At least the alarm company can get through, and I think the whole experience scares off MOST intruders.

Some police departments won't even respond to an alarm company call due to the high volume of false alarms. Just the fact that you have an alarm system that can wake up your neighbors 10 miles away if it goes off is a good deterent.

"...where people are not working 60+ a week. Young people won't work those hours any more..."

Heck, now that I'm semi-retired I've cut my hours BACK to about 60 a week. Maybe I should have sold cars instead. I would have enjoyed those SHORT work weeks. (Not to mention that fine dealership coffee) :P

"...many people don't lock their cars or doors..."

I haven't locked the doors on my house since we moved in 26 years ago. My cars were always such junkers that they were theft-proof. :)

In TN all you have to do is make sure they are not running away when you shoot. So the hard part is getting there attention so they will turn back around.

I was in Israel last week and I thought about JMonroe's policy of not buying a car from a country that we went to war with.

I noticed a couple of BMW's, a lot of MB's (mostly taxis), a few VW's, and A LOT of Skoda's (owned by VW).

I guess they don't have the same policy as JMonroe.

OK, so I'm casting about looking for a car for my lovely wife. If we find something she likes it will be a quick cash deal with minimal haggle. So on sunday we were strolling a few lots and she finds one she thinks is "cute". Great, I'll do my research and make an appointment. Not so fast.

The car is listed on Autotrader but NO PRICE. The dealers web site doesn't work (Ok maybe it's my computer's fault) so I can't look it up there. I hate wasting some salesman's "up" with just a price question but I call any way. I go through "voice mail" hell and finally get a salesperson who says he "doesn't do used" and puts me through to an answering machine. ARRRGHHHH!

Why can't dealers have a human being who can answer a simple question like "how much is it?" :confuse:

If anyone would use my policy it should be that country. I’m surprised it isn’t a law there.

I guess not. Being PC doesn’t just apply to the USA. I wonder how many owners of those cars have grandparents than own them. Hell, even my two sons have Japanese cars. It must be a generation thing. :confuse:

My first impression is they're being reluctant to give a price until they see how big the fish is they'll snare on the line.

lol, all cars in Israel are imports since they don't build any of their own. And yes there are a ton of german cars there.

I was in Israel about 2 years ago with my wife, as she has some family there. Pretty interesting country imo.

Import tariffs on cars are so much that it's prohibitive to import anything on your own.

Even used Mazda3 sedans were priced at equivalent of $25k.

I wouldn't be surprised of seeing more of this (customers wanting to trade in impounded cars).

Just recently my customers called me wanting to get out their car bought from me about 6 months ago. They wanted me to buy it back at the selling price and pay off their loan.

Although I do sympathize with them because of job loss, I simply cannot do that.

I am in a finance contract myself on a car I bought last summer, that I'm upside down on. If I wanted to get out of it (not that I want to) I'd have to pony up a few grand.

I try to use my example to show that there are no special buy back tricks or methods even for dealership employees.

We just have to learn to rebudget our finances, and cut spending in order to make ends meet, while still maintaining good credit rating. It's not as hard and it seems either for most situations.

We have been researching home alarms for a while, but the main deterrent is the issue of false alarms.

Sky, we have to pay for false alarms too. But, keep in mind, first the company that monitors the alarm will call. They will only call the police if you ask them to. You can leave instructions for them to call a neighbor or relative before calling the police. I think that with a good alarm system it shouldn't go off needlessly very often. I understand that your daughters are most important, and here it is the same, it isn't the possessions. there isn't too much of real value that they could take, it is the inconvenience of replacing a computer and credit cards etc that they would take.

Thank you for your kind words regarding reading. I probably wouldn't be a reader if I hadn't been in the business for so many years. But, I am glad I read, you can never be bored if you have a good book to fall back on.

    >We just have to learn to rebudget our finances, and cut spending in order to make ends meet

Cut back on those expensive iphone contracts, Starbucks coffees, eating out at expensive restaurants regularly, back off the alcohol or beer, prepackaged food from the grocery instead of 'makins' to actually cook, and cut trips in the car that are unnecessary. It's pretty easy to save, not fun, but easy.

Are you taking over Richard's job? Technically, the sentence "She is not a watchdog and she almost never barks" I suppose could apply to both, but I would rather risk saying I was wrong, than to use that excuse!

I think the police will answer all calls eventually. The thing is, the bad guys don't know how far away they are. So, they are taking their chances if they stick around. I agree though, in a lot of articles it says they can empty your house of a lot of stuff, before the police arrive.

Is it any wonder that such people are unemployed? I would not want anyone who would ask a dealer to do something so stupid working for me. Can you imagine having that person making decisions for YOUR business?

I don't know where this combination of magical thinking and sense of entitlement comes from. It's like a little kid who is truly surprised when he doesn't get a real pony for Christmas. "But I REALLY wanted one!" he cries as if that is all that matters.

I believe that Israel gets German made cars at special prices through a reparations agreement made with West Germany in 1952. I was amazed that when I was in Israel about 10 years ago 2/3rds of the taxi cabs were Mercedes. This is why, with a world economy it is almost impossible to boycott goods. I don't know what kind of TV JMonroe watches, unless he has an RCA built in the 60s. :)

What kind of car do you drive Boomer?.....I hope it is a Chrysler. One good thing about this poor economy is that people might learn to live on their actual incomes, not on their "what they're expecting to get" incomes. David Chilton who wrote the 2 million copy selling Wealthy Barber says everyone can live well, just try to save something on the side, live within your means, buy a home and get it paid off as quickly as possible.

    Here is something I was thinking about. What car would you buy (anyone that cares to answer), if you had a limit of;
    a)$60,000 to spend
    b) a limit of $30,000
    c) a limit of $20,000
    d) a limit of $15000

My answer is a)BMW 3 Series 335 Cabriolet b)BMW i Series hardtop c)VW Jetta with as many options as possible d) Kia Forte

I drive a Jeep Patriot. It's a decent small SUV for what we need right now and the payments are manageable.

My wife's 04 Civic is almost paid off (about 3 payments left), so after the baby is born, she'll be driving the Jeep, and I'll be driving the Civic since it's a 2 door, and it has only 25k miles.

Most of the times I drive what I sell. At Honda I had an older Civic, which I traded in for a new Civic, which I traded in for my doomed used Mercedes. I also sold my parents a Honda, and when I started here at Dodge, I sold my parents a Dodge truck. So now they have both a Honda and a Dodge. Seems liek their vehicle history is dependent on where I work at.

    Let's see:

    $60k: a: a Porsche Cayenne
    $30k b: a used BMW 7 series
$20k c: a used orange colored Dodge Charger R/T Daytona
    $15k d: a used Honda S2000

The Honda S2000 would be a fun car and I'd buy it only assmuning I have another daily driver.

I had a 2000 Jeep Cherokee and though it was a little rough around the edges (noisy and hard riding) I really liked it. The square styling made it a classic. The Patriot reminds me of my Cherokee...I always thought they would bring that look back.

Does the dealership give you a loaner car and will they mind if you come driving in to work in a Honda?

You'd think they import more from Asia, rest of Europe (France, Italy), and the US.

Recently they lowered the import duty for cars (read it on the paper while I was there).

In addition to your good tips on how to save, I have these:

    1. Get lower cell phone and cable packages.
    2. Move the thermostat up/down two degrees.
    3. Run appliances later in the evening to save energy.
    4. Rent movies instead of going to movies.
    5. Do your own lawn maintenance.
    6. Clean your house yourself.
    7. Buy less clothes and shoes.
    8. Learn that peanut butter is a lunch food.
    9. Buy store brands.
    10. Cancel newspapers and magazines.
    11. Use cloth diapers.
    12. Do your own car maintenance.
    13. Cut out coupons.
    14. Cut your own hair.
    15. Give your pets their baths at home.
    16. Cook large dishes that make two or three meals.
    17. If possible, get a second job.
    18. Stop buying CD's and DVD's.
    19. If possible, walk or ride a bicycle to the store.
    20. Go to church suppers or investment brokers' lunches. They're either free or cheap.

None of it is easy, but you will save money.

When I have a choice that gives me the quality/reliability I want, I use it; like with cars. With TV’s, I don’t have that option.

…buy a home and get it paid off as quickly as possible.

Not so fast there. That should depend on the interest rate. The higher it is (with lots of years remaining), the more that would make sense (for most people with average expenses). Mine is 4.5%. I’m in no hurry to pay that off.

The author thinks it is best to pay off your house as soon as possible no matter the interest rate. Then if you lose your job you won't get into trouble as easily. One day you will have more disposable income too.

A few comments though; this would be advice more for young people that are starting out, and who are working to pay down their house, and it makes more sense in Canada where interest on a mortgage is not tax deductible....one vvery good reason we do not have a housing crisis right now. Also, no banks have failed here.

That's some good tips Richard. We are using a few of those with success to save some money.

    Here's a few more too:

-Put away all your spare change like quarters, dimes, nickles. Even put away all one dollar bills. You'll be surprised how quickly you can save up a few hundred bucks.

-If you temporarily can't afford expenses that come with car owenrship, and can do without driving, put storage insurance on your car and park it for a while. You will continue paying it off (and hopefully building up equity) without putting wear and tear on it, but you will save a few hundred dollars a month because stoarge insurance is cheap, and because you're not spending money on gas or maintenance. It's a better alternative than having it repoed and messing up your credit, and ending up without a vehicle, or the possibility of buying one in the near future.

-Take holidays locally. Explore your state/province instead of flying to exotic destinations. It's cheaper and you'll get to know your own back yard better.

-Sell off junk you don't need or use. Have a garage sale or list them on craigslist. Furniture that's gathering dust, electronics that have some value but are not obsolete yet that you don't use anymore, tools, sporting equipment, CDs or records. Very easy to raise some money this way.

-Wash your car by yourself instead of using car washes.
-Cut your home phone if you rarely use it or if your cell phone plans allow you lots of minutes every month.
-Buy pre owned DVDs after they've been out for at least 6 months.
-Make coffee at home instead of buying it on the way to work
    -Pack lunches
-Shop at outlet stores or liquidation type places, you'll save a ton of $$$.

Some police departments won't even respond to an alarm company call due to the high volume of false alarms. Just the fact that you have an alarm system that can wake up your neighbors 10 miles away if it goes off is a good deterrent.

We live @1 mile away from our nearest neighbor. It's a small town and I know-and worked with-most of the local LEOs before I retired. I even took the FBI 9MM qualification course with a few of them. They know to go ahead and send the coroner if I report a B&E after dark...

Here in Florida the gun laws are very pro-gun, someone breaks in to your house, the law assumes they are there to do grave bodily harm, thus allowing the use of deadly force, with the burden of proof on the state to prove otherwise. Someone breaks in to my house, they'll be taking them out in a body bag.
