All I have to do is pull on that nylon pull strap thingy, when the window is in the up position.

Exactly. This is one of the reasons that I ruled out the highlander. You can't just open the rear window by itself. You have to open the entire tailgate everytime. I like the pathfinder, etc. setup where you can open the window but leave the tail gate closed. It allows for much better transporting of long boards etc. out the back. You can't do this with the HL. What's up with that??? I thought they didn't want this to be a 'minivan'. First we had no center console (until 02), and also the minivan liftgate.

just washed my week old black highlander. Basic model with leather, no sunroof, and no spoiler. Just what I was looking for ...Being 6'4" I tried many vehicles far and wide, but was surprised by the space the highlander had. Couldn't have a sunroof though..saved some money anyway! Installed a hitch for bike rack ( mountain biker!)Need to upgrade stereo...from previous posts how about some specifics on speaker models, etc. Has anyone put a cd changer in the glove compartment?

"Exactly. This is one of the reasons that I ruled out the highlander." Then why are you on the HL board ?

" You can't just open the rear window by itself. You have to open the entire tailgate everytime. I like the pathfinder, etc. setup where you can open the window but leave the tail gate closed." Why not buy what fits your needs ?

"It allows for much better transporting of long boards etc. out the back. You can't do this with the HL. What's up with that???" I got a trailer hitch. I can transport anything, and the inside stays clean.

" I thought they didn't want this to be a 'minivan'. First we had no center console (until 02), and also the minivan liftgate. Who is " they " and " we " ?

I finally decided to look this part up in the Service Manual and found it marked as "Dealer Option", whatever that means, and is likely the reason why it is not installed by default in the 2001s. The diagram shows the filter as part #87139C and sits on top of part #88508 with the flange down. Anyway, wasn't the presence of the pollen filter one of the changes for 2002?

Speaking of filters, has anyone replaced the Air Intake filter themselves? Just wondered what parts you had to disassemble to lift the air box cover off easily? Thanks.

Regarding greggsa4's question "Does it bother anyone else that the rear window does not go down? It does on our 4runner."

No, it doesn't bother me at all (with 14 months and 21,000 miles of ownership). Speaking of 14 months and 21,000 miles - after having my V-6 FWD for this amount of time, I'm still very happy with it and would buy another one without hesitation.
  • xcarnutxcarnut Member Posts: 81
No it doesn't bother us that back window doesn't roll down after 14month and 15K miles of owner ship. It wouldn't bother me if none of windows went down since, we hardly ever need to roll any of the windows down. Except the front driver for toll booths. Though, I use the moonroof often.

Ok question about installing hitch, I am considering ordering one of the available hitch from HiddenHitch or others for primarily transporting bikes, can anyone who has installed one recommend a place to order and also how hard or easy is it to install at home. From what I've read on this board it is not that difficult and can be installed in about 45 ~ 60 minutes with basic tools.

    Thanks.

Yes , It does bother me that the backwindow does not go down - But, As a former Pathfinder owner - I would not give up my HL for anything. 10K mi and going strong.

Also - The HL Rear Windows go all te way down - Don't try this with Pathfinder...

In response to your nasty remarks (#6210), I was just stating a fact and concurring with #6205 and #6206. If you choose to buy a trailer and hook it up everytime you want to buy something, that's your business. Of course you could do that with a camry or a '78 pinto. Your taking the 'utility' out of 'sport utility'.
p.s. Does your tailgate window actually go down as stated???
  • tombuchtatombuchta Member Posts: 11
With about a year and half and 40,000 miles, dont miss a back window that rolls down...its quicker and more convenient to open the hatch, and no worries about dust getting in or rattles.

cross post with accessories and mods

Toyotaguys.com (RomaniaToyotaParts.com) will sell you the interior filter and tray (Cabin Filter Assembly, part # # 88508-48020) for $25, free shipping. It's not currently on their website, but if you email them they'll set up a specific order page for you. I suggested they put it on their online catalog.

Which Service Manual did you look it up in? I have only Volume 2, and I couldn't find it in Section 55. sigh - I suppose its in the other $100+ Volume 1.

My HL (AWD. V6, Unlimited)(18 months old) has done everything I expected. I am most satisfied with the vehicle, and especially happy with the quality, fit, finish, ride, power and economy.

I do not miss a rear opening window. I owned an Explorer prior to the HL and rarely opened the rear window. I would rather have the rear most side windows pivot out and open. I presume that would solve the compression problem whenever you open the rear door windows at speed. Any thoughts or comments?

    Happy HL'ing to all.

It's in Vol. 2, in the section near the end of the Manual where they show the component(exploded) diagrams: look towards the end where they show the HVAC components.

Anybody who has a Toyota service manual - please could you tell me if the manual has in-depth information on re-programming the vehicle's alarm system and other system functions (eg Day time running light sensitivity, remote modes for auto locking doors etc etc etc). I am thinking of buying a service manual soon

I don't want to have to go to the dealer had have someone with greasy coveralls mess up the interior

    Thanks

Another contributor posted this a while back...

Just wanted to post some info from the New Car Features for Highlander. It is only information, but it becomes a topic every couple of months.
The Highlanders are another Toyota, as well as numerous Lexus vehicles, that have the C-BEST system in them. It stands for Customized Body Electronics System. It is a system that allows customization through the dealer's handheld tester with C-BEST cartridge installed.
The variables that are available for customization are as follows.
    Wireless Door Lock Remote Control
    Wireless operation Yes* / No
Door ajar warning beeper Yes* / No
    Automatic Lock operation 30s* / 60s
All door unlock (one press) On / Off*
All door unlock (2 presses) On* / Off
Panic Alert Operation On* / Off
    Door Lock Control (Key)
All door unlock (key turn 1x) On / Off*
All door unlock (key turn 2x) On* / Off
    Illuminated Entry
    Light Illum time 7.5s / 15s* / 30s
Interior lights illum on key unlock On* / Off
    Automatic Lights
    Sensitivity -40%/-20%/0%*/+20%/+40%
    Control logic switchover New(type 1)* / Prev (type 2)
    Theft deterrent
    Passive arming On / Off*
Vehicle horn and security horn On* / Off
    Entry delay time switch 0s / 14s* / 30s
    Power window system
    Key-linked open On* / Off
    Key-linked close On* / Off
    *denotes default factory setting
These parameters come from the "Highlander New Car Features 2001" manual #NCF198U, page 177.
It takes the dealer about 10-15minutes to change any or all items.
    1. Connect meter to DLC3 port
    2. Turn on ignition
    3. Go to "Customize" menu to make selections.
Most dealers do not charge for this service.
    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the information.
Looks like I need a hand held programming device with Cbest.
I'll have to research this a little more.
Anyone know how much and where to buy a CBEST programming device?

    Thanks
  • mcmattmcmatt Member Posts: 80
noticed you mentioned a handheld programmer and the CBEST software cartridge. I did research this a while back. It is made by Vetronix. They used to have some information about it on a website, but they have now removed it. Probably getting too many questions.

When I contacted them, this is what they said. The programmer and software are only for dealers. If you could fanagle your way around that, the programmer would cost $2,900 and the CBEST software cart would be $495. This was a little more than I wanted to pay for a 1 or 2 time change that most dealers are doing for under $30.

I have an OBDII interface to a laptop that shows all the emission information, but the CBEST variables are in the enhanced mode and cannot be accessed if you don't have the proprietary HEX variable addresses and data size. If you find out any of this stuff, PLEASE post, I am a hopeless electronics engineer.

I posted the list of programmable options. It is from a New Car Features manual that you can buy from Toyota for $39. It has a lot of technical theory behind the design of ABS, VSC, transmission, etc.
  • mcmattmcmatt Member Posts: 80
...also, I have the complete $350 set of service manuals and there is no mention of CBEST beyond what it is and what variables there are. To change it they simply say use hand held tester. Apparently the thing is menu driven.

good luck, please let me know if you find anything different.

I appreciate your comments and advice.
It sounds like a lot of bother, to be able to do a one time adjustment.
I know exactly what you mean about "its only for dealers". I am a Mechanical Engineer, I wanted to purchase an alarm system for my home. The company would only sell it to authorized "installers". Their rationale was - I may sue them if I installed the system and it didn't work. Come on - what about individual responsibility?. I don't want to sound pompous, buy I think I am quite capable of installing an alarm system, given my job involves quite complex system controls integration. I would obviously test the system and debug it before I would begin to rely upon it.
Anyway - given that it would be quite unlikely that I may need to reprogram the features, I won't look into it any further.
PS - I have some friends who are EE's and dabble in reading automobile chips and burning new eproms. Maybe I should give them a call?

I am sure most people would be able to install the system competently. Unfortunately, there are a few who will mess up and end up filing suit costing us all bigtime. I can understand the company's position and wouldn't take it personally.

On the advice of a number of posters, I got the Hidden Hitch for the Highlander. I think that installation would have been straight-forward BUT for the fact that my hitch got slightly bent in shipping. Of course there was no way of knowing this until I had struggled and sweated and gashed knuckles trying to get the thing installed. Ended up taking it to a local hitch and trailer shop where, coincidentially, I got to talk with the Hidden Hitch rep about it. They installed it without problem and now I'm enjoying it, but when all was said and done, I'd have been money ahead had I just gone to the dealer in the first place!

We're shopping for a HL but can't decide on a 4 or 6 cyl. Cost is a major factor, approx $3k difference. Car will be driven by my wife to work about 2 miles 1-way, long trips probably 2x/yr. I appreciate your advise. Also, is there any new features on a 2003 HL?
  • llofgrenllofgren Member Posts: 129
dcms1: I had a near identical experience with Hidden Hitch on my HL. I don't believe it got bent during shipping though. It is such a rigid, strong hitch, I don't see how that could happen. I also had to take mine into a local hitch installer and they had to cut holes in the frame to get it on.....but now its great! I talked to HH about this and they re-imbursed me the expenses of installation.
  • mjs504mjs504 Member Posts: 18
I also had the same decision regarding whether to purchase a 4 or 6 cyl. I test drove both versions and felt that obviously the 6 cyl would be the better version, but the 4 cyl would suffice. My decision was based on a budget and the fact that the 4 cylinder seemed to handle all conditions well. After driving the car for 4 weeks, I have no regrets. The pickup is fine with the AC on.

    Highlander

Although it is unchanged for 2003, the trend-setting Highlander continues to offer the smooth ride of a premium sedan with the utility of a Midsize SUV.

When the new 4Runner is introduced this fall, Toyota’s ability to satisfy the diverse needs of the Midsize SUV buyer will be unmatched by our competitors.

For 2003, base prices for Highlander have been held to 2002 levels. Base MSRP ranges from $23,880 for the 2WD four-cylinder model to base price of $26,860 for the 4WD V6.

Highlander Limited models begin at a Base MSRP of $29,395 for the 2WD and the 4WD Limited base is $30,795.

No changes to color. No change.

If Semantics is correct - I'll be disappointed, as I was hoping they would offer DVD navigation, and possibly, steering mounting sport shifting, like they do in Japan for the Kluger.

Just an update on the mileage we are getting. I know many people who are considering both the 4 and 6 are looking at this as one of the factors in deciding.

Have about 4500 miles now. Checked the total MPG for the last three fillups. Came to just shy of 25... 24.89 to be exact. This was about 80% interstate and 20% city/slower traffic.

We are satisfied this, about as good as we had hoped for in an SUV of this size.
  • stevostevo Member Posts: 37
Would someone post what milage they're getting with mostly city driving with the V-6.

I'd like to compare it with our 4 cyl which we drive 80% city.

    Thanks
  • bakertsbbakertsb Member Posts: 2
Our 2002 6 cyl Highlander has almost 10,000 miles on it. We have averaged 21-23 mpg. On our vacation to Florida this summer it was right around 23(most of the time a little over). Majority of the time, I drive it in town and get about 21.5 mpg. We have been very pleased with the gas mileage.
  • shl72953shl72953 Member Posts: 53
I have a 2001 with 23,000 miles on it and with nothing but city driving I get between 16 and 18. On the Interstate I get around 24 and on state roads at 55 I can get up to 28 if the wind is behind me and 22 with the wind in my face.

-Front center console is now standard
    -Heated mirrors are now standard
    -Front windshield de-icer standard
    -4WD 4cyl. now available
-"B" package now gets woodgrain instead of ballpeen metallic
    And that's it

I am thinking about buying a highlander V6 4x4 with just VSC and Side Curtain as option. Is that more available now-a-day? or is it still pretty much like you have to order the limited or with a tons of other packages before you can get those?

    Any info is welcome.

And if I were to order from the dealer exactly what I want, will $1k over invoice be good enough?
  • landdriverlanddriver Member Posts: 607
I've been averaging 21 mpg, roughly 30/70 mix of city & highway; I drive conservatively in terms of acceleration.
  • pdalpsherpdalpsher Member Posts: 136
I have an '01 V6 FWD and have been getting 21-23 mpg. My driving is not heavy stop and go for my commute so I'd estimate 30/70 city/highway. When all highway or v. high percentage of hwy I'll be 23-24 mpg.

I drive conservatively but I'm not afraid to use the accelerator when needed. I'm quite pleased with the mileage and I still love my HL. Saturday will be 12 months and I'm almost to 12K miles.

    sportsterer,
if you press and hold the 'tuning' knob, you;ll get a beep and then can scroll thru options for treble, bass, balance and fade.

someone, oh about 200 posts back, mentioned a mid-range setting, but i've never seen that one.

18 MPG city with a FWD V6. Plus I check my 6K rpm rev limiter every day. :-)
  • mcmattmcmatt Member Posts: 80
There were many posts about this a while back.

If you have the higher end stereo option, the mid setting is part of the normal scroll when you press the right button.

If you have the lower end stereo option, you can get the mid range setting through a fluke in the design. You have to put the right adjustment button for a long time, more than 20 seconds. It will beep or something and then the mid setting will be in the list.

Went to the dealership on Monday for normal service and the manager asked if I had received an recall information. When I told him no, he looked in a loose leaf notebook and found my name, so he performed the necessary service to satisfy the recall. You might check with your dealer.
