    Hi Mark,

Interesting post. Possibly you or others could offer advice. I was just about to buy a 2002 RDV CXL with 58k on it. Work history includes bearing and hub assembly at 18k, computer control module body at 28k, condenser at 28k, other bearing and hub assembly at 38k, cylinder head gasket at 55k, left rear coil spring and power steering gear assembly at 56k.
Am I just asking for more trouble or do you think the worst is over since many things have already been replaced.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    RR,

The good news is that this vehicle is almost new! The only thing that might expectedly go wrong is the RDM (read drive module). Mine is making some noise at 72K miles and I will not fix it till it is really bad.

The 03's did ot have the BCM issues, but did have the rest. If your seller is motivate, you could snag this for a good deal. OTOH, an 03 or newer with FWD might be the the best bet.

In my case, I just might buy a new 07 FWD this July or August. They should be going at serious fire sale prices. But given the super low resale I may just keep mine till well past 100K. BTW, I have an 05 AWD Vibe with extra wheels and snow tires. The snows make a HUGE difference. Granted, I live near Buffalo, NY. But my next vehicle will be FWD with snow tires. It is not worth the loss of fuel economy or the hassle of extra maint/repair.

    Thanks Mark,

Based on all of the work that has been done, do you think $11k with 2 yr GE warranty is a snag? It's being offered by a dealer.

My 2005 buick will die instantly. I will drive down the freeway and my car will die. For example I will be driving 50+ mph, and the car dies, kind of similar to slamming on my brakes. Things in my car will go flying it stops so abruptly. It gives no warning signs, just stops, and the engine turns off. It dies so instantly and stops right in its tracks so I am unable to steer it off the road, which is pretty dangerous. GM can not figure out what is causing this problem, and it has happened 3 times in 2 months. I know longer call it a Buick Rendezvous, I know call it the buick death trap. Please help if you know what could be causing this. :lemon: :lemon:

I had a 2002 RDV. I had that problem along with many others. The Dealer replaced the BCM three times in the five years I had the RDV. I believe Once for the reason you stated and once because for no reason the horn would blow and the lights would flash and the wipers would go full blast. ( Real pain at 3:00 AM in a attached garage ). The last time was for a variety of little things. Like the doors locking while the vehicle was in neutral and the engine was running ( happened twice going through the car wash ) instrument panel would go blank while driving and other things I have been trying to forget. Absolutely the worst vehicle I have ever owned. Perhaps the last American vehicle I will purchase

has your transmission been checked? sounds like a mechanical failure I know we had a car that somehting happened to the tranny and when you started it it would clunk and die. mental picture of a wheel spinning and something gets thrown in the spokes and it stops instantly think it was torqu converter gadget of some sort. if it does dies can you shift it to neutral and start it again? it sounds like the transmission. if it was electrical it would just die not stop/ Good luck have the pcm checked out

I have already bought the 2002 cx version, but now I want to upgrade the cxl version for more seats, features etc..., does anyone know if I can do this and if so how?
  • intrepidcubintrepidcub Member Posts: 60
anyuhting can be done if you have the expertise, money and a friend at the dealer with a computer :) what features of the CXL do you want? i have the CX plus and i think the only thing im missing is moonroof, auto climate zone, and heated seats. problem with the vous is you have to program the BCM to recognize the options which i think can be done. so what options do ya want and i can check my repair DVD and my other sources to see if it can be done easily :)

I mainly want the third row of seats and the sunroof. I also wanted to know here I can get the other type of grilles. and what other types of upgrades are available?
  • intrepidcubintrepidcub Member Posts: 60
hmm the third row may be possible i know there was one on ebay for 120 bucks or so. the problem comes with the seat belts youll ahve to run the shoulder belts and get the plastic rear quarter with the seat belt holes etc. not sure whats under the carpet but it uses studs which the holes and reinforcemnts may be there and you may need to drill holes and insert studs you wont know till you pull the carpet up and look. the grilles there was only one grille available earlier ones were gray later ones black and the ultra had bodycolored, I have an xclusive chrome one i got off ebay its aftermarket and its the full grille thats been chromed but here is also a E&G classic grill overlay doesnt look nearly as good in my opinion and its more expensive than the xclusive one. the moonroof you can add in aftermarket . then there is the wood dash which makes a drastic iumprovemnt. the black faced guages which require some dissecting so not for the faint of heart. you gotta switch the circuit board or the milages is innacurate. there are a few rendezvous sites and also check out the Aztek sites the aztek is the lil cousin and shares alot of parts those guys are do some awesome stuff as well. i think im one of the rendezvous nuts and breathe these cars so hit me up an email and i can send ya some more info.

    Bluedevils,
Sorry it took me so long to answer you. Have not checked in for about 4 mos.
Re. the mpg: no I don't keep close track of but will check it now and then. Last time I checked in-town mileage it was a little over 16. On a trip from central Ohio through Pennsylvania I think it was 23 mpg with mostly secondary roads and lots of hills. It's my wife's vehicle and is used mostly in town. It is an '04 Ultra, AWD, with only 14,000 miles on it. WIfe loves it and have had no problems.

Does anyone know where the PCM is located under the hood (on the 2006 Rendezvous). Also, who is the wiring manufacturer for GM for the engine harness?
  • chip9chip9 Member Posts: 1
We are having the same problem in our 2002, everthing dies. The car will die for about 5 sec or so and then start back up, all the dash light blink, all the bell go off and the car start back up. This all happens at 65 MPR Took it to the dealership they said everthing check out fine and could not find any problem.
    Any help would be great.

My '04 Rendezvous will be coming off lease soon. I've been lucky enough to have seen zero defects/problems in 36K miles. GMAC wants too much to buy the car, so I'll be turning it in. No complaints - that huge residual meant <$300/mo payments. I'd like to get a new one, but I'm told the RDV has been replaced by Buick with the new Enclave, which is quite a car. Compared to the RDV, it's 14 inches longer, 3 inches wider, 1,000 pounds heavier, with 100HP more, and its rated at about the same MPG. Of course, gas is a lot more expensive than it was in '04.Will the new, porkier model be able to get 30MPG on the road, like my RDV has? Imagine if the money to develop this MDX fighter had been spent on refining the Rendezvous? That efficient new drivetrain might have gotten another 5 or 10 MPG in the smaller, lighter car. Still with 7 adult seats, awesome cargo capacity, and an easy-to-park size. I'll miss my Rondy.

    .

I love my wife's RVD as well. We have a used '03 RDV (bought a few months ago) and still love it today. Best little "run about and short trips for 3 kids" vehicle we ever owned. Love the way it rides across bumps, love the way it steers and love the way it "feels" in the tight corners. You are right, it isn't the best SUV/Cross Over vehicle for MPHs. But based on its many positives, one has to take a negative hit somewhere. One can't have 100% in every critical rating. If our '03 RDV got totalled tomorrow, we're also replace our RDV with the same type of SUV/Cross Over vehicle. Yes, a used model as well. And, like our current '03 RDV vehicle, it would only be in FWD version. For a replacement, Saturn Vue, Chev Equinox, KIA Sportage and Santa Fe "shape models" come to mind. Even though we love our current '03 RDV, not too sure if I'd buy another GMC again. For their physical size, GMC models continue to be "gas hogs". And, they don't have high quality / high reliability like its competition. Or, high quality like their models built 10 years ago. No - this post is not ment to poke at GMC. I'm a GMC guy since age 9 (since my field bombing days with my dad's old chev). Just "recent 5-10 years of GMC hands on experience" and too much auto repair bill memories coming to the surface... Time to see what the other SUV/Cross Over designs have to offer as well... Good luck with your future replace RDV "shape like" replacement.

BTW: If I add up all auto repair bills for my 2 x GMC models and factory in saved MPGs, I could have easily bought import vehicles - at a much higher initial purchase price. I'm sure others are starting to "bean count" and connect the dots with their own vehicle history as well.

im not to impressed by the enclave. they made such a big deal with its debut and how it would bring back buick but then they release the outlook and acadia months before the enclave so now its clearly a cookie cutter built from a GMC and saturn. Now the Buick SUV looks like everyother SUV on the market. I love my Rendezvous this is my first GM car and i know my last I dont like the invasive Onstar, I dont think GM is to user friendly as far as accessories. even audio upgrades arent possible without a 120 dollar interface. My prior vehicle was a 02 dodge intrepid and i was able to add auto headlights, Navigation, indiglo guages, auto climate control etc most of which was plug and play, not programming of BCMS needed I miss that car. well enough of my rant just feel the rendezvous coulda been something great but buick never redeisgined them or even made any improvemnts in 5 year

The Saturn Vue may interest you. You have a choice of 4 and 6 cylinder powertrains and it is about the same size as the RDV. Good luck with finding a vehicle that suits your needs.

    See : http://www.forbes.com/2007/07/26/car...?partner=msnbc

After reading the above article, I wonder if anyone else has successfully done anything to upgrade the supsension on this car to make it more rollover proof.

I would like to consider changing to sport shocks, upgrading sway bars and bushings if possible, as well as perhaps maybe wider tires and stiffer/lower springs.

The problem is, after searching the internet high and low, I don't think anyone makes any suspension upgrades for our cars. I did a search and the best I can find is KYB GR-2 (factory stiffness) struts for the front and KYB Gas-adjust (sport/firm shock) for the rear. I was hoping to find a matching set of sport shocks, but even unable to do that. I am also unable to find any upgrades for sway bars, bushings or springs.

This is very frustrating because after having worked on a project sports car, I found that sporty options such as shocks/struts and swaybars were plentiful for that car. Even for a "volvo" therre is a company called IPD that sells performance suspension components such as beefier sway bars, springs and struts/shocks...

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas where I might be able to find these items?? It seems they are hard, if not impossible to find.
  • verdi942verdi942 Member Posts: 304
Don't forget, they may not be making such aftermarket goodies for the RDV because the vehicle's been discontinued. Ditto the mechanically similar Pontiac Aztek, which you might also check, since that car was meant to appeal to people used to such upgrades. Good luck! PS - I've loved my '04 RDV for its versatility and efficiency. As we know, GM chose not to upgrade and refine its admittedly dated design. Instead, it's been replaced with the longer, wider, heavier THIRSTIER Enclave which does have stabilitrak standard. I'm looking at a short-wheelbase Dodge Caravan as a possible replacement. It's probably not on any list of dangerous vehicles.
  • hawaiianguyhawaiianguy Member Posts: 86
I don't believe personally that just because the car has been discontinued this means that no aftermarket items will be made. Case in point I own a 1984 porssce carrera which has long been discontinued over 20 years ago, and there are many companies that sell a TON of stuff for those cars, because there are a lot of enthiasts who are into these older cars and fixing and upgrading them. IF there was a demand, the products would be available, despite discontiuation of the car. I think the real problem might be that the types of people who would buy a rendezvous are not looking to upgrade the performance so there may be a total lack of demand in this area. However, I was hoping as the car ages there will be more demand due to more parts wearing out and more parts being needed to be replaced. Another case in point, I am unable to find a haynes manual on my car yet. It is a 2005. I am hoping in a few years they will come out with one when the car gets older, as I am hoping they may start to produce more options as far as replacement shocks/struts as the existing used rendezvous population ages and needs more replacement parts, hopefully increasing demand...
  • verdi942verdi942 Member Posts: 304
Way to, HG. The RDV sure could use some suspension improvements. I predict that the RDV will become a "UCC" [used car classic] as people recognize its worth.
  • verdi942verdi942 Member Posts: 304
In my search for an American replacement vehicle for my RDV, I settled on the '07 short wheelbase Chrysler/Dodge van. Same outside measurements, 7 seats and decent gas mileage. Not a Buick, but, OK. Problem - I need to lease. Why a problem? Chrysler's asking too much for the leases on these $350/mo. Guess who's giving a lot more for less $$$? Yep, Honda [I can lease an Odyssey for less than the small MOPAR van]; Toyota [ditto a RAV-4]; and, Honda, again [CRV]. I can give "Buy American" about 1 month to match those offers. I hope they do.
  • hawaiianguyhawaiianguy Member Posts: 86
I sure hope you're right. We all could use a lot more aftermarket options such as supsension upgrades and the like..
  • spike99spike99 Member Posts: 239
    Interesting post....

For the last 30 minutes, I've read the many views on the board. re: http://www.edmunds.com/buick/rendezvous/2007/consumerreview.html

Nobody mentions "high roll over" risk. Wonder how the author of this post can support their details. If it was that bad, MTO/DOT would be pulling the RDV off the road. Or, insurance companies would triple their rates (on the RDV).

Wonder how many folks beliw the rating in this article???

Hello, I have a 2002 Buick Rendezvous CX V6 with 95,000 miles. Recently my hot coolant temp light has been going on with the temp needle staying by the red zone - Hot. Sometimes it stays on the Hot side and I have to pull over to cool the engine. While it's on the hot side, I have no heat - it just blows cold air! Other times, it will go 3/4 of the way to HOT then drop back down to cool and then I get my heat back. There's no rhyme or reason for the fluctuation. Sometimes the car runs fine, but more often it's fluctuation between hot and cold temps. I check the coolant and it's full and not leaking. Any ideas?

    Thank you, Kathy :confuse:
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
Did you check both the overflow bottle and radiater for fluid level, and have you been adding coolant? If the coolant level is truely good, then most likely it is bad thermostat (sticking from the sounds of it). Part should not be exspensive but from what I hear it takes a good deal of effort to change it.
  • ragerrlragerrl Member Posts: 6
    Kathy,

Mine does the exact same thing. As previously suggested, I did change my thermostat (not fun at all) and this was not the problem. I also changed the oil to look for coolant and flushed the cooling system. Everything looked normal. Like you said it will work fine and then it will be HOT until you pull over, then fine again. I figured out that I was getting air in the cooling system and it would cause a vapor lock at the thermostat. I have been bleeding the system over and over so now I know that I have a different problem. The next time it gets hot pull over and open your hood. If you can hear coolant boiling in your radiator, try to bleed the system with the brass bleeder by the thermostat. If you get a lot of steam/air you have the same problem I do. I am starting to think it is the head gasket or manifold gasket. If anyone has any other thoughts they would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Randy
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
Thats why I asked about checking radiater and adding coolant. If it gets low enough it will get air trapped in system and require bleeding. Head gacket and/or manifold gasket will most likely result in coolant loss to some degree. Radiater cap that does not have good seal could also cause some troubles.
  • ragerrlragerrl Member Posts: 6
My radiator coolant has been good. I was also thinking if it was a gasket, there would possibly be some steam/fog coming from the exhaust, but it has been the same. I work at a Technical College and they can get it into there shop to do some tests, but at the moment they are backed up. My thought is maybe there is a small leak in the gasket not enough coolant is being pushed into the motor on the down stroke to be noticed or maybe it is burning off right away, but it is pushing air into the system on the up stroke. As I said, I have been bleeding for days and days. Everyother trip it gets hot, I pull over...bleed and it is fine for awhile. ideas??? Thanks for the reply.
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
Hhmm couple thngs I can maybe think of. What year is your vous? I believe (if I remember correctly) that the LIM gasket problem was corrected sometime on 03' and if you had that problem it may likely show up as dirty residue in the gasket area (external leak) and from my experiance until it gets real bad coolant tends to evaporate so its not an obvious leak when you look. Also I think there is 2 bleed screws in the system (don't know where the other one is). Are you leaving heater on when you bleed it to ensure collant (or air) is flowing through the system?
  • ragerrlragerrl Member Posts: 6
It is an '02 with 115,xxx miles. Yes there are two bleed screws. The other one is located on the left side of the motor. When I bleed, I have been shutting the car off and bleeding at both spots. I know that when I flushed the system, I didn't get near the amount of coolant in that I took out, so I knew that there had to be air in the system but that has been at least two weeks now. After I bleed out the air, I let the vehicle cool down and then have been putting some coolant back into the reservoir. I have been hoping that it is just a matter of getting all the air out...but it has been happening more frequently.

I'm so sorry that you had this experience. I've been dealing with this dealership for 5 plus years and have sent many friends. We have all had fantastic experience. Even when there was a concern the General Manager addressed it immediately with professionalism and action. I hope you give them another chance. They will do everything to make you happy.

I feel like I ought to comment on my surprise as to how comfortable, luxuriuos and surprisingly well made the Rendezvous is. I have never been a fan. In fact, I dismissed this Buick as a Minivan with doors ever since it appeared. A friend however, dropped an 07 on me to sell for him as his wife died - and in driving it in the meantime, I'm amazed at how refined the handling, suspension and ride are, as well as the quality of the leather in the seats. True to the Buick faith, the plood (plastic wood) is plentiful, but it reminds me of my 82 Park Avenue, which is not bad. The wood steering wheel really helps, I think, with the "feel" of quality. I'm a Lexus owner, and frankly, there is a hint of Lexus in this car.

So, maybe not a convert - but, no longer a critic, at least. I hear they don't make this car anymore - not necessarily a bad thing, but for those around, they aren't bad. YMMV.

Does anyone know if an after market roof rack kit is made for a RDV that doesn't have a factory installed rack? I just purchased an "03 to replace a "95 Villager. I would like to be able to use my Thule setup on the RDV. Is it possible to get a factory roof rack installed?

I have a 2004 rdv FWD with about 45K on it. 75-85% of the time when you turn the car off it makes a whistling or whining noise that last for about 3-6 seconds and it is so loud that people will look at you from across the parking lot. It does seem to happen more when its warm out and your using the A\C or vents but it does happen in the winter also. No dealer around here has heard of the problem and would like to see if anyone knows about this before I take it to them and they tell me after 3 days without a car that nothing is wrong. The only good thing is that it does not seem to affect the car in any way. CAN ANYONE HELP!!!!!!

    Thx in advance

I have an '03 RDV with EXACTLY the same problem. I have been to the dealer 6 times with this and each time they say they don't hear the noise...then as soon as I drive away and park - there it is. It DID make the noise once when I had a windshield replaced and the windshield guy said it sounded like a vacuum problem to him. I feel like I need more information before I go back to the dealer, as the dealer's service guy looks at me like he's thinking "yeah, right, lady, sure there's a noise under the hood.....". I'm just thankful now I know I'm not the only one with this weird problem!! (ps also have about 45K on it). I've been living with this problem for a couple of years now because, as rdvdave said, it doesn't seem to affect the car's performance in any way, but it can be embarassing. HELP!

Last year my 2002 rendezvous began to make a noise when the car made a "sharp" turn. The dealership finally decided it was the water pump and replaced it. The noise continued and it was decided that the water pump was defected and it was replaced. Well, the noise continued and I was told it was normal- some pumps made noise. Now, the noise is louder and is happening on every turn. I can only describe it as a rubbing sound- the mechanics can definitely can hear it as can anyone else. The car is going back on Friday. Other than this, there have been no problems. Has anyone else experience this or heard of this problem? Thanks

I just stumbled upon this forum and will continue to search it for some answers but thought I would try a new post, looks like there isn't much activity on this forum anymore but maybe someone can help. We bought a 2006 Rendezvous CXL AWD a couple months ago. We love the vehicle overall but have had a couple problems fixed under warranty. Currenty we are trying to get the dealer to figure out what is causing a noise when turning. They already replaced the power steering pump but that did not fix it.

The problem is at slow speed turning, such as turning in parking lots, there is a very noticeable moaning noise, happens turning right or left, the harder you turn the louder it is. At first the dealer tried to say they all do that and it has to do with the AWD system and how the wheels turn at different speeds when cornering. While I have certainly heard AWD, 4 X 4, trac control vehicles make some noise I have never heard anything this loud or constant. After going for a ride with me today the mechanic said he agreed that it should not make such a loud and noticeable noise and so I have another appointment schedule for later this week but I dont expect any results unless I find some info on my own to feed to them. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Also any other known common problems I should be on the look out for while its still under warranty. Thanks alot hopefully theres still a few people on here that can help.

My '03 RDV makes a noise when turning either direction on a slow speed turn when braking. It sounds & feels like the anti-lock brake engaging. When it happens the anti-lock brake warning light comes on and all wheel drive disable light comes on. It is not leaking brake fluid that I can see and the brake are working. Any ideas as to the cause of this problem?
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
In line with what tidester asked, could it be described as grinding or humming sound that may change in tone or intensity with speed change? If so I would be guessing front wheel bearing.
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
A moan /groan at slow speeds is usually an issue with the VERSATRAK system in the AWD version. The best first step would be to do a verstrak fluid change (following proper procedure) . I saw in the Pontiac Montana forum one member had to to this twice to get the noise to go away, but usually once is enough.
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
Yours may be tougher to figure out. The ABS AWD lights illuminating indicate a problem either with a wheel sensor or perhaps more common as vehicle gets older corrosion at connector to sensor or broken wire. Add in the noise and it may be more complicated. Are your sure it can only be heard when braking and not at other times?
  • h2oaquadogh2oaquadog Member Posts: 11
It doesn't really sound like a wheel bearing, but I do want to let you know that EVERYTIME my AWD disable and Antilock Brake light came on, it was because I either had a bad wheel bearing, or the sensor on the bearing was bad. I changed my bearings 10 times in 15,000 miles and this was the warning that they were bad everytime.
  • firedog79firedog79 Member Posts: 2
I was kinding thinking it was a problem with the AWD system. I dont really understand exactly how Versatrak works but it makes sense that the problem would habe to do with it trying to sinc the wheel rotation or what ever it does. I'll see what the dealer says after this next appointment but I'm guessing Im in for a long process to get it fixed. My local dealer admitted that they have had very little experience with Rendezvous.
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
One other possibility (besides just changing fluid) is leak in the system causing fluid to be low. I would have them check the fluid level first (and obviously look for signs of leakage). There is also a procedure that has to be folllowed when changing fluid (beyond dump and refill), are you dealing with GM dealer?
  • master4master4 Member Posts: 6
I just had my RDV AWD serviced for the noise when turning. They changed the rear dif fluid and drove it around in circles for a while, then changed the fluid again. It has seemed to work and there is a TSB for it at the dealer's. Only bad thing, cost $450.00...50K on my Ultra RDV however and I still think its the perfect car for me.
  • valronvalron Member Posts: 1
Can anyone help? 2003 Rendezvous will not start when you turn the key. Mechanic replaced the computer and ignition but neither solved the problem. He did however tell me if you put a paperclip in fuse #58 and turn the ignition in the on position it starts right up. Sure enough it does but..... I hardly call that fixed! We hooked it up to another computer and it reads that it is in 3rd gear no matter what gear it is in.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks
