it isn't just in the clutch pedal assembly? Sometimes the return spring on one will make a squeaking noise.

My 1999 f-150 with 14,000 miles occasionally makes a howling sound from the engine compartment when taking off from a stopped position. It has made this sound from day one. Has anyone else had this problem.

I also have a small crack on the drivers side door, on an 98 F150 Extended cab. I was speaking with my cousin who owns the same model truck and he told me that his dealer told him that there was a factory recall on this problem. I have not checked with my local dealer yet, but was wondering if anyone else has heard of this recall?

Hi. I am looking for an SUV or a truck. If a truck, I think an F150 might be my choice. I have some questions, though:

When did Ford stop using the inline 6 motor? Why?

When did Ford come out with the "new style" F150?

I am looking most likely at used '98-00 years. I also see a nice '97 near me. What is different in '97? I notice it does not say "Triton V8" under the XLT badge. Is it still a Triton motor, just no badge? When did this motor come out? Is it any good? How does it compare to the 302/351 motor I know and remember?

Anything in particular to look at or look for in a used F150? Anything to seek out or avoid? How are the motors and trannys? Any one better than the other?

On the ExtraCab, can the back seat be easily removed? I want to maximize space back there for dog and gear.

    Thanks in advance.

I belong to a volunter fire dept. which uses mobile radio's for communications, when I use my 99 F-150 for response I get a strong RF interferance from my dash somewere for up to 10 minutes after start up, as you can imagine this fouls up my means of communications. Service rep at ford dealer says he never heard of this problem. Any ideas out there?

wanting to know if anyone with a new super crew has any problems with their truck... 2 problems

truck built Jan 8-9, 2001, black 4x4 XLT 4.6, factory sunroof

1 - vehicle while driving, no specific speed, starts to shake as if it has a flat tire. no problems with tires, inflation. dealer rotated, balanced tired, did alignment. problem remains, but cannot be duplicated when needed (of course).

2 - sheet metal on roof is irregular, and has scrap (metal) chips under paint. rust discoloration already appearing around edges of irregularity. do you ever get up there and check out your roof?

warranty visit already scheduled, but want to know of other problems / victims

Not sure what exactly could be your problem, but any metal rubbbing metal will create radio interferance. Could have some loose screws or maybe something underneath rubbing.

You can get something like Meguire's Scratch and Swirl Remover to get most of the swirl out but it'll take a lot of work. They probably didn't use an orbital buffer to polish it up. I doubt if you can get it all out but, with some work on your part, you should be able to get most of it.

Check for oil leaks on the clutch. Had a dodge p u with a leaking rear main seal. Could hardly keep your teeth in when starting out in first gear.Would shudder and shake severly. ok after you got going.
Original high volume dealer replaced everything 3 times to no avail. Decided to stop in a small dealership in a small town. Clem one of only 3 mechanics diagnosed the problem in a matter of seconds. Problem solved.

I had that problem and it drove me crazy. I first WD-40ed the spring on the peddle assembly, no luck. Next I replaced the master cylinder, still squeaked. Lastly I decided to do the all day job of changing the Slave, it did the job. I am now squeak free.

For those of you wondering about the cracks people are finding in the doors of their F-150's, see the following sites:

    http://www.ultranet.com/~peloqun/doorcrack.html

    http://www.f150online.com/articles/cracks.html

    http://www.f150online.com/articles/cracks2.html

    http://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/97up/856.html

My '97 F-150 is rusting at the described location, and I was about to take it to the body shop to have it fixed out of my own pocket. Then I came across this info, which details the exact problem my truck has. I've got the extended warranty, though, so hopefully that will cover the repairs. Wish me luck.

I'm looking for a dodge Ram 1500 club/quad cab or a Dodge Dakota Sport (r/t) preferably from 1998 - 2001 I'm willing to buy a damaged one as long as it is not too bad where is the best place I can check to find a really good deal for like between $7500.00 and $8500.00 for either of the Trucks.

I have a '98 F150 Ext Cab with 67k miles. I had a problem with shaking at certain speeds. Even after rotation of Goodyear tires and re-balance of the tires, still had a problem. Got some Bridgestone Dueler H/L and the problem has stopped. These tires are really great (I do not have stock in Bridgestone), I got a set on my wife's Exploder that had the bad Firestones, the improvement was very noticable.

Other than the tires and my fear of dying in a fender bender, i love my truck.

I have a 99 F-150 super cab. Small Triton v-8. In the past 8 months it has been in shop for a total of nearly 3 months. Paint and steering whine have been the main problems.

3 seperate dealers have tried on 5 seperate occassions to fix the steering whine. They have replaced power steering pump, hoses, pitman arm assembly (twice) and something else I do not completely recall.

Everytime I get the truck back the whine is still there. 1) Why do the ford dealerships not TEST drive the vehicle POST repair work to insure the vehicle is in fact, REPAIRED? 2) The last dealership (on third now as I was disgusted with first two) told me it is a known defect. They said the sound was coming from my steering column and was related to a spring which is attached to the air bag. As the wheel turns the spring coils causing the sound is their claim.

The sound is best heard from inside the vehicle so I do believe it to be a steering column related issue. However, I did not see others on this town hall complaining about the whine which leads me to believe it is not so common as the last dealership seems to believe.

Does anyone else have this sound and or know of a repair for it?

Sound description: whine noise when steering. Happens on all turns but mostly at slower speed. This happens upon minimal steering, no need to crank wheel to hear sound.

    Thank you,
    David

have a 1999 f-150 4x4 that have been great up until 34,000 miles. Had to bring it in to get rotors turned because of severe brake pulse. There fine now except there is a loud humming type sound when stopping at the last 5feet or when lightly holding foot on brake and moving slowly. It sounds like a semi truck stopping. Have 37,000 on it now and dealer says sorry, past warranty. Any thought at what it might be. Are pads and rotors glazed?

Hi I am new to this but here goes.
I have a 00 f150 xlt suppercab 5.4l triton @ 18,000 miles. I lose or burn about 1-1/2 qts per oil change @ 5000 miles. Factory says 1 qt to every 1000 miles accepted. I am using Mobil 1 5w30. Any one else with this problem.
Another problem @8000 miles I had a miss in the engine took it to the dealer found 2 plugs fouled # 2 & # 8. They changed plugs and ran a check all ok. Had my power back for a while. l have the miss now and less power. Took it back and they found no problems. Blamed the miss on an o2 censor updating at idle. Any ideas or fixes??
    Thanks

I had both of the doors on my '97 ext. cab replaced by Ford at 40K. No questions asked. The crack on the L side was larger than the R side. Find yourself a good dealership and they should take care of you.
