Nope - these days you need a code reader to diagnose a check engine light. Outfits like Advance Auto and Autozone have them, and, can check the codes for you.

2000 Jag S-Type 3.0, I just had my Transmission rebuilt. Drove my car 1 day and my Engine Safemode came on and my car barely goes 5 mph. Now I have 3 codes coming up.

P0401 EGR System fault (exhaust gas recirculation)

P0430 Catalyst Efficiency low bank 2

P0171 Fuel Trim bank one condition

I took to muffler shop and had the Catalytic Converter replaced.
Any other suggestions for codes?

I'm sorry, they never gave me the codes. It was the cables going to the pistons. They replaced all of them and the car is running fine.

SO... I'm "that girl" they wait for who knows nothing about her car! In the dark so any guidance would be Greatly appreciated! Engine warning light went on. Mechanic said is was the "air flow intake valve or sensor? & #7 or 8 coil" needing replacement. Strangely he replaced coil #6 for free saying there was no cost because it was his error, hmmmmmm. Couldn't afford to fix at the time and he told me it would not harm the car if I didn't fix it but when it finally stopped working completely, I'd have to replace it. Didn't get part replaced then. Drove car for a year. No problems other than engine light stayed on & car felt like it was missing a bit, until... Temperature guage suddenly jumped to the hottest guage could show. Drove it home. It drove fine but stopped driving it, afraid of overheating, Car sat for 4 months, other than driving up & down block now & then for battery. Warning light remained on and Each of those one block drives tipped the scale on Temp guage to the danger zone before I could park it. Finally forgot to start it for a bit. Battery died. AAA jumped it, started fine, said battery fine just needed a good charge. had it towed to shop for initial repair, finally. Tech says car is trashed & Jags are Junk!Claims he can't keep it running long enough to do diagnostic, has to put a new battery in it & and wants $1000 to even begin working on it!! Any car symptoms sound familiar to anyone? I really need a little Jaguar S-Type V8 knowledge to get it fixed already, not get taken advantage of, and to NOT break the bank unneccessarily. : (((( I REAly miss my car!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions
And thanks for reading through this Reeeeeallly long question

Im having the same missing / chugging problem in my 2000 s type 4.0 i was overheating as well and I refilled the radiator and made sure the cap "clicked" when i TIGHTENED IT. i THINK THE CAP WAS LOOSE AND THE STERAM WAS ESCAPING. MY FIRST CLUE WAS WHEN MY HEATER WOULDNT PUT OUT HEAT. WHUPS damn caps ;-)
As for the missing I have no idea. If you find out why, please let me know

Hello to all my jaggers here. I have a 2007 S TYPE and have had it for a year now. I am having no issues with the car and find it hard to beleive that some of you are having such issues with yours. Most of you have 2001. My question is, would'nt it be logical after so many years of driving for it to have a few problems?

I have a 2005 S-type and have been experiencing the following: engine light on with a restricted performance message. I was also experiencing the fail safe limp mode/message reading Fault brake...
I had taken it to the dealership and they soaked me for $400+ that didn't fix the problem. I was getting P1111 & P2135 codes. Today I replaced the throttle body assembly in hopes of resolving the P2135 limp mode issue. (only time will tell) but after a few miles of driving, my engine light and restricted performance message came back on...any suggestions?

I've got a 2005, 4.2L V8 S-Type. Runs like a champ with no performance problems of any kind. The "engine" light just came on yesterday. I checked the oil and it was a little low. I was due for a change and had it done today, hoping it would fix the warning light. However, the light is still on. Anyone have an idea of what this is and if I can fix it easily? (as opposed to going to a Jag dealer) Does anyone have a list of error codes for this vehicle? I'll go to a parts store and have them run a diagnostic on it to see what comes up. Thanks for your help and input!

I had 3 misfired on the entire passenger side of 2004 jaguar s type v6 .. I have changed the 3 coils and spark plugs but I still have a check engine light nn how can i remove this? Is there a way to remove it without a scanner

You'll need a scanner to clear the code I think if it doesn't go out within say 40 driving cycles (couple of days?).

These codes don't really tell you the actual component that is defective--so the cause of the misfire could still be there. Shutting off the CEL will tell you soon enough.
