I'm pretty sure that the panels have to be removed. See postings #2135 and #2142. However, I can't vouch for the accuracy of the info. Good luck.

    jblaze13:

The whole thing was $450. Don't know how much the remote was separately but I looked around beforehand and think it was probably about $250 plus you will need a new key because its needed in the installation of the kit.

Click on my profile to see my previous postings on how I got my deal. My unlimited V6 was $40650 on the road. You can do much better than that. That price sounds like it is from DVNLT?

I am curious to hear what kind of gas mileage people are getting in their 2wd V6 and 4 cyl HL's. Even though the epa ratings are 3-4 mpg difference, it seems from a couple of posts I've read here that they're not that far apart. I'd be willing to spend the extra ($1600?) for the v6 if there was'nt much of a difference.
BTW; I don't think the epa figs are much different between the 4cyl and V6 camry.

A quick question for HL owners. Do the rear windows (for the rear passengers, not the back window) roll all the way down or only 2/3 of the way as some SUVs do?

    I appreciate any responses.
  • skyrebskyreb Member Posts: 129
    All the way down.

    Happy HL'ing to all.
  • weasel7weasel7 Member Posts: 2
    Edsam,
Did u mean to say in your message "You can't do better then $40650 ??". The price I got was from Hwy 7/Pine Valley Toyota. I'll try the same approach as you. Do you think 39K on the road is too cheap??

    Thanks

    Hi everyone:

I just want to thank everybody for sharing their experiences....I have been able to go into the service dept. well informed....frankly they were quite impressed with my knowledge of the HL. My Toyota dealer has only had three HLs in for service...so any help I provide is a bonus! The recall has been fixed and they were able to fix the popping noise on my HL Ltd. (I provided a printout of some discussions of this forum!!!). The service manager has also stated to me that Toyota Canada is aware of the whistling / crosswind problem, but at this time no service bulletin exists. They are working on it.

As for Weasel7...don't pay a cent over $40700...but I can't see them giving it to you for under $40500 (that would only be dealer cost + 4% markup). Carcost Canada..that is how I got my great deal on my HL V6 Ltd (Cost + 5% + freight and pdi)...by the way in my calculation of $40700 I included $1000 for freight and pdi, $100 air tax, $15 tire tax (a N.S. thing), 15% HST.

Forget the undercoating for now...wait 3 or 4 years...it's a waste of money for a new vehicle.

Goodluck to all...it is a great vehicle. Over 11000 km (6600 miles) and still lovin' it!

$40650 was the lowest price I could get. No dealers responded to my $39K offers. In case you haven't got the invoice cost yet, it is 32655. Subtract 2% holdback and give them 5% markup. Many dealers refuse to acknowledge the existence of holdback. Just go to the next one. According to autonet.ca, there are 34 Toyota dealers in the Greater Toronto Area. Start with Doug at Dave Nicholls Toyota (Keele and Lawrence).

Any experience out there, in buying from Connecticut/Western Massachusetts/Westchester/Rockland Co.New YORK dealers?? Most seem to be dealing on 2001 vehicles. Has any one done well in this area?

Cars.com reports only 3 changes to 2002 HL, center console in front, arm rest in back and cabin air filter. Should not add much to price, unless Toyota wants to raise the price anyway in view of the seller's market for HL's.

Any hard info/rumors as to when the 2002's will be out??

Do you know exactly what your dealer did to fix the popping moonroof or would it be possible for you to find out? My RX300 has been in 4 times for this problem and still is not fixed. Lexus factory rep is scheduled to look at it 9/11.

I'd also be interested to know what your dealer did to fix the moonroof popping noise.

I don't know exactly.....but it took them 2 hours. My understanding is that they had to take the moonroof completely apart and put some heavy duty grease where the plastic touches metal. I don't know if they had any other tricks.

If you are interested my dealership is O'Regan's Toyota/Lexus in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia 902-464-9550. A-1 service.

As for Canadian pricing...I guarantee you will not get anyone to sell you an HL for less than 4% over dealercost....this means 40500$....but think more like 40700$

Does anyone know when the 2002 HL's will be available?

I have a question for HL owners. I have a Sequoia and we are thinking of getting a HL for my wife. We will have two kids in the back and we are wondering if the back climate is comfortable since the HL doesn't have rear A/C?

    Thank you.

A salesperson informed me of the availability of a new "B" package for 2002.

    It includes:
    - Leather seats, steering wheel and shiftknob
    - Power driver seat
    - Tonneau cover
    - Alloy wheels
    - Center console
    - Lock package
    MSRP: $39,300.

Toyota's web site now has information concerning the 2002 Highlander. Interior pictures show a much larger center console now listed as standard. New rear armrest is now available as well. They are still in the process of updating some components, pricing included.

I also saw listed a video entertainment feature under accessories. I wasn't sure if this was available for 2001 or not.

I have been looking at both the RX300 and HL for a while now and am very excited that I decided not to get the RX or 2001 HL. It appears they have fixed the minor annoyances I had with the first year HL.

I may be reaching here, but does Toyota have future plans to Hybrid the Highlander, like the Prius?

    thanks in Advance
    Michael
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Toyota does have plans for a hybrid system for an... unnamed SUV. It is generally assumed that the Highlander will be the platform for this. My understanding is that it is a slightly different system than the Prius but will still have fuel ratings in the upper 30's to low 40's. It is about 3 years away.
  • dominor5dominor5 Member Posts: 58
Just finished reading through my copy. As expected, the Highlander received a Recommended rating. What I didn't expect was it's low score (Fair) on emergency handling, and even with VSC. Overall, the Highs mentioned were for its Ride, Powertrain, Quietness, and Accomodations; Predicted Reliability is Excellent. One more thing worth mentioning is its slightly higher score over the Lexus RX300 and Acura MDX for AWD Wagons and SUVs.

Ok, I know that the brake problem (recalled) has been discussed thoroughly and even though my Highlander was built after April 2001 and the brake recall does not apply to me, I've always thought that my brakes were "soft" (meaning soft pedal).

I've had the service writer at the Toyota dealership even have a mechanic drive my Highlander and he told me that the brakes feel fine to him. He explained that my problem is that I'm not used to driving a SUV (heavier/greater stopping distance) and that is my first vehicle with 4-wheel disk brakes.

This sounds reasonable and off I go. But, I still not completely comfortable with the "soft pedal" brakes.

Well, this morning while washing the Highlander and polishing the wheels I look at the rear rotors and I am amazed to see that the cross-hatching is still on the rear brake rotors and I believe that the braking split is 70% front and 30% rear. Even so, I would think that with 2000 miles on the rotors the cross-hatching would be long gone if the rear brakes were doing their job, but if the rear disks are not engaging then this would explain why I feel that the brakes soft.

So here is the question to other Highlander owners:

Look through the wheel openings at the rear rotors and see if the cross-hatching is still visible. If it is or is not, please post a message stating which and how many miles are on your Highlander.

Thanks for any & all assistance, Philip

Thru this e-club I have learned of the problem with the HL Brake Reservoir Cap as spelled out in Toyota document SSC#10G. I haven't taken delivery of my HL yet but I've told my dealer that I'm aware of this problem and to check my VIN to see if my HL needs to have the cap replaced and brake lines bled as specified in the doc. As a long time believer that car dealers rate about two notches below child molester on the integrity scale I want to know if there is a web site I could go to and check myself to see if my VIN is among those that must have the brake reservoir cap replaced. You advice is appreciated in advance.

    And the link works too.

I talked with the Toyota dealership again yesterday and explained my concern about the "soft" pedal and the cross-hatching on the rear rotors still visible after 2000 miles. The service manager was not able to answer my concerns as to whether this is normal or not because no one had ever asked the question.

But, I have peaked their interest and they have gone on a fact finding mission to look at a few rear rotors on Highlanders and call me today with their results.

I was wondering if the rear seats in the HL fold completely flat?

Apologies if this question is answered previously, I can't seem to search the forum. Thanks!

I still have the marks. My HL has > 4000 ml. Brakes feel "soft" too.
  • xcarnutxcarnut Member Posts: 81
guten: Toyota claims it is a completely flat. The bottom cushion moves forward and down closer to the flat floor with the back cushion on top, giving it (IMO) almost flat cargo area.

There has been several posts regarding this noise emanating from the sunroof during a cooldown after a HL has been sitting in the sun for awhile. I've even seen a few posts of folks that have had the problem fixed by their dealer, and one that even supplied a supposed Lexus service bulletin number B0004-99 involving the addition of some clips and felt tape. I've tried calling my dealer, Toyota Customer Service and even Lexus Customer Service, and don't seem to get anywhere. They all claim they've never heard of any such problems with sunroofs in either the RX300 or the HL, and can't seem to find anything under the bulletin number. So I'm just wondering if maybe you (being on the inside) could dig a little deeper. While the symptom does occur fairly regularly, it is still going to be kind of hard to reproduce in front of my service technician, and I'd rather be able to refer to some kind of already documented problem (and proven solution) when I go in. Cliff, have you heard this noise in any of the HLs you have on the lot? Any help you could throw our way would be greatly appreciated.
  • mikey00mikey00 Member Posts: 462
My 2001 RX has the same noise and I am getting the same treatment as you. They try to make me think I am the only one with this noise. I did print out many posts from this and the RX forum just to show them others were having the same problem. The technician who worked on my RX last said he owned an RX and also had the noise. They did acknowledge the bulletin # you refered to and applied it to my RX. It didn't fix the problem. I also have a case opened with Lexus Customer satisfaction. The dealer has attempted to fix the problem 4 times. On Sept 11 the Lexus factory rep is scheduled to look at it. I will keep you posted on any progress.
Others on this forum and the RX forum have had the problem fixed but none of them seem quite sure exactly what the dealer did.

Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. Ten days ago I bought a Highlander, M. Silver V6 2WD UN-limited. I love this car! This is the first vehicle in 11 years that I've liked better than my Camry (a 1990 5-speed).

The dealer treated me right...it was Friday going into the last weekend of the month and they were willing to deal.

The other dealer in the area wouldn't even talk anything below MSRP. Funny thing was I stopped at this place to see the new Camry and found the right vehicle...just not the right place to deal.

I've added the bug shield, cargo net and hope to get the alarm system and console and talk them into installing them with my 1000 mile, complimentary oil change.

This vehicle will have a ways to go to beat the Camry, I'm retiring it with 220,000 miles and it is still going strong.

Never owning a Toyota before, I was wondering if the valve train belt is a scheduled replacement item for either the 4 cyl. or V6. (60,000 miles or something like that?) Are these considered zero-clearance motors during a belt break or jump event?

Could someone please give me the numbers where this Brake Cap Recall was discussed? I have a
tick tick ticking at the end of braking, that they are fixing today with special grease! Should the brakes have been bled too?????
    Thanks

First, I want to thank everyone who has contributed their opinions to the HL discussion. It was the deciding factor in my purchase of my HL and I'm glad to say that I made the right decision for me. I've got 4400 problem-free miles on it now and truly enjoy driving the vehicle. Now fall/winter is close and I'm looking at installing fog lights. I am curious as to how difficult it would be to do it myself or to have the dealership complete it. I've heard that installing the fog lights isn't difficult but there is a little more involved with the routing of the switch. Once again, I look to the informed HL discussion to help me out.

About the timing belts: I saw a copy of a Click 'n' Clack (the Tappet Brothers) Q&A article (posted at my Toyota svc dept) that said that Toyota engine repairs were not a big deal if the belt broke; no valve damage, unlike Hondas.

    The '01 RAV4 has a timing chain, not a belt. I don't know about other Toyo 4-cylinders.

I took my highlander in today to have the mirrior and dooor seal replaced.
The mirrior, as earlier posted, was causing some wind noise because it was mounted with a slight gap which caused the problem. My service tech also ordereded a new door seal in hopes of solving my problem. I'll keep you updated.

Earthjockey1 -- let me know what the dealer quotes you on the foglights... I am trying to help my girlfriend decide on a used RX versus a new HL un-limited, so we would need to have the lights added by the dealer or do it on our own. Another thing she would have to get would be that little center console... anyone have one of those in their HL?

Anyone else here look at a certified RX before choosing the Highlander???
  • dichelledichelle Member Posts: 25
We looked mostly at possibly getting a new RX for over a year before deciding on a Highlander. What follows is a combination of my observations plus some from others which were important to me in making my decision.

Mechanically, the 2 vehicles are very similar, 6 cyl engines are exactly the same, but the HL is built on a newer platform--thus it is a little longer and has more cargo room behind the rear seats, a lot more in my opinion. Also, the HL has a tighter turning circle--I thought that the RX was very awkward in that regard, and some owners have complained on the RX forum. These two things were very important to me. However, I felt that the RX rode smoother, especially ones from previous years--my understanding is that the suspension was tightened up this past year. HL is tighter still but is supposed to handle better. RX really did ride "just like a car." Some people say that the HL does, but it's somewhat bouncier going over a bump in my opinion.

Some drivers have noted that the HL has better rear visibility--the RX has fatter pillars back there. RX has a nicer center console, in some people's opinion, which integrates with the dash, whereas the HL has that little thing stuck in the middle which seems almost makeshift. I wouldn't want the RX console (I like a place to put my purse down) but I almost wish I hadn't gotten the HL console--it's a place to put things, but CD's don't fit very well.

There are some options you might get on the preowned RX that you wouldn't get on the unlimited HL, including a few things not even available on the HL--I think--like memory mirrors and seats. Both vehicles are prone to some of the minor annoyances that people have discussed on this forum, like the clicking from the sunroof when the car cools down (IF your sunshade is open).

You might check out the latest issue of Consumer Reports--HL is rated higher than RX and Acura MDX. Its poorest rating is on emergency handling, and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with the fact that Toyota supplies less-than-top-quality tires with the HL. Tires on RX might be better, I don't recall. We upgraded ours to ones that are rated as having better traction.

Have fun choosing, both are good!
  • tbuchtatbuchta Member Posts: 43
Well the October CR finally hit the newstand here. Like previous posts I guess I was surprised at the below average handling rating in the emergency maneuver. Like others I suspect this is due more to the tires Toyota chooses to put on the HL than the basic design of the vehicle. Maybe Toyota will get a clue and quit being penny wise and pound foolish on such important accessories as tires.

But getting past that one aspect, as we all suspected the HL will now rated at the very top of the SUV heap, ahead of the RX 300 and Acura MDX. The two vehicles ahead of the HL in CR ratings are the Audi A6/VW Passat 4motion (same vehicle basically), and lets face it, no matter how much we wish it to be so, an SUV type vehicle like the HL is not going to handle as well as these euro sedan/station wagons.

What is remarkable is that the HL as an vehicle with SUV clearance, cargo and towing capacity outaccelerates the passat and subaru outback, beats or is nearly the same in braking an fuel economy.

And finally, why many of us con t inue to choose toyota over other auto makes, the HL is much higher quality vehicle overall as evidenced by its higher reliability ratings. Overall it is a very satisfactory result, if not the complete annihilation of the competition we were hoping for....

Every Toyota that comes into Florida automatically gets "ToyoGuard" added to it, adding about $650 to the price. Does anyone know of a way to get out having this largely useless Dealer mark-up feature added, or at least how to get out of having to pay for it?

I really want to buy the Highlander, but its hard to justify the significantly higher price tag (as opposed to maybe a Rodeo LS).

Any recomendations for best price dealer in Central Florida?
  • little_pogilittle_pogi Member Posts: 149
The 4 cyl engine uses a timing chain so you may not have to worry about replacing them after 60k miles. The 6 cyl uses a timing belt. Anybody with some technical apptitude may be able to install those fog lights on the bumper. Getting to make it light may offer a bit of a chalenge. The 6 cyl may have wiring harnesses ready for fog lights but not on the 4 cyl. Somebody previously posted something about using a remote control switch that overcome those wire routing problems.

Any idea when the 02 Highlander will be available? The answer I get from asking 4 dealers in New Jersey is anywhere from the end of September to early December. This morning I showed a picture from Toyoto's web page of the 02 interior to the dealer that advised 2 weeks ago that no information would be out until late November. He was surprised of how well the center console improved the interior, probably wants to move the (7) 01's on his lot before the new ones arrive? A dealer in N. Jersey lists (44) HL's on their inventory so possibly until the dealers move the 01's, the 02's are on hold?

I have owned Acura's and Honda's for the past 20 years and have been extremely satisfied. The MDX was considered but with pricing at or above MSRP and no availablity, I looked at the HL. I test drove the HL on Rt. 55 in South Jersey driving up to 80. While at 80, the salesperson said hit it, its just as smooth at 90. I backed down, a speeding ticket in NJ will cost!! This SUV was impressive, quiet and drove well at high speed, almost carlike.

This HL had 47 miles on it before my test. Sales people do not care about the vehicle you are testing, only want to sell the car. 80 mph probably did not hurt it but makes you wonder what a 'dealer demo' or any new vehicle with a few miles on it goes through.

This will be my first Toyota, won't even discuss why I will never buy a Ford again ( head gaskets failing, trans. problems)
When the 02 Limited is available and the same deal of around $900.00 over invoice that I was quoted for a 01 is given, I will buy immediately. Will post info. after my purchase.

When I bought my 98 Camry it was on the lot and the dealer would not delete the cost for the ToyoGuard - Bummer!

When I began the buying process for my HL, the dealer, (different dealer than the one that sold me the Camry), said that if they could find one that had not entered the port of Jacksonville FL yet, (I guess this means that it is still on the ship), they could specify not to "install" the ToyoGuard option - and that is how it went.

Actually, I found the HL that I wanted by looking at the Southeast inventory. you can do this by searching dealer websites in the Southeast region - some dealers, in addition to showing what they have on their inventory, let you look at the whole Southeast inventory.

I found a dealer in Alabama whose website let me look at the whole Southeast inventory, and I my timing just happened to be right - there were 731 HLs listed. I went down the list, found about 15 HLs that had all or nearly all the options I wanted, wrote down the last part of the VIN numbers and asked my dealer to get one on the list. They did, it apparently was on the boat, and they got it for me without having to pay for the ToyoGuard.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks, Impe

southeastern toyota is one of two privately owned toyota distributorships in the us(i think the other is gulf states). toyogard is mostly profit for the distributor. if the window invoice has two columns the one on the right is stuff added by the distributor. this stuff is usually way over priced and usually stuff you dont need. you may notice lots of these toyotas are made with cloth interior and have leather added at the port. thats how a 27000 dollar highlander becomes a 32000 dollar highlander

With regards to the question on 2002 availablity...I just ordered my 2002 HL Ltd last week from a dealer WI. They are expecting shipments by late September. Not sure on the rest of the country. I custom ordered the Ltd w/o leather so will have to wait. Anyone have an idea on lead time? Dealer said up to 4 months. Wanted to know if anyone else has similar experiences.

    Cant wait to get it!

One opinion/experience from South Florida --

I factory ordered a V6, non-Limited with a specific set of options (tow prep - for the heavier radiator & alternator, trans cooler & ps cooler, port leather, daytime running lamps, rook rack, mats, port installed step bar and much maligned center console) to get JUST those options and not several other common dealer options like Toyo Guard and power seats (I found ONE with manual seats and it has all of the same controls, just manual. A couple of my personal perceptions from that exercise, which primarily included internet/e-mail dealing:

    1. You can avoid Toyo Guard if you factory order, but be prepared for a 3-1/2 month to 4 month wait.

    2. You can also avoid Toyo Guard by having your dealer pull a vehicle in-route to the port, Jax, FL in this case, as described in a post previously.

    3. If you go with option 2, you'll get the vehicle sooner, but will still end up with a couple options you probably don't need and will probably pay a bit more of a markup over invoice + ad fee.

    4. I personally couldn't see paying for Toyo Guard (the port cost of which is about $75, if I recall) or power seats, and was adamant about the tow prep package (the engine upgrades alone are a bargain, particularly in warmer climates) which is not prevalent without tons of other options.

    5. Bottom-line, we factory ordered. $472 down, exactly $177.46 over invoice + $550 ad fee -- $25,384.96 pre-tax. Thanks, in part, to this Board and ss good a deal as I have seen on the board since I started reading it in May.

Pros/Cons - We are waiting. Semi-patiently. You save money both on options and markup, but it hurts to see more and more driving down the road every day.

A Silver lining! Ours was ordered in early June and we found out last week that it will be built as a 2002 model, no extra charge, but add more wait time.

The dealer quoted the following for 2002 builds -- first factory build date 8/27. First SE Toyota allocation to arrive at JaxPort, FL 9/29. Our is expected to be in the second alloction, two weeks later. I'm crossing my fingers.

For those who have commented on the 2002 console - where in the totota.com web-site did you see it? I cannot load the 360 degree video and see no pictures that give a decent center angle view. I am curious to see the impact it has on my order of a "much-maligned" center console.

I live in Calgary. Several dealers told me that they are not allowed to sell for less than the so called Access price which is set by Toyota Canada. I don't quite believe this. Toyota Access web page says dealer can set their own prices. The Access price is likely more than 10% over the invoice. Has any of the Canadian owners been successfully "gargained down" from the Access price?
    Thanks.
  • edsamedsam Member Posts: 14
What a load of BS. They can give away a car for free and there is nothing Toyota Canada can do about it.

Don't pay anymore than invoice - holdback + 5% markup. I paid 40650 on the road for my unlimited V6 AWD.
