On mine, the knob on the tach "window" is the dimmer control(turns left/right). The knob on the speedometer "window" reset the trip mileage(pushes in). Not sure if the Canadian Highlanders are the same.

I have posted in the past that the thigh support is poor in the HL. Leg room is fine. You can put the seat back far enough for most tall people to stretch out the leg. I have found that this helps somewhat in that you can relax the thigh a bit better but still there is poor support. However, if you go too far back with the seat the steering wheel feels too far away (it does not adjust back towards the driver like the one in my Audi does). My daughter has a CRV that I have driven, and when I move the seat way back, I have to really reach for the wheel. But the thigh support seems much better in the CRV.
I have moved the power seat around to find better support and it is possible to find a better position for your thigh. We had a 93 Plym Gr Voy that had great seats but IT was the worst car/van we have ever owned!

The Limited models are readily available with cloth interiors -- either charcoal gray or ivory instead of leather.

Thanks for the reply. I really find the thigh support lacking for me. I've even looked at whether you can add some spacers or something to the seat itself - no.

I'm seeing if one can add padding to the seat. It's either that or wait until the Honda Pilot comes out and get that. It bugs me that much.

    I just picked up a non-limited V6 Highlander.
I want to install some fog lights and am looking
for suggestions/hints from other owners that have
done the same. Is it possible?

Can anyone tell me where to fine a 2002 Highlander 6 cyl. with no options? I live in Southern California.
  • llofgrenllofgren Member Posts: 129
anyone have a pic of the hidden hitch on their highlander?

code3....the only way you can get a HL with no options, or the options exactly as you want them, is to order one from Japan. I know, because I did it last year.

Just wondering if anyone had purchased a protective bra for their HL and what they thought of it. What is the mounting like (does it use existing features, or do you have to drill in snaps) and does it cover most of the frontal areas pretty good? Thanks,
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
I've got to tell all of you who have posted in the past week that I am really impressed. So many other boards have really become ugly, but you all have done a great job of answering each other's questions in a very civil manner. It is refreshing.

I did notice this, but only after I refilled with 87 octane gas. I'm not even sure if this is actually the cause; I guess I'll find out after I refill with 89 or 93 on which I never noticed this hesitation. I usually let go of the brakes during the actual turn when cornering then step on the gas as soon as I finish the turn--this is when I've been noticing the pause.

Does anybody know what the maximum height to jack up the car to change a tire? (13", 14", 15", ect. )
I need to get a new car jack. I'm looking to get a aftermarket jack. The toyota dealer wants a high price for the jack (over $100).
I bent the old jack that came with the Highlander. You might be wondering how I bent the jack. Well... I had a flat tire (front right) As I was jacking up the car I realized I did not loosen the lug nuts. The rim was 2" off the ground. As I was trying to loosen the lug nuts the car lurched forward and bent the jack.

The protective bra has worked great for me. It completely protects the bumper and the front of the hood from chips caused by flying pebbles and small rocks, plus I like the color contrast it provides to my silver HL. Installation is easy. The snaps (one in each wheel well) are already in the wheel wells and only requires that you pop the covers off. The rest of the bra basically clips onto the bumper and hood. The first installation may be a bit difficult only because a new bra needs to be stretched out. The only inconvenience is that you need (or should)remove the bra whenever you wash you HL, as soap and debris will build up underneath it and harm the paint finish. I also use Armourall on it to keep it looking new. Hope this helps.

I seem to remember that several people have posted either here or at the Yahoo Club that they were very happy with some nationwide chain for leather seats. Does anyone remember who that was and what the cost was for a 2002 Highlander?

    Thanks.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
I've had leather installed in many different cars and my personal preference is Katskins. Their kit has more leather parts than some of the others.

    Thanks for the post.
No sure what you are trying to tell me.

I want leather, but not the light ivory.
I don't like how light the cloth is either - its way too like. They call it "Charcoal", but its more like light gray. To me charcoal is like a dark grey suit - close to black.

I would prefer a very dark interior - so that the dirt (I'm going to use my SUV for camping, fishing etc, and will travel on dirt, mud snow etc).

I am going to wait until 2003 - just in case they decide to offer Navigation and dark grey interior like the Kluger in Japan.

    Thanks

As a hunter and fisherman myself, allow me to make an observation about interior colors. I live in Virginia and Virginia clay covers by boots a fair amount of time. When this dries and falls on to my carpet, it happens to be a light brown color which closely matches the carpet on the Highlander.

Its at least something to think about.
  • cmcardlecmcardle Member Posts: 71
I haven't tried, but I should think it would depend on the specific seat. We have a 5 week old, and a Graco "travel system" seat with the base that stays in the car. Even working with the specialist at the local police department, we couldn't get a good fit in the center position (ended up putting it on the right). I doubt having a seat on either side would help that situation.

    Howdy yall,

Have a '01/V6/4WD, bought early last year.

One day I was stepping on the brake a little
hard and noticed a ABS-like feeling on my foot.
I was going around 30 and had to make a fast stop because the car in front made a sudden right turn.

I have no idea how a ABS feels when it is activating, since I never had a chance to
activate one before, but I realy don't think the situation was a case to activate the ABS system.

Could this be a brake problem or just an ABS activating?

I got the brake cap recall done, but I'm not sure whether the dealer did the brake line bleeding or not.

    Thanks,
    John.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
I always suggest to my customers that they need to feel the ABS before they need it. The next time it rains, find a nice empty parking lot and test it out. This will make you aware of what it feels like. Plus, you will figure out when it is supposed to engage.
  • wwestwwest Member Posts: 10,706
Occassionally, in my 01 AWD RX300, on a slightly downward run on wet pavement with the brakes applied only lightly enough to "hold" my speed, I feel something as if the road is "wash-boardy".

I have felt the ABS kick in many times and this isn't quite the same. I have come to wonder if it isn't the automatic brake force distribution system "hunting".

Took delivery of our new vintage gold HL Saturday.
Very Pleased even after waiting 3 months and 2 days.
Happy with form and function of factory bug guard and spoiler.
Snowing today so will experience the handling.

    Looking for advise on:
Seat Covers (Have ivory cloth interior)
Generic Hitch (Have factory receiver, but no hitch/ball)
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
If you already have the factory receiver, all you need is the appropriate ball mount. Take a look at your trailer with the Highlander parked next to the tongue. You need to get a drop/raise mount to the height to make the trailer roughly level. Then, make sure you get a ball with the same ball diameter as your hitch (most of them are 2") with a shank to match the ball mount.

If you want to make it easy, go to a trailer store and they will set you up.

on an alarm pre-wired HL? I can't get a quote from my dealer because they haven't done one and don't know how many hours to charge for labor. This is the one error I made in buying it...not getting the alarm as part of the package
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Actually, I'm in a great mood today. Edmunds seems to be back to normal. Owners and potential owners are asking real questions again and I can answer the ones I can without fear of what is exploding in another topic. It has been quite refreshing today.

Well we are now part of the Highlander club. We purchased a 2002 limited AWD black Highlander. We are very excited, it rides like a dream. We felt like we get a good deal. ($900 over invoice) I know others have found better, but that was good in this town.
    Thanks for all your comments.

I have a bluestone HL with the charcoal interior. We ordered leather through our dealer. It was purchased from and installed by Classic Soft Trim leather. It is a light grey (I think Classic calls it "nickel"). But I think you can really get any color they sell installed. The cost for the leather was $1,350. This includes a $100 charge for perferated leather (with the little holes in it). I think it looks good.

    dominor5,

Thanks for the feedback and tip. Come to think of it, I did just recently fill up with 87 octane - the first tank of gas that I put in myself (it only has 300 miles on it). Maybe the dealer put in 89 or higher initially which is why I'm noticing the hesitation now. Next fill up I'll try the high octance stuff.

We also have 'brake assist' that takes over braking when it thinks you're in panic stop mode. When it comes on, so does the ABS.
I really dislike the brake assist. It comes on way too easily, and startled me the first time it mistakenly thought I was panic braking. They must calibrate it for the proverbial 97 lb weakling.

    33 ft-lbf is what's specified in the service/repair manual.

While we're on the topic, I recently purchased the following oil filters for comparison: Mobil 1 ($12), K&N ($9), and Purolator PureOne ($6). Outside, the Mobil 1 and K&N looked very similar with the K&N slightly bigger overall; the K&N and PureOne are closely identical in size. I must say, though, that the PureOne looks better constructed of the three. The gasket on the K&N was surprisingly loose so I reseated it and crimped the sides of the seat very carefully. The insides of these filters, of course, is subject to debate. Anyway, from the Oil Filter discussion board, you probably won't go wrong choosing either.

Does anyone know if the Highlander will fit 3 car seats across in the 2nd row of seats? We are looking at the Sequoia (fits three across no problem) but with a potential gas crisis we are checking out other alternatives for our family car and wanted to find out if the HL would fit the bill in car seat space...
  • hylndr61hylndr61 Member Posts: 51
Thanks "dominor5" for the information. I always worry about over-tightening the drain plug.

I purchased a Toyota brand oil filter for my first oil change and discovered that the replacement oil filter part number (08922-02011) does not match the number listed on the original filter (90915-20003). Despite some differences in appearance, a couple of Toyota dealerships have assured me that these are interchangeable. The 08922-02011 filter is the one they would install on my Highlander if I brought it in for an oil change.

Is this other than a Toyota factory repair manual,if so who is the publisher and where did you get from? I've been looking all over to no avail. I'm afraid I might have to give in and pay Toyata their extortion price for the manual.

    REF: #5338 - hylnder61
I just performed the first oil and filter change on my HL. The replacement filter was a Toyota and the part number was the same as yours (08922-02011) The new filter was stamped made in USA while the original filter was stamped Denso - Made in Japan. I changed at 3200 miles and used Mobil 1 5w-30 for the first oil change.

I am purchasing mine from Dianne at Carson Toyota (carsontoyota.com). I take delivery on 15 Apr. and this whole deal has been done via e-mail. She has been helpfull and fair. The price was about $900 over invoice. Good luck.

There was a post earlier about the front end mask for the HL - Are ther anyone else with this bra ? If yes what is your experience with it ? is it same as the post above ?
I am thinking of getting this or the clear 3M plastic coat to protect the front bumper paint and hood. I seem to be catching way too many bugs/pebbles from the road and need something that protects it. I am also pondering the bug deflector to prevent the stones from chipping the windsheild. I would like to know where these can be bought if you know. And if anyone in Bay area has gotten the 3M coating done and can recommend a place would be very helpful.
    Thanks,

I just ordered an HL from Japan. I wanted to get a bug shield, but the salesperson persuaded me to go with the 3M coating for about $100. He said the bug shields on the HL tend to really 'buff' in the wind and rattle too. I've always had shields on my pickups and minivans, so we'll see how this works. He 'claims' that this coating is good stuff. If I want more coverage down the road, I may go with a bra. I've got one on my Camry and it DOES protect agains the chipping...although it tends to look a little ugly.
  • kdubs1kdubs1 Member Posts: 21
I am pleased with the con toured HL deflector. It fits well, matches perfectly, and I don't notice any wind noise.
  • llofgrenllofgren Member Posts: 129
tccmn1....is your 3M coating being put on at the dealer? I am interested in either that or the deflector or the bra/mask.
What dealer did you order your HL from and what did you decide on getting?
$100 sounds like a great deal for the 3M protector and I would lean towards that if I could get it.

Who is right? A Toyota dealer told me that the Edmunds invoice is wrong. We were $1,449 diff.. With his(toyota) being the high side. What gives? I all ready have to buy options I don't want with the v-6.
  • jrawlinsonjrawlinson Member Posts: 11
The invoices you see here on Edmunds and Kelly Blue book ARE the correcti invoice numbers. The dealership I buy my Toyotas from had a promotion where they posted the invoices and you make a reasonable offer..the numbers on their invoices matched Edmunds to the penny..they will try and throw in that the Edmunds total invoice price doesn't include Admin charges etc..
  • ssufldhckyssufldhcky Member Posts: 16
Code3.. I agree with jrawlinson, the Edmunds stuff is absolutely correct. The dealer is not
    being honest with you.
  • tccmn1tccmn1 Member Posts: 278
My salesperson stated that the dealer will apply it for the $100 after it arrives. I hope that this stuff works. I had read some much earlier posts about chips, etc. and thinly applied paint on these HL's.

I could change my mind by the time the HL arrives in July and put a bug shield or bra on if I choose. I know I had the DeflectoShield replaced on my minivan once and Deflecto' covered the expense as long as I returned the old one. It had cracked. So, that's an option.

I also know that my Camry bumper seems to chip easily and I use a bra on it for the 2 months of summer here in MN. (ha-ha).

However, my bumper on my old '95 minivan (DC) does not seem to have chipped much after 150K miles...strange...Does Toyota not apply proper levels of paint on all their vehicles?

Does the rubber gasket underneath the front of the hood have to be removed (and not put back on) to install the plastic Toyota bug deflector/ hood protector?
  • pnajpnaj Member Posts: 7
According to Toyota. instructions the rubber gasket must be removed and in two of the open holes a plastic grommet is used in order to accept a screw. Clamps are used for the outer edge.
