I live in Michigan, but was visiting relatives in Florida and actually stopped at Village Toyota when I saw the fender flares for the first time. I thought they totally solidified the look of the HL. The mud guards are removed when the flares are added which changes the look a bit too. I test drove the green one in the picture I mentioned. That vehicle also had PIO gray leather and slightly larger OWL 235/70/R16 Michelin LTX M+S tires. I thought the OWL tires looked great with the flares, but I would add them myself for the same cost ($525 MSRP) and have the extra set of original tires. Village Toyota also had these same tires mounted on some aftermarket alloy wheels on other HLs. The salesman I talked to was Scott (McNeight or something). He was fairly informative. I have seen no fender flares here in the midwest. Scott said they were a PIO and possibly only available in the Southeast region. At the time Village Toyota also had an Indigo Blue and a Red HL with the fender flares. Unfortunately, they had no silver with flares which is what I'm looking for. If Scott can locate a silver one, I might get an HL from him.

I think I know the car that Palmerswanson is looking at. If it is then it's been at the dealership for well over a month now. Another dealer told me that their Highlanders have been flying off the showroom floor within 4-7 days of arriving. The one I test drove has now been there at least 2 weeks. One 'generous' saleperson told me that he'd give me $800 off the MSRP because it was a "slow, rainy Thursday night." I know want anything fully loaded. Just want a 6 cylinder 4 wheel drive with privacy glass, center console and ABS brakes!Does this vehicle exist?
    Does this vehicle

Hey PALMERSWANSON,just to let you know,I'm in NE ohio and I can tell you that I worked with a couple dealers and asked them to locate me a gold HL loaded and I was willing to go 3% over invoice + my trade which I had a figure in mind. The dealer I just bought from last eve gave me 200 less than what I wanted on my trade(I can live with that)and just over 3%.I did the deal and I have to tell you the salesman was a true professional.Wanted my business more than the other guys-all you have to do is find the dealer in your area that wants it bad enough.Good Luck....it's a great new vehicle!

Does anyone know if the Hood Protector option ruins the look of the car. I have finally found a dealer who will sell me the Highlander I want at the price I want, but it has this option. Please get back to me as quickly as possible, as I want to let the dealer know ASAP. thanks a million!!

Hey smallz,Did the tires you looked at(Michelins)on the HL have raised white lettering or were they blackwalls.Has anyone out there seen this vehicle with raise white lettering? Curious as to what it looks like.
  • palmerswansonpalmerswanson Member Posts: 9
thanks for the info. I got so frustrated yesterday that I wrote an email outlining which Highlander I wanted, at what price and with which options. I emailed it to many dealers and my phone has been ringing all morning. You are right that some dealers want the business more than others. So, far the best deal I have been able to come across is 7% above invoice (which is also 7% below MSRP). It's amazing though, the offers I have been receiving are all over the map. There's a dealership in my area that advertises heavily that because they pay no mortgages and pay cash for their cars they can offer the best price. Well, not so, so far they have offered the worse price of any dealer I have spoken to.

I thought it looked just fine. You can take it off if you do not like it.I asked the same question the other nite and the salesman told me that it is removable and there would be a couple holes UNDER the hood.See if they'll take it off for you first of all(they want the sale) and if not find a handy mechanic to do it for a few bucks.

I say, keep the hood protector. I didn't get one but after 1000 miles and several paint chips, I had one installed for under $100. It looks fine on my Bluestone.

The Michelins I saw had raised outlined white letters, as opposed to solid raised white letters. These tires are also 10mm (0.39") wider (235/70/R16) than stock which means they are about 0.55" taller than the 225/70/R16 tires that come standard with the vehicle. I thought they looked good on the green HL with fender flares that I test drove. They rode just as nice as the stock tires too without intruding tire noise. The Michelins are also available in the stock size.

Check out the Michelins at http://www.tirerack.com/tires/michelin/mi_ltxms.jsp

Those are very nice pictures of your Highlander. I'm curious about the tires... they don't look like the standard Bridgestones I've seen on most, and I can't quite read the sidewalls from the photos. They look a bit more agressive than the Bridgestones. What are they? Did you trade them out? How do you like them?

first, thanks for posting the pics of the hood protector. i agree, nice pictures. my question: there is a dealer that is four hours away from me that has the car I want for $32,727 (fully loaded: SR, BE, TO, UQ, VD, LL, EJ, LA, HD, CF, HP). Another dealer that is only 40 minutes away says he'll sell me the car for $32,500, but he needs to locate it. Should I go with the sure deal that is four hours away and $227 more (not the biggest deal, it's more the long drive which my husband will have to do with me - and then we'll be in seperate cars for the ride back)? or do I take a chance on this closer dealer and assume he'll be able to find the car I want in the color I want? All advice much appreciated.

Regarding the silver color, I think it is gorgeous, pictures of my limited Silver HL are posted at the Yahoo highlander club (see lrted's pictures).

I believe the last allocation of silvers are currently sold in Hawaii, it's a very popular color here. In fact, the silver/gray RAV4s cannot be kept on the lots, they are all "pre-sold" prior to landing on the island.

How are the fender flares mounted on the HL? Are there existing holes in the wheel wells and on the rear doors for the fasteners to be inserted or do you have to drill into the sheet metal of the fenders and rear doors? Do the available fender flares which require painting come with the fasteners required for installation along with any other necessary exterior trim?

Take it from me...someone who has been waiting 6 weeks and was told it will be another 6-8 weeks....take the dealer that has the vehicle! A dealer that has to "locate" one can't assure you that he'll get one... I've switched dealers just because I got the runaround from my original one. Had he done his homework I might be driving a new bluestone highlander right now...but now I'm waiting another 6 weeks, but at least it's with a dealer that has been nothing but honest with me. Good luck!

Hey Bill....am curious about your dealings, would love to hear from you to swap stories...
  • sbell4sbell4 Member Posts: 446
I do not know exactly how the installation works and will be happy to find out for you. I do know that the accessories needed are included. A side thought to "Host" that took off my post about the fender flares and how to get them. That was just information that may be of interest to people that may want fender flares. I wasn't saying they need to buy them from me, I thought this board was to inform and educate. I will try to repost and be less clear and vague.
  • sbell4sbell4 Member Posts: 446
Contact a region that may have them and can ship them anywhere. Know that they do not arrive to the parts department already painted. I have heard that they cost $233.35 but can't confirm this because that would violate an Edmund's rule(I think)
  • sotagearsotagear Member Posts: 17
I just talked to the parts dept guy at Village Toyota about ordering the fender flares. He said that they wouldn't be available as an aftermarket part for about 6 weeks & that they will be sold only in black. He said to check back at the end of May.
If you are aware of another place I can get them earlier, by all means let me know. You can email me direct if you wish.

That's a nice dance around the "no soliciting" part of our Terms of Use:-).

Lots of people seem to be concerned about painting aftermarket accessories. I have a friend who sells truck canopies. They have a small paint booth and a computerized paint mixer. All they need is the vehicle paint code from the door pillar and they can paint-to-match anything.

Often they repaint stuff to match even if it comes from the factory painted instead of just primed--paint and labor isn't that expensive. When you think about how often stuff gets scratched and dented in shipping, it's likely better to get your add-on painted after it arrives at your dealer/store anyway.

palmerswanson,go take the drive to the dealer who has the car....on the way home you may not stop driving anyway. They'll probably locate you 3 days later on the west coast!

I have added a couple more pictures of the tires. They are from the factory 200 miles on them so far. To new to tell about the performance of the tires (so far so good)

I have been on the phone with car dealers all day. At first I couldn't get anyone to offer anything below $34,000 - today I had four different dealers willing to sell me the car for $32,500. The hardest decision was whether or not to go with the center console. I decided against it, even though I think it would be nice to have for storage, I like the idea of being able to scoot through the seats to attend to children. So, the sequence was $34K from a dealer in Boston, $32,727 from a dealer four hours away in Vermont, $32,827 from same dealer in Boston, $32,500 from a dealer 45 minutes away in Rhode Island (just gave him my credit card to hold the car - picking it up on Saturday). I felt a little bit nervy to have contacted so many dealers, but I was upfront with all of them about what I was up to. Bottom line: the time I spent reading all of your posts saved me $1500. Thanks to all who shared their pricing info (and other info).
  • rutger56rutger56 Member Posts: 12
If the 6 cylinder cost $1500 more than the 4, will you get this back on resale? Also, is there a real difference on the mileage based on anyones experience?
  • sbell4sbell4 Member Posts: 446
Just my opinion, the 6 cyl is worth the extra money. If you go to sell the car in the future, how many people will say they are not interested in your Highlander because it is a 4 cyl. The resale will be higher and the gas mileage is not bad with the 6.
  • dianne4toyotadianne4toyota Member Posts: 343
I advocate the V6 for power and immediate resale, but let's face it... that little 4cyl is what's going to be powering the 2002 Camrys when they make their debut. It's a good engine.
Have learned in my 22 years in this business (more than 1/2 my life now!) to never buy a car for someone else "later"... buy what suits you right now. For your own reasons. There's a "butt" for every seat, used or new, eventually.

My HL didn't come with a Cargo Net, but was wondering if anyone else's had and whether you'd recommend ordering one? I didn't see any on any of the vehicles we test drove, so I don't even know what it looks like (anyone have any pic's of it). I assume it somehow hooks across the back of the cargo area, although I'm not exactly sure where? Is there any installation req'd? Thanks
  • abuyer1abuyer1 Member Posts: 31
Mine has a cargo net. As cargo nets go, this one is not so good. It hooks in place at an angle and tends to pull over the top of low cargo, instead of holding it back, as it should. If you like the idea of a cargo net, then the one available for the HL is somewhat better than none at all. But if you are in doubt about this, you might be better off not getting it. The one on my wife's Subaru Forester is much better.

If you haven't been to the main page lately, there have been some improvements around the rest of Edmunds.com. Be sure to check out the Highlander Colors on the options page too.

I have never owned a vehicle with one. But since my HL purchase, I certainly would not do without it.....especially since I have leather (everything slides around). I like it. It is easy to install and take off....and it is priceless when you do a quick stop at the grocery store.
  • debralewisdebralewis Member Posts: 5
Last weekend we went out looking for a good deal on a HL. Heard the same story over and over it a hot car not many around can't keep them on the lot. The last dealer I went to said I can get you a V6 4X2 in any color. Since I've been reading what a nice color Blue stone is I took the challenge. It took him all of three days to locate it. He is willing to tint the windows since it did not have privacy glass and also install the alarm at $1000 over invoice.

I caught your first message about the unpainted fender flares purchase suggestion before it "disappeared." I would appreciate any information about installation if you can obtain it. Thanks.

I have the gray "Port Leather" and a few of the panels are blemished. My main gripe is the large panel in the rear, passenger's side(where you sit). This panel has a wrinkled/krinkeld appearance. It also feels thinner than the rest of the leather. Anyone else with this issue? Do you all think I should ask them to replace it?

    Thanks for the input.
  • smallzsmallz Member Posts: 24
    -rfhou
I would ask to have the panels you are unhappy with replaced or fixed. If you don't at least ask, it will bother you every time you see them in your HL. Typically in cars of this price range, only the seating surfaces are actually leather. The sides and back sides of the seats are usually covered in vinyl.

Could you tell me what dealer in the St. Louis area you dealt with? I think I'm about ready to make the purchase. Thanks! $1500 over invoice sound very good to me.
  • jblaze13jblaze13 Member Posts: 152
Where did you get your hood protector from?
  • abuyer1abuyer1 Member Posts: 31
I bought my Highlander in St. Louis from Todd Robertson at Jim Lynch Toyota. He is their internet sales manager. You could try contacting him directly. Alternatively if you use AutoByTel, they will refer you to him, and he then will quote his fixed markup price to you immediately. He might do the same, if you contact him directly, but I don't know about that. I can only tell you that doing this through AutoByTel was very easy.

Bought ($65) and installed ($30) at Toyota dealer.
  • sbell4sbell4 Member Posts: 446
The only ones I have seen were installed at port before the arrived here. I did check to see what is involved and since no one here has done it and we do not have any in stock we can't look at the directions. This sounds more difficult then it is, there is the flares, moldings, and I assume a few screws. They look like the flares on the Sequoia,Land Cruiser,4Runner, Tacoma etc. A service dept would probably charge about 1.3 hours for installation

Has anyone dealt with Car Max when purchasing a Highlander? I noticed that in the Baltimore/Washington area, their prices aren't too bad ($28K, although all they have are 2WD models). The other dealers in this area have lost their minds with their pricing. Probably explains why there aren't that many on the road here, but are stacking up on the lots...

I traded in a 1998 camry for my HL
and took out the cargo net from the
camry and put it in my HL. Just hook
it over the plastic bag hooks on each
side and it works great. You can easly
unhook it if you have something big
to put in the cargo area.

Thanks, Drew - those were for performance cars, but I have some leads to follow now. If nothing else, I might just start a club myself and see who's interested - I have a friend with experience setting up a non-profit org and I might could get some money from Toyota, Chevy, Ford, etc... and then pay someone to come give classes.

    Thanks again,
    Michael

I am a little confused on Hood Protector topic thats been discussed...I didn't get one with my HL, but was told by the Toyota Parts dept that he could order me one, and that there were already holes under the hood to install it to? Is that true (guess I could look!), or is there an installation process req'd?
  • smallzsmallz Member Posts: 24

Fender flares are exterior trim pieces that can be attached to the outside of the fenders to make them wider. Typically, the flares follow the curvature of the wheel well and are a couple inches wide. Many SUVs have them including the Toyota 4Runner and Sequoia. Fender flares are not widely available yet for the HL. I expect they will be available on the HL from the factory within a couple of years, instead of just being a Southeastern and Gulf PIO as they are right now.
  • smallzsmallz Member Posts: 24
I would think that there are after market universal cargo nets available today that could be used for the HL if owners are having a difficult time getting the Toyota cargo net for the HL. If I had one in my previous car, I would do like "olsabeck" and keep it instead of including it in the trade of my old vehicle. Fortunately, my father-in-law did not want the cargo net from his Grand Cherokee, so I have it to use if I get a HL.

I live in Baltimore and I haven't priced CarMax. I am dealing with Jones Toyota in Belair. I am getting a Highlander 4x4 with all options and leather for $31K
