Hi Bruce, I hope you or anyone can help me! I just bought my first buick, and the rendezvous, is a late 04. It has 1500 miles on it. I bought it from dealer w/full warranty. I bought CXL Plus, AWD, and I don't know what I did!! I have been in dodge caravans new in 84, new in 88 and new in 94. They all took me to 100K+ w/o any issues whatsoever. I trusted and loved them, but after all those years, I thought I would try something new. I hate this car!! It blows all over the highways in the wind, and when cars/trucks pass. It rides hard, and I feel like I am back in my old VW beetle days. Please tell me, I have Affinity tires on it, which I think are "truck"? tires, which came with it. I noted you had some kind of issue w/your tires. May I ask what it was and what your thoughts are, or anyone's out there? I also am sorry I didn't know of these boards pre time, because I am handicapped, and I can't believe the issues with bearings, the cost of repairs and the poor help from GM. I never had these issues, and I am on a fixed income. I pray I didn't screw myself in buying this type of car, and already with the low mileage, know I won't keep it long, before I go back to Dodge Caravan. The ride supersedes this REndezvous, and for the price, the buick should rate far and above a caravan. Would diff. tires make it handle better. Oddly enough, the AWD I test drove had Goodyear tires. The Affinity's are Firestone, which I thought after the huge law suit, was out of business. Wonder if the dealer swapped tires??? All I know is my spine which is already bad, is even worse, in the 3 wks of owning this vehicle. Any help, thoughts, appreciated. Please feel free to Email me anytime directly to my email.

Thanks much, greatly appreciate your helps/suggestions. Gail

The first thing to do is check your tire pressure and make sure they aren't overinflated. The factory may have overinflated the tires to prevent flatspotting while the new car is in shipment, and dealers often forget to adjust the pressure.

With those low miles, you may be able to trade the tires in on a new set at a tire dealer too.

    Gail:

Don't freak out ... your Buick comes with a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty, so each and every repair will be completely covered under warranty for quite some time!! While it does sound like there are some bad Rendezvous out there (just like there in every single model line), there are also LOTS of good ones out there. With approximately 200,000 Rendezvous on the road, I believe that there are many more "good ones" than "bad ones". I believe there is a good likelihood of having few problems. The 2004 Rendezvous is a Consumer Reports "recommended" vehicle. I have 40,000 miles on my CXL Rendezvous and I love it. If you want extra "peace of mind", in terms of repair costs, and if you are willing to pay for it, you can purchase an extended warranty to cover repairs beyond 36,000 miles and 3 years. I personally did not purchase such a warranty. Will I regret it? Maybe. Maybe not. But I'm willing to risk it. YMMV.

As for the ride, my Rendezvous has a much better ride than our former Honda Odyssey, Hondra CR-V and Isuzu Rodeo. I second the recommendation to check out your tire pressures -- that doesn't sound right. The tires that came on my Rendezvous were Uniroyal Tiger Paws Touring SR. Still on original tires here.

Btw, I am still on my original BCM and I have all original wheel bearings. No problems with those items whatsoever.

Also, ANY vehicle on the road will be affected by semi-trailers passing close-by. The Rendezvous weighs 4,300 pounds -- so it's not a "lightweight". I don't find my vehicle blown around any more than my previous vehicles (Odyssey, CR-X or Rodeo).

Relax ... check out the air pressures, and enjoy your new purchase! :):):)

    Hi Jeff,

I thank you very much for all the information you have offered. I will keep them all in mind and appreciate the information about the vehicle and it's history, etc as stated above. I was suprised to hear you say you like it over the other vehicles you have, but am glad to know there are some very nice people out there on the forum, sincere in their responses. This is the first time ever attempting any type of forum and I am pleased with the outcome, and everyone's help. Again, thank you much for your response and the information within it. WIshing you and STeve and all of us, a great week. I"ll try to "Relax" a little!

We once owned a 2002 CXL AWD with Goodyears and loved the way it handled and rode.I would probably rate it better in that department than our new Toyota Highlander. We only got rid of our CXL because of BCM issues.I would try some different tires.Ours never blew around any on the hiway.Good Luck.

Per lunch with Bob Lutz, the next Rendezvous will have a new name:

I started having this problem the other day, the door locks just randomly unlocking when I am driving mostly in the afternoon when it is hotter. (live in DC) After a while the speed of unlocking increases, until something switches and the electronic locks stop working. Also, a click, click etc., starts from under the center dash and keeps on going even when the car is off. When I come back in the morning all is working fine again. The the whole process repeats again, starting in the early afternoon.

Has anyone heard of this problem, how much would it cost to fix?

Also, I notice the initials BCM used alot in this forum can someone define.

    Thanks Ahead of time

    Hey Gail!

We leased a 2002 Rendevous when they first introduced it and loved the vehicle. Had only one problem with it in three years and that was covered by warranty.
We turned it in and picked up a 2005 in late December, 2004. It has been in the shop eight or ten times with minor, but annoying problems. My biggest concern was the noisy Goodyear Integrity tires. The vehicle handled differently and it seems to like stability in sharp curves even when I was driving the posted speed.
I keep complaining to Buick about the tires and they contended the tires were fine, but out of the blue I got a call from the local dealership that they had been authorized to replace the Goodyears with Michelins. It has made a noticeable difference in the noise and handling of the vehicle. However, the 2005, which is a CXL, does not have some of the features [such as memory seats] that the 2002 CX had on it. Overall, it has more wind noise, etc., and I doubt that I will choose another Rendezous when the current lease expires.

Sorry, if I have discouraged you.

    body control module
There have been lots of failures. One post related this to location where water stayed around the BCM causing it to fail.

Sorry Just now read this. I had to have wiring added for the electric brake control. The factory wiring in the towing package is a 5 wire I believe. It definitely didn't include the brake control wire. Have fun!

I just purchased a 05 rdv from a rental company. I am not sure if it is a CX because there is noting on the car to suggest that. I was wondering if you found out about adding a third row seat? Is it possible and if it is how costly is it? The rear cargo area does not have any cut outs in the floor so it may not be possible in the model I have. Thanks. DKT
  • lenfishlenfish Member Posts: 1
Could you please give me the name and phone number of your local dealer so that my local dealer can contact them. My vehicle is currently in the shop for the same problem (5-18-05) and I was told the cost would be in excess of $1100.00. If their is any information that you could give me please E-mail me directly at Lenfish2282@aol.com. I only have a limited amount of time before the vehicle is finished, so please be quick, if you can. Thank you very, very, much.

I'm looking at a awd Rendezvous cxl. No where on the car does it show that it is awd or cxl. Should there be an emblem of some sort showing this? It is a 2004
  • drumguy82ddrumguy82d Member Posts: 2
Ive got a 2002 CXL AWD

Recently the odometer stopped displaying the mileage and now it says Error before I start vehicle, 16 is displayed...is this the error code? Anyone know what it means?

Also, I have read some about folks having problems with the condenser --how did you know? Just wondering as I just recharged my A/C, but it corresponded with my error code (which is still there)
  • drumguy82ddrumguy82d Member Posts: 2
It will be on the back right of the vehicle...I think there is base, then CX, then CXL

If it is base, there will be nothing there

    Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the info on the tires. I spoke to the dealer, he took the car out (repair customer service rep) and told me there was nothing wrong with them and that the affinity H/F's were the best tires for it. I'm trying to trade or sell the car at this point, as it's only 2 months old, but I don't feel comfortable in it at all. The numerous forums here and the repairs really worry me, but above that, I've had a very difficult time getting used to not being able to see around the car, around the corners, backing up and the drivers mirror is way to large for me, and a pillar from the roof to the dash blocks the dirvers view. I fear an accident and I just can't adjust to the vehicle. If anyone is interested, it's in Chelmsford Massachusetts, has only 2300 miles on it, is a late 04 model, and feel free to email me. I've come from the dodge caravan after 20 years of being in them and they've never failed me, never felt unsafe, always had excellent maintenance and honest was trouble free driving for me. This is the first time in over 20 years I ventured outside that line, and I'm sorry I made the attempt. I worked months on researching and driving various vehicles and thought for sure this was the one, but I just don't feel comfortable in. I am hoping the dealer will work with me as well and hope to hear back from him shortly. Thanks for you response, and enjoy the holiday weekend.

    Hi,

04 RDVZ, 2400 miles on it. 3 month old. Put A/c on for first time today, and about 20 mins with it on, heard a rumbling type of noise and felt a vibration which reminded me of a muffler many years agon on another car, rubbing the undercarriage. I got very nervous as I am a female (not that it matters, but I was alone, except for Onstar), and wondered if anyone has heard of this, or has any idea. It sounded like something was flapping under there, but when I pulled off the hwy to look, there was nothing. I shut it off and turned it on again, and didn't hear the noise, but I also go to where I was going, rather quickly out of fear. Does anyone know of any undercarriage issus or if this was something from within the engine rubbing when A/C is on? This is an AWD CX with plus package. Also, I notice this "module" on the boards that causes problems around the A/c? Do I need to worry about that or a condenser issue so new into the car? Maybe it's nothing, but I do worry. Thank you.

    Hello,

I would like to share with you my experiences with a 2002 RDV CX that I purchased in July 2001. I took a risk knowing it was a new model with no reviews whatsoever.
I have traded the RDV last night for something else and will miss some aspect of it.

    Pros

    -Nice gauges
    -Nice Radio/Sound
    -Visibility
    -Oil Life indicator
    -Low washer indicator
    -Space
    -Comfort
    -Ride
    -Price

Follows are problems experienced under warranty

-I had installed a remote car starter. Installer could not install has it keep blowing the remote start unit.

-Different installer, worked for a few months, then BAM, BCM failure. At the request of Dealer, remote starter was removed and BMC replaced.

-Asked the dealer if they had a recommended installer and asked the Service Guy if it’s safe for me to try the recommended installer. Followed his advice and a few months later, BAM, BMC failure.

-I have since then have it removed and gave up on the remote start..

    Cons

-About once every six months, the Lock/Wrench indicator comes on. That means no power door/windows/radio. Shutting off the engine for a minute, it reset itself.

-Occasionally, shifting to park will not cause the door to auto unlock.

-Last week, shifting to park will not cause the door to auto unlock, the car radio indicated 12:00. The same day for no reason the car would not start. I always have a booster pack on hand and saved my but a few times. Since this episode, all is well.

Follows are items that I find unacceptable for the first three years in the life of a vehicle.

-Wind noise leak, front right door. I had it repair under warranty. Of course when the warranty expired I had to pay for body work because structurally the door hinge support had to be redone.

-Front well bearing replace about one a year? This is not a good thing. Under warranty

    -Wiper controller, under warranty

-Water leak inside left real lens of brake light, it would fill up like a glass of water until the water reached the bulb and blow. I have silicone the thing and it appeared fixed.

-Last nigh, the car now has a fait whistle noise.

-Interior heat thermostat control. In order to ensure I have full heat, I must slowly turn the knob from Hot(right) slowly turn the knob towards the center until I hear a POP sound then I can put it back full right and get full heat.

-The first year, the heater/flan blower started to vibrate and I could feel it quite pronounced in the steering well. Under warranty.

-Had the replace my car battery after 3 years. This is not good.

    -Interior Radio Clock loses time

-Horn location, visibility on steering well, makes it difficult, press hard.

-Front suspension single audible knock when vehicle starts moving. Out of warranty.

-Key ring Plastic Remote break. Used glue to re attached.

-Driver, lumbar knob keeps falling off.

Over all I am displeased with GM. My last three vehicles when GM and now moving to the other side. The fact that they are in financial difficulty does not inspire confidence either.

Yea, I had an 02 as well and it was a great vehicle. Then I traded it for a new 05 CXL. What a difference. The 05 is so noisy that its had to carry on a conversation.
Has been in the dealer's shop 8 or 9 times. Has 5k miles. Go figure. I should have got the Honda!
  • rostarrostar Member Posts: 2
I used to like my 2002 Rendezvous CXL. I have 65000 miles on it and I the last year have had to replace both front hubs, a/c condenser, alternator. The paint is starting to blister on the front hood and the paint is almost gone on the radio controls on the steering wheel. The only thing that is a known problem that I haven't replaced is the BCM and the intake seals. Sure Its just a matter of when not if on these items. This car has the worst quality of any vehicle that I have ever owned. And don't give me the "every vehicle has problems" search the internet for problems and look at the resale values. This car now has a well earned reputation as unreliable. Reliability may have improved as the years have passed but It could also be that some of these problems don't always appear until a year or two or more. Avoid this car as it is a concept that was poorly constructed. Unlike in 2002 when I bought this there are now several vehicles that can do what the RDV can and from companies with better track records on customer service and quality.
Keep trying to prop up the image of the RDV jk27 but faced with reality it is a losing battle.

"The fact that they are in financial difficulty does not inspire confidence either".

While I don't blame you for moving away from GM, the fact that even people who are happy with their GMs are going to Japanese campanies just makes it all worse. Japanese cars aren't perfect either.

Strange that you had so many issues, the Rendezvous is rated well by Consumer Reports.

We have had problems with the AC on our 2003 RDV since we bought it new (well as a demo with 5,000 mi.). The AC is fine one minute and then it will cycle warmer for no reason and in a few minutes it becomes warm inside. It may blow warmer for a while and then suddenly get cool or stay warm for days. We have asked that this be checked at least 5 times when in for service and always get the argument that they find nothing wrong that the temp. they get is @ 50 degrees! Now that warm weather is here again, we're starting all over again with the same problem. Anyone else experienced this??? Also, the dealer we bought from uses free tires for life as a big sales gimmic. The only catch is you have to have your vehicle serviced every 3,000 miles and tires rotated every 6,000 at the dealership. Of course the salesman said if you go over a reasonable amount its no big deal. Well of course when you ask for the new tires you find if you haven't stuck to the schedule exactly--no tires. Of course its impossible to stick to this exact schedule unless you have service done more often and before its necessary and then in the long run you end up paying more than if you bought your own tires! If you raise enough stink, the dealer will usually split the cost with you--big deal! Another thing is that now that the vehicle has a little over 35,000 miles, every time we go in for service, there's another $200-300 maintenance recommendation that you "really need to have done" or you will soon have major problems. The last two included "fuel system maintenance" at $275. The next time it was transmission maintenance at $300. At this rate, seems like we'd be better off to gamble on a major problem--would probably be cheaper. Any advice on this--I don't know enough about it to argue with them!!!!!!!!!! To top it off, the rear view mirror just fell off yesterday and the cig. lighter (just used to charge cell phone) disintegrated when charger was removed!!!!! Also, every time we hit a pothole, the check engine and low tire pressure lights come on and wont go off till we go to dealer and have them reset!! These minor problems are becoming a major headache!! Sorry this is so long--Thanks for your help.

We have a 2003 Buick Rendevous CXL which is just out of warranty. This is only our second summer of ownership as we bought it in late 2003. All last summer we had problems with the AC--had it in to the dealer 3 times. Each time they said they could find no problem. Then summer was over so we let it go. Today its 88 degrees. Had the air on full blast for over an hour and temp never got below 84 inside. We're going to push till we get this taken care of but now no warranty. Could you tell me how you got Buick to pay for yours? We did buy the ext. warranty (mistake) but I'm not sure the ext. warranty covers AC anyway--does anyone know? Any help would be greatly appreciated. We are really trying to like this vehicle but we sure seem to be having alot of problems. Yesterday the rear view mirror just fell off the windshield! I stopped by the dealer and they couldn't help--had to make an appt. So we have an appt. to get the rear view mirror stuck back on and since the warranty is out we'll probably have to pay for something that should never have happened! Thanks for your help.

We also bought a 2002 CX and have had some of the same problems. Just had the front left wheel bearing and right tie rod end replaced, hey only $800. Now that it is hot out, the A/C doesn't work, light goes on, but clutch or fans don't seem to engage, added freon, as pressure was low anyhow and still nothing. Last fall the A/C worked before it went in for water under the carpet (apparently leaking from the A/C, cause the drip tube was either clogged or not there). They tried to charge me for replacement of the wiring harness and labour at about $460, cause the error message was displaying and the speed sensor was going haywire. When I argued, that they should have cought this at the inspection before wuaranty was over, they charged me for half the cost and ended up repaitring the same harness.Well since it was cool after, never noticed if A/C was OK, now I see it isn't. Warranty period too short. Here in Canada it is 3 yrs, 60,000km, leases have better deals. Now front brakes and rotors also apparently need replacing. We only have 76,000km on the RDV. Any help on A/C reimbursement would be appreciated.
  • buickrdv02buickrdv02 Member Posts: 9
You may have water under the carpet on the wiring harnes, like we did, make sure your A/C works after they fix that if it is that.

how did you get Buick to replace your condensor? Mine just went out on my 2002 CX with 76k on it.
  • buickrdv02buickrdv02 Member Posts: 9
A/C was checked today and leaking from the condensor, which needs replacing. Bad news it is $1100 CDN. I told them to wait a few hours for me to decide what to do. I called back and they said it was likely covered under a warranty for 4 or 5 yrs from date of manufacture for that part because of some service bulletin. Will keep everyone posted so they too don't have to pay, if I didn't. Here's crossing my fingers, as they are going ahead with the repair based on that infromation that it won't cost me. Who knows though, the labour just might.
  • buickrdv02buickrdv02 Member Posts: 9
Funny, mine is almost exactly the same milieage, have them check the service bulletins, are you in Ontario as well?
  • coatingmikecoatingmike Member Posts: 44
If you have documentation that you have had complaints while under warranty for an item such as the AC, then if what they find to repair would have been under warranty at the time of the work they should still honor it. If it was something they thought they could get away with they would simply never ever find any problems when the warranty was in effect and then get everyone to pay for it at 36001. I had a mirror replaced this way, they couldn't find the problem over 4 visits over two years, but finally I went to a different dealer, documented teh search and they fixed it without charge. Good Luck
  • buickrdv02buickrdv02 Member Posts: 9
OK here's the deal I got today. If your condensor on the A/C is gone for a 2002 model and you have lees than 4 years from date of manufacture and less than 80,000km, it is 100% covered. YOU DON"T PAY!! If tthe car is over 80,000KM and less than 5 years you split the bill. Hope this helps, and if you already paid, I would go back and request a refund, as it is part of their goodwill warranty now.
Thank Goodness I have cold air again!

My 2005 Rondy CXL has ugly brownish rust on the rear wheel hubs. Noticed this at 1500 miles. Vehicle now has 5,000 miles. Is this normal or something I should be concerned about? The dealership has had the vehicle in the shop several times and has not mentioned anything.
  • rdvslumprdvslump Member Posts: 2
I have the same problem with bad condenser. Vehical has 86000 miles and less than five years old. Did the dealer contact Buick for you or did you have to do it?
  • mcorbettmcorbett Member Posts: 1
I own a 2003 Rendezvous CXL and really enjoy owing this car. It took a little getting used to it after driving a van, but glad I stuck with it. The CXL goes great in the snow & rain! I just have one problem that no one at the dealership can duplicate. When I turn on the air conditioner to a mid to high speed, I hear a knocking noise; like there's a woodpecker in my car. The temperature outside has to be 80 or better for it to start. When I turn it down to 1 or 2, it goes away. Has anyone else had this problem?
  • buickrdv02buickrdv02 Member Posts: 9
They checked and noticed a service bulletin for it. Apparently you would in your situation pay half the cost as long as less than 5 years from delivery date as new.
  • buickrdv02buickrdv02 Member Posts: 9
Have you tried without the air on and blower fan on, I am thinking a blower fan or motor could be the culprit, because the fan it not part of the A/C operation.
  • rdvslumprdvslump Member Posts: 2
Contacted GM customer assistance today. Rep turned me down for any goodwill warranty support. She also said there was no service bulletin pertaining to the condenser issue. At this point I am ready to trade my problems away into an Acura MDX.

    You can always try here:

    http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/

I was glancing through and found the issue with the wet floor. They do not tell you what the fixes are for these problems, but at least show some of the issues.

I was looking at a 2002 CXL w/ 30K on it, but after reading the stuff on here, I have reconsidered the purchase. The vehicle has been relatively trouble free (2 repairs -- one very minor, the other a bad sending unit for the fuel guage) and still has warranty from the factory for a couple months, but I don't need a troubled child if they are that bad. If I haven't ticked the dealer off yet, I might be able to get a hold of the Service Bulletins for the Air Conditioning that they have. I really do like the vehicle......but is it worth the gamble?...the price is right too..... :)...descions..descions....

    Hi,

I would suggest you take your car to a glass shop and ask them to super glue the mirror on for you. I have been an auto. claims adjuster for over 30 years. I am not happy with my new 04 Rendez and am working to trade it very soon. There are far, far, too many issues with these cars, my tires are so rocking hard, it's unbearable and giving me spine problems. They are affinity tires. Dealer won't work with me on them. I don't know if anyone can help. As for your mirror issue, bag the appointment with the dealer if you can, and go to a reputable glass shop for auto glass. Just walk in, tell them it came off, and ask them if they would be kind enough to super glue it for you. Most of the time, you'll find them very happy to do so, because they'll expect you'll be back when you need a windshield replaced. Gail

    Hi,

Mine is a late 04, purchased in April of this year. Put the Ac on last week, went up on a highway, and the whole car shook. You will see my note somewhere on the bulletins about this. I never heard it again, and I have yet to "feel" that horrible vibration. I am trying to convince myself that I didn't have the control knob properly in the right spot between 1,2,3,4, & 5 on the control knob, and maybe cause it to roar. I hope I'm right. My noise was very loud, as well as a big vibration. It was enough to make me think something seriously was wrong with the car and then after I shut the a/c off, it went away. Dealer unable to duplicate alot of what we talk about here..I appreciate your saying how you enjoy the CXL and that it took some time to get used to it from a van. I gave up a dodge caravan which I have been in for 20 years (3 of them, all from being new), and never had any issues with them. I miss the comfort and find the rendez is not a comfortable vehicle, for my spine which is not very strong. The caravan, I could easily ride in for 3-4 hours with no pain. I can't go 1 hour on the road, without such pain. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Gail

    Hi Bruce,

It's Gail with the 04 Rondy. I have just 3000 on it and at 1500 I mentioned it and they told me it's "normal" because the breaks weren't "used" and once they get broken in, that would go away...... :O( What I really dislike is the tire situation..they are very hard, and the car bounces terribly like it's out of control. I don't know what to do about that. They tell me the tires are fine, just "aggresive." I don't want the hard knocking ride..it just vibrates everywhere, even on brand new hwys! Any thoughts? The only other issue relative to what you mentioned about the rust in rear wheels, is that my front wheel hubs are totally black with what looks like charcoal. I am always wiping them off with a cloth. Dealer tells me "just normal front wheel brakes" ..never had ABS so I don't know who's kidding who here.

I wonder if the writers for Consumer Reports would be of any benefit to us Rndzvs. owners, given all the complaints listed. Maybe with someone like them behind us, GM will listen and reconsider an extended warranty to owners of these vehicles, etc. Any thoughts?

I doubt it very much. GM is cutting it's work force, GM is cutting employee benefits. GM is in deep financial trouble. By outsourcing the RDV to Mexico it has help it's bottom line short term. Long term, people will realize the the RDV was a poorly designed fragile vehicle. I sold mine and glad I did. :confuse:

While I do think there were issues with 2002 models, the Rendezvous has average reliability with every study I have seen which would lead me to believe that the Rendezvous is not as bad as a few posters may lead you to believe.

Well said, vanman! To my amazement, some people are truly panicked about owning a Rendezvous ("The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"). They need to realize that ALL makes and models of vehicles have their share of problems, quirks, design flaws, etc. 45,000 miles on my 2002 Rendezvous CXL and still going strong :) I am still on original wheel bearings, tires, BCM, no wet carpeting, no starting problems, no electrical malfunctions, etc.

As I have pointed out before, Consumer Reports notes that each and every model year of the Rendezvous has improved in regards to repairs and reliability. The 2004 Rendezvous was the first Consumer Reports "recommended" model year for this vehicle. The 2004 was an above-average overall predicted reliability rating. The 2002 had a below-average overall predicted reliability rating.

As to the reliability of the RDV.
I have never seen an RDV sitting along the side of the road with car trouble. I have seen Hondas, Toys, Fords, Chev. I noticed on spring break on I75 through Kentucky that there were 5 or 6 Hondas along the interstate. Seemed to be a higher ratio than the population ratio.
