I noticed the same problem with our rear-facing baby carrier. I just installed it on the the driver's side. I realize it's not "as safe" as a middle position, but...what can we do?

catt, I apologize for being vague. What I meant in response to your post #4017, is would you still consider buying a v6 against the 4cyl if your drive is mostly going to be in LA rush hour traffic (SoCal)everyday. Half of the time spent on the drive the v6 engine with its extra 2 cylinders (600CCs extra) is on idle burning gas and the other half going forward just until you reach second gear then stop again and go through the mind numbing, road rage inducing cycle of rush hour traffic twice a day.

I guess from the stickers I've seen on Highlanders around the Twin Cities MN., it looks like V6's go for much more than the 4bangers; probably due to the 'popular packages' they have on them. V6's seem to come more loaded (4x4,etc.) vs. the 4bangers coming with FWD, a basic package including keyless entry, tint windows, mud guards, and a steering wheel...ok, just kidding! Sometimes it seems that Toyota has a price for every normal part. Anyway, that is where I was coming from on the substantial difference of $2K+ between them. In fact, most stickers around here are $25.5K for a 4 vs. (at least) $31K for a V6; again, as they generally are coming onto the lots. If I ordered one, it would probably be closer with the 'TO' package and a couple other goodies and 6 months to boot.
I generally keep my vehicles for 7 years or so and don't want to be kicking my tail after a couple years because I was too frugal and stubborn to pay over the magic $30K level.
Thanks for any insight anyone else has to share.

I purchased a '02 silver/charcoal 2WD, 4 cyl a few days ago and couldn't be happier. This is a great family vehicle with excellent build quality.

My wife and I liked the car-like ride of the Highlander. The Envoy, like most other SUVs, feels like a truck because that's what it is. The Highlander gives us the versatility of an SUV with the comfort of a car.

Living in Arizona I didn't see the need to purchase the AWD. I also found the 4 cyl to be very capable and have not once regretted it. You really need to drive a 4 cyl to believe it. I also like the better gas mileage that it offers. I'll post my actual mileage shortly.

I bought it from Tempe Toyota's fleet department for $100 over invoice which is better than what most people seem to be able to get based on what I've read here (I did have to pay the Toyota marketing fee). I paid $23,895 + tax, title, license, and doc fees (which are a complete rip-off). Options are FE, QO, HE, CF, DR, V5. I think the Highlander is a very good value for under $25K. I really wanted side air bags (which should be standard), but would have had to pay $3K more for a V6 model to get them or wait 3 months for a custom order.

In case you're wondering, no wind noise so far. I did test drive a different '02 that had the high pitched squeal on the highway. Make sure you check for this before buying.

I hope some of you find this info useful. I find these boards very helpful and wanted to give something back.

As a matter of fact, I have pretty much arranged my life around the traffic patterns here(self-employed), so I seldom get embroiled in too much traffic... as a native boy, I've had 46 yrs. to find all the alternate routes to anything in this town at any time... but your point is well taken....
Now, I'm sure there are many happy 4cyl owners out there, and I don't know if it's due to California's extra smog stuff, but I found the 4 trying a little too hard to push the vehicle... ...especially when loaded(and isn't that why you buy an SUV?).... there's also the matter of resale... of course, not really a concern if you're gonna keep it for years...on the plus side, dealers seem to be eager to deal on a 4 over the 6, at least here, with demand higher for the six...
And hey, I've been in 4-banger Civics all my life, maybe I just yearn for more power...

By the way, scooter - pretty good deal!!

I'm on the fence between a Forester and the Toyota Highlander. I either sacrifice $6000, good gas mileage and that coveted heated seat (Wisconsin winters)or I have to live with less room. I'm considering the small things now to flip me to one side and was wondering if the Highlander easily accepts an auto start system. I really want one to let the car warm up in winter and am too impatient to wait in the car.

Several reviewers have made the comment that the stopping power of the Highlander's braking system is not very good. I'm wondering if this is a universally recognized weakness of the Highlander, or do other reviewers disagree on this point? Also, since the Highlander is equipped with Toyota's Brake Assist and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) systems, I don't understand why the performance of the braking system should be anything less than excellent. I am currently considering buying a Highlander, but since I plan to tow a 3,500lb boat with my Highlander, I am very concerned about the vehicles poor stopping power (the boat trailer has it's own hydraulic braking system). I would greatly appreciate any insights on this issue.

The HL has received excellent ratings (near best in class) for braking distance in all the publications I have read including the (october?) consumer report review. They did have a recall on early models (prior to april or may of 2001) to replace the master cylinder cap....
  • dniehusdniehus Member Posts: 83
    Forester vs. Highlander:

I purchased a HL in April. Had been in a Forester for 3 years and gave serious consideration to buying another (or an Outback). There are lots of pro's and con's for both vehicles.

Forester S comes with heated seats so that should not be a consideration. You can finally get leather seats in the Forester S (I was looking at 2001's). Don't know why it took Subaru so long to figure out how to do leather seats with side airbags.

I found the color selection in all Subaru models to be very limited and, frankly, ugly. Color selection is particularly limited if you opt for the S model to get some of the other goodies (such as heated seats). But, that's obviously a matter of taste. Both the Forester and HL get pretty good crash ratings. Toyota wins, of course, for reliability and resale value (and that's why we get "hosed" when we buy the HL). Forester has much better rear and side vision; I'm still concerned about blindspots with the HL even though I've added the blindspot mirrors. I prefer the high ride height of the HL. When all is said and done, the Forester just seems more like a station wagon than an SUV. HL has larger storage capacity. Subaru wins on gas mileage. Subaru wins on initial purchase price; also dealers are much more willing to negotiate.

Good luck in making your decision.

Am in the process of finding a new vehicle for the wife. Noticed the Camry has a Nav system optional and expected the HL to also. Without running the 4k+ posts does anyone have the simple answer? May have to look aftermarket I guess. She seems to really like the HL.

I have noticed that our 2002 HL gets really dirty on the rear windshield and above the bumper, something that did not happen nearly to the same degree as the minivan we traded out of.

Anyone have an opinion as to whether the rear spoiler helps mitigate this problem at all?
  • tfuzztfuzz Member Posts: 93
osoriob--I don't have the TSB number for the wind noise repair, but the part numbers are 67861-48021 and 67862-48021. Presumably one is for the left door, and the other the right.

I asked the service manager for the TSB number, but he was unable to find it--may not even be out yet. He said something about an order number 671351, whatever that is.

Has anyone noticed a random burning rubber smell which seems to come through the ventilation system lasting for only about 30 seconds? The puff of putrid air has occurred about eight times in the last two months. I have noticed it with the AC on and the temperature set at about 72°. I have been driving in city traffic on short trips. My Highlander is a 6 cylinder 4 wheel drive version purchased in March. Please post any thoughts on this subject. It's one of those smells that makes you wonder if your car is going to catch on fire... Thanks!

Glad to hear you got the new door seals and haven't had the problem yet. I also had the new door seals installed a few weeks ago. I have driven in a few windy situations and have not heard the noise since! Hopefully this fixes the problem.

I also have not heard of a TSB number yet. We will driving through the state of KS during the holidays, so I will have ample opportunity to drive under the right conditions to test the new seals.

    Good luck

I plan on towing an i/o boat and trailer which weighs 3100 lbs. i expect to take delivery on a highlander limited next week, with tow prep, etc.
the July 2001 issue of trailer boats magazine did a test of the highlander, ford escape and suzui XL 7. the highlander's brakes were rated excellent. Weigh your boat, motor and trailer to find out if you are over the 3,500 lb limit for the vehicle. don't forget to include fuel and supplies. In Florida, any trailer over 3,000 lbs must have its own brakes which of course helps stop a towed load. i don't expect to have any trouble towing with the highlander.

Test drove a '01 HL and smelled the same smell. It's like burning rubber or something. Smelled it on the front side of the car too. Told the dealer and they said they'll look into it. Whatever. I'm glad my '02 doesn't do that!

Has anyone removed the plastic & installed lights on the bottom of their HL's? Info would be nice.

It was cloudy in central KS last night so I drove out to eastern Colorado to watch the meteor shower (about a 4 hr drive each way). Wasn't windy enough to fully judge the wind noise fix, but trucks going by in the other direction on two lane roads did not make it whistle briefly like they used to, so the fix still looks good!

I and my HL ended up spending the whole night alone together watching the Leonids, which were very, very impressive (my wife and teenager wouldn't go with me). Mostly I stood outside, but when I got cold I got in the HL and opened the moon roof, leaned the seat back, turned on the seat heater and watched the meteors in comfort. Does that make it a "meteor roof"?

This was the first time I have really been able to enjoy my HL on a longer trip. All my other trips I had at some wind noise--sometimes constant. Now I REALLY like my HL!

One of the reasons I insisted that our HL have the rear spoiler was for that very reason stated above by E.H.Levering.

We had a '92 Typhone that didn't have a rear spoiler, and the rear window was always filthy. That vehicle was based on the old S-10, and sinces there was a spoiler for the Chevy, I decided to get the direct bolt on, installed it, and the problem was solved.

Look at the rear glasses of vehicles not equipped with a rear spoiler and notice how many of them are really dirty.

Just picked up my new white limited hl. The car is loaded and has a gold package. I chose the car over rx300 and mdx for a variety of reasons - one being discount. I paid 1000 over invoice, plus toyota quality and resale value. I rolled back windows down with front windows up and I did hear that buffeting sound. This does not bother me because I usually have front windows down and the sound was non-existent.The car has no imperfections and I have a grand total of 30 miles on it so far. Ride and handling are super. I did my homework and reviewed this model for the last few months. Thanks to all who posted their opinions and feelings!

I am evaluating purchasing a HL V6 limited and need some advice regarding the options. Is the limited package a must? What other options should i consider. Is vehicle skid control worthwhile? How is it different from limited slip differential? Any specific dealers in the NYC/Westchester area that you believe are particularly good?

    Thanks in advance, David
  • dniehusdniehus Member Posts: 83
Before you go torturing yourself trying to decide which combination of options you want, you may want to determine what "real life" combinations are generally being ordered/delivered to dealers in your area. Unless you special order a vehicle and are prepared to wait for MONTHS for that privilege, it probably makes more sense to determine what your real choices are. You will likely find out that you have less flexibility than seems to be the case in reading the HL brochure. In actuality, (at least I'm speaking from my experience in the spring when I bought, perhaps things are different now), what was actually being shipped (at least to the MidAtlantic area) was pretty much either fully loaded Limiteds or pretty basic V6's and not much in between. You really couldn't (can't?) readily pick and choose options. I wanted the Limited with all options so didn't really have a problem finding the vehicle I wanted. But, that was after going through a similar decision process which I quickly learned was pretty fuitless once I actually checked the dealer lots and lists of incoming vehicles.

    Good luck.

    dlivings1:

dniehus is correct. Toyota brochures make it sound like you can choose almost any configuration, but when it comes time to shop, you'll find you don't have very much flexibilty. We were being forced towards getting a non-Limited V6 simply because we didn't want to pay the extra $$$ for leather. And although it's an option, it's virtually impossible to find a Limited without leather. Personally, I don't think one even exists! The same is true for many other configurations. You just have to decide what is most important to you. We ultimately bit the bullet and purchased the Limited, and I must say, the vehicle is by far the nicest we've ever owned. My only problem is I can't seem to get it away from my wife long enough for me to drive it!

    Hi everyone,

Thanks to you all for the excellent discussion on the HL. Just got mine last week and absolutely love the vehicle.
Purchased mine off the Internet in Wisconsin( I live in Chicago about 80 miles away) and had a wonderful experience. For reference, I got email addresses of toyota dealers in a 100 mile radius and BCC'd each a list of specs and my best price which I made about $1000 over invoice. I emailed 50 dealers and most said no way. There were three who made very competitive bids and JACK SAFRO TOYOTA IN WISCONSIN had the best price. I ordered over the phone with Todd Hansen with a $1000 dollar deposit for the order, truck came in in under 3 weeks ( he had stated 4 weeks) and I absolutely luv this truck.

Here are the options I got on my truck for reference:

    2002 HL Limited V6
VSC, leather, heated power front seats, tow prep, stereo upgrade to 6 CD with jbl speakers, side airbags and power moonroof, floor mats

    Price $31,200+ taxes. (MSRP 35200)

Anyway, hope it helps to other perspective buyers. Feel free to email me if you all have any questions. sdhillon@bigfoot.com

    Hi everyone:

Negotiated a deal of $1000 over invoice (incl. TDA) at Glen Toyota, NJ last Monday, put down $500 deposit, and the truck arrived last Satuday. It is a gold V6/AWD fully-loaded nonlimited. Sansone Automall on Route 1 NJ also offered the similar deal. You may cut a better deal for a 2-wheel drive HL. Hope this helps potential buyers.
  • highlander2002highlander2002 Member Posts: 5
I'm surprised they agreed to that price. I was there about a month ago looking for a Bluestone V6 4wd Ltd and the salesman said they wouldn't go lower than 34K (~2500 over invoice). Maybe because of ltd vs non-ltd is why you got the good deal of $1000 over invoice or they needed to get more sales since then.

Hackensack Toyota had a better deal of 32,490 (990 over invoice). That was their 1st offer but wouldn't go lower.

I went to Parkway Toyota and put down a deposit 3 weeks ago for $800 over invoice and drove it home yesterday.
  • highlander2002highlander2002 Member Posts: 5
I noticed the smell on a test drive a few weeks ago and also in the one I drove home yesterday. The smell was stronger when I got out of the car. I figure it's from the new brakes and should wear off. In the meantime, when using the climate control, maybe by recirculating the cabin air instead of "fresh" air you can avoid it. I haven't tried it yet as I am still learning about all the buttons.

For those of you in the Central Atlantic Region, I want to let you know of an inventory issue. It seems the Limited 4x4 is just about impossible to find right now. There has been a recent run on this model and most dealerships have pre-sold everything they have coming in. This will mean a longer wait and probably higher prices for this configuration.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
The smell you noticed is cosmoline. This is a packing grease that is put on the exhaust for shipping. It burns off in 40 to 200 miles depending on how this it is on there. For the older crowd here, yes, that is the same stuff they packed your old M1 rifles in.

Hi, Neighbor, I live in Racine Wi. Between Milwaukee Kenosha (north of Zion) and Jack Safro is one of the dealers that I'm planning to check out. I bought my two Rav-4 at Don Jacobs in South Milwaukee and they are a great company to buy from! Safro is one of the best dealers in Wisconsin to buy from and after what you said I will make sure to check them out!!! You didn't have any problem ordering a car that way? I'm looking at using the Internet also, which Internet service did you use? Edmunds?

I live in central NJ (Jackson) and am looking to purchase a limited V6 4x4 in the next 30 days. Do you have any more information on the dealers you went to and which was the best? I am not familiar with the names or locations of the dealers you listed but it sounds like $800 - 1000 over invoice is a good deal at this time.

    Highlander2002:

I went to Parkway Toyota last August and they only agreed to discount $500-700 from the sticker for 2002 HL. How much has changed since then! People should avoid Prestige Toyota who still sells HL close to sticker.
  • fanzfanz Member Posts: 4
Sorry. Parkway only discounted $500-t00 for 2001 HL last August.

Came home today and went to pull my car into the garage when I heard a low speed whining/creaking noise. It was in drive and there was no pedal applied (The vehicle was moving under idle power). I guess I can relate the noise to a creaking door with the pitch changing as it accelerated (probably no more than 2 or 3 mph). The noise also occurs in reverse under it's own idle acceleration. Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences on this? Thanks in advance.

  • sdhillonsdhillon Member Posts: 5
    Hi everyone

This is the plan I used to purchase my new Highlander from Jack Safro Toyota in the Milwaukee area.

    1. Test drove the truck at my neighborhood Toyota dealer.
    2. Went to toyota.com and got email addresses of every toyota dealer within a 100 mile radius of my house in Chicago.
    3. Made an email with the exact options and color I wanted. Decided the most I was willing to pay for the truck (Which was about $1000 over dealer cost). Also noted I was very motivated and would buy from the best price and am willing to wait if the truck needs to be ordered.( this is key because these models are in short supply and because inventory is low most dealers are not willing to deal aggressively). Blind carbon copied to 49 dealers.

Started getting replies the next day. Over a 3 day period, most of the replies were that the price was too low and they would not be able to do better. There were 4 dealers who came in below my quoted price. Now I just went with the lowest bidder. WHich was this guy, Todd Hansen at Jack Safro. Called on the phone, gave him a $1000 deposit and he ordered the truck. He had mentioned it would be about 4 weeks but the truck came in earlier. Drove down to Milwaukee and picked up the HL which was flawlessly prepped and ready to go. Wonderful overall no haggle experience.
Now, I could have gone back and forth between the 4 low bidders and tried to lower the price even more. I just didn't want the hassle for another 100 bucks.
By the way, used people first Internet financing and the dealership took the check wihtout any problems.

    Hope this helps,

    sdhillon

Wow, that's great to hear I just went to Jack Safro in Milwaukee ( I live 20 miles south in Racine)I'm looking at the 4Runner and the Highlander. Don Jacobs and Heiser Toyota in Milwaukee all had great cars but I just wanted to test drive one so I will most likely go back to Don Jacobs to do that. I will most likely buy one after the Milwaukee Auto Show in February.

I can't speak for other regions, but here in the Central Atlantic Region, the limited 4x4 is the only one in really short supply. Other models are not clogging our lots but at least we have them.

I have been trying to purchase a HL Limited
for the past 3 months. After 4 local dealers would not come close to accepting my $600.00 over invoice offer, I decided to wait until January when the Toyota tow hitch receiver will be available and then pay possibly more for a AWD vehicle in the winter??. ............... I waited too long, my Honda died this past week so I had to find something sooner than I had planned. Local dealers are asking more for HL's now than 2 weeks ago, the demand must be increasing.
So I test drove a 4 Runner Sport Edition in metalic Red, M.S.R.P. $33,900.00.
The 4 Runners have a 3 year 0% interest plan until December. So I bought the Runner at 500.00 over invoice on Wednesday and have no regrets, one of the most outstanding vehicles I have ever owned.
The problem now is my wife still wants a Highlander. So probably in the Spring she will trade in her low mileage Acura Legend for a Highlander.

It been great following the threads on this post
the past few months, have learned much from the owners. This is my first Toyota, I really believe that they make the best cars in the world.
Either choice I made either a Highlander or a 4Runner was a win/win. And 0% for a Toyota may never happen again. Will log back on this post this Spring and hope Toyota has enough HL's on their lots to satisfy demand. And $600.00 over should not be a problem by then.

I ordered a "bare bones" V6 AWD HL on July 9. My 2002 model arrived today, on time, exactly as I wanted. The wait time was 4 1/2 months but it seemed to go quite quickly. The only options I got were MG, TO, DR, CF. My salesperson kept me informed and answered all my questions during the wait. I did everything by e-mail and one phone call. I feel like I got what I wanted and the price was good too.....$500 over invoice plus $250 TDA. Dealer was very reputable and easy to deal with. If you are looking the upper midwest give them a try:
Ross Meyer at Maplewood Toyota in St. Paul.
The vehicle is amazing....I just love it. But then my point of reference is my '91 (low ground clerance) 1X4 Previa :)

    Hi, llofgren -
Congratulations and welcome to owning another Toyota - the best of the bunch, IMO. What color? I'm also located in MN - 100 miles down the Mississippi from St. Paul - and got my non Ltd '02 bluestone in early October - V6 4WD, etc. Mine is due for the 3500 mile oil change, etc. in a few days. I can't believe how quickly those miles went by - lots of very comfortable highway miles (Fargo, North Dakota and back) and some great city journeys too. (Don't you just love it when you close any door and there's that solid "thunk" sound?) Of course, the first significant test for the Highlander will come during the initial "real" Minnesota snow storm predicted next week. I'm actually looking forward to it instead of dreading driving on snowy roads, icy driveways, slippery hills, etc. Might even dust off those cross-country skis that are now gathering dust in the garage... So, as so many have said: "Happy HLing"!

My 01 HL had a similar noise coming from the rear axle. It made the noise inconsistently. It would do it for a few days and then be quite for a few days. It had about 4000 or 5000 miles at the time.

The noise in mine was directly related to travel speed and occurred in F or R. It was like a whining noise and then became a creaking noise as I came to a stop. I isolated it to the left rear wheel or axle. I could not find anything rubbing or any obvious cause. It was not related to the brakes since application of the service brakes or parking brakes did not affect it.

I took it to the dealer and the first time it did not make the noise when I was there. I went back later and the mechanic heard it. He looked it over and did not see any obious cause either. They ordered a complete set of new rear axle seals, bearings and CV joint. Their plan was to replace things one at a time until it went away but I think they replaced everything. It's been quite since.

It's interesting to hear someone else may have something similar.

Hey Alimin, thanks for the welcome! Mine is silver. I liked the bluestone too and the green. Yes, that solid clunk when I close the door is very impressive:) I am about 80 miles north of St. Paul but I travel alot also. I was driving yesterday in all that wind and rain and the HL seemed extremely secure and comfortable. I can't wait for this winter weather coming tonight and tommorrow.....they are predicting 6 to 8 inces up here!!! Bring it on:)
