I have the Subaru/Yakima co-branded bike racks that fit on the factory racks - purchased through some online Subaru parts place - don't recall which one. It's basically the same setup you'd get from any Subaru dealer. I don't like them very much overall. If I had to do it over again, I'd remove the factory roof racks and buy into the Thule or Yakima system outright because they give you more flexibility in what you can add/how and where. Or, if I wanted to save the $170 that the Yakima cross bars cost, I would just keep my factory cross-bars, buy a few "mighty mounts" to fit all my Yakima racks and then buy Yakima racks directly from a Yakima dealer (or ebay). But I would stick with the standard stuff rather than the Subie stuff, personally.

My setup includes: Subaru factory cross-bars, Yakima "mighty mounts" that attach to the factory cross-bars, 2 integrated Yakima "Raptor" bike rack rails that take the bikes with both tires on. See pictures of the Raptor on http://www.yakima.com. There is also (as part of the co-branding) some extra rail that keeps both Raptor racks attached to one another - that's the part that I hate - the co-branded Raptor rails make it difficult to add other components on the roof. Having bought from a Yakima dealer would have given me standard accessories that I could more easily mix and match. I can't even remove one of the Raptors without removing the other! It's stupid.

The one good thing going on with the bikes on the roof is that I am a 5'9" woman and can load and unload bikes easy enough on my Forester roof - no need for runner boards. That's the part I like.

    Hello all,

I am a new member but a big time loyal Sub fan. I had a '93 Legacy L AWD wagon and it was as faithful as the daily sunset and sunrise. I currently own a '03 Forester with aprx. 10,500 miles and I am itching on adding a turbo to this baby! Any thoughts or advice on doing this? I will probably wait until the warranty has expired so I have plenty of time to get in some good research. Thanks to any and all who respond and keep lovin' those subes!

I had that problem with *some* tapes (books-on-tape tapes are poorly made.) It helped to turn the tape physically over and play the other side of auto-reverse. Or, rewind back and forth on a home deck to loosen it up. OTOH, if it happens with high-quality cassettes, the deck's probably bad...
  • mjsnd80mjsnd80 Member Posts: 48
bblacha: Thanks for the response. No tape moves inside the deck. It clicks a few times, FF and REW both refuse to engage on any tape... then it ejects the tape.

It happened like a lightswitch - with no indication of failing. One day it worked, the next it didn't.

It's most likely the transport motor gone bad or a wiring problem. My inclination is the pull the deck and take it to an independent radio guy because the car is just out of warranty, and I believe the dealer would either replace the whole thing or farm it out -- either way the charge would be an arm and a leg!

I've posted before about a click-click-click when my '03 Forester XS is first started in the morning.

It started last fall. They replaced a timing belt pulley that they said was leaking, but it did nothing for the noise.

Nowe the Subaru dealer tells me there is a Service Bulletin on the problem, and it reports that the aluminum internals heat up and expand at differing rates on some cars... and it takes a 5 or 10 minute warm-up for all the parts to reach their designed dimensions.

But it doesn't happen on all the cars; and this is getting worse over time.

The dealer said bring it in as it approaches warranty (now at 45,000 - warranty is 60,000) and they'll get Subaru involved and see if the car needs a new engine...

    Anybody else going through this???

    Thank you

Tape decks are basically disposable these days because the cost to repair usually exceeds what they're worth. Try looking on Ebay, owners who upgrade frequently sell practically new units for very little.

'05s sure look interesting, and the mileage improved on both models. 23/30 would be darn nice, think about the range you'd have - 477 miles on the highway!

To turbo an '03 would cost a lot more than trading up to a slightly used '04.

People have done it, but I've seen a few $4000 turbo jobs that look plain sloppy. You need to spend $7000 to do it right. It's cheaper to trade in.

Martin: make sure to call 800-SUBARU3 to register your issue, if something creeps up at 60,001 miles they're likely cover you.

Stereo - check e-bay and you'll find a 6CD+tape out of a WRX for usually around $140 or so now. Go ahead and just upgrade.

    I have TWO!

Please keep us posted on how this goes - my wife's 03 OBW makes exactly that sound, lasts for 15-20 minutes, then disappears. If there's a TSB or any other info you come across I'd be very interested in hearing about it.

I don't plan on taking her's in to the dealer until she's out of town on business, so its a couple of weeks off yet.

Tapedeck - what's already been said about e-bay. I've seen some new Legacy units (tape + 6cd) going for about $100. I'm looking for a unit from an 03 Forester XS to replace the one in my XT - the green display on mine is invisible in bright light.

    TIA

For $100 I might just get one as a spare!

Or for my brother or sister. Birthday is coming up for my lil' bro, actually. If you see another that cheap, lemme know?

Well, at lunch today I put in the same Eric Clapton tape I'd been trying for several days... it clicked a bit, I hit FF... and it started playing! I think it must have been out of sync. Electronic controls do that from time to time.

On the commute home I put in tape 4 of a 6-tape Civil War book on tape (eager to see how it ends) - and it played fine.

Soooooo, if it dies again, I'll check out E-Bay.

    = = = =

Regarding the click-click-click engine clatter for the first ten minutes or so, I will take the car back to the dealer in the next week or so and ask for a copy of the Service Bulletin. The service manager said it addressed the expansion of internal aluminum engine parts -- and that after it gets good and warm, the pieces fit fine and the noise goes away.

My biggest concern on the engine noise is that I'm close to 45,000 - and the noise is slowly getting worse.

After several stops in (when they couldn't hear anything wrong), I parked the car at the dealership overnight, met the service manager there at 7:00AM and started the car. Oh yeah, he heard it all right!

    I'll update with findings.

    Thank you.

If by 'adding a turbo' you're looking a way how to install it into your Forester X , then my advise is to buy an XT instead. There's no need to invent a wheel. I know a guy who was itching on adding too. We calculated all the expenses with a labor and found that adding will come him to $ 3, 500. Taking into account that the labor in Russia is a bit cheaper than it is in the US, your expenses will probably reach a total of $ 4, 000 - 5, 500. Weigh up the price you can get trading your X and compare what is more suitable for you -either having a repaired vehicle or getting a fabric-made one. Obviously the latter. Good luck.

Score one for the FF tip!

My Miata has valve clatter but fortunately the belt squeeling drowns it out. LOL

    Time for some service...

This guy on Nabisco put in a turbo, he broke into the 13s in the 1/4 mile, about the same as the XT, but spent $4000 IIRC. With no warranty, and after going through all that trouble.

Yours is probably worth 80% of what it was new. Probably $19-20k right now. Get a left over 2004 XT and you'll pay about $23k. $4k difference, tops. New car, new car warranty.

    Just makes more sense financially.

With the imminent delivery of my 2005 Legacy GT Ltd wagon, I've started getting Raven (my 98 Forester S) ready for sale or trade in. Today, I gave him a thorough interior cleaning by vacuuming and cleaning out the numerous storage compartments. I also removed the grille and replaced my Hella Supertones with the stock horns. I've decided to not swap out the rear sway bar and aftermarket speakers.

While going through Raven, I started remembering all the travel and tribulations I had been with this vehicle. He's been a great vehicle and I will miss it quite a bit.

The Forester was my first introduction into Subarus as well as the beauty of AWD. I'll never forget the first time I got to take my Forester into the snow. It happened during a freak overnight snowstorm at Yosemite in May just weeks after I had taken delivery. The feeling to be able to just move right through a parking lot filled with 2WD cars spinning their tires was amazing.

juice: Remember project Forester 2.5RS? Those were the good old days!

Anyway, it looks like I'll just turn the odo over 100K before I switch cars. It's reading 99950 today so by Monday evening I'll be in the 100K club.

Ken: you don't even *have* those speakers. I do. LOL

Any how, I'll have to save up for a GT so we can continute our East Coast/West Coast friendly rivalry. :-)

Funny thing is with each mod, neither of us wanted to go first, we wanted the other person to be the guinea pig. It all worked out nicely in the end, though.

I'm afraid this question will start some religious war on the best care for an auto tranny, but here goes...

I live in a very hilly area where shifting my automatic Forester XT from Drive to 3rd gear often helps with engine breaking on the down hills and acceleration on the ups. Dealer told me as long as when I shift from Drive to 3rd, I'm not pushing it over read line (72 MPH I believe) that that practice was perfectly acceptable. However, I read in the owners manual that one should be at a complete stop before shifting into Reverse (duh), First (ok) and Drive (huh)? So If I'm in 1st, 2nd or 3rd and "up shift" to Drive I want to pull over and stop first? Why would "up shifting" to Drive ever be a problem? Any one have any thoughts?

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It's OK if the speed is appropriate for that gear. I don't think the engine revs will match, so you'll have a little extra strain on the driveline, nothing too bad.

Cars used to have an O/D off button that did the same thing, for towing for instance, so basically you're using the same feature.

    juice,

Yeah, I know. Hope you're enjoying them. I was considering swapping them out with another Forester friend of mine, but he lives too far away for it to be practical.

BTW, would you want a Kartboy shiftknob? Since I won't be driving MT for a while, it's yours if you want it. The thread fits any Subaru MT shift lever. That way, a little bit of Raven will always be alive (sniff).

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587

    juice,

It'll be on it's way shortly. I could put a dab of the shift lever grease on it too if you want. ;-)

Actually, I think I still have the original Kartboy shift lever. I'll send that along too. It's a bit short for the Forester (plus you already have the STi lever) but it could work with your Legacy.

99 Subaru Forester L, 91,000 miles all services and oil changes current.

One month ago I started seeing my oil light flickering on and off on my way to work. I parked the car immediately and checked the dipstick. It registered nothing. I walked to the nearest store and then drove over to a store to buy 2 quarts of oil. I drove it to the nearest place to get the oil changed and they filled it to the top. No idea where the oil went. I have regular changes, and it's not on the floor of my garage or on the engine.

One month later. I've checked my oil after every fillup since. It's read full each time. Today after not driving the car all day yesterday I try to start the car (brand new battery, 1 mo old) and it's slow to start and once it does start it also has a knocking noise. I shut the engine down immediately and then try to start it again. No knock, however as I drive down the street it sounds like it's knocking for the first 50 yards or so. I drive it straight to the Subaru dealer where I bought the car.

They wanted to do an engine flush and replace the oil. They said the oil was low again. Can someone tell me HOW an engine flush is going to determine WHERE all that oil went? Seriously. I have a small crank seal oil leak and they found some drips around the oil filter. Not quarts of oil worth. Subaru also says that the car is not burning oil. I don't want to turn over the key and then have the engine freeze because I haven't checked the oil everytime I drive. They can't tell me where the problem is, but the oil has to be going SOMEWHERE???

Any ideas? I'm about at my wits end. They are keeping the car over night and will try starting it tomorrow to see if it knocks.

    Thanks

Had an oil leak in my '01 Forester two times. Neither time did I find oil on the garage floor. First time it was the "piston pin access hole cover". Sounds like an obscure part. Must have been a [non-permissible content removed] for the dealer to find it! Oil only leaked when the engine was running (and the pistons were pumping) so it would leak on the highway not on my garage floor. I only knew it was leaking oil because I 1) measure oil drained after each oil change and noticed it was down 1/2 quart more than usual, and 2) when I change my oil I inspect the entire undercarriage of the car and noticed a little tiny drop of oil coming from near the drive belt through a little rubber seal - I took a digital photo of the leak and the dealer confirmed it was a problem on site. As for the oil pump leak, I did actually notice a tiny drop of oil on my garage floor from that one. I wish I could tell you the tests that my dealer performed to determine where the leaks were. I have no idea. But if you are in the CA bay area - go to Carlsen Subaru, top notch. -elissa

New to the board and no time to peruse the whole thread. What is real world mpgs for Forester with the standard 4 for combined highway/suburban driving with a light foot? Also, am I correct in thinking that the base model is fairly well loaded for the money compared to the top of the line non-turbos? Can you add leather with the side air bags after market?

    Thanks!
  • edunnettedunnett Member Posts: 553
There are lots of good places to look for the MPG estimates. Real world does map to the claims on the stickers and the websites. See consumer reports, edmunds, carsdirect, etc for the car you are interested in to get the MPG estimates. Like you hint at, the ranges are dependant on driving conditions and how you drive, what the load is, if the A/C is on, etc. I had an XS manual model and got 25 MPG average on mixed hwy/city (sticker said 22-26 I think). Again, for how the models are equipped, try this very fast link to compare the models of your choice: http://www.edmunds.com/new/2004/subaru/forester/index.html?tid=ed- munds.n.mmindex.popular.num3.1.subaru*
There are some big differences in features between the X and XS with the premium package. You can always add leather aftermarket. You will be negating the side impact airbags though - they will be blocked.

    Hi Elissa

However, I read in the owners manual that one should be at a complete stop before shifting into Reverse (duh), First (ok) and Drive (huh)?

This only refers to shifting into Drive from Park. It implies that there is a brake interlock on the transmission that will not allow shift into a motion gear without the brake fully depressed. Shifting amongst the forward gears is not affected by this.

    Hope that helps!

Not true at all. Most (if not all) aftermarket leather kits are designed with the airbags in mind.

on my drive home somewhere near Palo Alto on highway 280.

It was strange to see 99999 suddenly go to 100000. Seeing that extra digit really made me feel like I've had driven a lot with my Forester.

The funny thing was that I had anticipated some kind of "high score" or "bonus life" melody play from the Forester when it rolled 100K. I guess I played one too many video games when I was a kid!

  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Ken- Hey it's a Subaru, 100k is no big deal. You don't get the "bonus score" music until you roll the odo over at the 1 mil mark :(o)

I wouldn't assume the oil was low. You could have low oil pressure, perhaps from a faulty oil pump. Or a slow leak in the head gasket.

mpgman: I average 25mpg, best ever broke 30 mpg with a feather on the throttle. Mine is rated at 21/27 by the EPA, and the 2005 models are 23/30, so you could do even better.

And Yes, I've seen Katskins leather on a Forester with side air bags, they even have the SRS logo on the side!

Congrats! We just broke 45k on our '01 last week. Logged 4 years of very happy Subietimes end of last month. Other than the very, very occasional clutch shudder, a (since removed) bug shield that's not "Colorado cross-wind rated", tires, and a battery, we've had zero issues - tires and battery don't count, really. Biggest issue has been stuff falling onto it in the garage, lol!

Can't say enough good things about our Forester. Great vehicle from a great company. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Still very busy at work. I stop in every now and again, but no time to post anymore. :(

    Take care, everybody.

The '05 Outback GT makes me drooool... (but we'll have to wait til they're on the used market - too steep for us right now).

-ken: Life is good ! Very busy, as mentioned above. Picked up a small catamaran this spring, and am taking classical guitar lessons. Also camping quite a bit.

Getting back into photography (again), too. It would be great to do some shooting together. I'm still shooting film, and just acquired a 20-35mm zoom for my system. We spent Father's Day hiking in the mountains and doing some creative photography. My son has picked it up as well, so it's really fun. We just upgraded his point and shoot to an Olympus Stylus 120. He actually has a pretty good eye, and he's only turning 9 this fall.

I'm holding off going to digital until I can get an affordable full-frame sensor body for my lens system (Canon EOS). I have a pretty big investment in my lens system and want them to work the way I intended (field of view, selective focus power changes with smaller sensors, as you no doubt know). Prolly a few years away, but I can wait.

<content :) > We got 27.4mpg on the Forester our last tankful with mixed city driving. Gotta love the 2.5!

Had the FXT in for its free scheduled maintenance (oil change and tire rotation) and took the opportunity to check out the new 05s on the lot. I like the new Crystal Gray color but as has been pointed out it's not different enough from the Platinum Silver. In fact unless the two are side-by-side they're hard to tell apart. What I'd like to see is keep the Crystal Gray but drop the Platinum Silver and replace it with Steel Gray (the color of the lower cladding on the two-tones). And while I'm on the subject of color... I like the Obsidian Black better than the Java but it still has tiny multi-colored sparkles embedded in the paint. Is there something wrong with just a nice deep black?

    -Frank
  • lfdallfdal Member Posts: 679
Nice deep black - nothing wrong with the idea to me, but I'll bet the marketing types don't think it has enough "glitz". I can see it now - lets call it Midnight Black, or Deep Black, or Black on Black or - they'd never dare call it just "Black"

    Larry
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Of course you're right that the marketing types won't allow it to be called just plain old "Black" and I really don't care what name they settle on so long as it's really Black.

just installed the auto dimming mirror and it shakes quite a bit going over bumps and on uneven pavement. Any advice on how to make it less sensitive to vibration in the cabin?
  • leo2633leo2633 Member Posts: 589
Make sure that you replaced the original spring clip with the replacement clip that should have come with the auto-dimming mirror. Although the original looks the same, it is just slightly smaller, and will allow the mirror to shake. I hope this helps.

I posted this in the maintenance forum but no one replied so I thought I would try here. I have a 2001 Forester S with a sunroof and have had a leak into the C-pillar on the driver's side inot the storage bin in the trunk area. I have an uphill driveway and the rear of the car is always lower than the front. I had the service station clear the drains of the sunroof but that didn't make a difference. I think they only cleared the front ones as that is all I see. Does anyone know if there are rear drain tubes and if so where they are so I can clear them? Thanks.
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
I don't know the answer but it would make sense that there would be drain holes in the rear. How about backing into the driveway so the nose is pointed down hill and see if the leak goes away? At least that way you might be able to isolate the location.

    -Frank
  • gmanmdgmanmd Member Posts: 20
I've thought about backing it up instead, but I only get the leak when it rains real hard, so it's not consistent. I thought it would make sense that there are drain holes in the back but I just can't see them. It would be interesting if there are only holes in the front and then I will be forced to back my car up the driveway all the time.

You can't replicate the problem with a garden hose?

    -Frank
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'd expect you would be able to use Subaru Bucks. It's like cash to the dealer. Why wouldn't they accept them?

I have an aftermarket ASC moonroof and my installer actually requires a servicing every 2 years to keep the lifetime warranty valid. He told me they lube the rails and clean the drain holes. Perhaps that would solve your problem?

We haven't done it yet, though, the car is still new.

    -juice
  • gmanmdgmanmd Member Posts: 20
I used the hose on the car with the front end down and there was no leak evident. So I'm pretty sure it's from the sunroof and that the rear drain tubes are blocked. Now I just need to find them.
