I have not heard any official update or TSB from Honda yet on this issue. Many people have good luck with the A-pipe replacement to address this problem. About 2 weeks ago we rented a 06 Toyota Sienna in CA. It too has noticable groaning sound at low RPM.
I've just read your message about the battery failure.
I have a 2005 and have had my van towed because it wouldn't start after sitting in my garage for 3 days.
The dealer replaced the battery. One month later we went on vacation and after one week I had the same problem.
We have a dvd player in the vehicle--no heated seats or navigation system. So what could be draining the battery?
Have you had the problem resolved? My vehicle is going back to the dealer AGAIN. So far I'm not happy with this vehicle. I've had several problems, with my dvd player, battery, sliding door. I'm wishing I purchased the Sienna at this point.
I have had this problem since July, 2005 with my 2005 Odyssey. The dealer has been consistently telling me there is no problem until they heard the sound. They also told me there is no fix. No apparently the new pads have been available since last fall. Does anyone know if I should insist on new discs too, in addition to the new pads? I have 24k on the van- purchased in 11/04. The sound is intermittent but I can't imagine it hasn't done alot of damage. Thanks
People over in the 2006+ Civic forum are also complaining about a 5th gear harmonic vibration.
They are calling the problem the "lug-bug".
I took my service manager for a ride yesterday and he acknowledged the "booming" at 2000 rpm. He said that I have good ears and am the first to complain.
He seemed to be confident that it was a heat shield or loose exhaust pipe. Little does he know that the "Lug-Bug" has struck again.
"I thought it was interesting that the new Civics are experiencing a similar problem."
But what makes you think it's the SAME problem?
From what I understand, some Odyssey owners (of which I am one - hence, my interest) have been hearing some resonance/booming noises at particular rpm's.
Some folks with these noises have reported that replacing the A-pipe (part of the exhaust system) has RESOLVED the issue. That makes it sound as though the resonance noise is exhaust related.
But then you read on a CIVIC forum about some problems with a harmonic balancer on 5th gear in CIVIC transmissions. You then make the leap of logic that this MUST be the source of your problem in....your Odyssey?
That's like the owner of a Mustang with a mysterious rattle reading about loose spare tire mounts in F150 trucks and coming to the conclusion that MUST be what his problem is.
Does anyone know whether and how honda has fixed the transmission issue on 2005+ oddysey? I am getting a new minivan and i still like honda over sienna, but i have a 2002 oddysey that needed a new transmission at 65000K despite being fixed by the recall and never being overworked. Even CR puts a black on 2002 tranny reliability. I presumed they fixed it but never seen anything written and usually this problems appear 2-3 years down the road. I appreciate your input Thank you
Yvonne: The only time we had this problem was in February. Since then we have not left the wehicle without starting probably for not more than five days.So far no problem. We also have rattle sound from passenger side door and took to the dealer for the fix.He could not fix this problem even after consulting with Honda Co. Honda stated that they are looking into this but vaguely stated this noise is normally expected on rough patches. We responded that this explanation is not acceptable.
By the way our Honda Odyssey is fully loaded with DVD player, sunroof etc.We also purchased lifetime rust protection warranty which we later understood the dealer sold. This protection is not provided by Honda but by some other company. This protection requires a circuit which continuously consumes some battery power. The guy who came to jump start our Honda in February told us that this rust protection circuit is the problem. Do you have any circuit for rust protection?
Honda states that with modern high technology there are always some parasitic power losses and therefore advise the owners to keep the battery fully charged. The dealer stated that we disconnect the battery negative terminal everytime we go on an extended vacation. We are likely to go on vacation for three weeks and will see if we get the same battery problem. The dealer though states we should remove the battery negative terminal if we go on three weeks vacation but is not willing to put this in writing. He is only willing to state in writing that negative terminal should be removed for extended period of vehicle storage.
I spotted oil leak on the garage floor for My 2005 Ody. The dealer kept it for 3 days and said he fixed it. He did not what he specifically did. It held fine for 2 weeks. It started leaking again. I gave it to a different dealer. He has it noe since last thursday. First they said they have to replace the oil pan and gaskets. they kep it over the week-end stating that the gaskets need to cure for 24-48hrs before putting on vehicle. Now I got a call that the oil leak is still there. To find out the root cause, they need to take out the transmission??? I just did not understand why transmission, even though the oil is leaking from engine?? The oil is not transmission since it is not in orange color... they confirmed that it is not transmission... did anybody else have the problem? Can anybody direct me to somelight at the end of the tunnel??? Thanks in advance!
There are seals in the "back" of an engine that require removal of the transmission to get to. Not sure if this is your problem, but there you go. I would think if your leak is in this area, you would see oil coming from the point where the transmission meets the engine.
Have '06 Ody EX-L with 23k miles. Had to stop rather suddenly at a stop light a few weeks ago and heard an unusual noise at that stop. After that I began to notice that brakes acted like the rotors were warped and was espeically troublesome at 70-80 MPH with more than gentle brake pedal pressure.
Took it in today and a top notch service advisor recognized the problem as needing the new style brake pads. In and out within a couple of hours and the brakes appear to be back to normal.
A tip of my hat to Honda and my new special service advisor.
Our Touring Model '06 driver's window keeps clicking when it is put down about half way. Took it to get fixed and they heard it too. They tried to fix it by replacing some part inside the door which they said was rubbing the window - but it didn't work. This was 2 weeks ago, and haven't had time to bring it back - HAS anyone else had a problem with CLICKING DRIVERS WINDOW?????
Is anyone having problems with their power steering? My 3 week '06 old EXL/NAV has "clunking" noises in the steering rack when turning full rotations. Parking, pulling out the garage, etc.
Not only do we have the 2000 rpm noise but now the steering rack.
I mentioned in a previous post that my '06 EXL basically had the entire power steering system replace due to a grinding noise at start and occasionaly noise during slower operations in parking lots. Turn out I think the problem could have been fixed with the simple replacement of the pressure line, which had a manufacturing defect. It doesn't sound like your issue exactly, but Honda definitely knows some people are having power steering issues.
I had a service done today, and mentioned the brakes. The writer knew about the problem, but said the new parts weren't out yet? Not really a big deal to me, since I only heard the grind 1 or 2 times and not recently, but odd all the same.
Yes, I took it to the dealer 5 times. Finally, they replaced some plastic weather striping around the windshield. It mostly worked for 6 weeks, now the noise is back, esp. in a cross wind. I now suspect it may be the way the wipers ride on the windshield. The noise went away as I was using them and they were in the "up" position.
if you think it is the wipers, there is a simple test. Just pop the blades off (the whole assembly, not just the rubber), and take it for a ride. If it really is the wipers causing the noise, it should go away.
Just remember to wrap tape around the end of the arms, and don't turn the wipers on!
My Odyssey Touring is two weeks old and has been everything we expected. It did great on an 800 mile weekend trip but when we got home the power driver's side door refused to close.
We switched it to manual mode and shut it and now receive a warning on the dash to "check left passenger door". If I look at the track where the sliding occurs on the working and non working sliding doors, I see there is a thin silver cable with a small cylinderical anchor hanging out on the non working door.
At this point I have switched the doors to manual mode. It will open about two inches and then stop. I do not force it and have left it shut for the time being.
The vehicle is at the dealer now for diagnosis. Has anyone had this problem and figured out the cause and solution?
I had the same oil leak last year. Got a 05 Ody, after just 2 months, found the trans oil leak. Took it to dealer they found out that the gasket from the left shaft to the trans had a hair on it !!! they replaced the gasket and no more oil leaks since then. Hope this would help
I have an '05 Odyssey EX & get 8-10 miles/gallon in the city and 18-20 on the highway. I've taken it to two dealers, and both have said it's fine (after testing the emissions, I think.) This seems outrageous, but maybe it's just my initiation into the world of large 6-cylinder minivans. Does anyone get similar mileage? Also, does anyone know of an objective/scientific way of verifying the mpg's...in order to prove to Honda that it's not just my imagination, but in fact, fact? - Thanks. (One more thing...I was under the impression that Honda was a company that stood behind its' product - however, when I contacted them directly...not the dealers...they basically said it was too bad, but it was my problem.)
That is horrible! I have had my van almost two weeks (it is not even close to being broken-in yet), and averaged 18.6MPG on my first tank of gas in about 80/20(city/highway) driving. I do have the EX-L with VCM, but that should not be much of a factor since my van is not broken-in yet.
I always divide the number of miles driven by the number of gallons of gas used.
For instance if you drove 300 miles and it took 15 gallons to fill your tank you would average 20mpg. I have looked around other Odyssey sites, and people seem to get pretty close to the EPA numbers on the highway and slightly lower on the interstate. Most people seem to average between 22-25MPG in mixed driving after about 3K miles.
How many miles are on your van? Are you keeping your tires inflated to the proper psi? I would try to get a third opinion or try taking it to an independent mechanic.
EPA numbers and real life numbers do not match. Some time (especially for City number), the difference is 50%.
Having say that, your city mileage is a bit low compared to norm. You should expect around 13-17 MPG (vs. 20 for EPA method) for stop and go traffic and less than 5 mile travel. For HWY, you should see somewhere around 22-25 MPG for speed less than 70 MPH.
dc_driver - Thanks so much for responding. I've got about 9000 miles...and actually few complaints about the car otherwise. In terms of calculating mpg's, I've been doing exactly as you detailed...and for several months. I consistently get the figures I cited. Also, my tires are good. I haven't taken it to an independent (non-Honda) mechanic, so maybe I'll try that. But honestly, I'm shocked that Honda wouldn't respond and check the car out thoroughly. Thanks again. (Also, the test I was hoping for/referring to would be one that wouldn't require my word - which of course could be suspected. I was hoping there was a test/place that could actually drive or simulate real driving conditions in order to get real results.
jnt - Thanks for your response. I figured the real mileage would be lower than the EPA numbers. However - not SO MUCH lower. I'm still anywhere from 3 to 9 mpg lower than your estimate. This just isn't right or ok. (On the highway, I'm getting from 17-21 so that's not as bad...but still bad.) Thanks again.
is your engine air filter clean? are your tires inflated properly? is your van shifting up through all it's gears? (do you accidently have the O/D turned off? possibly a bad engine temp sensor, or MAF (mass airflow sensor). has the idle of the vehicle been re-learned? (i think there is a procedure)
what does the van get at 55-65 on the HWY for a good distance trip?
Hi. Has anyone brought their minivan in for recall work? I have a 2005 Odyssey EX for which I received 1) the Front Arming Sensors Recall and 2) a notice about Door cable freezing and insufficient dielectric grease in the wire harness.
I bring the van to the dealer, but then, on the invoice, I see another recall item called FRT and REAR UNITS MISMATCHED - ORDERED NEW UNIT. In the parts list for this item it says 79610-SHJ-A02 CPU ASSY. PART ON SPECIAL ORDER.
We too got our 05 EX-L van in for the following recall items:
1) Campaign 05-036: Greased Underhood Fuse Box and Driver door connector
2) Campaign 05--36-5GS00 : Greased both inner door handle Release Cables
In addition, I also got another one from the dealer that was not on the Recall letter:
3) Campaign 05-037 : Reprogrammed PCM
So Honda dealers try to catch all recalls at once if possible. So depending on the problems per certain vehicles, we got different recalls. So far, the reprogrammed PCM seems to be OK. We did not observe any drivability problem.
Your numbers seem to be very low for any minvan (more like full size SUV numbers) . Try to go easy on the gas pedal from stop to see if it helps any. But it is more likely something is wrong with the vehicle. Our van has 5 speed Automatic Transmission. But it has a small button that could down shift to 3rd gear (I think) if it is pressed. But with that, you should hear more noticable engine noise since engine operates at higher RPM.
The VCM option on EX-L only gives about 10% improvement on HWY mostly (if the road is flat)

I have a 2006 Odyssey EX-L and get about EPA -1to2 mpg city and highway. I have a 1969 Chrysler Imperial with a 440 engine that weighs well over 5000 lbs with a three speed auto that gets better mileage that you Odyssey.
I have a 2005 Odyssey. It drives great, except that when the car is in uphill or downhill position it does not shift smoothly from Park to reverse. It makes a "kling" noise and it's hard to move the shifter. The Honda shop told me it's natural for the car to do this. Has any one experienced this? Please note that this happens only when the car is in downhill or uphill position from park to reverse gear, otherwise it shifts very smoothly when car is in level ground. The van has 20K, but I noticed this problem from day one.
Just for the benefit of others here - the power door motor failed. The dealer has rigged it to work manually till a replacement motor arives later this week.

Thanks for your reply.
Try this method:
1. Stop the car. Keep it in D or R 2. With your right foot depressing the main brakes, press the footbrake all the way down. 3. Put the shifter into N and release the main brakes 4. The car will rock foreward or backward a little depends on uphill or downhill. It's now resting by the rear brakes and not by the gears. 5. Shift to P.
To drive: 1. Depress main brakes and shift to R or D 2. While depressing main brakes, release footbrake 3. Drive away.
Just found out the other day that you can close the windows with the key (salesguy failed to mention this during the walkthrough).
Just curious if anyone has tried this because it seems the front windows do not always close completely on the first attempt. I had to play around with locking and unlocking the door a few times before they would close completely. I don't see any obvious pattern to this madness because the windows seem to stop at different heights each time!
Oh and I was hoping the key would also close the sunroof -- no suck luck. I love that feature on my Jetta!!!
My wife has had nothing but complaints for her 2005 Odyssey EX. Two different dealerships have replaced the brake pads for the same problem that is still occuring. The problem is a loud scrubbing noise (my wife calls it a "hooting" noise) that only occurs when braking and turning to the left. It was very prounounced and loud while I was driving it today. When I let off of the brakes while turning to the left the noise stopped. Any ideas? Thanks
user777 - Thanks for your reply. I get 18-20 mpg on the highway. In terms of your other suggestions, the air filter is clean & the tires are properly inflated. In terms of the other suggestions, I'll check them out. Thanks again.
fred222 - Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, it's no anomaly. I've checked mpg's again & again. Always the same results. Also, I'm very surprised that the Honda Corporation is completely unresponsive, despite my explaining to them what was going on.
It would help if you provided some information about your driving habits. City mileage measured in Mid-town Manhattan will be quite different from city mileage measured in suburbia. Likewise, highway mileage at 80 will vary from that at 60.
My wife is one who zips from a standing start and brakes relatively late to stop. The mileage she gets is significantly different from my more sedate style.

We reported the noise to American Honda when they called for the survey.

Waitaminute. Civic owners are complaining about a 5th gear harmonic vibration, and now YOU think you have the same problem?
Do you think it might be possible that the Civc and the Ody don't use the same transmission?
Also, I thought the 4500 lb Odyssey has a Civic engine and transmission. That is why it gets 28 MPG on the highway. LOL

Press unlock once, then press it again and hold it, release to stop.
I also found that if the rear window is roll down 1/2 way, the doors can fully slide open. I guess it's a safety measure of some sort.
