Guys if you dislike the Aztek don't buy one! Simple! But why must you flame on the people that do? Surely there must be more elevated subjects for you to pursue. I do not own one, but would buy one if I needed a M.A.V. The point is that it is different!
You say your Aztek is perfect..!! SO why is GM redisigning the Aztek in it's second year of production..?? I do not think this has been done to ANY car in over 30 years...!!
I too drive by a Pontiac dealer eyery day and I a see the same 10 Azteks on the lot...
It's simple the Aztek is a nightmare for GM, it has become a joke in the marketplace..even Edmunds calls it "Pumba the Talking Pig".
However, everyone in the deserves the right to purchase what they like.. REMEBER THE:
1.Pet Rock 2. The Yugo 3. AMC Pacer 4. Oh and the AMC Gremlin See the Aztek does have some company...! Your ANTI-Aztek buddy.
The redesign is all about STYLING which some deem too RADICAL. As far as the quality of the PRODUCT there is no question that the product is performing very well.
Perhaps since you know virtually nothing about the product you should spend your time on more worthwhile pursuits.
By the WAY: The AZTEK does not have an entire PAGE dedicated to PROBLEMS associated with the vehicle. If you want Problems go visit the BMW x.5 site. For twice the PRICE you get triple the PROBLEMS.
But you LOOK marvelous driving your Prestige vehicle that is all glitz ......and DEFECTIVE substance.
I'll take PUMBA. He is cute , dependable and loyal.
I do agree with you that GM have apparently missed the BULLSEYE of the MAINSTREAM PUBLIC TASTE with the AZTEK.
You like lists...here are a number of products with broad appeal:
1. The BIG MAC (great food.. sure) 2. WWF Wrestling (great entertainment.. right) 3. The K Cars (great selling vehicle...want one) 4. WinStar (see the problems)
Styling remains your only valid CRITICISM of the product.
The dealership I'm buying my green Aztek from has 35 to choose from.... unlike most of the people on this site I'm not afraid to be different, or purchase something without approval of my peers. Both of my good friends dislike them, however, until you drive one and spend any amount of time in one your not educated enough to compare it to the Gremlin or Pacer. ( even though it was good for a laugh )
I am looking at purchasing an aztek and am one of those forward thinking people who like the design and am impressed with the features. I am concerned about the engine not being big enough especially with the pull of the AWD. Can someone who owns one please comment on this.
I was hot for the PT Cruiser but was scared away by the low rating it got for the driver in a front end collision. Still waiting on the ratings for the aztek before I make a final decision.
If I had one wish it would be for a 210 Hp engine for my BLACK BEAUTY. ( stop smiling tpgun)
The ENGINE performance to date has been very good and compared to the RAV 4 and CRV it has tons more jump. The new 4wd is supposed to be considerably lighter not dragging on the engine. The transmission and engine seem well matched and the vehicle does everything I need it to. Also surprisingly nimble......a few weeks ago I had to swerve to avoid XMAS tree that had fallen from snowbank and it had no real noticeable body roll.
I suggest you test drive the vehicle to feel comfortable. I'll say this to date I know of no dissatisfied customers.
Yeah the yellow is REAL sharp. I wanted yellow but it was not available in nSEPTEMBER.
Looking forward to seeing one.
Matero: I sent a copy of your NOTE to someone I met in one of the other rooms. He was real curious as to this problem. He actually wanted to talk to the RENTAL Cars operations manager.
Would you happen to have the name of the RENTAL CAR company and the location in Orlando? I'll pass it on to my buddy? Thanks in advance for your help.
I've been on business in Fort Worth recently (live in Orlando). I rent cars from Avis and have seen a lot of Azteks at the Avis at the Dallas/ Fort Worth airport. Maybe the Orlando Avis has a bunch of them as well.
Does anyone know when the crash test scores will be out for the Aztek?
I saw my first used Aztek in the local paper for sale by a private party 3k miles, fully loaded, he was asking $16,900. I'll be buying slightly used if the crash tests are acceptable.
Yeah, the yellow ones are on hold right now. I live in the Detroit area and originally the yellow AWD's were supposed to be released the beginning of February. My wife and I went to go order one and now we are being told that they won't start production on the yellow ones until some time in March. That means we won't take delivery of our yellow buddy until mid April or early May. But it is WELL WORTH the wait to get the color we really want. I really like the yellow since it makes it stand out more and it reminds me of the concept vehicle they had on display a few years back. I am a big car nut and can't wait to get mine. I am already growing my thicker skin to ward off the unintelligent comments made by others. In my opinion, if you don't like the Aztek then SO WHAT! Don't buy one!! Instead, put your money down on one of the countless number of cookie cutter, bland styled SUV's. I am sticking with the one that generates controversy!!
As for growing a Thick Skin?? The only IGNORANT people are probably right here in this room.
It seems as if people who own everything from Subaru's , Passit's, BMW have a compelling desire to waste their time by coming here and thrashing a vehicle that ...by all accounts is performing admireable for it's owners. They percieve the vehicle as "ugly" ...so like bullies in a school yard they feel they must go out of their way to kick??? Perhaps their time would be better spent on vehicles with real QUALITY issues (BMW x.5 or Ford Escape...but they don't because those vehicles look good)
Other then unsubstantiated claims that some rental units are having door handle issues......by the way not one owner has confirmed this fault.
Well , let us know when you take delivery of your YELLOW BEAUTY!!!
I am really interested to hear feedback from those who own the AWD version.
I am curious in finding answers to the following:
-what kind of mileage they are experiencing? -can you tell when the rear wheels are active? -has anyone tried to remove the spare tire? -any gripes about the awd?
Finally, some positive comments regarding the Aztek. I was getting sick and tired of all the Aztek bashers.
Osaita,
A 210 hp engine would be real nice, but then again more horse power is always nice. The Aztek is by no means under-powered like a CRV or RAV 4. If the horse power is really that big of an issue remember you could probably get another 15 horse power out of the engine just by putting a high quality aftermarket exhaust on.
Here is the link for the for the NHTSA crash ratings for the Aztek. The frontal crash ratings are supposed to come out later this month.
I bought my AZTEK in September before the 4WD's were available. So I cannot really comment on your questions regarding the 4WD's. In addition, I believe the 4WD's are only just becoming available.
I will be going to the Auto show here in Toronto and I'll check out the 4WD. But sorry ....I cannot answer your questions regarding the 4WD.
CRASH TEST: 5 Star rating for frontal side impact 3 Star rating for rear side impact.
I own an AWD GT with 800 miles on it so I'm past the break-in period. Gas mileage fluctuates wildly between city and freeway driving. Average gas mileage in the city is terrible, about 16 mpg. Freeway mileage is much better, about 21.5 mpg. I have no idea whether the AWD has ever kicked-in. If it has, I couldn't tell. I really need to drive it in the snow. I have never tried to remove the spare tire because I have the roll-out tray, and it would be a major pain just to get to it. But then again that's what AAA and OnStar Roadside Assistance is for. Did you know that a one year subscription to OnStar Safety and Security plan is included when you buy an Aztek equipped with OnStar? All in all I have no complaints about the car so far. It's no bimmer, but then again Kissfan wouldn't know that because he has never owned one. Sorry Kiss, but you have to stop bashing the X-5 a car you know nothing about. Remember how upset you get when people bash the Aztek because they no nothing about it?
You are absolutely right about the x.5. I Have not had the opportunity to test drive the x.5. I have driven both the Ml300/Acura MDX.
What I do know about the x.5 is that there is an entire BOARD on Edmunds dedicated to a discussion of the problems associated with this particular luxury "finely" engineered vehicle that is twice the price of AZTEK.
I do agree.......I only know what CUSTOMERS are saying.
There is only one source for bimmer chat and that's www.bimmer.org, not Edmunds. Also, the problems you speak of, are not nearly as widespread as you would like everyone to think. What's more the dealerships seem to be having great success fixing most of them. Moreover, a 3.0 X-5 is about $10,000 more than a loaded Aztek here in the US, and worth every penny. Hey, the Aztek is a great car for my wife and kids, but I wouldn't be caught driving one.
gonzo : Nothing better to criticize than people's writing style?
juancho : While I would love to buy a $30-40K truck or SUV, the fact is I can't come close to being able to afford that. "Worth every penny"... maybe to someone who can afford and extra $10-15 K. Most people can't.
Honestly, after driving by the dealer and looking at the Aztek about 15 times, I like the looks a lot. Still want to see the small modifications though before I do anything.
Also, since I've been looking at the Aztek I notice minivans more now, and (this is a little embarrassing) some of them look sporty. This Mazda one I saw today looked kinda *cringe*.....good. Ahem. Anyone else dare to admit to such a confession?
what a great endorsement juancho1 just gave to the Aztek, and this coming from someone who *owns* an AWD GT Aztek ! Wow !!
If juancho1 ".... wont be caught driving one...", but his wife and kids can be *caught* in one, it is even more interesting !!!
Say, kissfan, do you not have a job to do, instead of this one-man Aztek crusade, answering word-for-word every *negative* Aztek comment about your Aztek car ? If one were to scan this topic for all of your posts, I bet there must be one in every 10 or so posts; that would make you out with close to 100 posts on the Aztek...That is a lot of posts for one single individual...
Man, you do love your Aztek and if we've heard it once, we have heard it a zillion times already... Rest your *voice* will ya ? It ain't worth you haemoraging over something so trivial as a car. C'mon, that cannot be all you care about, is it ?
The Aztek is a good car for what it does. It is new enough that it would take sometime before most owners can have enough stat on their vehicle. until then, it is wise to keep your fingers crossed and not tout this vehicle as spotless or faultless.... It is only a matter of time ....
easy does it now posters... love it or hate it, the Aztek is here to stay. Nah. Who am I kidding ?, maybe 2002 will spell the Aztek doom with a better selling Rendevous, the Aztek will be history soon ! Remember, GM is already slowing production of the Aztek to accomodate the demand for the Buick. It is only a matter of time before this vehicle is HISTORY. (:-))
Criticizing the Aztek is fine. The big problem here is that the same guys pop their head in every few days and repeat what they have already bashed. It just doesn't add to the discussion. Is Aztek ugly? I think so, but I am still interested in learning about it. Who knows, if they fix it up a bit with the 2002 restyle I mite think about it.
An Aztec, 1SB package with sticker of $23035. Held $212 over invoice and customer was very happy. I have not seen a customer this excited in a LONG time. Customer was an internet lead and traveled 35 miles to buy this vehicle. He lives about 2 miles from a Pontiac dealer but choose to do business with me. The easiest time I have had with a customer in about 2 months. He test drove Montana. Jimmy and Suzuki XL-7 and decided on Aztec.
Look... I've been on this site since its inception and I've ALWAYS defended the Aztek, despite my dislike of its styling. Any of the regulars here will vouch for that. In fact, my roommate is seriously considering the vehicle and I just told him yesterday that it is an "excellent vehicle" with "few if any owners posting problem reports". YOU seem to be the one who's sensitive here... I was VERY clear in my posts that rental cars are abused... and in terms of "second hand stories"... this is my business partner telling me about his experience that morning renting a car. He didn't tell me "the handle broke off my AZTEK"... he told me how "the handle broke off my rental". I also went out of my way not to suggest my PASSAT was anything but perfect... no car is. I think it's quite apparent that you like your vehicle and I'm really happy for you. It's nice to be a satisfied customer. But don't even TRY attacking MY car because there is absolutely NO data you can provide (except YOUR obvious SECOND HAND stories) to show the passat to be anything BUT one of the safest, most reliable, comfortable cars on the market. I went out of my way to say that ... and again, go back to all three forums now... the OWNERS of Azteks had posted numerous times that their only complaint about the interior of their cars was that the door release handles seemed "cheap and flimsy"... their words, not mine...words from OWNERS. This did not keep them from buying the cars. So, I wasn't suprised when my business partner told me of his experiences with his rental Aztek in Florida earlier this week. I didn't trash the car. I defended it by saying "you know how kids are with rental cars". You however, took the low-road and went out of your way to attack MY car because you heard of somebody who's timing belt broke. Well, first of all, I seriously doubt that story. Unlike the Aztek, All Volkswagens come with a 10 year/100,000 powertrain warranty with no deductible.. so, unless he had over 100,000 miles or the car was over 10 years old he wouldn't have had to pay ONE SINGLE DIME for the repairs. If a person's timing belt goes and the car is repaired for free, seems like a good reason to KEEP the car not get rid of it. I'm not going to get into a debate as to which is better the Passat or the Aztek... because people don't cross-shop the two. In a nutshell, I posted acurate information on the Aztek... what we're here to do. You, keep posting the SAME information "I love my car" over and over and over again. If you don't have any new aztek information to provide, stop insulting the rest of us here and just read.
I'm not shocked at all by that statement. It's the reason GM can't sell Azteks. The target market was 20-something men in the market for small to mid-sized SUVs. GM now admits the majority of people who purchased Azteks are 40-something MOTHERS who cross-shopped MINIVANS (which is exactly what the Aztek is... a Minivan). Therefore, the statement "It's fine for my wife and kids but I wouldn't be caught dead in it" makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, Pontiac gambled that 20 year olds would buy the Aztek purely because it LOOKED like an SUV. Meanwhile, 20-something males site 2 reasons they passed on the Aztek: The styling was too "over the top" for their tastes (being polite here...) and the price being way out of their reach. GM execs claim the problem with the Aztek is NOT the styling, it's the price. YET, in a strange twist, Pontiac spokespeople are saying GM WON'T be adjusting the Aztek's price in the forseeable future, but the STYLING is going to be updated by the Fall. What's the deal with THAT? Considering the Buick Rondevous (the Aztek's Twin) is larger, has a third row seat and a more sophisticated air suspension is UNDER $30,000 with the AWD option, GM HAS to lower the Aztek AT LEAST $3,000 ($5,000 would be better) in order for it to sell.
In an unrelated note, if you're seriously thinking of buying an Aztek, you should consider looking in your local classifieds because you can get an almost new Aztek for THOUSANDS less than retail. You should also check out "Cars.com"... you can enter the car you're looking for and your zip-code and they'll list used models abvailable with pictures, details and prices. Here's one example: At Kitahara Pontiac Buick GMC in Fresno, CA you can buy a white 2001 Aztek with only 182 MILES for (and this is the ASKING price...) $16,999. Even if you assume the car has NO options... the original Retail was $21,995. You'd be saving a minimum of $5,000. Take a look around before you buy a new one. You could save a LOT of money if you don't mind buying "slightly used".
A proper solution for this problem would be for GM to require that all the high brass in Pontiac be made to drive this vehicle for 3 years/ 36,000 miles;which ever comes first. Yes, to expensive restaurants, country clubs, etc. - where ever their upper class life styles take them.Only fair, isn't it? The young stylists can't be faulted- they have Homer Simpson's vehicle to emulate. The head honchos at Pontiac gave it the green light. You see, I watched the Jetson's and Batman when I was a kid and dreamed of owning a vehicle that looked the same, so I purchased a new Corvette Stingray in the early 70s. Man o' man, Harley Earl , Bill Mitchell, and the rest from GM's old Fischer Body Design group must be rolling over in their graves!Bring back Delorean and the GTO!
No I wasn't professing to be a rocket scientist but continuing my "silly" theme: It also doesn't take a "rocket scientist" to see that there is nothing new about the Aztek except its controversial styling. Please don't list coolers and attachable tents as some sort of great find. Optional coolers are offered on Soobs and as aftermarket accessories for other vehicles. Attachable tents were offered by GM back on Nova/Omega/Ventura/Skylark hatchbacks in the 70's. Versatrak you say, hardly noteworthy! Subaru has been doing it for much longer and much better, something to do w/GM buying 20% of Fuji Industries?. Basically the Aztek is for those that want minivan room (albeit a bit smaller inside)but can't commit themselves to being a minivan owner. There's certainly nothing wrong with that! Let's just keep things in perspective.
No, there is no earth breaking technology here, but Aztek is a good vehicle for mini van haters. If you are ok with the looks, Aztek might be for you. I am waiting to see Rendezvous as I think that may be a little less controversial to own. ;-)
I agree that the Rendezvous does seem to be a more palatable expression of the same design. I predict that it will fare better in the real world of sales and may just eat into the Aztek's already limited sales numbers. Of course, a restyling and perhaps price adjustment on the Aztek may help alleviate this possibility. It will be interesting to hear about your impressions of the Rendezvous, especially in comparison to the Aztek.
I hate to admit it but I AM driving an Aztec as my assigned car. I am always amused by the bizarre reactions of other drivers during my daily commute. This AM on the way to the office, I was pointed at an laughed at by a twenty-something in a rusted out S-10. It doesn't bother me in the least, because I drive this thing as part of my job traveling from one meeting after another, day after day. Last four months I spent driving an Express, before that, an STS. I will say that the Aztec is quiet, has plenty of power, (3800 II would probably wear out the tires faster, and engage the traction control more frequently), and it seems to average around 20mpg with my admitted lead foot. For me, I really don't care for the styling, but it gets me around. The door handles are designed to be opened by your fingerTIPS, not by the palm of your hand, and I've noticed that people who have small hands tend to grab them with their whole hand, maybe that is why they are breaking off. Really haven't had any problem with the thing, although just as I was taking the thing to the carwash this morning, the SES (Service Engine Soon) light came on. I guess I will take it over to Service Research at lunch and see what is going on with that. I'll keep you guys posted... Kissfan, one of the major reasons that the quality of this thing is so good, is that its made in Mexico, those people make little money, the management holds axes over their heads, and there is a line outside the door of the plant three blocks long of people waiting for a job. I've been in there, and the people are VERY willing to bend over backwards to do whatever you ask. The finesse operations have to be seen to be believed. You'd never get that kind of extra work in US plants, nor should you have to. As for the design, it is 7-8 years old, so most of the bugs were worked out long ago in the other U-Vans, It BETTER build well, if you know what I mean.
Thank you gmdrone. Nice to hear from someone driving the vehicle in the real world. I am looking at buying one here shortly and have been waiting for someone with real info. If it can stand up to being driven all day from meeting to meeting then that says a lot.
I am one of those people who will NOT drive a minivan or a stationwagon. But the previous posts are correct the price is too high. If GM is monitoring any of this (as they should) lower the price and I bet your sales would improve.
I'm not sure why people use the Daytona Aztek to show how the car can look. The Daytona Aztek is just painted to resemble the original concept car here.
I've seen your posts on other boards in here and have always valued your first hand knowledge.
I certainly appreciated your thoughts about the reasons for the QUALITY build of the AZTEK. Your REASONED analysis is appreciated and certainly counter balances some of the drivel we tolerate here.
My wife is a big racing fan and Daytona is the big one! We're having a party Sunday and you're all invited!
The big event for us is the pre-race festivities. Everybody who comes to our party will get a kid's dart gun, you know, the kind with those suction-cup darts. Every guest's darts will be color-coded. The big event will be "Shoot the Aztek Pace Car" as it does laps around the track. The more hits, the more points you get. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
We have a 60" giant screen so there will be ample opportunity for folks to score. If by coincidence the Aztek spins out when your dart hits the screen/car, you'll get the $1000 bonus prize!

Remember, GM is already slowing production of the Aztek to accomodate the demand for the Buick. It is only a matter of time before this vehicle is HISTORY. (:-))

They claim the reason for the Aztek's sales disaster is not the styling but the price.
So, they announce a redesign with no pricing changes.
If it wasn't so sad it would be funny.

I haven't seen more sloppily assembled cars in years.
I am one of those people who will NOT drive a minivan or a stationwagon. But the previous posts are correct the price is too high. If GM is monitoring any of this (as they should) lower the price and I bet your sales would improve.

Why in world didn't GM just put the concept car into production? it looks so much better.
I certainly appreciated your thoughts about the reasons for the QUALITY build of the AZTEK.
Your REASONED analysis is appreciated and certainly counter balances some of the drivel we tolerate here.
Come back and visit.

PS: Great Car
1) People frequently laugh at, and have "Bizarre" reactions to the Aztek. But, since it's free, he doesn't care
2) People with small hands can snap the door handles off.
3) "Check Engine" light coming on in a new car isn't a good thing.
4) It's a 8 year old design.
5) Starving, frightened people paid $5 per day in a third world country make excellent craftsmen.
Private note to GM drone: Maybe if they administered beatings on the assembly line GM could improve quality even more!
Hope to see you here!
