I have had several Toyotas (1978 - 1991) that pulled to one side or the other as they aged. They were all able to be adjusted by setting the wheels straight and then pulling off the steering wheel and moving it one or two notches in the opposite direction. It had something to do with the self centering device on the steering. I don't know if the new steering systems are built similarly, but it sure is worth trying.

I have test driven about 3 different 4 bangers because I have been wresting with the idea of a 4 over a 6cyl. The 4 seems very adequate for the vehicle. It's smooth and has good pep. It's not a racer though, so if you're use to a 6 now, beware that acceleration is not like a 6, but it does cruise nice. If you tow, you should get the 'TO' package to increase towing up to 3000lbs....or so they say. 4wd's in a 4 are virtually non-existent....at least that's what they say here in MN.. All 4X4's seen here are v6's. Another factor is the money difference. The way they're packaged, a 6 costs about $5K more than a 4cyl..; again, because of the way they're coming in. 4's are going for $26-28K while 6's are $30-35K with packages (sticker).
    Good luck!

Last October, we put down a deposit (with the understanding that the check would be held until delivery) on an H/L 2WD 6 with three packages (AG, CQ, TO), and some individual options, the most important of which was side airbags. Among the indiv. options also desired were heated mirrors and DRL. Our salesman said that there was only a slim chance that essentially what we wanted may be part of the November shipment, but that a December "intercept" was quite possible.

As Dec. wore on, we learned that H/Ls w/o the Limited package were not being equipped with side bags (this was when an H/L equipped ALMOST as requested-- no side bags, and had expensive power seat pkg.) came in. We then told him that we would accept the expense of the Lim. pkg. in order to get the bags (and such as heated mirrors and DRL).
Next news: all Limiteds had moon roofs and leather, further escalating the price (and the ivory color does not go well with Bluestone).

Chosing 2WD was a cost-controlling decision. So, I decided that if I couldn't get much of what we wanted except on a heavily-loaded unit, I would at least switch to a 4WD, which I communicated to our salesman.

Now, January is nearly 1/3 gone, and we do not have what we want. Getting what the brochure implies (choice) is the victim of N. Calif. dealers' ordering decisions. We would like to buy from our local dealer, with whom we've done business since 1988, thus we've not shopped out-of-area.

So: maybe an acceptably-equipped car will be in another shipment; or we'll inquire in other areas; or we'll wait for the '03 models (maybe all will have side bags). For certain, though, we are not going to be "forced" into taking options (leather and moon roof) we neither want nor are willing to pay for.

If I were you I wouldn't let the dealer use my deposit money then. Go on the internet and find a service over which to buy the exact car you want.

These services have national dealership contacts/connections and that is you best chance of getting the car YOU want, through a "hungry" dealer or one who the manufacturer "favors", huge, HUGE sales volume, or like Honda, money under the table for GOOD product allocations.

There was a specific MY2000 car that I wanted so I made a deposit on it at a local dealer in July of 98. In the fall of 2000 I gave up, dealer wasn't high enough on the product allocation "list", and salesman nor manager just simply didn't know how to configure the product. I used Greenlight who not only managed to get me a car, it was through a dealer saleman that knew absolutely of what he was doing.

We've had the same problem with our HL. I realized not long after we took delivery that the steering wheel needed to be turned slightly to the left in order to drive straight. If I center the steering wheel, or simply let go while driving, the HL pulls to the right. And just as novice11 said, the faster we drive the harder it pulls. At first I thought it was the grade of the road. But here in FL things are flat and it occurs on all types of surfaces. We've had it back to the dealer for an alignment, but I don't feel like anything was corrected. For now, I've just learned to live with it. Please post any solutions you know of that might correct this. Other than that, we love our HL!

I keep seeing this kind of post and I admit that I don't understand why your dealers aren't being frank with you. I can't imagine any dealer, service manager, worth their salt not giving you a head's up that on a new vehicle the tires are the most common cause of this problem.

Is it because tires are not warranted by the dealer or the manufacturer? Nothing in it for them to tell you the truth?
  • wwestwwest Member Posts: 10,706
Was that any help? Or did I overload you?

My 'Lander is my first Toyota after fifteen years of owning Hondas. Anyone that has bought a new Honda is aware that, for example, an Accord EX gets you just about everything except for some dealer added cosmetic accessories.

My question is, has Toyota always been so confusing with their option packages?

Maybe confusing isn't the word, but is just seems difficult to for some of you people to get exactly what you want as far as options. On the other hand, maybe there is an advantage. Let's say you want an Accord V6 with leather, but don't want a sunroof, forget it! So I probably won't be so frustrated when I purchase my next Toyota and consider myself fortunate that I can get exactly the options I want. One negative is finding the car with the options and the color that you desire. It still seems that ordering a 'Lander takes way too long compared to other makes.

As far as my experience after 8.5K miles, well lets just say that I always figured that Toyota was comparable to Honda, but now I feel that Toyota is a step above in quality and style, especially compared to Honda over the last few years. My '99 Accord V6 and '00 S2000 were the worst Hondas (out of 12) that I have owned. This is why I don't feel so excited about the new Honda Pilot.

I solved the problem on mine after asking the service tech switch the front right with front left. Since, the HL was new and tires/HL hadn't been driven more than 1k miles it was the easiest and quickest way for me to get the problem solved. Not the recommended way, but it did the trick and now with almost 10k miles with tires rotated once about 2k miles back the pull has not returned and tracks straight as an arrow on roads without the crown, (freeway in my area do not have a noticeable crown), with no adverse effect on the wearing of the tires. All 4 tires seem to be wearing evenly. Though, I do run about 32PSI Front, 31PSI rear or is it 31 front and 32 rear..hmmm..... No matter it is wearing evenly and most of all solved the dreaded pain in the arm of trying to keep HL going straight.

wwest - Regarding your comments about dealers not being frank, you do have point my dealer was reluctant claiming it is normal and its the crown not the tires.
Advice to rest IMO, go for a drive with the mechanic and then ask him to switch tires and go for a drive with him again.

Regarding the almost 10K mileage report, mine has ran flawlessly as well, mechanically speaking. Only compliant that I haven't remebered to ask the dealer to fix is the moonroof shade popping noise. This is getting to be annoying, but I'm the only one who is bothered by it since, I've read about it on this board. But it is a real problem not a imagination of my mind.

The engine is truly a fabulous work of art in engineering it is very smooth and with miles it only gets better. This is the same engine I have in my 96 Camry (1MZ-FE).

Stopped by the local dealer yesterday for a quick look at the Highlander. Sticker for a Limited without leather was $33k +. On top of that the dealer had added $1995 for interior and exterior protection. Salesman was pleasant and seemed to be knowledgeable, but I didn't try to talk price since I was just looking anyway. I imagine the dealer would take much less, based on what I've seen here. On the other hand, I'm sure some people probably do pay what the dealer asks.

FWIW, they also had a used 2000 Spyder, marked at $24,995.
  • veekay1veekay1 Member Posts: 180
Actually, yes!!. But thanks for the effort anyway.
All I want to know is whether this is an anomaly with my car only and if it can be fixed somehow?
Its very irritating to manually have to shut off the A/C each time you want Auto climate control.
  • wwestwwest Member Posts: 10,706
What you will discover is even more irritating is that the A/C is automatically turned on, without any indication of same, each time you activate the defrost/defog/demist mode.

If the OAT is below 55F but above 38F the system will perfrom some minor level of dehumidification, and that will help, but once you exit this mode the moisture just previously condensed out of the incoming airflow will soon begin to evaporate back into the airflow, substantially increasing the cabin's humidity level from where it was when you first activated the the defog mode.

Ther safest thing to do, and the least irritating, at least during the colder months, is to have someone remove the A/C compressor clutch relay and then place a small piece of black electrical tape over the (irritating) blinking A/C indicator.

You will be automatically reminded to replace the relay when next spring you want cool airflow and there isn't any!

Many years ago when I was in college and took a course entitled "Heating, Ventalation and Air-Conditioning" (HVAC) (Architectural Degree) I do not recall much of the class but I do recall a chart that described the physics of HVAC. The ideal comfort range cannot be obtained without some heating and air-conditioning. When inside humidity clouds the inside of the windows where you cannot see, turn on the A/C and they clear immediately .... the A/C lowers the relative humidity even when the heater will not. Others will offer better explanations, but I do not believe this was mearly a "quirky" thing Toyota did .... I think it involves physics.
I use to find my Ford Explorer absolutely irritating the way the doors would auto lock ... I appreciate the fact that the HL does not ........ but others have asked if there is a way to program the HL so the doors will lock. To each his own.

    Happy HL'ing to all.
  • veekay1veekay1 Member Posts: 180
ok...all that is fine...but why doesn't the a/c come on when I press Auto in my BMW (or any other car that i have driven for that matter)?????
  • wwestwwest Member Posts: 10,706
The various designs flaws we are beginning to see in many automotive climate controls had their origins at NipponDenso (Japan Electric). Just a few years ago NipponDenso established a beach-head in the US, Denso USA, and now we are beginning to see these same flaws in luxury cars of US make.

Luckily Bosch, and others in europe, have been around long enough to know that you don't go off and implement cutesy new gimmickry without some long hard thought.

That's why, when you turn on the windshield defog/defrost/demist in a BMW, MB, Porsche, etc, you will instantly get a blast of very hot, discomforting, airflow in your face even on the hottest day of summer.

But some really sad news. Bosch is now attempting to use the A/C below 55F for dehumidification, in conjunction with heated airflow, to defog the windshield. A step in the wrong direction.

Took me a while to get back from the new year, hope everybody had a good one. As for your questions to my last post, I can't really answer them. I do not know the specifics of the tires and as I stated before, it has been a few years since I worked in this field, things do change. I guess the best advise is to find a good tire guy to answer questions that specific or find out what the tire manufacturer says. I was just trying to give a possible explanation to a situation that the dealership should have provided when they did not do what that individual wanted. For me, I would not put the spare into the rotation, it would be the dedicated spare and if the tires are directional they can only be rotated front to back on the same side, non-directional tread should be rotated in an X. The main thing you are doing by rotating your tires is preventing the shoulder of the tire from wearing down too much while it is up front and giving it a chance to become square again while it is on the back. A tire with rounded shoulders really does affect vehicle handling, to the point of being a safety issue if not rotated often enough, so even just moving front to back on the same side will help prevent this and prolong the life of the tire.
New subject, does anyone have any experience with this "INVINCA-SHIELD" stuff? I would like to know if it works well and how "invisible" it is. Maybe an alternative to a hood protector?

I just took delivery of my HL 4WD V6 “B” and as far as the numerous US options packages are concerned it is the opposite in Canada. The Base HL V6 has only two options packages “B” and “Limited” and if one desires FWD it is only available on the 4-cylinder model. In a way it does simplify purchasing decisions with the penalty of never quite getting certain desirable features unless one springs for the fully loaded “Limited”. Availability is also a problem, as none of the dealerships (Ottawa) have a good stock on hand so basically one has to either order one or keep checking their model allocations for any given month.

As a side note, I traded in my 99 Accord Coupe EX-V6 and my personal experiences with said vehicle were very positive. Other than one minor recall and the occasional annoying sunroof rattle in the headliner, the performance, reliability and Honda service were above par. I was especially impressed with the paint quality, after three years of heavy use I only had a few minor paint chips on the vehicle. It was the best value for your money vehicle I have ever owned and I personally believe that the HL is somewhat overpriced for what you get although that did not stop me from purchasing one.

Hopefully the HL will be equally enjoyable and reliable in the long run as the Accord was.

Xcarnut: there is some detailed TSB info on this problem on the Yahoo site. This will provide you with a Toyota reference, letting your dealer know it is a recognized problem with a specified fix.

There was alot of talk on this site last year about screeching wind related sounds when travelling at higher speeds when there was significant wind. I haven't been to this site in many months but still experience that very irritating sound. I am bringing the Highlander to Toyota next week to address the issue. Has anyone been able to understand the nature of this noise and is there a 'fix'?

I drove our 2001 RX up to Bellingham WA the other day during a terrific gusting crosswind from the east. What seemed to happen was once in awhile we would get hit with an especially severe wind blast.

My impression was that this wind blast was creating enough suction on the west side of the RX that the window(s) were being slightly pulled from their seals and that resulted in a very loud, but brief, whistling nosie inside the cabin.

Could this be the same as the screeching sound you describe?

Someone had posted a message with good information on buying from a dealer in Massachuesetts with a specific dealership and salesman name. I had saved the posting number for later reference but it appears that the numbers don't 'stick' and this was a mistake or a bug in the system. Also the GoTo Msg# function seems to be off by about 250.

Can someone point me to this previous post or repost this info?

    Robin,
I had a invinca shield dealer install invinca shield over all forward facing surfaces. I think there were around 17 pieces. Total cost was over $400 and the dealer said he lost money since the pieces weren't an exact fit. Whether there have been improvements in the fit I do not know. Overall I am very satisfied with the end product. If you notice the little piece of clear 3M tape on the back doors then you would notice the shield on the front. But it does make for easy cleanup and doesn't distract from the appearance of the vehicle, IMHO.

After lots of research, we purchased the HL V6 2WD with TO, CF, HE, AG, CQ, for $26,634. + tax/fees. Absolutely love the car! It is better than expected. Quiet, smooth, and the fit is Toyota quality throughout. Purchase was made over the internet after using Autobytel, AutoNet, CostCo and sending in requests for quotes to about 30 dealers within Arizona and California. Most the Arizona dealers contacted us but only 30% of the California dealers responded. Problems: most salespeople did not want to go the extra mile to locate the exact car we wanted. They quoted their stock and what was coming into port and suggested we buy what was available or forget getting an HL. Three individuals were willing to attempt to locate the vehicle of our choice but two waited a few days to contact us and the one who wanted to make the sale did a regional search and came up with our vehicle as requested. If anyone has any questions about the process, please write. Wow, what a terrific car! Couldn't be happier.

Owned an 01 since Aug and have had only one other problem with my dashboard - ABS and check engine lite came on after 4 months. Took it in and it was some kind of a "glitch" with the cruise control. Now, my odometer/tach don't work PLUS when I put the car in reverse it makes a beeping noise (audible inside the car only!) like a utility truck! The techs thought it might of been blown fuse(s) but they checked out okay. It's now in the shop awaiting a part for the computer that controls the dashboard. Anyone else have any problems like this? Thanks!

I wrote in initially almost a year ago and started the posts on the sunroof popping. Well much to my dismay, I thought the popping was only going to take place under hot humid conditions. We live in Connecticut where the temps this time of year are usually about 20 degrees or colder. I have noticed lots of popping coming from what sounds like the very back of the sunroof or maybe further back. I never took my highlander to the dealer for the sunroof pops as I was afraid it might leak after dismantle. My glove box rattle is fixed, they did just what you guys and gals suggested but were PISSED when i brought in the copied posts for the fix. Thanks for your input

    iceguys,

Please, I am sure we can find less colorful metaphors to describe someone's anxiety!

Regarding the sunroof popping, I didn't see last year's posts on the topic. From what you said here, it seems the problem is the temperature gradient as opposed to the temperature. (hot outside/cold inside & vice versa).

You could try heating (cooling in the summer) the inside of your HL a little less quickly and see if that has any effect.

The following was posted by member in the Yahoo HL Owners Club. It is suggested that this is the Technical Service Bulletin fix for the "clicking/popping" suroof issue. You might try to run this by the dealer service department.

    Insulation, Sun Roof
      The TSB: NV014-01
      The part number: 08231-00801
      The Description: "Noise Kit"
      Factory Cond. Code: 91
      Fail Code: 57

BTW, although Toyota would PREFER that you have all your recall/warranty issues performed by the dealer from which you purchased the vehicle, you ARE NOT required to do so. I have in the past taken a vehicle to a separate dealership in order to obtain warranty service. I simply informed the dealer that the one from which I purchased the vehicle was not providing service to my liking. They had no problem whatsoever in helping out. You might try this approach.

Either way, I would file a complaint with Toyota US at http://toyota.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/toyota.cfg/php/enduser/home.php

There is a very good chance that this complaint will be forwarded to the dealer and a record will be created at the national level. There is also a phone number which you can call to speak with someone immediately, 800-331-4331, 6am-6pm PST, Monday-Friday.

"Please, I am sure we can find less colorful metaphors to describe someone's anxiety!"

Boy oh boy tidester, aren't we being just a trifle to critical?

Have you bothered to look up the dictionary definition of 'pissed'?

Although many may NOT approve of this type of language, it IS in common usage today, like it or not!

Good post gwiser. We don't go back to the dealership where we purchased ours either. Longo is a little further to drive, but they do everything so well, and with such efficiency, why go anywhere else? They treat us as if we bought our HL from them.

I agree with Octothorpe, Bill at Acton is a very nice guy. I had been out to see him before I purchased my Highlander and spoke with him at length.

i have also noticed that the engine vibration is very evident in the steering wheel at idle, and that you can feel the engine on acceleration. i don't remember noticng this on the test drives i took before buying the hl, and i don't think my friend's hl has it either. thanks for any advise.

I'm looking at the 4V and the 2WD 6V with keyless remote, 6CD changer, and moonroof.
Can soewmone give me the prices they have paid for these models.

I'm trying to compare between the Highlander and the Honda CRV. I don't need the HP or the towing ability.
Also comapring to Hondas new Pilot coming out this summer. Looks like still competition to the HL.

Can anyone suggest what would be considered to be a good price for a Demo 2001 Highlander? I'm not sure how "in demand" they are in. It's a Limited, V6, 4WD, leather seats (with heated seats), vehicle skid control, moon roof ... Basically, it's got everything. It has 3040 miles, and is Super White. The original MSRP is $35,215. The dealer is asking $31,995. How close (above or below) can I expect to get to invoice (which is approx. $30,600)? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
  • jmikerjmiker Member Posts: 21
I would think you should except MUCH lower than that. At the dealership where I ordered my 02 HL, they had been listing a NEW 01 HL Limited for $28,995. Which, of course, is below retail. But at this point in the year, that is what I would expect for a leftover 2001.

    Hope this helps.

My 2001 has occasional harsh shifts on 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd -- I don't think there is any thing wrong with it though. I do miss the buttery smooth shifts my '98 V6 Camry had.

I don't feel vibration in the steering wheel, but have noticed an occasional thump in the steering wheel and, in general, more steering feed back than I had in my Camry.

I found websites & email address for my area by using MSN Search & typing Southern California Toyota Dealers. This is the list that I found: http://www.toyotasocal.com/directory.html

All websites had email address for internet fleet managers. You might try the same thing for your region/state.

  • hlltdhlltd Member Posts: 61
    David,

I would think that you should be able to buy a brand new 2002 equipped exactly the same as that 2001 demo for the same price or less as they are asking for that used demo depending on your area, of course.

Here in SoCal, there is a dealer that is selling LTDs for one thousand dollars over invoice!

Why settle for an abused 2001 when you can get a brand new 2002 in the color of your choice and with the equipment you want for about the same or less money?
  • salliebeesalliebee Member Posts: 2
I just reached an agreement on a 2002 2WD Limited for $500 over invoice, after sending out 17 emails to dealers within about 160 miles of Tallahassee, FL. Thank-you, tedreyes, who kindly provided me w/ a copy of his email blitz letter, which I modified somewhat.

I got the dealer names from toyota.com and sent the email late Thurs. night requesting a quote on a specific configuration for immediate purchase. I rec'd only three real responses on Friday, the next day (and one from a seller who wouldn't quote without my name, and when I provided it, provided an 'example' of what they could sell, and although the seller implied that it was exactly what I requested, it was for a non-LTD. He never did provide a real quote although we exchanged a couple more emails.)

On Saturday, I called the dealers who hadn't responded, asked for their internet or fleet manager, told them I had requested an email quote but hadn't rec'd a response, and asked them to check their email & get back to me. This yielded five more email responses (one of which followed a conversation with a fellow who at first just wanted to tell me that he'd give me the best price but didn't want to discuss numbers. When I said I was going to proceed on the basis of email quotes, he sent me something & we also had a phone conversation.) Some of the email responses offered to look for the vehicle I wanted & some just stated what they had on the lot or coming in.

One of my original emails bounced back to me as undeliverable & I called the dealer to check the address. I explained that I was soliciting email quotes only, and the fellow I talked to said he'd give me an email quote but would sell any HL @ invoice plus $500 + $289 admin fee, whether it was on his lot or he had to get it for me. (The admin fees I was quoted ranged from $199 to $399.) He followed up w/ an email quote. This is the guy I ended up with. He told me that in order to get the configuration I wanted (see below)he'd have to catch it at sea or when it hit port to avoid ToyoGuard & get the mirror I want.

This morning (Monday)I called the $500+ guy & ordered the car. He called me back this afternoon to confirm (with a VIN) that he got what I want from another dealer. The car is still @ sea. I timed this for when the new allocations came out, which really helped.

    Silver 2WD Limited
2 factory options: Tow prep & 6 cd changer
    3 PIO options:
LA10 leather (not LA @ MSRP $1070; this is PIO @ MSRP $1429 that has perforated leather seats for those hot Florida summers)
    PV50 Carpet & trunk mats
    and
    CV20 electrochr. mirror w/ compass

    $29,282 (incls. TDA) + admin of $289=
    $29,571 plus TTL

The highest offer over that was $1850 higher for a vehicle without leather, AND that dealership charged a $399 admin fee + very high doc fees.

The hardest part of the process was trying to compare the quotes. Despite my request for itemization, some folks just didn't want to do it that way, probably bec. it would take too long. If the price was in the ballpark, I called or emailed back to get clarification. If the price was too high, I didn't. The final step will be to send an email back to all who provided a quote to thank them & let them know that I rec'd a lower quote elsewhere & concluded the purchase. (My original email said that if my price was met, I wouldn't shop between dealers; perhaps they'll take us internet shoppers more seriously if they find out we actually buy cars & mean what we say.)

If I had to do it again, I'd fax instead of email. Some dealerships don't seem set up for efficient email quotes, and others don't seem to take them seriously. A fax is harder to ignore.

Sorry to run on so long, but I spent hours doing my homework in advance & perhaps somebody else can benefit from the experience.

Thanks to all on this board whose advice & experience helped me decide on the HL & work thru the purchase. As I mentioned before, special thanks to tedreyes, who provided me with a copy of his email blitz letter.

I would also recommend using the fax attack method. When I sent email offers out on my RX300, I only received 3 responses. I had to call the other Lexus dealerships in my state in order to get a reply. The sales folks don't seem to check their email too often. Even though I don't own a Highlander, I want to help out others looking for the best deal.

However, you still need to be careful with scams. The ole bait and switch was tried on me at my local Lexus dealer. The guy called and said he had our color on the lot. After I told him I was on my way over, he called me back 30 minutes later and said it was sold. Sheesh! After he realized I was gonna walk, he found the vehicle I wanted. LOL! You still need to be careful even if you decide to email or fax attack.

I just spent over six months researching possible
new cars for my family. After an exhaustive search, I decided on the Highlander. We were
ready to start shopping for best price when we
found out about major problems with the V6 Toyota
head gaskets. I'm so disappointed!!! My question
is this; with a family of four would I be foolish
to go for the 4-cylinder just to get the car I
want? We started looking at midsize wagons
(Outback, Passat) but they're so small.

Has anyone heard if the head gasket problem
involves any 4 cylinders? Any ideas/advise?

Has anyone tried to adjust the aim of their headlights? I had some repairs done to my HL and now the left headlight is aimed lower than the right, there must be a simple screw adjustment but it is not obvious....

    Thanks
