When did Ford stop using the inline 6 motor? Why?
When did Ford come out with the "new style" F150?
I am looking most likely at used '98-00 years. I also see a nice '97 near me. What is different in '97? I notice it does not say "Triton V8" under the XLT badge. Is it still a Triton motor, just no badge? When did this motor come out? Is it any good? How does it compare to the 302/351 motor I know and remember?
Anything in particular to look at or look for in a used F150? Anything to seek out or avoid? How are the motors and trannys? Any one better than the other?
On the ExtraCab, can the back seat be easily removed? I want to maximize space back there for dog and gear.
Thanks in advance.

1 - vehicle while driving, no specific speed, starts to shake as if it has a flat tire. no problems with tires, inflation. dealer rotated, balanced tired, did alignment. problem remains, but cannot be duplicated when needed (of course).
2 - sheet metal on roof is irregular, and has scrap (metal) chips under paint. rust discoloration already appearing around edges of irregularity. do you ever get up there and check out your roof?
warranty visit already scheduled, but want to know of other problems / victims
Original high volume dealer replaced everything 3 times to no avail. Decided to stop in a small dealership in a small town. Clem one of only 3 mechanics diagnosed the problem in a matter of seconds. Problem solved.
It came with a factory bed liner. In both front sections nearest the cab the line keeps popping out from under the top rails. anybody have nay suggestions?

My '97 F-150 is rusting at the described location, and I was about to take it to the body shop to have it fixed out of my own pocket. Then I came across this info, which details the exact problem my truck has. I've got the extended warranty, though, so hopefully that will cover the repairs. Wish me luck.
Other than the tires and my fear of dying in a fender bender, i love my truck.
3 seperate dealers have tried on 5 seperate occassions to fix the steering whine. They have replaced power steering pump, hoses, pitman arm assembly (twice) and something else I do not completely recall.
Everytime I get the truck back the whine is still there. 1) Why do the ford dealerships not TEST drive the vehicle POST repair work to insure the vehicle is in fact, REPAIRED? 2) The last dealership (on third now as I was disgusted with first two) told me it is a known defect. They said the sound was coming from my steering column and was related to a spring which is attached to the air bag. As the wheel turns the spring coils causing the sound is their claim.
The sound is best heard from inside the vehicle so I do believe it to be a steering column related issue. However, I did not see others on this town hall complaining about the whine which leads me to believe it is not so common as the last dealership seems to believe.
Does anyone else have this sound and or know of a repair for it?
Sound description: whine noise when steering. Happens on all turns but mostly at slower speed. This happens upon minimal steering, no need to crank wheel to hear sound.
Thank you,
David
I have a 00 f150 xlt suppercab 5.4l triton @ 18,000 miles. I lose or burn about 1-1/2 qts per oil change @ 5000 miles. Factory says 1 qt to every 1000 miles accepted. I am using Mobil 1 5w30. Any one else with this problem.
Another problem @8000 miles I had a miss in the engine took it to the dealer found 2 plugs fouled # 2 & # 8. They changed plugs and ran a check all ok. Had my power back for a while. l have the miss now and less power. Took it back and they found no problems. Blamed the miss on an o2 censor updating at idle. Any ideas or fixes??
Thanks
