I think the WRX (being of rally-born decent) has roll bars built into the construction of the body frame that get in the way of there being a moon/sun roof. A very small one might be squeezed in aftermarket I'd imagine, but you could possibly (?) reduce the integrity/safety of the cross bars. -elissa

You can get a factory one now, in the sedan. In the wagon if you buy a Saab 9-2x.

    But yeah, they're tiny.

I've been using the dealer for oil changes on the 03X. It is becoming a hassle to use the dealer because of the time it takes to get an open time. I had an oil change done at one of the quick lube places (J.L.) and they over filled it. The oil level was above the notch on the part of the dipstick where it twists. I had them drain some out.

Question: what kind of harm can over filling the crankcase cause to the engine? Thanks, Bob L.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
The notch should be the full mark for a warm engine.

If you caught the overfill early, you're probably OK. If neglected, it can sometimes cause seals to leak. Depending on the engine design, it could cause oil to foam up inside the engine leading to all sorts of wierd happenings.

If you caught it early and didn't see any leaks or experience odd behavior, I bet you're OK.

So Joe Spitz now has some specs and photos of the 05's. Note the fuel economy is old, from 04's - Subaru has already advertised improvements on the base engine, see media.subaru.com.

Any other pictures, or XT MPG updates, out there? The XT sounds like a sweet ride, but a real-world range of 300 miles would be a nuisance.

  • bblachabblacha Member Posts: 160
... never mind. 05 info just showed up today on subaru.com. Fuel economy improvements for the base engine (Manual: 23/30 mpg, Automatic: 22/28 mpg) but not XT (Manual: 19/24 mpg, Automatic: 20/23 mpg.)
  • once_for_allonce_for_all Member Posts: 1,640
2 more mpg with the stick vs. my '03. Keep it up, Subaru.

    John
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Actually, the XT did improve. I think it was 17/23 (manual) and 18/23 (auto) for MY2004. Something like that.

    But mileage did improve.

23/30 for a MT? Awesome! That's what the Legacy 2.5i gets.

is the same for 2005 as it was for 2004 - 18/23 MT 18/24 AT
  • bblachabblacha Member Posts: 160
... is awesome. I thought the Legacy accomplished it by aerodynamics, but the Forester case disproves that. Must be the ETC and other computer magic.

Can't wait to take my new one-or-the-other on a long drive to West Texas and see some real-life numbers!
  • ezshift5ezshift5 Member Posts: 858
..it right....more and more every year. HWY MPG up two (30, right/) If this upward trends persists, I may jettison bulletproo '00 clutch intensive Solara V6 - pulls like a six; sips gas like a 4 - for a 30 highway rated XMT...ez
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
30 mpg also means good range. You don't have to fill up every 5-7 days.

Finally Subaru comes through with power seats!! Albeit in the XS but they finally caved. I need a new forester too!! Anyone want to buy a used Legacy power seat?? It fits the Forester like a glove!

Wow, it's just not that important to me. My wife's last car had it and it's one thing we don't miss. In fact it was kind of slow and irritating. I prefer the manual slide.

    -juice
  • bblachabblacha Member Posts: 160
It *is* slow and irritating. But you can safely fidget with it while driving; especially sliding a manual seat back/forth is scary while driving.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Agreed. Neither Deb or I are fans of power seats.

I visited the nearest Subie dealer to get my $25 gift card voucher validated (and test drive a new Legacy or Outback) but, in what has to be a first-time event, no salesperson moved to help me. That dealer must not want my business.

All was not for naught as I did get to see the new '05 Foresters on the lot. (This contravenes what another Subie dealer told me a couple of weeks ago, that "they haven't even started building the '05s yet." Liars. They must not want my business either. >:-P )

At any rate, as we all know very little is new about them. I paid attention mostly to the new colors. Opinions: The Regal Blue Pearl on the L.L. Bean edition is very nice. Champagne Gold Opal is an improvement over Sierra Gold, but it looks dirty even when clean. Obsidian Black Metallic is nicer than Java Black, almost nonmetallic - very small silver-blue flecks.

I like Crystal Gray Metallic best of the new colors but I have to agree with the critics who say it isn't dark enough. Unless the car is parked next to a Platinum Silver car it's very hard to tell the difference; the former has a warmer undertone while the latter is cooler and bluer. Seeing both parked next to a new VW Passat in Silverstone Gray really made it apparent that Crystal Gray should have been a bit darker - closer to the color of the old UK-market RB5 special edition Impreza.

Given the choice, I'd have to go for a non-premium package XT in Crystal Gray Metallic.

    Ed

PS: juice: the dealer also had a Legacy GT Limited wagon in Atlantic Blue with gray interior. You'd have liked it, and I'm starting to agree that it's the best color for the Legacy in the current palette.

Your '05 Forester sighting prodded me to check FitzMall, Russel and MileOne web sites here in the Balt/Wash area, and they too now have several '05 Foresters listed in their inventories.

While driving? I guess to adjust seat comfort?

I set it and forget it. The seat is in the right position before I drive off. Guess I've never felt the need to adjust mid-trip.

Ed: that's my dream car, right there, exactly.

PS I rode in my friend's Lincoln Aviator today, his wife is very petite. Had to power the seats back, waaaay back, seemed like forever waiting there. They do have the buttons on the door, though, which is nice, and A/C built into the seats!

I'm planning to buy a new Forester X soon and imagine that I can get a great deal on one of the remaining 2004s in stock. Looks like the main improvements in the 2005 X is slightly more ground clearance and better side airbags. What do you think? Looking for your ideas.

...gasoline isn't going to get any cheaper (I am sad to say)...and the '05 is EPA highway rated significantly higher 28 to 30 (and a careful driver can always top that).........

individual differences aside, one can take it from there....ez

My wife's about due for new tires on her 2002 Forester S Premium. What is the best combo of all-weather performance and quiet ride? Thanks.
  • xccoachlouxccoachlou Member Posts: 245
I have been busy taking two grad courses and havent had much time lately, but yesterday discovered my 03 Forester had a flat tire on the right rear passenger side.

This was so badly wounded that the tire was not salvageable and put the full size spare on the car.
Thank God Subaru gives us a full size spare.

However, now the tires with only 9053 miles may not not match well with the new unused spare.

If they are not within tolerance, what tires are recommended?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

    - Lou (xccoachlou@yahoo.com)
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
see if you can get a new tire and have it shaved down to match the older ones.

Or, measure the rolling circumference of the tire as accurately as possible. If they are within 1/4" it may be OK (this assumes you can measure it within that tolerance!).

So the red is the same as 2004???

Any news on the 2005 cloth interior in the FXT, the 2004s had this strange blue fleck in the cloth?

Also, would be good to know if the 20mm sway bar from the STi is still a bolt on.

Getting ours (FXT MT PP1) in late August I hope. I am under orders to get the new garage construction project finished first.....

    Frank: I won't open that can 'o worms! ;-)

2005 or 2004? Tough call. I liked the 2004 already and they are bargains now.

I might go for option 3, i.e. buy a 2005 model about a year from now.

Of course then Subaru will have a 2006 model that gets 40mpg and runs on tap water. LOL

But what's this about more ground clearance? We just bought a place at the beach and I might eventually get a permit to drive on the beach, so...

I'm happy with the Falken ZE-512s on my Miata, and they come in the Forester's size, I belive. CR rated them #1 among H-rated all season tires, and I won't disagree.

I have Nitto NT460 on my Forester, and I loved them at first, but they're getting louder and louder. They do have 35k miles on them, so wear was excellent, however there's still tread left that I'll probably miss out on because I'll get new tires due to the noise issue.

So I think I'll get Falkens this time.

The Check Engine Light on my 2001 Forester had been on and off sporadically for the last few weeks. I took it to the dealer and found that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced, to the tune of nearly $600.00. I should have expected that. It has 93K miles. But, I can't call it unreliable. It has always started, even through the leaking head gasket, the bad wheel bearing, the 3 replacement clutches, the three O2 sensors and the bad coil pack. What more could I possibly ask?

Good News. I was within tolerance. :)

Now I have two new tires on the back, a "used" tire as the spare, and 2 one year old tires on the front.
The service dept at my dealership was pretty good, and I didn't feel like driving around all over the place for another Yoko, especially since they gave me a very competitive price.

I've had my Forester for a year, and am extremely happy with it, but let me tell you the new 05 Outbacks are very sharp looking cars.

And just reading what you guys wrote about the 05 Foresters is making me think...

Lou, weakening a bit, but just a bit...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Len: sounds like you've had more than your fair share of issues.

Has 800-SUBARU3 been helpful? I hope you haven't been paying for all that stuff, because you shouldn't be.

93k miles, though. Hmm, isn't emissions equipment covered under a longer warranty? I'd call, I bet that'll end up costing you nothing. I think it's 100k miles. In fact, in some states it's 150k miles, at least for PZEV rated models, like California.

The warrenty from the Subaru.com site is Federally mandated on US Spec vehicles. Unfortunately Len, it's 8yrs/80,000 Miles.
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
80k miles is a pretty good warranty. Too bad Len is at 93k already. Len you could call SOA and see if they'll help but honestly, I wouldn't really expect them to. Maybe if you play up the history of previous problems :-) Unless of course SOA already covered those in which case you might be pushing it.

I know that the seat back should not be covered due to the side air bag. Can anyone recommend a cover for just the seat bottom? online or brick and mortar. I'm in and out of the car so much I'd like to protect against any possible wear spots. Thanks in advance. Bob L.

Just got a 04 Forester X - with Package 6, Auto, Armrest for 18,795. Color is Woodland Peark with Tan Interior - very nice if im allowed to complement myself! Compared it to the CRV and it really wasnt any contest - so far im pleased with it except for some creaking in the dash where the top compartment is located above the clock. My question is is it possible to install the auto dimming rear view mirror/compass yourself? I looked at subaruparts.com and they reccomended a dealer do it. The instructions looked like it coud be a DIY job but they didnt look like they were specific to the 04 model. Any help is appreciated - thanks!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Congrats, excellent price, too. You got side air bags that protect the head and 4 channel ABS, a CR-V doesn't offer that at any price.

  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
It definitely is a DIY job. Probably 30 minutes tops. There should already be a harness in the upper console that you just tie into.

Our CRV has ABS and front side airbags. Not sure if the ABS is 4-channel, but we do have it.

Yeah, the catalytic converter is covered for 8/80. Unfortunately, I'm way over on the mileage. I didn't bother with SOA on it. I just paid the $$ and chalked it up to another Subaru learning experience.

    Greetings:

Here's a new one: I have an 03 XS with the cassette deck and CD changer. Having a long commute, I've recently started with books on tape.

Anyway, this morning I put in a tape and nothing happened. I've tried other tapes, and just get clicks for about 5 or 10 seconds, then it ejects the tape.

I can't hear if the tape is actually moving, but I don't think it is.

Unfortunately, with my long commute, the car has 44,000 miles - so I'm out of warranty.

    Anybody else have this happen?

    Is there a RESET button?

    Thank for any suggestions.

I'm having a vehicle inspection done in the next few days and a wheel will be taken off for brake inspection. What is the recommended torque for the lug nuts on the alloy wheel? Thanks, Bob L.

Also what kind of mileage are people getting out of the brakes where there is disc up front and shoes on the rear? do they wear substantially different?

Thanks for the info on the mirror - i'll order it from subaruparts.com Dealer quoted me about $125 in labor to install! One other question - Does anyone have the Bike Attachemnt for the standard Factory Rails? is it difficult to lift the bike to the roof since there are no step rails? I'm 5'10. Thanks All.
  • pnassmacpnassmac Member Posts: 37
Depends, how long are your arms?

If the bike tray is located closest to the sides of the car and you've purchased a bike-shop-quality bike, it will be relatively simple for you, especially if you have to remove the front wheel. If the bike is very heavy, such as any POS you'd buy from a big-box store like Walmart, you'll work harder because they are heavier and therefore more difficult to lift and maneuver into postion.

I would recommend purchasing and add-on roof-rack from Thule with 58 inch loadbars. What's cool about it is when the rack w/ load bars have been installed and the bike rack is attached to the load bars, you can remove load bars, bike rack, and attached feet by simply unclicking the whole unit, as I would call it, from the roof of the car and lean it against a wall until it's needed again. The unclick process takes only 15 seconds. That way, you don't increase wind noise, decrease mileage, and increase unnecessary wear-and-tear on your equipment when not schlepping your bike.

Also, wider load-bars make your rack (and car) more useful in that you can set the bike rack more outboard which in-turn makes it simpler to load the bike onto the roof. We have this same setup for our bikes, tandem bike, skis, rooftop box, touring kayaks, snowboard rack, etc. Wider bars also allow you to carry 4x8 sheets of whatever no problem.

I have a Specialized FSRXC Pro Full Suspension bike. It weighs about 28 pounds i believe. I don't need any racks except for the bike attachment so i prefer to utilized what came with the vehicle rather than upgrade the whole system. I understand that the towers and crossbars are made by Yakima - does Yakima make any bike attachments for the factory oval cross bars. The Yakima web site seems to support only round cross bars. Thanks for all your help.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Yakima does make clips that allow you to attach most of their accessories to the factory crossbars (which are not made by Yakima). They just clamp around the factory crossbars and provide a mounting hole for Yakima ski racks, bike racks, etc...

You can also get a tower that attaches to the factory siderails and takes the round Yakima crossbars. This gives you a little more utility for hauling lumber, etc... and will allow you to use all of the Yakima accessories.

If you want to keep it simple and low cost, then see if you can get a Yakima bike mount that will attach to the factory crossbars.

BTW, the optional Subaru crossbars are made by Yakima. If you find a good deal online at one of the parts sellers, it's usually cheaper than buying from a Yakima dealer.

Bob: the CR-V has 3-channel ABS. Honda reserves 4 channels for some high-end vehicles only.

The air bags don't offer head protection, that's what I meant. The Forester's side air bags protect the torso and extend upwards to protect the head also.

lurking in the south 40 of a foothill dealership 40 klicks east of the state capitol dome....

Yessssssss..there is it (even bigger in real life)

EPA Highway...the big 30. Plus I've previously indicated that that highway figure is "detuned" for the masses per EPA doctrine.

..spoke with salesman and said to him....."this time next year $17999 plus TLC?" He smiled, gave me his card and indicated he could do it with a 2004. "See you next year"

But it is quite difficult to be non-emotional when it comes to the clever little Forrester..ez
